RINGS UP A NEW HIT Marc Lottering
BY VENECIA VALENTINE
MOVE OVER, AUNTY MERLE – COLLEEN THE CASHIER IS STEPPING UP! MARC LOTTERING’S LATEST MUSICAL COMEDY BRINGS LOVE, LAUGHTER, AND A SUPERMARKET FULL OF SECRETS TO THE BAXTER STAGE.
I“f you don’t give your heart away, it will never be broken.” That’s the guiding motto of Colleen the Cashier – until Randall the Shelf-Packer walks into her life and changes everything. But in the fast-paced world of tills, cigarette counters, supervisors, and endless customer queues, love is never simple.
Will Colleen regret breaking her own rule, or will romance triumph in aisle three?
Audiences will have to queue to find out. Colleen the Musical is the latest work by comedy legend Marc Lottering, marking his fourth musical comedy after the massive success of the Aunty Merle trilogy.
Produced by Anwar McKay and directed by Lara Foot, the show features an award-winning creative team, including Charl-Johan Lingenfelder (musical direction), Patrick Curtis (set design), and Grant Van Ster (choreography).
On stage, expect a powerhouse cast featuring Marc Lottering, Jill Levenberg, Kate Normington, David Chevers, Carlo Daniels, Sizwesandile Mnisi, and Anzio September. A love story, a comedy, and a musical with a proudly South African heartbeat – Colleen the Musical promises to make audiences laugh, sing, and maybe even shed a tear in between.
I caught up with the award-winning comedian and philanthropist Marc Lottering, ahead of his upcoming production at the Baxter Theatre from 29 November 2025 to 7 February 2026.
MARC, YOUR FANS KNOW AND LOVE AUNTY MERLE. NOW YOU’RE INTRODUCING US TO COLLEEN THE CASHIER. WHAT INSPIRED THIS NEW CHARACTER AND HER STORY?
Colleen the Cashier has been one of my popular
characters from the very start of my career. You might say she’s as well-loved as Aunty Merle. So, just like we did for Merle, we felt it was time to bring Colleen’s world to life in her very own musical comedy.
THE SHOW’S MOTTO IS “IF YOU DON’T GIVE YOUR HEART AWAY, IT WILL NEVER BE BROKEN”. DO YOU THINK COLLEEN’S JOURNEY REFLECTS SOMETHING PERSONAL FROM YOUR OWN EXPERIENCES WITH LOVE AND VULNERABILITY?
Unlike Colleen (and sometimes regrettably so), I’ve always thrown myself in all fours when it comes to love. So, I’m a bit different from Colleen.
HOW DID YOU DECIDE TO SET A LOVE STORY IN THE FAST-PACED WORLD OF CASHIERS, CUSTOMERS, AND SUPERVISORS? WHAT DREW YOU TO THAT SETTING?
For many years, Colleen’s fans have wondered what the other characters in her world look like. In this musical, fans will finally meet Bronwynn, Colleen’s best friend and fellow cashier, who works at the till beside her. Then there’s Colleen’s rival, Tracey Boonzaaier, the supervisor. Shelfpacker Randall is involved, along with deli-boy Craig, who has a fondness for polony. Store manager Mr Tommy has spicy secrets, whilst Andile, the restaurant manager from next door, is besotted with Bronwynn.
COLLEEN THE MUSICAL IS YOUR FOURTH COMEDIC PRODUCTION, FOLLOWING THE AUNTY MERLE TRILOGY. HOW DOES COLLEEN’S STORY DIFFER IN TONE, STYLE, OR MESSAGE FROM AUNTY MERLE’S WORLD?
I imagine the tone and style will be similar to our previous musicals, as it’s hard to escape from oneself when it comes to creativity. The
challenge, of course, is that it must be even better than what has come before, since we have set the bar relatively high and our fans expect nothing less. We now have a new musical director for this production: Charl-Johan Lingenfelder. So musically, I expect we will be taken to a completely different place. Very exciting.
YOU’VE ASSEMBLED A REMARKABLE TEAM FROM LARA FOOT DIRECTING TO CHARL-JOHAN’S MUSICAL DIRECTION. WHAT WAS IT LIKE WORKING WITH THIS CREATIVE POWERHOUSE?
I enjoy working with people who challenge me and keep me on my toes. It’s simple: I don’t want to embarrass myself, so they push me to improve my writing. And that’s ultimately a wonderful thing.
YOU PERFORM IN THE SHOW ALONGSIDE JILL LEVENBERG AND KATE NORMINGTON. HOW DID YOU APPROACH THE CASTING PROCESS, AND WHAT DO THESE ACTORS BRING TO COLLEEN’S WORLD?
I’ve been trying to get Jill on board for a while, but her work calendar has never allowed her
to perform during the festive season. This year, we are delighted to have finally received a YES from her. She will play the role of Bronwynn. Kate consistently makes me laugh until I pee, and she will portray Tracey Boonzaaier, the Supervisor. Carlo Daniels plays Randall, the shelf packer who is also the shop steward. Anzio September is Craig, the charming deli-boy. The very suave Andile manages the restaurant next door to the supermarket, a role played by Sizwesandile Mnisi. The Store Manager, who has several secrets, is portrayed by David Chevers.
This entire cast is exceptional. Present company excluded, of course.
COMEDY AND MUSIC ARE BOTH KEY ELEMENTS OF YOUR STORYTELLING. WHEN CREATING A MUSICAL COMEDY, WHICH DO YOU DEVELOP FIRST: THE LAUGHS OR THE SONGS?
Dialogue first, that’s how it works for me. I prefer to see the story in words before facing the music, so to speak.
YOUR SHOWS OFTEN CONNECT DEEPLY WITH SOUTH AFRICAN AUDIENCES WHILE REMAINING UNIVERSALLY RELATABLE. HOW DO YOU BALANCE LOCAL HUMOUR WITH THEMES THAT EVERYONE CAN RELATE TO?
My viewpoint has always been that, fundamentally, as humans, we are similar beings when it comes to pain and joy. Those are two emotions that often influence our actions, regardless of where we are on the planet. These emotions are the driving force behind my characters.
THE SHOW EXPLORES THEMES OF LOVE, WORKPLACE DYNAMICS, AND COMMUNITY. WHAT MESSAGE DO YOU HOPE AUDIENCES TAKE AWAY AFTER QUEUING WITH COLLEEN AT THE TILL? Be Kind.
REFLECTING ON AUNTY MERLE AND NOW COLLEEN, DO YOU SEE YOURSELF CREATING A FAMILY OF CHARACTERS (MAYBE EVEN A SHARED “LOTTERING UNIVERSE”) OR DO YOU PREFER EACH STORY TO STAND ALONE?
Lol, get out of my head. IB
I CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT…
BY VENECIA VALENTINE
WE ALL HAVE THAT ONE ITEM WE CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT, WHETHER IT’S A COMFORTING OBJECT FOR SOME OR JUST A LIFELINE FOR OTHERS. WHATEVER YOU PREFER TO CALL IT, IT WON’T BE LEFT BEHIND, WILL IT?
WE ASKED SOME OF OUR FAVOURITES THE QUESTION: ‘WHAT ARE THE THREE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS YOU SIMPLY CAN’T LEAVE THE HOUSE WITHOUT?’
LEIGH-ANNE WILLIAMS, MEDIA PERSONALITY
1. Cellphone: First and foremost, my mobile; it’s like my office, so I never go anywhere without it.
2. Make up: Secondly, it would be my makeup bag. As a freelancer working on various public platforms, I need to be able to do touch-ups wherever and whenever required.
3. Cream: And, lastly, it’s my body cream. Ashiness loves me, but I don’t love it back, so I need to care for my hands, elbows, and ankles daily because when I see ashiness, I can’t unsee it.
GOVAN WHITTLES, TV PRESENTER
1. If you know: My phone, so my wife can always reach me.
2. Quick brag: A Polaroid of my children because I love to boast about them.
3. Must: And my medical aid card, because it’s dangerous out on these streets.
SHIMMY ISAACS, ACTRESS AND COMEDIAN
1. My sunglasses: Tom Ford’s polarised sunglasses, I’m always on the road. When I wear those sunglasses, my vision is clear, I know where I’m going, and I never get lost.
2. Charge me up: I’ve lost so many power banks, and I just can’t keep up anymore. Now I just walk around with my charger.
3. Perfume: My Tom Ford Oud Wood. It’s easy, always smells good! I’ve realised that when you smell good, people treat you differently.
MARIO HAUPT, ACTOR
ANGEL CAMPEY, RADIO PRESENTER AND COMEDIAN
1. Lippies: Five types of lipstick and lipgloss that I will forget to use every day.
2. Snack: A bag of almonds in my handbag to snack on for blood sugar!
3. Bling: Most importantly, my brand-new engagement ring!
DALIN OLIVER, COMEDIAN
1. The ring: My wedding ring. I take it off when I sleep and love putting it back on every day. It’s like connecting to Wi-Fi or switching my data back on. Nothing works properly until it’s there.
2. Shades: Sunglasses. Not because I want to look cool, but because my eyes are very sensitive. I’ve basically morphed into an “uncle” haha and am one squint away from asking for a senior citizen discount.
3. Hotline: My phone. Everything I need is on here. Without it, I’d be lost. It’s essential. However, I do have a love-hate relationship with technology and wish I didn’t always have to take it everywhere and be busy on it. Nevertheless, here we are. It’s 2025.
Fun fact: I can’t remember my wife’s number off by heart, but I can still recall the Nokia ringtone and snake sound. What a time.
My phone: It’s my lifeline, my diary and my camera all in one. If I leave it behind, my whole day feels upside down.
A book: I always carry one. It’s the perfect travel companion, whether I’m waiting at a gate or sitting in a coffee shop.
Headphones: They create my own little bubble. Sometimes I need music, sometimes silence, but always space to simply be.
LASIZWE SLAMS SARS’S TAX ON INFLUENCERS
Television personality and content creator Lasizwe Dambuza has criticised SARS’s decision to tax influencers, saying it’s unfair to creators already struggling with a stable income. While many assume the job is glamorous, Lasizwe insists it’s far from that. “We spend more than we earn on makeup, transport, and outfits – sometimes just to show up. And now, even goodie bags are seen as taxable,” the Awkward Dates host shared.
THE FUNNY CHEF SHARES PREGNANCY NEWS
South African comedian and content creator Lebogang “The Funny Chef” Tlokana has announced she is expecting her first child. Known for keeping her private life out of the spotlight, Tlokana delighted fans with a pregnancy photoshoot and a heartfelt message to her baby: “I’m going to love you till I draw my last breath … yet here we are, my little one … here we are.”
THUSO MBEDU SHINES IN HBO’S TASK
South Africa’s Thuso Mbedu continues making her mark in Hollywood, this time for her role as Sgt. Aleah Clinton in the gritty HBO crime drama Task. The show has received glowing reviews, with Mbedu’s performance drawing particular praise. Task holds an impressive 89% critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with some calling it “the best crime thriller of the year”. Watch it now on Showmax.

IF YOU WEREN’T AN INFLUENCER, WHAT CAREER PATH WOULD YOU BE PURSUING TODAY?
If I weren’t an influencer, I would have loved to pursue a career in the medical field. Helping people and making a real difference in their lives has always been something close to my heart.
WHAT’S ONE WORD THAT BEST DESCRIBES YOUR CONTENT STYLE?
“Dynamic” because my content combines fun, creativity, positive energy, and plenty of smiles all in one.
WHAT’S THE MOST ENJOYABLE CAMPAIGN YOU’VE DONE SO FAR?
Honestly, I’ve really enjoyed working with every brand I’ve collaborated with, so it’s difficult to choose just one favourite. Each campaign has been fun and unique in its own way.
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH NEGATIVE COMMENTS?
I won’t deny that sometimes negative comments do affect me. But most of the time, I’ve learned to overlook them because people will always have their opinions. I’ve come to peace with this, and it also helps knowing that my wonderful followers often defend me.

WHAT IS ONE SMALL HABIT THAT HAS TRANSFORMED YOUR DAILY ROUTINE?
Starting my day with prayer. Taking a moment to ask for God’s guidance and protection gives me clarity and a sense of direction for whatever lies ahead. It helps me stay grounded and approach my day with focus and a positive attitude.
WHO’S YOUR DREAM COLLABORATION – DEAD OR ALIVE, INFLUENCER OR CELEBRITY?
Rihanna! I have been a fan since her very first single, “Pon de Replay”, and her journey as an artist, entrepreneur, and cultural icon has always inspired me.
MOST FUN CAMPAIGN YOU’VE DONE SO FAR?
The Q4 Fuel campaign was the most enjoyable for me because it pushed me outside of my comfort zone. I had to dance in public while leading the team, even though I had just met them.
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH NEGATIVE COMMENTS?
Negative comments can be tough, and accepting criticism isn’t always easy. I’ve faced many bodyshaming remarks that made me doubt myself. Over time, I’ve learned to focus on constructive feedback and dismiss negativity that doesn’t help me.
5 MINUTES WITH COMEDIAN
Tumi Morake:
FEARLESS, FUNNY, AND UNAPOLOGETICALLY TRAILBLAZING
TUMI MORAKE IS A PIONEERING SOUTH AFRICAN COMEDIAN, ACTRESS, WRITER, AND PRODUCER WHO HAS FIRMLY ESTABLISHED HERSELF AS ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S MOST INFLUENTIAL VOICES.
BY VENECIA VALENTINE
Known for her sharp wit and fearless honesty, she masterfully blends humour with social commentary, using the stage and screen to challenge norms while entertaining audiences both locally and internationally.
YOUR COMEDY OFTEN BLENDS HUMOUR WITH HARD TRUTHS. HOW DO YOU FIND THE RIGHT BALANCE BETWEEN MAKING PEOPLE LAUGH AND MAKING THEM THINK?
I believe people wouldn’t be laughing if they weren’t thinking. We all share similar fears, experiences, and universal truths that we can’t deny, and the key is to be authentic, not judgmental or detached from the topic. I am laughing with you, not at you. Like Oprah with punchlines: You get a laugh, you get a laugh, everyone gets a laugh.
YOU’VE PAVED THE WAY FOR WOMEN IN SA COMEDY. WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED, AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
I reckon balancing family and work, and learning to stand up for myself to be paid what I deserve when I enter corporate spaces. I believe safety was the biggest challenge. The blessing of women in comedy, especially in South Africa, is that the industry is hungry for female voices. I suppose the challenge was figuring out how long it would take for stitches to heal after childbirth before returning to the stage.
HOW DOES SA’S SOCIAL AND POLITICAL CLIMATE SHAPE YOUR MATERIAL?
The beauty of South Africa is that, unlike my experiences when I travel, we truly are a melting pot of culture. We are intertwined in food, language, and history. I tend to avoid issues that do not resonate with me because I prefer comedy with heart, comedy that comes from a place of truth. We are not as polarised as we think we are, and that is the sweet spot I get from our DNA as a country.
LOOKING BACK, WHICH PERFORMANCE OR PROJECT HAS BEEN THE MOST DEFINING MOMENT OF YOUR CAREER SO FAR?
Hosting my talk show, #WTFTumi, was definitely a highlight. It was a one-way ticket across all of SA and truly ahead of its time. I got to play and showcase the playful side of some of our favourite celebrities and politicians. Also, come on, where else have you seen a show with a jacuzzi in the studio?
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU OFFER TO YOUNG COMEDIANS, ESPECIALLY WOMEN, WHO WANT TO BREAK INTO THE INDUSTRY?
Don’t seek permission! Just dive in and do it with conviction. Never apologise for being a woman, and don’t obsess over it: Just. Be. Funny. IB
Maxine
THE NEW VOICE OF SOUTH AFRICAN SOUL
BY BYRON LUKAS
RAISED ON RHYTHM, FORGED BY PASSION, AND FUELLED BY FEARLESS CREATIVITY, MAXINE IS CHARTING HER OWN COURSE. WITH HITS LIKE “WHAT YOU WANT” AND “AN UNDENIABLE PRESENCE”, SHE’S REWRITING WHAT IT MEANS TO BE A SOUTH AFRICAN ARTIST ON THE GLOBAL STAGE.
There’s a certain magic about Maxine –something in the velvet smoothness of her voice, the way she glides between jazz, soul, R&B, and pop like a maestro behind the decks of life’s ultimate playlist. The Cape Town-based singer, songwriter, and composer isn’t just performing music – she’s reimagining the very sound of South African soul, one silky note at a time.
Music has always been in her blood. Growing up in a home alive with melodies and late-night jam sessions, Maxine was raised on rhythm.
Her father, jazz legend Richard Ceasar, was her first mentor, nurturing her love for music long before she realised it would become her calling.
Alongside her brother, Vaughan Ceasar, she ventured into international waters early – the siblings spent years performing aboard the luxury Regent Seven Seas Mariner, turning cruise ship
stages into intimate jazz lounges while their peers were still grappling with algebra.
But Maxine wasn’t meant to stay in anyone’s shadow – not even her father’s. Over the years, she has carved her own path, emerging as one of Cape Town’s most captivating and versatile voices. She’s wowed audiences at festivals, added sparkle to corporate stages, and built a reputation as a performer who can hold her own anywhere.
Her 2018 debut single, “White Noise”, revealed a bold artistic spirit, blending futuristic tones that signaled her fearless approach to experimentation. Beyond the microphone, Maxine demonstrated her depth as a songwriter, crafting music for the award-winning stage play Tip-ex and contributing a soul-stirring track to the SA coming-of-age film, 2 Thirds of a Man, which gained praise on the festival circuit.
In 2024 her R&B-influenced single “What You Want” lit up local airwaves, a song Maxine describes as “a love letter to finding your own rhythm”. Judging by its reception, the message resonated deeply.
At just 32, Maxine’s career feels less like a journey and more like a movement. She’s redefining what it means to be a South African artist on the global music stage – fearlessly blending genres, telling genuine stories, and drawing audiences in with every lyric. Hers is a voice you don’t just hear; it’s one you feel. IB

KNOW YOUR OCTOBER MUSIC HISTORY
LISTEN UP, SWIFTIES…
On 10 October 2014, Taylor Swift was named Billboard’s Woman of the Year, marking a historic milestone as the first artist to receive this prestigious accolade twice. Billboard’s decision to honour Swift again followed a successful year marked by the release of her critically acclaimed album, 1989, which topped charts and earned praise for its bold sound and lyrical depth. The album’s impact was clear in a string of hits, including “Shake It Off” and “Blank Space,” both showcasing her gift for catchy hooks and relatable storytelling.
Now, 11 years later, Swifties eagerly await her 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl
FROM THE ARMY TO MUSIC STARDOM
In October 2002, James Blunt left the British Army after six years of service in the cavalry regiment, driven by what he later described as a “blind, naive conviction” that he could succeed in music. Thankfully, he followed that instinct. Just two years later, he burst onto the scene with his debut album Back to Bedlam, featuring iconic tracks like “You’re Beautiful” and “Goodbye My Lover.”
Since then, Blunt has released six more studio albums, sold over 20 million records worldwide, and earned multiple awards and Grammy nominations.
LIAM PAYNE DEAD AT 31
It’s hard to believe that 16 October marks one year since Liam Payne’s passing. At just 31, the former One Direction member died after a tragic fall from the balcony of the CasaSur hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he had been on holiday. His death cast a sombre shadow over the music world, prompting an outpouring of tributes from fans and fellow artists. Social media was flooded with messages of grief and disbelief, as many reflected on Payne’s musical legacy and vibrant spirit. He was celebrated not only for his chart-topping hits, but also for his philanthropy and the deep, genuine bond he shared with his fans.

Fly ing the South African flag on the international stage isn’t just a moment. For surfing sensation, Jordy Smith, it’s a mission, a duty, and a source of unwavering pride.
“I love this country so much and it’s truly shaped me, so it’s the highest honour to have the flag on my jersey when I paddle out,” he says, his eyes lighting up at the thought of racing down a wave with his nation’s colours streaming behind him.
FORGED BY THE COASTLINE
From Durban’s warm waters to the legendary
breaks of Jeffrey’s Bay, South Africa’s coastline has been more than a playground, it’s been a training ground. Growing up between these iconic surf spots sharpened Jordy’s competitive edge and deepened his love for the ocean.
“South African athletes tend to defy the odds. That belief, that even as a small nation we are just as capable and deserving, has shaped my spirit. The waves at home
are incredible, and growing up between Durban and J-Bay made me the surfer I am today.”
SIXTEEN YEARS, COUNTLESS WAVES
Competing at the top level for over 16 years brings pressure, injuries, and sacrifices. Yet, after more than a decade on the World Surf League Tour and the Olympic stage, Jordy’s fire is still burning.
“I’ve always been competitive, but my love for surfing has kept me going this long. Even if I didn’t earn a cent, I’d still do it.
Now, with kids and family, there’s a new motivation. If I’m away from them, I need to make it worth it and give my all.”
BREAKING BARRIERS IN SURF CULTURE
Surf culture in South Africa is evolving, though access remains a hurdle for many. Jordy believes representation and opportunity go hand in hand.
“We’ve got incredible surfers of colour at home. It’s about more than just access; it’s showing kids that people who look like them can do this too. I’m proud of organisations like Surfers Not Street Children who are paving the way. The next 10–20 years will see huge growth in South African surfing.”
PIPELINE TO THE SOUTH COAST
Jordy has surfed iconic breaks from Hawaii’s Pipeline to Tahiti and Bali, yet his heart stays rooted in the South Coast.
“I’ve had unforgettable waves at Pipeline and Tahiti, but the most special sessions have been at home on the South Coast with close friends. Those days are unbeatable.”
FAMILY, FOCUS, AND PERSPECTIVE
Balancing global competition and family life has given him a new perspective.
“With age, you realise how precious moments with family and friends are. I still hate losing, but I’m grounded by gratitude for what I have. Injuries and missed chances are part of the game, but perspective is everything. Resilience isn’t about avoiding setbacks, it’s about finding peace in the process.”
A SURF ROAD TRIP TO REMEMBER
When asked for the ultimate South African surf itinerary, he doesn’t hesitate: “Start in Cape Town for its waves and incredible food, then head up to Victoria Bay and Jeffrey’s Bay, a true surf mecca, before finishing in Durban. It’s the perfect surf road trip.” IB

A FUNERAL SERVICE INNOVATION AQUAMATION
Although death is inevitable, many people find it difficult to talk about. Uncomfortable as it may be, it is crucial to share your funeral wishes with your loved ones. This includes conversations on whether you’d prefer a grave burial, cremation or Aquamation (also known as alkaline hydrolysis or water-based cremation).
AVBOB launched Aquamation in South Africa in 2019 and, at present, it is only available at the AVBOB Maitland Funeral Parlour in Cape Town and the AVBOB Pretoria West branch in Gauteng. Considering South Africa’s growing awareness of environmental issues, this offering comes at a good time, and AVBOB is investing heavily into it, going forward.”
UNDERSTANDING AQUAMATION
The provision of a dignified send-off for loved ones has been part of AVBOB’s DNA for 107 years and it continues to lead the way in bringing this environmentally-friendly funeral service innovation to South Africa.
AVBOB plans to expand its Aquamation ser vice to three additional branches (one each in KwaZulu-Natal, Eastern Cape and Western Cape) in the next few years.
THE RISE OF DIGITAL ART IN SOUTH AFRICA
BY BYRON LUKAS
DISCOVER HOW SOUTH AFRICAN ARTISTS ARE USING TECHNOLOGY NOT ONLY TO INNOVATE BUT ALSO TO PROTECT CULTURAL IDENTITY. FROM VIRTUAL EXHIBITIONS TO NFTS, THIS REVOLUTION IS TRANSFORMING THE WAY CREATIVITY IS CONCEIVED, SHARED, AND PRESERVED.
Technology’s impact on art is most clear in the rise of digital exhibitions. During and after the pandemic, platforms like Cape Town’s Zeitz MOCAA opened virtual doors, allowing local art to reach a global audience. For many emerging artists, their first gallery experiences were online, showing that access can be just as transformative as talent.
Experimentation has also thrived. In Johannesburg, collectives use projection mapping to turn buildings into lively canvases, merging street art with immersive theatre. Internationally recognised and Cape Town-based artist Faith XLVII has evolved her practice into digital installations, combining moving images with soundscapes that reimagine public art. Likewise, Bogosi Sekhukhuni and the CUSS Group explore online identity and internet politics through coding, video, and interactive works.
Photography and fashion-inspired visuals are also exploring new expressions. Trevor Stuurman combines traditional aesthetics with digital manipulation, creating narratives that are deeply South African but also connect globally. These pioneers highlight a truth: technology is not just a tool but a medium for pushing boundaries.
The world of NFTs has further broadened opportunities. While global excitement has cooled, South African artists are using the technology to protect ownership and avoid traditional gatekeepers. Emerging talents like Lethabo Huma are gaining international recognition, turning digital portraits into both cultural commentary and income sources.
Education is evolving with the times. Institutions such as the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Cape Town now offer programmes in digital art and creative coding,
TOP LEFT: AD PACEM Cincinnati , 2019- Faith XLVII/ Inka Kendzia TOP RIGHT: Bogosi Sekhukhuni, 2018, exhibition view, Foxy Production, New York BOTTOM: Self-discovery,2024- Lethabo Huma
preparing a new generation to master both technical and artistic aspects of this changing landscape.
What makes South Africa’s story distinctive is its focus on identity and community.
“FROM DIGITAL INSTALLATIONS AND INTERACTIVE GALLERIES TO NFTS AND AUGMENTED REALITY, CREATORS ARE EXPANDING THEIR CRAFT WHILE KEEPING STORYTELLING AT THE CORE.”
Technology here is not about showing off; it’s about safeguarding. From VR recreations of heritage sites to interactive projects addressing social justice, digital art promotes indigenous knowledge and provides a voice for marginalised groups.
As global creativity advances, South African artists demonstrate that innovation does not replace tradition – it enhances it. By integrating local heritage into digital art, they ensure culture develops while remaining deeply connected. The result? An art-tech movement that feels both resilient and pioneering. IB

WHAT REALLY sunscreens
BY DR ALEK NIKOLIC, AESTHETIC MEDICAL PRACTITIONER
WHEN IT COMES TO SUNSCREEN, EFFECTIVENESS DEPENDS ON THE ACTIVE INGREDIENTS THAT SHIELD THE SKIN FROM HARMFUL UV RADIATION.
Among the many available sunscreen options, three ingredients consistently stand out for their proven reliability across formulations and skin types.
ZINC OXIDE: THE GOLD STANDARD
Zinc oxide is considered the gold standard for sun protection, offering broad-spectrum defence against both UVA and UVB rays. This mineralbased ingredient acts as a physical barrier, forming an invisible shield that reflects radiation away from the skin.
What makes zinc oxide exceptional is its gentle nature and stability. Unlike chemical filters that might irritate sensitive skin, zinc oxide is well tolerated by individuals with rosacea, posttreatment sensitivity, or reactive skin. It is so safe that paediatric dermatologists recommend it for babies and young children. Its photostability also ensures long-lasting protection in the sun, although reapplication every two hours remains necessary.
TITANIUM
DIOXIDE: THE RELIABLE COMPANION
Often paired with zinc oxide, titanium dioxide also
offers broad-spectrum protection by reflecting UV rays. Thanks to micronised particles, it forms a lightweight barrier that feels comfortable on the skin, making it a popular choice in makeup products with built-in SPF. Its versatility ensures reliable sun protection without sacrificing cosmetic elegance.
OCTINOXATE: THE CHEMICAL ABSORBER
Octinoxate is a chemical filter that absorbs UVB rays and converts them into harmless heat. While effective when used with UVA-blocking ingredients, it has raised environmental concerns, especially about coral reef health. Consequently, reef-safe alternatives are becoming more popular, though octinoxate is still a common ingredient in many products.
INFORMED CHOICES FOR HEALTHY SKIN
Understanding what goes into sunscreen empowers consumers to select products that meet both their skin’s requirements and environmental principles. With zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and octinoxate at the forefront, the future of sun protection is characterised by science, safety, and more ingenious skincare. IB
SKINCARE TIPS WITH HANNON FAVOURITE
BY CHRISTINE STEYNBERG
I’VE LEARNT THAT GREAT SKIN ISN’T ABOUT PERFECTION; IT’S ABOUT CONSISTENCY, HYDRATION, AND A LITTLE HELP FROM MY HANNON FAVOURITES. THESE ARE MY GO-TO TIPS FOR KEEPING THAT GLOW GOING, NO MATTER THE SEASON OR STRESS LEVEL.
Over the years, I’ve learnt that caring for your skin is one of the best investments you can make. It’s not about hiding flaws – it’s about maintaining your natural glow for as long as possible. Here are my personal tips, along with some of my favourite HANNON products that I always keep close.
1. CLEANSE WITH CARE
The way you cleanse your face influences your entire routine. Avoid harsh soaps that strip the skin and leave it feeling tight. I love HANNON’s Gentle Facial Wash because it cleanses effectively, leaving my skin soft and refreshed.
2. HYDRATION IS NON-NEGOTIABLE
When your skin becomes dehydrated, fine lines seem more pronounced, and your complexion looks tired. Along with drinking plenty of water, I nourish my skin with HANNON’s Moisture Skin Care Combo. It’s my favourite for plump, hydrated, and healthylooking skin.
3. PROTECT AGAINST THE SUN
Sun damage is the biggest risk to youthful skin. My daily routine includes HANNON’s Sunscreen paired with the Face Perfecting
Primer. Together, they smooth my skin, offer invisible protection, and shield me from daily stressors.
4. LOVE YOUR EYES
The delicate eye area is often the first to show signs of ageing. I rely on HANNON’s AntiAgeing Eye Cream to reduce puffiness and keep the skin around my eyes soft and bright.
5. TREAT YOURSELF
Skincare should also feel indulgent. Once a week, I exfoliate and apply a mask to reset my skin. For daily renewal, HANNON’s Midnight Repair Serum gives me an instant lift and lasting freshness. IB

EVER NOTICE HOW SOME PEOPLE STEP OFF A RED-EYE FLIGHT LOOKING LIKE THEY’VE BEEN RELAXING IN FIRST CLASS, WHILE THE REST OF US FEEL AS IF WE’VE BEEN DRAGGED THROUGH BAGGAGE CLAIM? THE DIFFERENCE OFTEN COMES DOWN TO COLLAGEN AND ELASTIN, THE SKIN’S OWN DYNAMIC DUO FOR FIRM, SMOOTH, AND GLOWING SKIN.
Fr om your mid-20s, collagen gradually decreases by about 1% each year. By adopting smart habits, targeted skincare, and advanced treatments, you can preserve your skin’s elasticity into your 30s, 40s, and beyond.
At Skin Renewal, we consider radiant skin not just by chance, but as the outcome of science, lifestyle, and a touch of professional magic.
FEED YOUR SKIN FROM WITHIN
Think of your skin as a reflection of what you eat. When your body is well nourished, your collagen levels thrive.
• Vitamin C boosts collagen and defends against free radicals.
• Zinc acts behind the scenes like a ground crew, ensuring repairs stay on schedule.
• Amino acids (from lean protein, legumes, or even that trending bone broth) are the building blocks that form new collagen fibres.
POWERFUL TOPICAL ALLIES
Skincare can go beyond just the surface; the right actives encourage your skin’s natural renewal from within.
• Retinoids accelerate cell turnover and instruct your skin to produce more collagen.
• Peptides function like motivational coaches for your cells: “rebuild, repair, renew.”
• Antioxidants like Vitamin E and C (or Skin Renewal’s own Antioxidant Serum) protect against stress, smog, and that all-too-real jet lag.
ADVANCED TREATMENTS AT SKIN RENEWAL
When creams aren’t effective, technology takes charge. Think of this as your business-class upgrade for skin.
• Carboxytherapy: medical-grade CO₂ revs circulation, glow, and collagen.
• Microneedling: tiny precision channels kickstart your healing powers.
• Titan® & Nd: YAG Tightening: gentle energy to lift, firm, and keep things in place.
• Endymed RF with 3DEEP technology: deep cellular tightening for lasting firmness.
• RF Needling: the wake-up call collagen and elastin cannot ignore.
YOUR JOURNEY BEGINS NOW At Skin Renewal, we combine science, innovative technology, and doctor-led care to help you age gracefully and confidently. Radiant skin isn’t about chasing youth; it’s about feeling like your best self wherever life takes you, whether that’s the boardroom, the beach, or your next boarding gate. IB

HOUSE OF ONE:
HOUSE OF NOW
BY TEMO MPODI
IN TODAY’S DIGITAL ERA, COLLABORATIONS ARE EMERGING THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA. ONE OF THE MOST RECENT TO CAPTURE ATTENTION IS THE HOUSE OF ONE X SHEIN PARTNERSHIP – NOW AVAILABLE EXCLUSIVELY ON THE SHEIN WEBSITE.
WHAT DOES ‘OLD MONEY FASHION’ SIGNIFY FOR HOUSE OF ONE?
Ethel Sibanda (Strategy Lead): It’s what we refer to as heritage minimalism. It’s about dressing intentionally and choosing pieces that feel timeless and quietly sophisticated.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE BRAND NAME?
Warren Whitcher (Commercial Director): It originates from our roots. When we first launched, the brand was unisex and did not sell physical garments. Instead, we developed and
sold digital patterns – complete technical packs that customers could buy and make themselves. Each creation was unique; every garment was truly one-of-a-kind. That sense of individuality and self-expression is what inspired the name House of One.
THEY SAY TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK; HOW DOES THAT CONNECT TO THE HOUSE OF ONE BRAND?
Paul Nunes (Commercial Director): Of course, teamwork is at the heart of House of One. Our primary business is an advertising agency called Lost + Found, so none of us has a conventional fashion background. Each member of our closeknit team plays a vital role with their diverse skills. Varied skills and creative collaboration propel House of One.
“WE SEE EVERYTHING AS OUR MUSE”
WHICH BUSINESS SECRET DO YOU BELIEVE IS THE MOST VITAL FOR THE COMPANY’S SUCCESS?
Warren: There is no single ‘silver bullet’ for us; instead, it’s a combination of strategies we have tested that are effective. Most notably, an ‘aim very high’ approach guides everything we do. Secondly, building a young, dynamic, and hungry team is crucial. The final ‘secret sauce’ is discipline.
HOW DID YOU SECURE THE SHEIN DEAL?
Paul: Actually, they discovered us online. From the outset, we understood we needed to do things differently to stand out from other fashion brands. We created a three-part musical film, released a four-track EP to accompany it, developed an eight-part micro-film series, and supported it all with striking stills and video imagery.
We pulled out all the stops, and it paid off. SHEIN saw our work on Instagram and loved it.
HOW DO YOU MAKE SURE YOUR ENVIRONMENT REMAINS CREATIVELY SUPPORTIVE?
Ronaldo: By giving people the freedom to express themselves fully.
We believe creativity thrives in an environment where voices are heard and ideas are valued – no matter how unconventional they may seem at first, always.
WHAT
IS YOUR FAVOURITE FASHION FIND FOR SPRING?
Ronaldo: A softly tailored blazer in a pastel or neutral colour. It seems – versatile, seasonless, and effortlessly chic. Spring isn’t about finding a single item, though – it’s about curating pieces that feel both timeless and playful. IB
For Her Sundowner Style: Effortless Elegance
Navy blues and crisp whites remain timeless classics. Add soft beige and gold accessories, and you’ve created a luxurious look that’s perfect for ocean views, sunset watching, and cocktail sundowners on deck. Effortless chic meets feel-good style – the ultimate cruise-ready glamour.
Pastels remain a standout choice for stylish gentlemen. Combine them with 2025’s top fashion buzzwords for men’s spring/summer – quiet luxury, soft hues, and neutral tones – and you’ve got yourself a full-on luxury reset. Here’s some key inspiration to elevate your look.

YOU’VE TRAINED, YOU’VE RACED, AND NOW YOU’VE CROSSED THE FINISH LINE. THE MEDAL IS YOURS, THE CHEERS ARE FADING, AND EXHAUSTION HAS SETTLED IN. BUT HERE’S THE TRUTH: YOUR RACE ISN’T TRULY OVER. WHAT YOU DO NEXT CAN MAKE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BOUNCING BACK STRONGER OR HOBBLING FOR DAYS.
Crossing the finish line is just the beginning. Before you rest, keep this guide in mind to stay strong and ready for your next race.
KEEP MOVING
As tempting as it is to collapse, don’t. Gradually slow down with a few minutes of walking. This helps keep your blood circulating and eases muscle tension. Add gentle stretches to reduce stiffness and aid recovery.
HYDRATE AND REFUEL
Your body has used up its energy reserves. Rehydrate with fluids, electrolytes, and a balanced meal high in carbs and protein within the first hour. This helps prevent cramps and supports muscle repair.
REST IS TRAINING
Recovery is as important as training. Plan active recovery such as walking, swimming, or yoga, but avoid the temptation to jump straight into highintensity workouts. Allow your muscles at least a couple of days to recover.
ROLL IT OUT
Foam rolling and massage can be very effective within 24–48 hours. Both improve circulation, ease stiffness, and speed up recovery by reducing inflammation.
SLEEP HARD
The most effective recovery tool isn’t high-tech, it’s sleep. During deep rest, your body repairs damaged tissue. Aim for 7–9 hours to improve recovery and performance.
CALM INFLAMMATION
Some inflammation is normal, but excessive levels impede healing. Anti-inflammatory foods, ice baths, or appropriate supplements can help manage it.
LISTEN TO YOUR BODY
A mild ache is normal. Persistent sharp pain or swelling? That’s a warning sign, seek professional advice rather than pushing through.
Focusing on hydration, rest, sleep, and muscle care ensures you return stronger and ready for the next challenge. Recovery isn’t the end – it’s part of the race. IB

OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH – A PERFECT TIME TO HAVE AN OPEN, HONEST CONVERSATION ABOUT BREAST HEALTH. BY
According to CANSA, breast cancer is the most common cancer among South African women. The 2023 National Cancer Registry reports that 1 in 27 women will be diagnosed in their lifetime.
“One of the simplest, most empowering ways to care for your health is by performing regular breast self-examinations (BSEs),” says Dr Portia Mosadi, an obstetrician and gynaecologist at Netcare Rosebank and Netcare Pholoso Hospitals.
“It’s not about becoming obsessive, but rather familiarising yourself with your breasts. Knowing what’s normal for you will help you notice when something isn’t.”
START EARLY, STAY CONSISTENT
Dr Mosadi recommends monthly breast selfexams starting in your early 20s, ideally a few days after your period when breasts are less tender. If you don’t menstruate, pick a consistent day each month. Hormonal changes can affect breast texture, so timing matters. After menopause, lumps may be easier to detect due to less dense tissue.
YOUR 3-STEP BREAST EXAM ROUTINE
1. In the mirror: Stand tall with hands on hips. Check for changes in shape, size, dimpling, swelling, or nipple inversion. Raise your arms and repeat.
2. In the shower or lying down: Use circular
motions with the opposite hand to feel from collarbone to armpit. Gently check the nipple for discharge.
3. Lying down: Place a pillow under one shoulder to flatten the breast and repeat the same circular technique for a thorough check.
WHAT SHOULD YOU LOOK OUT FOR?
“Any changes to your breasts, including a new lump or thickened tissue, are worth checking,” says Dr Mosadi. In the early stages, breast tumours are most often painless, and other signs could include nipple discharge, skin dimpling, and swelling near the collarbone or armpits.
“Not all lumps are cancerous – many are harmless cysts,” reassures Dr Mosadi. “But always book an appointment with your doctor for a proper evaluation. From the age of 40, women should have mammograms at least every year or two years, or more frequently if they are at high risk.”
AND DON’T FORGET...
“Self-exams are great, but they’re just one part of the picture,” she adds. Mammograms, clinical examinations, knowing your family history and maintaining a healthy lifestyle all contribute to keeping your breasts healthy. IB

THINK COLLAGEN IS JUST FOR YOUR SKIN? THINK AGAIN. WITH BENEFITS RANGING FROM A RADIANT GLOW TO JOINT FLEXIBILITY AND GUT HEALTH, COLLAGEN IS REDEFINING DAILY WELLNESS.
Beauty isn’t just skin deep, but collagen ensures it shines through. Known as the body’s powerhouse protein, collagen helps nourish skin, strengthen nails, and improve elasticity, giving you that healthy glow we all desire. When you’re striving for radiant, revitalised skin, collagen is the silent powerhouse working behind the scenes.
THE POWER BEHIND COLLAGEN
Have you ever wondered what makes collagen so effective? According to Deborah Good, CEO of Youthology, the answer lies in bioactive blends that go beyond beauty.
“Premium bioactive collagen contains Types 1, 2, and 3, with hyaluronic acid and chondroitin, the perfect combination for optimal results,” says Good. “Yes, skin, hair, and nails benefit, but even more important to me are the gut support, joint rehabilitation, bone strengthening, and overall wellbeing benefits that come with consistent daily use.”
WHAT THE DIFFERENT TYPES DO
• Type 1 Collagen: The glow-giver. Supports skin elasticity, reduces fine lines, and helps
maintain that youthful radiance.
• Type 2 Collagen: The joint protector. Essential for flexibility and movement, but often missing in many supplements.
• Type 3 Collagen: The supporter. Promotes vascular health and overall well-being, keeping your body balanced from the inside out.
Good adds, “Joint flexibility and usefulness have to go hand-in-hand. That’s why including Type 2 collagen is so crucial.”
CONSISTENCY IS KEY
Daily use is what brings results. “What I love about our collagen is that it has a pleasant, creamy taste, making it easy to incorporate into your routine. I’ve seen people experience improved skin elasticity, reduced joint pain, and increased energy when they take it consistently,” says Good.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE GLOW
According to the MD Anderson Cancer Centre, collagen makes up about one-third of the protein in your body, supporting tissues such as skin, cartilage, and tendons. It’s not just about looking good – collagen is also about feeling good. IB

OF PROTEIN HERE FUTURE THE IS
BY MILOU STAUB
WHEN IT COMES TO NUTRITION, WE’RE OFTEN ADVISED TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX, BUT WHAT ABOUT THINKING OUTSIDE THE FARMYARD?
Across southern Africa, mopani worms have long been a staple in traditional diets, prized not only for their flavour but also for their notable nutritional benefits.
Now, as the world searches for sustainable food options, this modest caterpillar is attracting international attention as a possible future source of protein.
MOPANI WORMS ARE A RICH SOURCE OF HIGHQUALITY PROTEIN. IN FACT, THEY CONTAIN ABOUT 60% PROTEIN PER GRAM, COMPARED TO JUST 26% IN BEEF.
Alongside protein, they are naturally high in fibre, Omega-3 fatty acids, essential amino acids, and minerals like iron and magnesium.
These nutrients collectively support muscle recovery, brain health, and energy generation – making them especially beneficial for active lifestyles.
Beyond health advantages, mopani worms also meet sustainability standards.
Producing beef requires approximately 10kg of feed for each 1kg of meat, whereas mopani worms thrive on just 3kg of mopani leaves for the same yield.
They also emit considerably fewer greenhouse gases than livestock, making them an environmentally friendly choice for those pursuing climate-conscious diets.

Although Mopani worms have been eaten in rural homes for generations – often fried, stewed, or

A FAMILY HOME EMBRACING Mpumalanga’slandscape
BY JOHAN VERMEULEN
HOUSE TOLMAY IN MPUMALANGA BLENDS ARCHITECTURE WITH NATURE, CURVING AROUND TREES AND ROCKY OUTCROPS TO CREATE A SANCTUARY ROOTED IN THE BUSHVELD.
On a north-facing hectare within a Bushveld Estate in Mpumalanga, the design process for House Tolmay started with a thorough site analysis.
For Mellet and Human, this involved more than just understanding the slope and sun path; it
required mapping the existing trees, preserving the rocky outcrops, and positioning the home to frame specific views while offering shelter from the elements. The land itself dictated the initial and most vital design decisions.
The brief was for a forever home for clients entering their golden years. A sanctuary that
was both entirely secure and completely free. The challenge was to leave a human footprint on this pristine canvas without leaving a scar.
The estate guidelines prescribed a rhythm of low-pitched, tiled roofs connected by flat concrete sections. However, these man-made, guided features found their counterpoint and complement in the natural arrangement of the landscape itself.
THE DISAPPEARING ACT
How does a house become part of the landscape? You don’t construct a single large block. Instead, you split the design into smaller, connected pavilions that sit softly into the slope, as if they had always been there.
The existing trees and rocky outcrops were not obstacles; they served as the main architects of this project. The house curves around them, respects them, and in doing so, secures its place.
The material palette acts as a heartfelt homage to the Lowveld: a blend of rough plaster, natural rock, and lush face brick. These textures do more than just complement the surroundings; they engage with them, shifting with the light of the day, from the bright, crisp morning sun to the warm, golden afternoon glow.
THE ART OF “CAPTURING THE BREEZE”
A Lowveld summer should not be underestimated. Mellet and Human’s design allows it to breathe. High ceilings draw the heat upwards, away from living spaces. Wide overhangs offer ample shade, casting cool shadows inside. But the real charm lies in the cross-ventilation.
A network of sliding doors and windows, carefully positioned, captures the summer breezes that drift across the plains. The house does not resist the climate; instead, it utilises the environment for natural cooling, a key element of its sustainable design.
THE SEAMLESS SAFARI
The main living area is the centre of the home. An open-plan lounge, dining, and kitchen space that feels less like a room and more like a privileged viewing deck onto the African theatre. With pocket sliders fully opened, the boundaries between inside and outside don’t just blur; they disappear.
Flanking this central area are two private en-suite bedrooms, positioned as tranquil retreats on opposite sides. Here, privacy is paramount, but the connection to the wild remains intact. Even from the bath, one’s gaze is drawn to the thorn trees and the free-roaming wildlife, making the most intimate moments feel linked to the vast outdoors.
THE “NEW” LIVING ROOM
Under a covered patio, the architects designed what they call the ‘outdoor lounge’. This is not just a veranda or a “stoep”; it is a fully furnished space
a crackling fire, beneath a blanket of Mpumalanga stars. It is the quintessential safari experience, but it requires no jeep, no guide. It is simply home.
A SELF-SUFFICIENT SANCTUARY
House Tolmay is not just integrated into its environment; it bears responsibility towards it. Equipped with solar energy and water tanks, it remains self-sufficient— a subtle nod to a future where living in harmony with nature is not merely an aesthetic choice but an ethical obligation.
For Mellet and Human Architects, House Tolmay is more than just a building; it reflects a philosophy. It shows that the most luxurious home is not one that demands attention, but one that reveals the luxury already present in the land.
It is a sturdy, beautiful, and respectful place to stand and observe the magnificent Lowveld world pass by. It is not merely a residence; it is a lasting and honoured landmark on the land. Not House Tolmay, but Home Tolmay. IB
for socialising, reading, or simply relaxing. It flows seamlessly to the pool and extends to the boma, which is beautifully arranged around an impressive rocky outcrop.

IT’S TIME TO Intention!Clutter with
BY CHARIS TORRANCE
IF YOU’RE BORED WITH IMMACULATE, STERILISED INTERIORS THAT LOOK MORE LIKE SHOWROOMS THAN REAL HOMES, YOU’RE NOT ALONE. A NEW DÉCOR TREND IS EMERGING, AND IT’S CHARMINGLY REBELLIOUS.
Meet intentional clutter: a warm, playful trend that’s giving minimalism a break. “Intentional clutter is the art of deliberately filling and layering your space with objects and pieces that matter,” says Maretha Geyser, Head of Interior Design at IIE Vega “Those that bring you joy, spark conversations or tell a personal story.”
So no, it’s not the same as chaos. And it’s certainly not about being messy just for the sake of it.
Instead, intentional clutter features curated items with significance – consider carefully selected keepsakes, cheerful trinkets, and soulful design.
THE SOFTER SIDE OF MAXIMALISM
Unlike traditional clutter (the kind you really should Marie Kondo your way through), or even the loudness of maximalism, intentional clutter feels softer and more personal.
“It is the gentle rebellion against the minimalist grey, black and white sterile interiors we have seen over the years,” says Maretha. “Instead, intentional clutter reintroduces warmth, colour, joy and playfulness back into the spaces where we live, work and connect.”
It’s the interior version of a happy sigh – where books are stacked with love, family heirlooms share shelves with thrift shop treasures, and every item has a story.
“People are hungry for rooms that lift their spirits, radiate happiness and surround them with objects that remind them of joyful times and cherished memories.”
BALANCING CURATED AND CHAOTIC
Here’s the million-dollar question: how do you keep your joyful jumble from spiralling into chaos? The answer? Be intentional.
“Every item should carry meaning, whether sentimental or functional,” Maretha explains. Her advice? Start with one statement piece that sets the tone.
“This could be an artwork, a statement vase, a sculpture or your favourite piece of furniture, see it as the joyful hero of the space.” Then, build around it with smaller pieces that complement it – in terms of colour, texture, or theme.
Let your own happiness be your guiding star. “Choose pieces that bring a smile, spark curiosity or evoke a memory.”
And here’s a tip: remember to give your space room to breathe.
“Allow for negative space… give the eye a chance to rest. When you strike the right balance between lively clusters of objects and calm breathing spaces, it ensures the room feels vibrant without becoming chaotic, messy or unplanned,” Maretha says.
COMMON PITFALLS (AND HOW TO AVOID THEM)
We’ve all been there: one moment you’re crafting a lovely vignette, and the next, it appears as if a flea market has gone off. According to Maretha, one of the biggest mistakes is believing that having more possessions means having more style.
“Intentional clutter is putting thought into where objects are placed in a space to create a unified story that feels balanced and personal,” she says. It’s not merely about shoving everything you own onto a shelf.
ANOTHER COMMON TRAP? MONOTONY.
The fix is simple but often overlooked: “Avoid overloading the space with only one kind of object, for example, filling it only with books, as this can often feel flat. Mix up the objects and ensure various heights and shapes to create depth and interest.”
SOURCING THE GOOD STUFF
Intentional clutter doesn’t originate from a chain store. It comes from you.
“Intentional clutter celebrates an individual’s personality, and therefore personal items should be central to it,” Maretha says. “Items that bring you joy, souvenirs, quirky objects, family heirlooms, things you’ve buried away in your cupboards for years.”
That means it’s time to explore your memory box, revisit the charity shop, or even take a walk in nature.
“Vintage and thrifted items add character to the space, which new store-bought items might lack. Nature can also be a source of inspiration – stones, plants, shells can all bring texture and warmth to a space.”
EMBRACE THE CLUTTER (YES, REALLY!)
At its core, intentional clutter isn’t merely a trend; it’s a heartfelt homage to stories, nostalgia, happiness, and the charming randomness of life – a curated chaos that celebrates personality over perfection.
It’s about surrounding yourself with items that spark joy, not just fill space.
So go ahead, stack those art books, display that quirky ceramic chicken, and finally give your living room the bold personality it has been craving.
Just remember: clutter with intention, not confusion. Or, as Maretha puts it, “See each object as a piece of the joyful artwork you are producing.” IB

HELLO AGAIN, IT’S ME, THE INBOUND SA DRIVER, BACK WITH A BANG, AND I WANT TO INTRODUCE YOU TO MY NEW AUTOMOTIVE CRUSH: THE JAECOO J7 [GLACIER], ALSO KNOWN AS THE MIDDLE CHILD. LISTEN, I SPENT A WHOLE WEEK WITH THIS SUV, AND LET’S JUST SAY IT TEASED ALL MY SENSES IN THE MOST DELIGHTFULLY CHEEKY WAY.
Hey, sexy lady! When the Jaecoo J7 appeared, it radiated that bold, boxy elegance like a suit tailored by Cupid himself. Its striking grille and Rolleylike cheekbones (think tall, vertical slats and slim LED DRLs) gave me an instant love-at-first-sight experience. It’s as if Range Rover style collided with Chinese ingenuity for a passionate encounter.
IT’S GIVING COSY…

Paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, this SUV can accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in just over 8 seconds – a pleasant surprise for a vehicle that looks this stylish. The Glacier’s front-wheeldrive system maintains a sporty feel, while the 7.0 L/100km fuel consumption means you’ll rarely need to stop for fuel.
The boot offers a generous 412 litres, expanding to a spacious 1,335 litres when the seats are folded; ideal for DIY shopping, beach gear, or late-night snack runs. Jaecoo didn’t compromise on safety. The Glacier is equipped with eight airbags, including front, side, and curtain airbags, as well as a driver knee airbag. Stability control, traction control, and brake assist come as standard, ensuring you and your passengers are well-protected on every journey.
JUST THE TWO OF US
Driving the Jaecoo J7 Glacier is like going on a first date with someone who keeps the conversation lively. The ride is smooth, the handling is responsive, and the cabin remains impressively quiet, even at motorway speeds. A ROMANTIC ESCAPE in the Cape Winelands
BY BYRON LUKAS
FRANSCHHOEK SEDUCES WITH FINE DINING, WORLD-CLASS WINES, AND BREATHTAKING LANDSCAPES. EVERY MOMENT FEELS LIKE A LOVE LETTER TO THE SENSES. COME CURIOUS –LEAVE HOPELESSLY ENCHANTED.
Discover the enchanting charm of Franschhoek, where fine dining, exquisite wines, boutique art galleries, and stunning landscapes unite to create an unforgettable escape in the majestic Cape Winelands.
This is no ordinary destination – it’s a flirtation with indulgence, a valley that stays in memory like a stolen kiss, lingering long after the moment fades.
EAT: A SEDUCTION OF FLAVOURS
Franschhoek doesn’t just feed you – it flirts, teases, and spoils.
Fine dining here is less about eating and more about surrendering to an experience. Slip into La Petite Colombe, where each course arrives like a love letter from the chef, a carefully choreographed performance of flavour and artistry.
At Le Coin Français, Chef Darren Badenhorst combines French heritage with contemporary flair, crafting dishes that are as much visual poetry as culinary masterpieces. Prefer something more relaxed? The French Connection Bistro is where locals and travellers gather, sharing hearty plates, crisp wines, and the warm, inviting atmosphere that makes meals unforgettable.
Wine lies at the core of Franschhoek’s love for indulgence. At Haute Cabrière, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir dominate, with sweeping valley views enchanting visitors before the first sip. La Motte heightens sophistication with art-lined tasting rooms and seasonal menus that highlight the Cape’s finest produce. Meanwhile, Grande Provence is part vineyard, part gallery, part lifestyle dream — where walks through the vines meet contemporary art, and wines linger on the palate like a stolen kiss.
Mornings often begin with buttery croissants and silky flat whites at The Hoek Espresso Bar. Later, take a risk at De Villiers Chocolate Café, where truffles are paired with wines in a decadent dance. For those who prefer a hands-on experience, Franschhoek Kitchen offers cooking classes where South African ingredients meet French techniques.
Mont Rochelle Nature Reserve features trails where each viewpoint feels like a love letter written in mountain ink. Saddle up for a horseback ride through vineyards, with the scent of grapes and earth carried by the breeze. Cyclists can weave between vines and villages, with the scenery transforming between postcard and painting at every turn.
History enhances the valley’s charm. The Huguenot Memorial Museum showcases the French settlers who brought their vines, traditions, and craft to these slopes. Nearby, the Huguenot Monument stands tall – a proud symbol of heritage, resilience, and legacy.
And then there’s the Franschhoek Wine Tram – a blend of transport and temptation. Hop on, hop off, sip, swirl, repeat. Responsible? Maybe not. Irresistible? Absolutely.
PLAY: PLEASURE BEYOND THE TABLE
While the plates and pours tempt you, Franschhoek’s valley provides diversions that invite you outdoors and into culture.
Art in Franschhoek does not whisper; it courts your imagination with bold elegance. At Everard Read and The Gallery at Grande Provence, canvases and sculptures pulse with creativity and soul.
If you plan your visit wisely, the valley knows how to celebrate too. July’s Bastille Festival radiates joie de vivre into the streets, while the Cap Classique & Champagne Festival is pure, sparkling seduction that lingers like a fine vintage.
STAY: BEDS WORTH LINGERING IN
For luxurious escapes, Leeu Estates offers suites overlooking rolling vineyards like private retreats. La Residence is unapologetically indulgent, with chandeliers, velvet, and views so mesmerising that the outside world feels irrelevant.
If intimacy is what you seek, Akademie Street Boutique Hotel offers secluded cottages and garden pools, perfect for enjoying wine under the stars. Maison Cabrière exemplifies chic minimalism with a hint of romance, while Last Word Franschhoek provides boutique comfort infused with glamour. Families might prefer Rickety Bridge Manor House, where farm-style charm meets luxury and children can roam freely while parents indulge in another glass of Syrah.
EXPLORE: HIDDEN CORNERS AND SCANDALOUS VIEWS
Arrive through the Franschhoek Pass, a winding journey that unfolds the valley bend by bend, with each turn revealing new vistas of vines, sky, and rugged peaks.
The village charms just as much as the valley. Stroll along the main street, where boutiques tempt with silks, antiques, and handcrafted curiosities. Saturdays come alive with the Village Market, a vibrant event of artisanal cheeses, live music, and the kind of friendly atmosphere where strangers quickly feel like friends.
Venture back into Mont Rochelle for trails that whisper of seclusion. While Stellenbosch and
Paarl are nearby, Franschhoek’s magnetic pull often keeps visitors delightfully captivated.
ROCKSTAR FOR A DAY: THE 24HOUR FRANSCHHOEK FANTASY
What if your bank balance has just hit the jackpot? Here’s how to spend like a rockstar in Franschhoek.
Morning starts wrapped in silk sheets at La Residence, where breakfast features oysters, croissants, and bubbly. By midday, you’ve chartered the Wine Tram for yourself, enjoying tastings at Haute Cabrière and La Motte while winemakers uncork the “hidden treasures” usually kept for themselves.
Lunch at La Petite Colombe offers an unforgettable tasting experience, with each course designed to tempt and delight. Afterwards, a private helicopter takes you over the valley, landing on a mountaintop for champagne. Hiking, but with sparkle.
As evening falls, wander through galleries and mingle before settling into Le Coin Français for a candlelit dinner accompanied by live jazz. By midnight, retreat to your private pool, Dom Pérignon in hand, beneath the stars of Franschhoek shining above. Darling, the valley has never looked more breathtaking. IB

SOUTH AFRICA’S DESERT WONDER
BY MARTIN BRIGGS
IN THE HEART OF THE NORTHERN CAPE, THE ORANGE RIVER PLUNGES 56 METRES INTO A VAST CANYON, CREATING THE AWE-INSPIRING AUGRABIES FALLS. THIS NATIONAL PARK OFFERS RAW BEAUTY, RICH HISTORY, AND A POWERFUL REMINDER OF NATURE’S FORCE.
In South Africa’s Northern Cape, where desert silence stretches for miles and granite cliffs shine beneath a blazing sun, lies one of the country’s most extraordinary natural landmarks: Augrabies Falls. Known to the Khoekhoe people as Aukoerebis – ‘the place of great noise’ – the falls powerfully cascade into a canyon of remarkable depth, creating a spectacle that has captivated travellers for centuries.
This isn’t a gentle waterfall framed by lush greenery. Augrabies is stark, elemental, and raw. The Orange River, South Africa’s largest, stretches across kilometres of arid landscape before unleashing its full force into the gorge. The result is a 56m drop that becomes a thunderous wall of water during flood season, carving its way through some of the oldest rock formations on Earth.
A NATIONAL TREASURE SINCE 1966
Augrabies Falls National Park was founded in 1966, safeguarding this fragile and truly extraordinary desert ecosystem. Today, the park spans over 800km², encompassing not just the waterfalls and gorge but also large areas of semiarid savannah, granite outcrops, and riverine vegetation.
Visitors often mistake the gorge’s vast canyon walls for the falls themselves. The gorge plunges to a depth of 240m at its deepest and stretches for 18km downstream, making it both a geological and scenic marvel. It is also a living laboratory: geologists study the erosive power of water on granite, while ecologists marvel at how life endures in such a harsh environment.
In flood years, Augrabies becomes almost unrecognisable. During the great floods of 1988, water flows reached an estimated 7 800m3 per second – more than three times Niagara Falls’ seasonal average. Even during smaller floods, such as those of 2006, Augrabies showed its power with flow rates of 6 800m3 per second, surpassing many of the world’s famous waterfalls.
George Thompson, guided by the Korana people, visited the site in 1826. Attempting to establish a colonial presence on the landscape, he named it “King George’s Cataract” in honour of George IV. The indigenous name, however, endured – a rare victory for heritage over empire. Local memory also preserves figures like Klaas Pofadder, a Korana leader who lived on an island just upstream. His kraal became a centre for his community, and today “Klaas Island” remains a reminder of this complex human history.
A DESERT THAT TEEMS WITH LIFE
Although the landscape may appear harsh, Augrabies National Park demonstrates itself to be a remarkably diverse ecosystem.
Flora: Quiver trees (Aloe dichotoma), with their sculptural branches, rise like natural candelabras from the granite. In spring, carpets of wildflowers briefly transform the desert, while scarlet aloes punctuate the horizon.
Fauna: Antelope species such as springbok, eland, and klipspringer are common, alongside giraffe and gemsbok. Birdlife flourishes, from Verreaux’s eagles soaring above the gorge to
STORIES ETCHED IN ROCK AND MEMORY
Augrabies has always been more than just stone water. For centuries, it has held deep significance for the indigenous !Ora people, whose name for the site captures the essence of its power. The !Ora, often historically recognised as the Korana, are part of the broader Khoekhoe community. Their descendants continue to be woven into the fabric of the Northern Cape. The stories of explorers and settlers also cling to these cliffs.
The Swedish explorer Hendrik Jakob Wikar is recognised as the first European to reach the falls, arriving in 1778 after years of wandering through the wilderness. Nearly 50 years later,
sociable weavers whose enormous nests weigh down acacia branches. Smaller creatures like rock hyraxes – often seen basking on the cliffs – remind visitors that survival here demands adaptation. Night skies: Free from light pollution, the park is one of South Africa’s top stargazing spots. The Milky Way arches overhead, constellations shine brightly, and the desert silence enhances the feeling of connection to the cosmos.
BEAUTY AND DANGER INTERTWINED
Augrabies inspires awe but requires respect. The falls have a tragic history of accidents. Since the park’s declaration, more than 20 people have lost their lives here – some swept over the falls, others tumbling into the gorge. Even livestock and
hippos have been swept over the edge as floods roared through the canyon.
Remarkably, stories of survival are rare. In 1979, a Scandinavian tourist fell into the gorge and managed to survive. The following year, a local man was swept over the cataract itself and survived to tell the tale – a story that has become part of park legend.
These incidents emphasise the raw power of the Orange River, serving as a reminder that it is no gentle attraction. Visitors today are carefully guided to boardwalks and viewing platforms designed to keep them at a safe distance, without diminishing the thrill of witnessing the river’s might.
EXPLORING THE PARK
For travellers, Augrabies provides both easy access and rugged adventure.
• Boardwalks and viewpoints: Wooden pathways lead to several vantage points, including Arrow Point and Oranjekom. Each provides a different perspective on the falls and gorge, especially striking at sunrise or sunset when the granite glows.
• Hiking trails: The Dassie Trail, a 5km loop, winds through granite outcrops, riverine woodland, and viewpoints over the gorge. For serious hikers, the Klipspringer Hiking Trail extends over three days and 39km, immersing adventurers in desert solitude and star-filled nights.
• Cycling and 4x4 routes: Mountain biking and off-road adventure tracks enhance the park’s appeal to active visitors, providing new ways to enjoy the striking beauty of the landscape.
• Stargazing and photography: With expansive skies and striking geology, Augrabies rewards night-time photographers and amateur astronomers alike.
PRACTICAL INFORMATION
BEST TIMES TO VISIT
• Summer (December–February): Expect extreme heat, sometimes reaching over 40°C. Nights, however, are perfect for stargazing.
• Autumn (March–April): Usually the ideal period to witness the falls at their peak, as summer rains upstream cause the Orange River to swell.
• Winter (May–August): Cooler days and crisp nights make hiking more comfortable, although water levels are lower.
• Spring (September–November): The desert awakens with flowering aloes and seasonal blooms, offering photographers and botanists a feast for the eyes.
A LIVING HERITAGE
Augrabies isn’t just about landscapes — it’s about stories. The weaving of Khoekhoe heritage, colonial encounters, and the relentless roar of the falls creates a place where human and natural histories collide. For the Korana and Griqua communities, the land continues to hold memories and significance.
For visitors, the experience is both visual and visceral: a confrontation with scale, noise, and silence. Standing on the viewing deck as the Orange River plunges into the gorge, you feel the same awe Wikar must have felt in 1778 — and the same profound respect the !Ora people still hold for this sacred place.
WHY GO
South Africa boasts many waterfalls, from the lush cascades of Mpumalanga to the towering drop of Tugela in KwaZulu-Natal. But Augrabies stands out.
Here, in the austerity of the Northern Cape, water feels more precious, more powerful, and more humbling. It is a place to contemplate time — geological, historical, and personal. The granite has endured for millions of years. The river maintains its endless flow. And for a few days, you can stand at the edge and feel the earth roar beneath your feet.
Location: The park is approximately 120km west of Upington in the Northern Cape.
Facilities: Accommodation includes chalets, bungalows, and campsites, along with a restaurant and swimming pool. Picnic areas are scattered throughout the park for day visitors.
Access: Roads are paved up to the main falls, with gravel tracks continuing further into the reserve. Travel tips: Combine your visit with wine tasting in the Orange River Valley, where vines flourish along the riverbanks.
Pack for all extremes: hot days, cold nights.
Take your time. The desert rewards those who stay awhile. IB
80 YEARS OF NATURE, PEOPLE, AND PURPOSE
BY THE CARTE COLLECTION
FOR OVER 80 YEARS, THE CARTE FAMILY HAS SHAPED HOSPITALITY IN THE NORTHERN DRAKENSBERG. TODAY, THE CARTE COLLECTION CARRIES ON THAT LEGACY WITH A RENEWED FOCUS ON CONSERVATION, RESPONSIBLE TOURISM, AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT.
From restoring indigenous grasslands and carefully removing invasive species to supporting early childhood education, the Collection exemplifies how thoughtful hospitality can generate lasting value for both local communities and the natural environment.
In an era when sustainable travel is becoming more important, the Collection’s approach shows that tourism can be both healing and responsible.
A cornerstone of the Collection’s community initiatives is the Royal Drakensberg Education Trust, especially the Khanyisela Project, which supports children in surrounding communities to reach their full potential through education.
Thobani Ndlovu, head of the Royal Drakensberg Primary School and project coordinator, reflects on the project’s impact: “The Carte Collection’s involvement gives children access to opportunities that might otherwise be beyond their reach. Beyond practical support, the project provides reassurance and encouragement, showing these young people that they are seen
and valued. That understanding transforms how they approach learning and fosters confidence that extends far beyond the classroom.”
Sustainability guides every aspect of their operations, with native flora protected through careful removal of invasive species, wildlife populations closely monitored, and renewable energy options like solar power thoughtfully incorporated across the properties.
Water is conserved, waste carefully managed, and the Collection constantly looks for ways to cut down on single-use plastics.
These efforts ensure that those within the Collection experience the Drakensberg in a state that remains close to its natural condition, reflecting a considered approach where the wellbeing of the land, its wildlife, and surrounding communities is given equal importance.
The Cavern Resort and Spa, the flagship property, combines comfort and elegance with attentiveness to its environment. Rooms and suites are refined, some with fireplaces and
private patios overlooking ancient fern forests.
Days involve exploring peaceful forest trails, enjoying spa treatments with Esse, a South African skincare brand, or simply taking in the clarity of the mountain air. Evenings are marked by shared meals beneath the stars, where nourishment, conversation, and reflection offer both physical and emotional renewal while fostering a deeper bond with the natural surroundings.
Montusi Mountain Lodge provides a more secluded retreat, featuring suites with sweeping views of the Amphitheatre escarpment, fireplaces, and private patios. Guests may discover hidden waterfalls, explore ancient San rock art, or traverse the hills on horseback, while every meal emphasises locally sourced ingredients. Montusi demonstrates that the remarkable beauty of the Drakensberg can be enjoyed without compromising environmental or cultural integrity.
Sungubala Eco Camp offers an off-grid, selfsufficient retreat where comfort and privacy sit alongside untamed nature. Guests hike through valleys, fish in mountain dams, or cycle across rugged terrain, returning each evening to the warmth of a campfire beneath the African sky. The camp’s design intentionally minimises environmental impact while providing an immersive and restorative experience.
Beyond the properties, the Northern Drakensberg Nature Way offers a four-day slackpacking trail across 6,500 hectares of protected grassland. Local guides accompany each stage, providing
insights into the ecology and history of the region, while luggage is transported and meals are freshly prepared from local produce. This approach enables travellers to engage fully with the land, experience physical challenge, and see how tourism, conservation, and community initiatives coexist harmoniously.
Megan Bedingham, a third-generation family member and manager of The Cavern, reflects on the ethos guiding the collection: “Hospitality here is about respect for the land, for the wildlife, and for the communities that call it home. Every step taken in these mountains and every meal shared reflects that care. Those staying leave having experienced the Drakensberg’s splendour, with an understanding of what it takes to protect it and the knowledge that their visit supports both the natural environment and the people who live here.”
Across all three properties, heritage, hospitality, and care for land and local communities are interconnected. Accommodation is regarded as comfortable and sensitive to its surroundings, while the Royal Drakensberg Education Trust ensures that children and families gain tangible benefits from tourism. Each stay leaves a positive mark, not only on the natural environment but also on the lives of those who live there.
In every interaction, whether on the trails, within the properties, or through community initiatives, the Collection shows that the most meaningful journeys are those that leave both people and place enriched, proving that tourism can truly be both restorative and responsible.

Leave behind items that are not permitted, such as irons, candles, and drones. Most everyday essentials, like hairdryers and bathrobes, are supplied in your cabin.

Check the daily cruise planner.
Your daily planner (delivered to your cabin or available on the MSC app) highlights scheduled activities, entertainment, and dining specials – don’t miss out on exclusive events!

Tanzania in HD –Safaris, Spice, and Snow-Capped Summits
BY BYRON LUKAS
IMAGINE LIONS IN TREES, FLAMINGOS PAINTING LAKES PINK, AND SUNSETS OVER ZANZIBAR’S SPICE-SCENTED SHORES. TANZANIA IS MORE THAN A HOLIDAY; IT’S A KALEIDOSCOPE OF EXPERIENCES.
With snow-capped mountains, plains teeming with big cats, and idyllic islands, Tanzania redefines the essence of a perfect escape. It’s that impossibly photogenic friend who never has a bad angle.
Serengeti sunrise? Check. Zanzibar’s soft powder beaches? Check. Kilimanjaro, standing tall like a deity from Olympus? Also check. And while most destinations force you to choose between
adventure and relaxation, Tanzania playfully offers both in stunning high definition.
PLAY: WILD, WILD TANZANIA
Let’s start with the obvious: safari. The Serengeti isn’t just another national park; it’s a stage where nature puts on the most exclusive show on Earth – The Great Migration. Imagine over a million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles moving in a river of hooves, drama, and dust. Lions hide, crocodiles sharpen their teeth, and the audience – you, camera in hand – gasps. It’s gritty, glamorous, and
just the right amount of gory.
Then there’s the Ngorongoro Crater, a veritable Eden in a vast volcanic bowl. Where else can you enjoy breakfast overlooking hippos and finish the day watching flamingos turn a lake pink? For an extra thrill, Lake Manyara is home to tree-climbing lions – big cats who clearly didn’t get the memo about staying on the ground.
But Tanzania isn’t just about safaris. Just off the coast lies Zanzibar, the Spice Island, where the focus shifts from jeep rides to barefoot beach walks, sunset dhow cruises, and getting lost in Stone Town’s winding alleys, where African, Indian, and Arabic cultures blend seamlessly.
fill the air with their aroma. A spice farm tour is a feast for the senses, with guides picking leaves and pods for you to crush and inhale.
Seafood, naturally, is the highlight. Fishermen still sail in dhows, and chefs turn the day’s catch into magic: grilled lobster with coconut rice, octopus curry with a hint of chilli,
And if you’re the brave sort, Mount Kilimanjaro awaits. The world’s tallest free-standing mountain is more than just a trek; it’s a rite of passage. You’ll curse, sweat, and question your life choices, but when the snowy summit greets you at sunrise, it feels as though Tanzania itself has kissed you good morning.
EAT: SPICE, SMOKE, AND SEAFOOD
Food in Tanzania doesn’t hold back – it entices. In Zanzibar, spices are the essence. Cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves aren’t just stored in jars; they
and warm chapati dripping with honey. On the mainland, the Swahili coast offers smoked beef skewers, spiced pilau rice, and nyama choma, East Africa’s answer to barbecue, best enjoyed with a cold beer. For the brave, roadside chipsi mayai (fries wrapped in an omelette) is the genius local hangover cure.
SLEEP: UNDER CANVAS OR UNDER STARS
Accommodation in Tanzania is all about atmosphere. Romance seekers head to Zanzibar’s barefoot-chic resorts, like The Palms or Baraza, where hammocks sway, ocean breezes whisper,
FACTS ABOUT TANZANIA
Currency: Tanzanian Shilling (though US dollars are widely accepted – just don’t expect anyone to take your R50 note).
Language: Swahili is king, but English is the faithful sidekick. Practice saying Hakuna Matata and watch stranger’s smile.
Best Time to Visit: June to October for safari, December to February for Kilimanjaro, and anytime you’re craving beaches.
Vibe: Polished chaos. Island time meets safari urgency.
and butlers anticipate your cocktail order before you’ve spoken.
For adventurers, safari lodges and tented camps in the Serengeti and Tarangire raise glamping to new heights. Imagine claw-foot tubs overlooking watering holes, lantern-lit dinners beneath baobabs, and coffee served with a casual “good morning, lions were roaring last night.”
And for soul seekers, Kilimanjaro provides huts and tents. Comfort is basic, but when you unzip your tent at dawn to see Africa stretching endlessly below, sleep seems meaningless.
LET’S GET REAL
Tanzania isn’t Switzerland – it’s messy, vibrant, unpredictable, and unforgettable. It’s the kind of place that laughs at your plans and rewards you with stories instead.
Tanzania has its quirks. Roads can be chaotic. Time is wonderfully flexible (the bus leaves when it leaves). And yes, that beach vendor will certainly try to sell you a wooden giraffe for the price of a small car. But that’s part of the charm.
So, should you pack your bags? Absolutely. Pack light, leave space for spice packets, a carved dhow or two, and a few stories best whispered over cocktails back home. Buckle up. Your journey awaits. IB
Namibia Africa’s Hidden Desert Gem
BY BYRON LUKAS
DISCOVER THE CAPTIVATING BEAUTY OF NAMIBIA, WHERE DESERTS MEET THE OCEAN, AND ADVENTURE AWAITS AT EVERY CORNER. FROM LUXURY LODGES TO STARLIT CAMPSITES, THIS GUIDE SHOWCASES THE BEST PLACES TO STAY, DINE, AND ENJOY IN AFRICA’S DESERT PARADISE.
Set on the southwest edge of Africa, Namibia is where emptiness becomes an art form.
It’s a country where deserts meet the ocean, where you can drive for hours without seeing another soul (but encounter plenty of springbok giving you judgy side-eye), and where you’ll find yourself whispering “wow” so often you’ll think it’s become your new mother tongue.
So, pack that spirit of adventure, a good hat, sunscreen and your coolest pair of sunglasses. Namibia awaits.
SLEEP
Let’s be honest, half the excitement of Namibia is choosing where to lay your head. This isn’t your typical one-drink-and-call-it-a-night spot.
Here, your hotel could be a luxury lodge with infinity pools that blend into the desert, or it might be a tent with the Milky Way spilling diamonds overhead.
Sossusvlei Lodge: The ultimate dream for desert enthusiasts. Picture enjoying sundowners with a view of the world’s tallest dunes. The kind of place where you’ll wake up and wonder if you’ve stepped into a Vogue photo shoot.
Onguma The Fort, Etosha: If Namibia is the queen of understated glamour, Onguma is her palace. This luxury lodge is perched right on the edge of Etosha National Park, offering front-row views of lions, elephants, and that one giraffe who always appears as if he’s late for a party.
Shipwreck Lodge, Skeleton Coast: Yes, it resembles a shipwreck (by design). Yes, it’s in the middle of nowhere. And yes, you’ll want to boast about it forever. Rugged, windswept, and utterly stunning – like dating someone who surfs at dawn and quotes Rumi at breakfast.
If you’re on a tighter budget, Namibia also offers
a wealth of campsites and guesthouses. And honestly? Sleeping under the stars here is a fivebillion-star experience that no hotel rating system can match.
EAT
Namibia’s culinary scene is surprising and memorable. It’s not Paris, but that’s unnecessary. Here, food is hearty, bold, and often infused with a sense of history.
Game meats: Prepare to indulge your carnivore instincts. Kudu steaks, springbok carpaccio, and oryx fillets are local favourites. Before feeling guilty, remember: these animals are as free-range as it gets.
Kapana in Katutura – This is authentic. Visit the township markets in Windhoek, where vendors grill meat over open fires, add spices, and serve it wrapped in newspaper. It’s messy, smoky, and Namibia offering you a love bite you’ll never forget.
Coastal treats: Swakopmund and Walvis Bay serve the best seafood – think oysters that rival those in France and calamari so fresh it probably swam by that morning to say hello. Pair it with a crisp Namibian beer, and suddenly you find yourself composing poetry to your plate.
For the discerning crowd, there are fine-dining establishments in Windhoek and Swakopmund that specialise in transforming game meat into culinary masterpieces.
PLAY
This is where Namibia becomes a true seductress. Forget lounging by the pool all day (though, you can certainly do that too).
Sossusvlei and Deadvlei: Picture yourself standing in a cracked white clay pan, surrounded by 300-metre-high red dunes, with blackened, dead camelthorn trees striking dramatic poses. It’s surreal, cinematic, and hotter than your ex. Climb “Big Daddy” dune at sunrise for a leg workout that doubles as therapy.
“SUNSCREEN IS NONNEGOTIABLE. YOUR SKIN DESERVES A LITTLE RESPECT.”
Etosha National Park: A safari with flair. Etosha’s salt pan stretches endlessly, drawing animals as if hosting the wildest cocktail party in Africa. Lions lounge in the shade, elephants parade across the plains, and at night, floodlit waterholes become stages for animal drama.
Skeleton Coast: Wild, windswept, and slightly terrifying. Shipwrecks rust along the shore, seals bark like drunken rugby fans, and the Atlantic pounds the sand as if it’s in a foul mood. It’s hauntingly beautiful – like dating a poet with commitment issues.
Swakopmund: Namibia’s adventure capital. Sandboard down dunes like a desert daredevil, quad bike into nowhere, or strap yourself to a parachute and fall gracefully from the sky. Afterwards, enjoy a German beer (thanks to colonial history) and toast to your survival.
Stargazing in the Namib Desert: The Milky Way here is no gentle twinkle; it’s a burst of light that makes you feel gloriously insignificant. This is pillow talk with the universe.
THE TRUTH AND THE TEASE
Namibia isn’t a place you “do”. It’s a place you
surrender to. Yes, it’s hot. Yes, the distances are long. And yes, sometimes you’ll wonder if your rental car has trust issues. But here’s the thing: Namibia rewards patience with beauty so raw it almost feels indecent.
This is Africa stripped down to her essentials –sand, sky, stars, and silence. It’s a destination that makes you laugh at your own need for Wi-Fi, tempts you with sunsets so seductive you’ll blush, and leaves you with stories you’ll retell for years, preferably over a glass of South African wine.
QUICK TIPS FOR THE FLIRTATIOUS TRAVELLER
When to go: May to October is the dry season –perfect for safaris and staying cool in your flipflops. December to March might bring rain, but also dramatic skies and lush, greener landscapes.
Getting around: Namibia is best explored by road. Just make sure you’ve got a 4x4 and a good playlist. Distances are long, but the journey is half the fun.
What to pack: Sunscreen, a hat, layers (it gets cold at night), and an open mind. And perhaps a notebook – you’ll want to write love letters to the desert.
So, go on. Answer the siren’s call. Sleep beneath her stars, taste her wild game, lose yourself in her dunes, and let her remind you what it feels like to be completely, deliciously alive. IB

THE CHEF OF the sea lands AT THE NELLIE
BY MILOU STAUB
WHERE THE ATLANTIC AND INDIAN OCEANS MEET, A NEW CULINARY ADVENTURE STARTS AT THE ICONIC MOUNT NELSON, A BELMOND HOTEL, CAPE TOWN.
Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, Cape Town, is poised to unveil Amura in December 2025, a marine-inspired dining experience by Spanish Michelin-starred Chef Ángel León, the celebrated ‘Chef of the Sea’. This will be his first restaurant outside Spain and his debut in Africa.
WHAT IS THE CONCEPT BEHIND AMURA?
Amura offers an immersive dining experience inspired by the rhythms of the ocean and the richness of the Cape coastline. Drawing from the mysterious beauty and biodiversity of the sea, it provides guests with a sensory journey through the vision of Chef Ángel León, widely known as the “Chef of the Sea”.
HOW EXACTLY DOES THIS PARTNERSHIP ALIGN WITH MOUNT NELSON’S VALUES?
Both Mount Nelson and Amura share a vision rooted in heritage, nature, and purpose. The collaboration honours the ocean while celebrating hospitality with soul, marine conservation, and responsible sourcing, guided by Belmond’s commitment to storytelling and local connection.
WHAT IS MEANT BY THE ‘MARITIME BRIDGE’ BETWEEN SPAIN AND SOUTH AFRICA?
Historically, Cádiz has been a gateway to the East, while the Cape of Good Hope was a vital stop for ships rounding Africa. Amura celebrates this shared seafaring heritage, evident in culinary traditions such as fermented fish, spice-infused broths, and fire cooking – honouring the strong links between Andalusia and Africa.
WHO IS CHEF ÁNGEL LEÓN?
Chef Ángel León is a renowned Spanish chef whose flagship restaurant, Aponiente, has three Michelin stars, while Alevante holds two. Celebrated for reinventing marine cuisine with innovative use of sea-sourced ingredients like plankton and sea rice, he is also recognised with the Michelin Green Star for responsible gastronomy. His philosophy advocates community, sustainability, and respect for the sea.
WHY THE NAME ‘AMURA’?
Amura means ‘’bow of the boat’’ in Spanish, symbolising moving forward. The name also honours León’s father, who passed on his love of fishing and the ocean. It reflects a legacy of discovery, devotion, and an enduring bond with the sea.
HOW WILL THE MENU REFLECT BOTH SPAIN AND SOUTH AFRICA?
The menu honours shared seafaring traditions –salted fish, coastal fermentations, spice routes, and preservation methods. While Mediterranean in style, it is rooted in South African ingredients and Cape heritage. Guests can expect seasonal produce, indigenous spices, and overlooked local treasures such as halophyte plants, plankton, and by-catch fish, presented with avant-garde techniques like open-fire cooking.
WHAT TYPES OF DINING OPTIONS WILL BE AVAILABLE?
Guests can select either an à la carte menu or a tasting menu. Both highlight species and flavours from the Atlantic and Indian Oceans surrounding Cape Town, conveyed through Chef León’s poetic, science-informed approach to cuisine.
WHAT ROLE DO LOCAL PRODUCERS PLAY IN AMURA?
Amura collaborates with local Cape producers and sources directly from the surrounding seas. Like Andalusia, Cape Town’s coastline features overlooked species that can be elevated to haute cuisine, discovering beauty in the unexpected.
WHO IS DESIGNING THE RESTAURANT INTERIOR?
Award-winning South African interior architect Tristan du Plessis has crafted Amura’s interior. Inspired by the Cape’s kelp forests, the space feels moody, cinematic, and immersive. Deep greens, warm timber, and bronze accents mirror the ocean floor’s ambience, with a central open-plan kitchen acting as a theatrical stage.
HOW DOES AMURA REFLECT SUSTAINABILITY AND CONSERVATION?
Sustainability is central to Amura’s philosophy. From responsible sourcing and marine conservation to botanicals from Mount Nelson’s own gardens and a curated wine cellar featuring Cape terroirs alongside Andalusian sherries, every detail emphasises integrity and purpose.
WHO IS THE RESTAURANT DESIGNED FOR?
Amura is designed for discerning travellers and local epicureans – those who seek meaning in their meals and connection with their surroundings. It invites guests to explore, celebrate, and reconsider their relationship with the ocean.
WHEN WILL AMURA OFFICIALLY OPEN, AND HOW CAN RESERVATIONS BE MADE?
Amura by Ángel León will open in December 2025 at Mount Nelson, A Belmond Hotel, Cape Town. Reservations can be made by joining the waiting list via the email address restaurantreservations. mnh@belmond.com. IB

A perfectly cooked T-bone steak brings a sense of occasion to any meal. I’ll never forget dining at one of New York’s oldest steakhouses, Peter Luger, where a fellow chef and I shared a phenomenal 1kg T-bone. No sauce was needed – just pure, honest flavour. At the table, the waiter finished it with a generous spoonful of its own rendered fat. It was unforgettable. When you braai a T-bone, choose the very best cut you can find. Let the meat speak for itself. I sometimes add a light touch of barbecue sauce, but more often, I turn to a well-made flavoured butter. It melts into the steak, enhancing without overwhelming.

Magically Slim, Powerfully Smart iPhone 17
BY BYRON LUKAS
APPLE HAS DONE IT AGAIN, REDEFINING WHAT A SMARTPHONE CAN LOOK AND FEEL LIKE. THE NEW IPHONE 17 RANGE ISN’T JUST AN INCREMENTAL UPDATE; IT’S A STATEMENT. WITH FOUR VERSIONS (IPHONE 17, PRO, PRO MAX, AND THE ULTRA-SLIM IPHONE 17 AIR) THIS RELEASE COMBINES CUTTING-EDGE PERFORMANCE WITH A DESIGN SO SLEEK IT BORDERS ON FUTURISTIC.
At just 5.5 mm thick, the iPhone 17 Air is Apple’s slimmest device ever. It feels stunning in the hand, drawing attention with its impossibly slender profile. However, beauty often comes with compromises, and early reports suggest its reduced frame might limit battery capacity. The other models have slightly thicker bodies, balancing style with practicality.
PERFORMANCE THAT DELIVERS
Under the hood, the entire range operates on Apple’s new A19 chip. The Pro and Pro Max models, however, upgrade to the more powerful A19 Pro, supported by 12 GB of RAM.
The base and Air models come with 8 GB, which still marks a significant increase over earlier generations. Every model now features a silky 120 Hz ProMotion OLED display – finally delivering Apple’s smoothest visuals to all users, not just Pro customers.
PHOTOGRAPHY REDEFINED
If cameras matter most to you, the iPhone 17 won’t let you down. The base and Air models include a 48 MP main camera and a 24 MP selfie
lens – ideal for casual creators. However, the Pro series takes centre stage with a triple 48 MP setup: telephoto, wide, and ultra-wide lenses. Paired with Apple’s AI-enhanced image processing, these offer sharper details, richer colours, and low-light performance that can compete with dedicated cameras.
BATTERY AND BEYOND
The slender Air might come with a sub-3 000mAh battery, but Apple isn’t leaving users stranded. iOS 26 introduces adaptive power-saving features, alongside rumours of silicon-carbon battery technology designed to enhance efficiency. The outcome? More screen time, less plugging in.
THE VERDICT
The iPhone 17 series feels like Apple’s balancing act between art and engineering. The Air is the runway model – stunning, incredibly slim, and perfect for those who prioritise style above all else. Meanwhile, the Pro and Pro Max are the true powerhouses, packed with the muscle, memory, and camera setup to satisfy professionals and creators alike. Whatever you choose, one thing’s clear: Apple remains at the forefront of smartphone innovation. IB
WHEN IT COMES TO OUR FURRY FRIENDS, WE’D DO ALMOST ANYTHING TO KEEP THEM HAPPY AND HEALTHY. BUT VET BILLS CAN BE DAUNTING. THAT’S WHERE PET INSURANCE COMES IN, OFFERING PEACE OF MIND WHEN YOUR PET NEEDS CARE MOST. SO, IS IT TRULY WORTH IT?
BY CHARIS TORRANCE
Pet insurance can serve as a financial buffer, says Dr Carra Walters, veterinarian and owner of the 24hour Hillcrest Veterinary Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal. “It allows owners to proceed with diagnostics and treatments without immediate financial constraints, especially in emergencies or when managing chronic conditions.” That means you can say “yes” to surgery or specialist care without checking your bank balance first.
In fact, studies in the UK and US show insured pet owners are more likely to support advanced procedures. Regular premiums also assist with budgeting, reducing the heartbreaking decision of euthanasia for financial reasons (known as EEDR).
THE NOT-SO-GREAT BITS
There are some important caveats. “Owners usually need to pay upfront and then wait for reimbursement, which can still be a barrier,” Dr Walters explains.
And insurance won’t cover everything, especially if your pet has a pre-existing condition or if your breed is prone to issues that are excluded. “Occasional disputes over what is ‘necessary’ or ‘covered’ can lead to frustration,” she adds, particularly with caps, sub-limits, and fine print that trip up many owners.
WHEN INSURANCE SHINES
Dr Walters explains that insurance can be a lifesaver for major trauma (such as car accidents
or dog fights), chronic illnesses like diabetes, or expensive orthopaedic surgeries. It also helps owners pay for imaging, specialist referrals, and cancer treatments. “However, it’s less helpful for dental disease, elective procedures, or routine care like vaccinations – these are often excluded or barely covered,” she adds.
TIPS FOR CHOOSING
Dr Walters advises considering your pet’s breed, age, and lifestyle. “Highly active dogs or outdoor cats face a higher accident risk. And purebreds with known health issues are often better off insured.”
And read the fine print, watch for exclusions, and know that missing a payment could cost you coverage. Dr Walters adds that a pet emergency fund is an option, but as she warns, “this is rarely as effective for early, highcost incidents.”
In the end, it’s all about being ready for the cuddles, the chaos, and those surprise vet visits. IB
