Izložba pobjednika i finalista festivala Rovinj Photodays 2015

The exhibition of the winners and finalists of the festival Rovinj Photodays 2015

ROVINJ PHOTODAYS guarantees an international promotion of photographers and their work which will be selected through a two-tier selection system allowing only the best work to get through. A competition with clear cut rules based on photographic practices and equal opportunities gives enough freedom to selectors, first to the national and then the head selector, to choose the best work in the competition.

U ime cjelokupnog savjeta festivala koristim priliku još jednom čestitati svim finalistima i pobjednicima natječaja. Želim vam puno uspjeha u vašem stvaralačkom radu... Denis Redić, direktor RovinjPhotodays

Over 8,500 photographs were sent in for this year’s competition which was open until February 1st. 450 photographers applied from 30 countries and, as expected, the majority were from Croatia and the neighbouring countries. Judging was done in two rounds: National selectors and the festival advisers preselected all work that was sent in and then forwarded it to the head selector, David Bate, who chose five finalists for each category. It is worth mentioning that amongst them there are 10 photographers from Italy, 5 from Serbia, 4 from Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Slovenia, 2 from Macedonia and one each from France, Argentina and USA. On behalf of the festival advisory committee I take this opportunity to congratulate all our competition finalists and winners. I wish you success in your creative work......

Osvrt glavnog selektora Davida Batea

David Bate’s review

What a fascinating process it has been! Not only to look at and enjoy seeing so many works in the different categories, but also to have to make choices between so many interesting works and ideas. I have been very interested to see how what are often quite traditional concepts and themes have been interpreted in new ways. Not all are fully successful for sure, but it is exciting to see that photography is alive and kicking in so many different ways.

It is a bit of a cliché of judges to say that the competition was close because the submissions were so strong. Well, its true! Sometimes it was very hard to make choices and decisions where there was a lot of equally strong work, but with different themes and approaches. While sometimes it was easier to draw up a shortlist, getting down to a final order for the top five was often very tough. I have made more specific comments here on each section.

ARCHITECTURE - The work ranges widely in this section, from what could be called contextual architecture, orientated towards showing the location of buildings and the effects of time or events on them and their social space, through to a celebration of the shapes and lines of architectural form. The best works here evoke a strong affect or feeling about the type of space that humans live in, more than just visually showing what somewhere looks like through a photograph. DOCUMENTARY - Documentary was a strong category, with good work on a variety of topics and themes, from journalistic essays on social events to documenting different problems and issues. Also clear in this category is a variety of photo-

graphic styles and ways of treating these topics, whether social, political, cultural or economic. It is great to see so many people using photography with enthusiasm and passion to show the critical issues that are important to today. FASHION - Some widely different interpretations of what fashion is here, from presenting an ideal figure to a space for dreams and fantasy. Fashion is a difficult field to work in, working with models, locations, cosmetics and couture means a lot of directorial work. The best work suggests a story about something. Fashion by its very nature is transient and changing, which at its best can speak to the passions of youth, the charms of age, and different values across culture. LANDSCAPE - Landscape photography is a rich field (excuse the pun) in which to work and thus also makes it quite hard to stand out in. The best photographs here (whether in series or singular images) are, for me at least, those that deal with the specific feeling generated by a particular location, whether it is addressing environmental issues, the character of the territory and land or the usage to which it is put. (This used to be called ‘the genius of the place’ in landscape painting.) NUDE / BODY - Some nice work here, from variants of classics and others moving beyond to more contemporary themes and interpretations of the nude and distorting body-images. There were some series and sequences that had one or two strong images but I felt these would have been better if the photographer had edited the series to make them more coherent, and would have made the set much stronger. I like the humour and seriousness in several of these selections.

izabrati sve.

PORTRAITS - There are many lovely individual portraits of people in the entries here, and it would have been easy to select them all. However I was also struck by and very much liked the way some of the entries were questioning the idea of what a portrait is: that is, the idea that we can know someone and their real character by simply staring at their face. Finding different ways to ask or suggest what an identity is through portraiture is a modern challenge and some of the works here offer fascinating insight into how such challenges may be tackled. ARTISTIC CONCEPT - There were some very strong entries here, probably so many they could be a show on their own. Some of the works had a high degree of engagement in contemporary culture, others a strong familiarity within international art photography. I looked for work with a convincing and interesting concept, with something to say, and not just a conceptual technique. There was also some very promising work here too, which even if they did not win or even make the top five, I sincerely hope the authors will continue to work on. The selection was particularly difficult in this section, not only because of the high standard, but because there was so much of interest across the field of entries. Innovative ideas were abundant here. I would like to thank all those who submitted for making this process such a difficult task, because you all made this the event it is.

OPIS KONCEPTA / Izjava:

CONCEPT / Statement:

This project to me, as a photographer growing up in Italy, is an opportunity to escape from reality that we can see / observe in the “Collaboration with the so-called Real World”. This concept comes from a “collaboration” between the photographer and what is called the “Real World”; the intention was to work around the Lyric Documentary shown by Walker Evans during a lecture at Yale University in 1964.

Riječ „liričan“ sugerira subjektivne i osobne osjećaje, a „dokumentaran“ sugerira objektivno bilježenje činjenica - a isto tako pokazuje „nježnu okrutnost“ kojom pisac Lincoln Kirsten opisuje radove američkog fotografa Walker Evansa 1930.godina.

The word “lyric” suggests subjective and personal emotions, and “documentary” suggests the objective recording of facts. And also, it is clearly showing the “tender cruelty” through which the writer Lincoln Kirstein described the work of American photographer Walker Evans in the 1930s. The “tender cruelty” to me represents an oscillation between engagement and estrangement.

Pejzaž, osobni pejzaž i lirska napetost su u ovoj priči artikulirani kroz pokret unutar samog pejzaža, posebno privlačnog i zavodljivog zbog korelacije/povezanosti sa prošlošću, sadašnjošću i budućnošću iz kojih proizlazi.

Landscape, personal landscape and lyric tension are articulated in this storytelling though the movement inside this landscape, particularly attractive and seductive because of the correlation with the past, the present and the future that it emanates.

OPIS KONCEPTA / Izjava:

CONCEPT / Statement:

More often than not, people believe that they are hidden from the views of others when in certain public and private areas. They would probably display different behavior if they were aware of the vigilant observers who do see them.

In the series of photographs Exposed, my gaze focused on people in their cars, which they consider their private space, disregarding the fact that they are only a car window away from the public space. I was hidden while taking the photographs, so that my presence wouldn’t affect the behavior of the people observed.

Eclectic, poetic, instinctive. My photographic approach is greedy and free. Probably because it could wake up after years of frustration. It is inspired by contemplation and observations picked by chance here and there and by the echo of my own life experiences.

Through La Photocopieuse (The Photocopier), I am expressing my taste for narrative fictions stemming from the reality, where the signs of life become evocative while leaving room for the out of frame. This series is also a reflection of my former professional experiences in open spaces of corporate companies.

No iza te uniformiranosti stoje pojedinci.

What is more ordinary and characteristic of the office life than a photocopier? Everyone uses it mechanically from pressing the start button to checking the result, always repeating the same gestures. Yet behind the uniformity, stand individuals. It’s a solitary task. One goes to the photocopier, engulfed in one’s thoughts or focused on what needs doing. Sometimes a little break is granted or a colleague is met on the way.

To photocopy, to print, it is a story of duplication. There lies the link between these real-life yet faceless figures. Like an open window on imaginary narratives.

Gradovi koji me zanimaju: L’Aquila i zaleđe u području Abruzza; dolina Vajont (Friuli-Venezia Giulia i Veneto) s gradićima Erto, Longarone i New Vajont; San Felice sul Panaro i Mirandola (Emilia Romagna).

New Towns is a photo series about rebuilt post-disaster areas. The project is still in progress, and until now it has been all about Italian territory. Cities I am interested in are: L’Aquila and its hinterland in Abruzzo; Vajont Valley (FriuliVenezia Giulia and Veneto) with the cities of Erto, Longarone and New Vajont; San Felice sul Panaro and Mirandola (Emilia Romagna).

Ja sam im pokušao dati neku cjelovitost, bez dramatiziranja.’

New cities and the future of communities have been designed to ward off disasters. Quite often the ruins of old cities waited for years for final restoration. Nowadays new towns and the future of their communities are being designed starting from caesura made by disasters and based on contours of the old cities destroyed. The people in these pictures speak without words of the past preceding the tragedy and they dream of future in these new landscapes. “These places will remain divided between past and present for a long time. I tried to restore fullness of these places, beyond the drama.”

Fotografije i video radovi u ovoj seriji predstavljaju work in progress koji sam započeo 2008. godine. Razmatram brojne metaforične poveznice s postojećim političkim zbivanjima u mojoj domovini Rusiji i kompliciranu anksioznu vezu s njenom prošlosti.

The work represented in this portfolio is an ongoing body of photographs and videos that I began in 2008. The images are documents of miniature sets constructed out of paper and then photographed. The project is a reflection on the topic of exile, home, and developing a relationship with one’s past and belonging. I am contemplating a number of metaphorical connections to concurrent political events in my native country of Russia and a complicated and anxious relationship with its own past.

The spaces in my work are in a transient state. They are not specific to their own location; they are not geographically defined. Something is always about to happen; something is always about to change. They are always incomplete and uncanny and at the same time, they vigorously defend their existence asserting their position in my memory. I am seduced into believing that they are there. I feel ashamed and constantly surveyed, afraid of being accused of not crediting them their historical validity. In the early part of the 20th century politicians, activists and artists in Communist Russia were involved in an act of building a Soviet myth, creating a new space-time continuum, while violently eradicating the past by erasing facts from the history texts, documents, photographs, and from the consciousness of people. In the process, a new history was fabricated, thus creating a new order, a new collective memory, and turning and entire country and its many cultures into exiles in their own land. Almost a hundred years after the revolution Russia seemed to be slowly creeping back into its shadowy past with old ghosts unwilling to leave the walls of the Kremlin.
