Dear Readers,

f you are fascinated by other people’s gardens like I am and enjoy having the chance to have a nose - I mean inspect their handywork then page 22 is for you! Over 20 gardens in the Cranborne area including the main garden at Cranborne Manor are open on June 19th/20th. We are regular visitors to the Cranborne Manor Garden Centre Tea Room which is situated inside the old walled garden but it will be an additional treat to have a look at the garden properly too. Strangely Fathers’ Day just happens to fall on June 19th too, so you have the perfect gift for all those dads keen on gardening! Just like my husband, whose services were ‘volunteered’ to get our daughter started on an allotment during a late May week-

with best wishes,

end! Despite his previous experience of digging soggy, wet, heavy, clay soil full of couch grass and weeds from his past - this was surprisingly civilised and between them they managed to dig over and plant 5 rows of vegetables in an afternoon! We also have a selection of books for dads on page 8 if your dad just prefers to relax in the garden. And an article on page 26 is all about outdoor living so he can relax in comfort too! There are loads of other relaxing hobbies to be found in our Clubs and Societies listed on pages 20 and 21. So when you need a job done or want to treat yourself or dad of course at this time of year, look in here first or use our ‘Local Business Directory’ on page 50!

ROUNDABOUT

ROUNDABOUT VERWOOD RINGWOOD & FORDINGBRIDGE

PAST and PRESENT Mace ‘Super-Fayre’, Ringwood Road, Verwood.

Early 1980’s

M

ace was one of Verwood’s supermarkets before 1982 and as with many local shops, utilized the downstairs room of a house. There was no such thing as late night shopping in those days. You bought what you needed before 5.30p.m. and definitely nothing on Sundays! Originally called “Twitchens”, it was a grocery store on the south-western corner of Ringwood and Vicarage Roads adjoined by the Lloyds Bank. The name became synonymous with this corner and “Meet you at Twitchens” is still used by some of the older folk. The shop was

later owned by Oliver Hill, then Pollards followed by Doughtys. It became Mace ‘Super-Fayre’ run for many years by Mr and Mrs Everson and then the Geiger family before the opening of Safeway supermarket on 24th August 1982. This changed Verwood’s shopping habits for ever, leading to the demise of Mace and other useful retail outlets. Shoppers from the early 1980’s would be amazed at the new recently built Morrisons which replaced Safeway and now includes a cafe, toilets, fresh food counters and even a petrol station amongst its range of facilities! Books for Dad Struggling for inspiration this Father’s Day? Forget gift vouchers and gardening tools, books are the way to go. Whether Dad likes escaping into a thriller, getting creative with the kids, or cooking up a storm in the kitchen, there’s sure to be something in our selection to keep him happy. Conspiracy – Iain Gale Bernard Cornwell fans will thank you for introducing them to Iain Gale’s series about a maverick soldier in the Peninsular War. James Keane certainly gets himself in enough scrapes and mishaps to keep the reader entertained. Wellresearched, gritty and colourful, the series brings a period of military history to life. The latest novel, Conspiracy, sees Keane ordered by Wellington to work undercover in Paris – a dangerous task indeed in such a turbulent political landscape. 50 Evening Adventures – Tim, Kerry, Ella and Amy Meek Another great resource for tackling the ‘I’m bored’ mantra, 50 Evening Adventures provides a plethora of ideas for making the most of evenings as a family. There are suggestions for places to go, things to do and meals to cook outside. Former teachers Tim and Kerry Meek are currently travelling around Europe in a caravan with their daughters. They’re used to packing lightly, so most of the suggestions don’t need any special equipment, and can

be carried out for free, or very cheaply. The Hairy Bikers Blood, Sweat and Tyres: The Autobiography – Dave Myers and Si King If Dad enjoys an autobiography, this is the perfect book to wrap up for him this Father’s Day. The duo didn’t have the easiest childhoods; Si was bullied about his weight, while Dave had to grow up quickly as a carer for his mother. But a love of good food and entertaining brought them together and made them household names. Warm, honest and laugh-out -loud funny, it’s a great testament to what true friends can do when they put their minds to it. Poor Boy Road – James L. Weaver Fast-paced and gripping from the first page, Poor Boy Road is a good bet for fans of action thrillers. Jake Caldwell is a mob-enforcer who’s looking for a way out. When he’s called back to his childhood town to help care for his dying, abusive father, his boss hands him one last job – kill a local drug dealer. But can he do it? Great characters, believable dialogue and plenty of action combine to make this a real page-turner. The Den Book – Fiona Danks and Jo Schofield Packed with creative inspiration, The Den Book is full of ideas to encourage Dad to get outside and have fun with the kids (or

grandkids). Whether they want a forest hideaway, a fairy tent or a full-on fort, instructions are easy to follow, and many of the dens don’t require any special materials. Published by Frances Lincoln, it costs £12.99, so you should have enough funds left over to invest in some tarpaulin and twine. More Home Comforts – James Martin Aspiring chefs and good honest cooks alike will enjoy this book. As the name implies, it’s packed with ideas for tasty, honest comfort food. Recipes are straightforward, with each step well explained. Most ingredients can be easily picked up at the supermarket, although a few will require a bit more forward planning. More than 100 recipes are included, many of which have been shown in the TV series. Dad will soon be whipping you up Beer Can Piri Piri Chicken, Lamb Belly with BBQ Sauce & Pickled Red Onion, or just some good old chocolate brownies.

W

e are in the middle of summer and Blashford Lakes are full of life, with the insect world buzzing, the leaves on the trees still fresh and young birds fledging left, right and centre. On Ivy Lake the tern chicks will be taking their first leap away from the comfort of their nest whilst the great crested grebe chicks with their black and white humbug faces will be becoming more independent as they are now too big to catch a ride on their parent’s back. On the shoreline of Ibsley Water oystercatcher, lapwing and little ringed plover chicks will be taking their next steps and venturing further from their parents. The air will still be full of birdsong with many continuing to sing throughout June as their mates produce a second brood. Blashford’s insect life is best viewed on a sunny day, and the meadow is a brilliant place to just sit and be still. Our volunteers carry out a butterfly

transect, walking along a route every week during the summer season to monitor our butterfly populations. Species to look out for include red admiral, peacock, comma, ringlet, marbled white and speckled wood, amongst others. If you want to take a closer look at the insect world, then why not join reserve staff for a high summer insect hunt for beetles, butterflies and bugs on Sunday 19th June or education staff on Saturday 2nd July for a family ‘Catch the Bug!’ event in search of crazy crickets, dazzling damselflies and great grasshoppers! Please telephone to book your place. The mixture of wetland, woodland and grassland makes the reserve a brilliant place for dragonflies and damselflies, with brown hawker, common darter, emperor and black tailed skimmer dragonflies all on the wing along with common blue and azure blue damselflies. Their life cycle requires wetlands for the start of their life along with open wood-

land and grassland in which to hunt as an adult. We are often asked how to tell dragonflies and damselflies apart: the best way is to wait until they are sitting still or perched on vegetation, as damselflies tend to hold their wings over their bodies whilst dragonflies will rest with them stretched out to the side. On the ground, grass snakes are likely to be basking on the alder logs and stumps outside Ivy South Hide. The habitat here is perfect for them as they feed primarily on fish and amphibians. The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. The reserve is managed by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, a charity that aims to protect local wildlife and inspire people. For information on upcoming events visit our website: www. hiwwt.org.uk or phone: 01425 472760. For up-to-date wildlife information visit our blog: blashfordlakes.wordpress.com.

Viewed From My W indow A small selection of short stories written by Patricia Oliver from Horton near Wimborne, describing the ups and downs of caring for feral cats over the years with photos by J Santana-Martin.

T

Sooty (part1)

he ‘spy-cam’ has proved time and again to be very useful in determining who is coming to dinner in the barn. We already have a black cat we call Blackie, but when she goes into the barn for food, she is always accompanied by Jason, so who was this other black cat who came on its own? Later we would see an occasional glimpse of him at the back door eating from the food bowls left out there for the cats. We called him ‘Sooty’. Looking at the size of him I would estimate him to be about one year old. He was very timid and would run away if he saw us. I set up a trap at the ‘hole-in-wall’ entrance the cats use to come and go to the barn, but try as I might, both times he spotted the danger and ran away. I decided to wait a while before trying again and see if I can improve my technique. Later we saw he had made friends with Blackie and Jason and the three of them would eat together in the large heated greenhouse. Sooty spends a lot of time sitting in a very large pot that houses an olive tree, but always comes hurriedly for food at mealtimes. We just have to call “Come on then, Come on then!” and he is sure to appear along with any other cat within hearing distance. I was soon able to give him a stroke and occasionally a tummy rub and he has even started to purr, which is progress indeed, but I was not as yet able to pick him up. The security camera shows he also comes for food in the barn almost every hour over night, just to check if this food is any different to the offerings before him in the greenhouse, and we cannot help but notice that he has doubled his weight and is now so fat he seems to wobble along. He is certainly making the most of all the biscuits and other food put out for

everyone and it does not look as if he is going anywhere. It was a few months later when I next had the opportunity to catch Sooty. We had been noticing that his coat seemed a bit tatty as if he had a flea allergy and it would appear that he had lost a lot of weight. We definitely needed to catch him and take him to the Vet to see what the problem was and to get him neutered. I was in the barn getting the food ready to put down for the cats when Sooty came in and begged for food. This was easily sorted. I placed a bowl of food down and whilst he was occupied, I closed the door to the barn and to the entrance to the hole in the wall. I had him in the barn at last. Now I had a chance of catching him. Then I noticed a black cat in the car park and thought that Sooty had made his escape. I was quite concerned and could not think how he would have got out of the barn. I nearly removed the catching cage thinking I was too late, but decided to leave it in place. It took all of two days with Sooty hiding in the barn before he tried to make his escape through the hole in the wall and straight into the catching cage. I had him. The full story and many more are in the book “Viewed From My Window” by Patricia Oliver price £15.00 + £2.50 p&p. For more details, contact Patricia on 01202 826244. Any proceeds go towards the Veterinary and Welfare needs of the 16 feral cats currently in her care.

208 GTi P-Sport

208 GT-Line

Mike's Motors

By Mike Wattam

A Tale of Twin Tests.

P

eugeot very kindly gave me two of their very popular 208 medium hatchback series to test, back-to-back. At first sight they could have been twins, except they had two distinctly different personalities. The first was a technically interesting car, the smart and chic 208 Puretech GT-Line with 1.2 litre petrol automatic power. The second was the almost mindlessly fast and very extrovert 208GTi by Peugeot Sport. My instant feeling was ‘the Tortoise and the Hare’. But was this justified in practice? Let’s remind ourselves about the Peugeot 208. It’s now a common sight on our roads, known for its commodious passenger and luggage space, and most of all for superb economy and emissions from a wide range of cutting-edge petrol and diesel engines. Late in 2015 the 208 received a refresh in which the high trim and specification level of the GTi was made available to selected other models as the “GT-Line”, adding much of the GTi exterior badging and grille, plus a slightly firmer suspension giving the car a more sporty and confident feel on the road 208 GT-Line Cockpit

without particularly losing that superb Peugeot ride quality. The GTi version gained extra equipment - and in the case of the new Peugeot Sport variant a lower, much harder ride with enormous wheels, bigger brakes and glue-like tyres. First the Puretech. Here was a car with a very small 3 cylinder petrol turbo engine married to an automatic gearbox – maybe a recipe for the most sluggish car in the West? Inside and out very nicely trimmed with the GTLine sporty image including a lot of leather, lovely sports seats and a lot of electronic aids. All premium car stuff, very nice. However, fire it up and the engine note is muted yet purposeful, with enough power aided by the auto ‘box to give excellent performance for motorways. Interestingly, fuel consumption stays just over 40mpg whatever task you throw at it and with a light touch, 50 is feasible. What is most impressive is the comfort, the ease of driving in all road conditions and especially in urban traffic jams where it also excelled. The standard cruise control, DAB radio and Bluetooth help make light of our hideous motorway system. I really liked this car for its sophisticated good looks, excellent specification and what it could do on the road. In my view, a car capable of serving all family needs.

Now to the 208 GTi by Peugeot Sport. Immediately striking with a matt black paint finish except for the rear quarter which was finished in bright red gloss. Inside, looking great with lots of equipment and extra-large Recaro-style seats bearing the Peugeot Sport logo. Fire it up, and a deep fruity exhaust burbles away in the background. Drive away and there is an impression of immediacy and tautness in everything,

208 GTi P-Sport front that super-hard suspension enables you to feel every undulation on the average British road, while despite a sophisticated Torsen diff a lot of correction is required to keep it on the straight and narrow. My test-piece of flat tarmac however revealed huge levels of grip and massive cornering speeds without needing to fight the steering. However, my overall impression is that this car is made for the race track - and is too much hard work on normal roads. The colour scheme seemed to attract every teenage cowboy driver to ‘have a go’ and while I found it most interesting and challenging to drive, it just doesn’t have any place in my garage.

The Gardens of Cranborne Open Weekend

Cranborne Manor Quick facts: More than 20 gardens open Place: Cranborne, Dorset Dates: June 18th & 19th 2016 Time: 11am – 5pm Price: £8 adults; children free; no dogs please

T

he beautiful and varied Gardens of Cranborne in Dorset will be open for visitors on the weekend of June 18th and 19th. From the famous Cranborne Manor gardens, originally designed by John Tradescant in the 17th century, and the wonderful 18th century Number 10 Castle Street (formerly Cranborne Lodge) through elegant period and modern homes to much-loved cottage gardens, there is something for everyone in this delightful and historic Dorset village. Highlights of the many gardens opening include: Cranborne Manor Gardens: designed by John Tradescant in the early 17th century, the structure follows a pattern of ‘rooms’, delineated by hedges or walls and softened by billowing herbaceous borders. Number 10 Castle Street: this imposing 18th century country house boasts a magnificent formal garden with a series of grass terraces rising gently from the house. Borders are planted with shrubs, old roses and herbaceous plants. Red Lion House: a delightful private garden which is chemical-free and uses the principles of bio-dynamic horticulture. The herbaceous borders, rose, herb and vegetable gardens

are designed to reflect the local environment. There are also a number of modern sculptures. Manor View House: this wonderful lateGeorgian house boasts a beautiful walled garden, with a mass of repeat planting surrounding variegated standard hollies; deep borders are planted with a mixture of shrubs, perennials and roses. The Old Vicarage: a mature garden with views to the church and Cranborne Manor. A natural swimming pond provides a habitat for wild life. Bank House: a typical Edwardian small walled garden with a vine, herbaceous plantings, roses, shrubs and climbing plants. Chase Cottage: featuring a huge mulberry tree, colourful mixed borders and a delightful garden studio displaying textile works. Cranborne Allotments: tilled since the early part of the 19th century, these 24 plots are a wonderful example of local endeavour, perched with views over the rooftops, church spire and rolling fields. The gardens will be open from 11am to 5pm on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th June (Number 10 Castle Street open Sunday only). Entry is £8 for adults; children free. There will be an exhibition of art by local artists as well as a wide range of stalls and activities in the village during the weekend, including maypole dancing. Refreshments will be available including ploughman’s lunches and teas in the village hall. The event is being held in aid of church funds.

Health

World Blood Donor Day June 14th By Alison Runham

W

orld Blood Donor Day on 14th June is an annual World Health Organisation event. This year’s campaign celebrates blood donors, highlighting the idea that blood connects us all. It seeks to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donation, inspiring more people to become blood donors.

Why Should You Give Blood? It’s easy to find reasons not to donate, but also easy to assume blood will be available if we need it. However, in the UK we need over 6,000 people to give blood every day to meet our needs; around 67% is used to treat medical conditions, 27% in surgery (including emergencies) and 6% to treat blood loss after childbirth. Who Can Give Blood? If you’re fit, healthy, aged 16 to 66 and weigh over 7 stone 12lbs or 50kg, you should be able to start donating blood.

Men can give blood every 3 months and women, every 4 months. However, some things can affect your eligibility, such as organ transplantation, travel to certain countries and existing medical conditions. You can check your eligibility on the NHS webpage www.blood. co.uk/who-can-give-blood. Preparing To Give Blood You can register online at www.blood.co.uk, by calling 0300 123 2323, or at a blood donation session. To donate, book an appointment or drop in at your next local session. To make your donation as comfortable as possible, ensure that beforehand you: • Eat regularly. • Get a good night’s sleep. • Drink plenty of fluids (but avoid alcohol for 24 hours). • Wear loose, comfortable clothing. • Avoid unusually strenuous exercise. • Know your medical and travel history.

What Happens When You Donate Blood? Pre-booked appointments shouldn’t take over an hour; take a friend or book to distract you if you’re nervous. You’ll be given a drink to keep you hydrated. Your identity and health check details will be confirmed, and your iron levels will be checked by testing blood from your finger. A small cuff is placed on your arm to maintain a light pressure and the donation site will be cleaned with antiseptic before the needle, connected to a blood bag with your unique donor number, is inserted. A special scale constantly measures your donated blood until the 470ml mark is reached, which usually takes 5-10 minutes. You shouldn’t feel any pain. Once the needle is removed, a sterile dressing is applied to your arm. After Your Donation You should keep the pressure roll on for 30 minutes and the dressing on for 6 hours. You’ll be sent to the refreshment area to relax and encouraged to have a snack and at least 2 drinks before you leave. You should avoid having a hot bath and using your donation arm for anything strenuous for the rest of the day. Most people feel fine, but if you feel dizzy, sick, hot or shaky, drink plenty of fluid and lie down until you feel better. If bleeding recurs, sit down, raise your arm and press on the area until it stops. If you become unwell (other than a cold or cold sore) within 2 weeks, or believe there’s a reason your blood shouldn’t be used, you should call 0300 123 2323. Become a Lifesaver! Think of saving a life and you probably imagine rescuing someone from an accident or a fire. But by becoming a blood donor, you could save a life every time you donate. So why not register today?

Home & Interiors Outdoor Living By Katherine Sorrell

save money with woodchips in the children’s play area. Verticals are just as important, providing privacy, screening and dividing, adding visual interest and offering places for climbers to grow. Think about fences, hedges, walls, arches, arbours and pergolas – a simple metal archway over a path entwined with fragrant honeysuckle makes a lovely focal point, while a small wooden pergola can link two different areas of the garden and offer a shady spot to sit in.

L

onger days mean it’s time to head out to the garden. However large or small your outside space, some careful planning will ensure that it is flexible enough for playing games, entertaining or simply putting your feet up and relaxing, Today’s gardens are more like an outdoor room, used for playing, cooking, socialising and resting; they are multifunctional spaces that look good but also work hard for every member of the family. If your garden is in need of an update, the secret is in the planning - how will you use the space and what do you want from it? Sketch a plan of your garden on graph paper, and gather samples of the materials you intend to use – such as slate, willow or terracotta – to ensure that they co-ordinate. If in doubt, consider consulting a professional, who will undoubtedly come up with practical solutions and inspirational ideas you would never have thought of.

In a large garden, the ideal layout includes separate areas for dining, relaxing and playing – perhaps with a ‘secret’ children’s area at the far end, including structures such as a swing, trampoline, climbing frame or tepee. A peaceful area away from both the house and the kids is ideal for a hammock or a deck chair – perhaps near some scented flowers or under a tree for shade. And the dining area is best closest to the house, with space nearby for a barbecue or even an outdoor kitchen. Consider changes in levels – they add interest and are easier to deal with than slopes, but avoid lots of steps between the door and the dining table. Flooring is key, too - will you choose stone slabs, gravel, bricks, decking, wood chips or perhaps tiles that complement your kitchen flooring for an inside-outside look? Just like indoors, your choice of garden flooring can signal a change from one area to another. It is also a question of practicality and cost: specify stone slabs for the dining area, for example, and

Finally, furniture. Consider waterproof upholstery, outdoor sofas and all-weather rattan, choosing designs and colourways that link with the whole space. You can even accessorise outdoor sofas with scatter cushions and interior throws or blankets for when it gets chilly. If space is restricted, opt for folding furniture and play equipment that can be put away, or build seating into your hard landscaping – an extra-wide low wall makes a great bench seat and you can even build in hinged storage for cushions. The time is right to start planning your stunning summer garden, and creating more useable space outdoors is far more economical than a new basement or roof conversion – in fact, turning outdoor space into an extra outdoor room may add value to your property. Family surfacing business on the road to success!

n an industry that does not always have the highest of reputations, one Dorset business is offering peace of mind backed by 80 years of experience. White & Sons is a family run groundworks and surfacing company that prides itself on testimonials from satisfied customers. Founded in 1935 by Isaac White the business is now run by his grandson Steven and is based in St Leonards near Ringwood. They specialise in surfacing areas such as driveways, forecourts, car parks and private roads – but are also skilled in other areas, including groundworks, block paving, drainage, soakaways, fencing, walls and patios. Steven says the work of some businesses has helped give the driveway surfacing business an image problem, but he believes his firm’s 80-year history and attention to excellent service gives reassurance to customers. “I’m the third generation of Whites running the business. The family worked hard to build a good business and a good name,” he said. “You’ll find we have near enough 10 out of 10 for everything on Checkatrade.com. We turn up and do everything as promised.” These Checkatrade ratings see the company earning a 98.5 per cent approval rating for quote

accuracy, with scores of 9.8 or 9.9 out of 10 for tidiness, reliability, timekeeping, courtesy and workmanship. A member of staff will sit down with the customer to plan and design driveways, patios and paths for free and the person who carries out the initial survey will be a member of the team who works on the job and will remain the first point of contact. The galleries on the company’s website show some of their work. A host of surfaces illustrated include Cobbletech paving, which creates a grand entrance for any home, brick and block walls, soakaway systems, edgings for driveways, flower borders and planters, fencing and gates created to the customer’s specification, and steps designed specifically for each home. They also apply their extensive experience as a contractor to a wide range of commercial work of all sizes. Steven says “Our aim is to provide such a high standard of service that customers who have used the company will never again consider going anywhere else nor recommend anyone else.” For more details, or to see examples and testimonials from some of the company’s satisfied customers, visit their website or give them a call.

Motoring mutterings

By Mike Wattam

Buy an Automaton NOW!

I

n the last issue we overviewed the current and near horizons for automation in cars. But what cars can you buy today which contain those pieces of automation which you really want - and in many cases need to pay extra for? Some of course have been legislated to be fitted in all cars, while others are on the ‘option’ list for the most recently designed and produced cars. Automating car processes has two main objectives; the first being to enhance both primary and secondary safety, and secondly to give the driver less work to do and thus (hopefully) to release time to look for and avoid problems ahead.

Standard Fitments

We have previously mentioned automatic gearboxes and ABS anti-lock braking. We can argue that power steering has been available for many years either as an option or as standard fitment, with some degree of interpreted assistance based upon its interpretation of your input force on the steering wheel. Now, as electric power steering gains popularity it has become normal to read vehicle speed and adjust the degree of assistance from ‘high’ at walking pace, to nil at high speed. Air conditioning has evolved from a simple switch to temperature controlled climate control including pollen filtering, humidity reduction, compensating for the effects of sunlight, and so on. Electronic Stability Programs have been designed to interpret Driving Decision

ways in which the car is deviating from expected handling behaviour, adjusting any severe lack of handling balance by selectively braking one or more wheels and adjusting engine power accordingly.

360 view technologyno fatal accidents by 2020.

New Safety Features

Volvo will feature strongly in this discussion, for they have not only led the introduction of new safety technology over many past years, but they are still the undeclared leaders in introducing safety technology to new cars. Volvo recently announced they are working to achieve “no fatal accidents involving Volvo cars by 2020”, a bold statement indeed. It is also a philosophy which history shows they will deliver, and of course the technology can - and probably will be - applied to their autonomous cars. The use of new technology and current enhancements are designed to improve primary and secondary safety. These include Collision Avoidance which monitors vehicles and pedestrians (or other objects) ahead and when it senses a lack of adequate input from the driver, will auto-brake. This is already standard on some vehicles such as Volvo, and has already proved its worth in reducing the number of rear-end shunts which generate many vehicle and human costs. Meanwhile emergency services and the insurance industry have already noted a +30% fall in claims from this enhancement in 2015 and 2016, and requested legislation to make this standard on all new cars.

Volvo meanwhile have developed sensors to look forward, sideways and to the rear to enable even more sophisticated sensing and avoidance action. Their sensors can detect moving metal, humans including those on bicycles, animals and even Moose! Oh, and brick walls! Lane departure warning is becoming more common, and this is now tending to be integrated with auto-warning the driver (rattling the steering wheel!), and in proactive installations enabling dedicated computer capacity to gently manipulate the steering until the car is correctly aligned to the lane markings. This can be further integrated with blind spot information systems so the car will not turn into a place already occupied by another vehicle! While this level of automation might seem over-the-top, it greatly reduces the need to continually concentrate priority upon this aspect of driving in motorway conditions, and thus reduces stress significantly. Conversely, drivers might be inclined to be over-reliant upon these features and for this reason, the best systems will tell the driver they’ve had enough of this by giving notice of termination! More on driver assistance next time.

Croatia

The Plitvice Lakes By Solange Hando

S

et up in 1949 in northern Croatia, the Plitvice Lakes are the oldest national park in the country and the largest, covering close to 300 square kilometres. There, on the edge of the rugged Dinaric Alps, rocks and water have created a unique landscape protected by UNESCO and one of the most impressive karst formations in the world. Yet just 400 years ago, the whole area was inaccessible, draped in mystery and legends from buried treasures to the kind-hearted Black Queen who gave water to the poor. In the 18th century, it was described in turn as ‘five beautiful lakes in the densest wood’ and ‘the devil’s garden’. But those who come here today know that neither is true: there is no devil in this natural paradise but there are 16 beautiful lakes for all to see. The twelve upper lakes and four lower lakes are all connected, divided by natural limestone barriers shaped by water, wind and plants and creating myriad waterfalls. The highest is the aptly named ‘Large Waterfall’, swollen by the Plitvica river and tumbling down 78 metres into the final section of the lower lakes.

Just a stone’s throw away, the source of the Korana is said to be the most beautiful in karst country, heading through the canyon towards a bucolic village dozing in flower meadows. Meanwhile, footpaths and single-file boardwalks meander from one magical lake to the next, festooned in waterfalls, canyons and caves, and whatever the crowds, little disturbs the peace but the rumbling of cascades and bird song. There are popular viewpoints and secluded corners, steps here and there and for those who want to take it easy, rides on an electric boat across Lake Kozjak or a panoramic train in the upper levels. But nothing beats a leisurely stroll where lush scenery and fresh air quieten mind, body and soul. The lakes beckon, more bewitching the closer you are. Azure, silvery grey, deep blue or emerald green, shimmering in the sun or mirroring a darkening sky, they are for ever changing as light and shade filter through the abundant foliage along the banks. The lower lakes glitter through a rocky canyon, the upper lakes nestle among forested

slopes rising to 1,279 metres. Mediterranean and Alpine plants mingle with fir, spruce and beech and in the remote areas of the north-west, trees are up to 700 years old. Over 1,100 plant species have been recorded in the park, including 75 endemic and 55 different orchids. Gentians and lilies add colour in the undergrowth and grassy bells and wild hyacinths grow alongside endangered species such as the carnivorous round leaf sundew. Spring heather, beard grass and mint are also found along the lakes where maple and sumac trees turn all shades of red and gold in autumn. Wild cats, lynx, deer and wolves all live in the park but the brown bear has become the true symbol of the Plitvice Lakes. Yet visitors on a day trip from the beach are far more likely to spot the butterflies, an Orange Tip, a Painted Lady, a Red Admiral, to name just a few, and at least some of the 105 species of birds, woodpeckers, grebes, larks, finches and others, or perhaps a rare golden eagle hovering in the thermals high above the glistening lakes.

Portrait of a Local Artist Award winning artist and sculptor Rachel Fenner has been visiting the Purbecks since she was a student. “I find the landscape very inspiring,” says Rachel, who has continually revisited the area for more than 50 years. She had always had a desire to become an artist since childhood, which ultimately led her to study at the Royal College of Art from where she graduated from in 1966. “I did a two year Foundation Diploma followed by a National Diploma in Design at Wimbledon School of Art,” explains Rachel. “I then won a place at the Royal College of Art to study for four years on the postgraduate ARCA course.” On leaving Rachel became a full-time professional artist, which was quite a feat for a woman at that time when like in many areas of life, art was male dominated. Career highlights include winning the prestigious Sainsbury Award in 1966, having her first solo show in London in 1976, then being appointed as the City Sculptor for Portsmouth in 1979, and being commissioned for the Jubilee sculpture in Winchester in 2003. Born in Scarborough, Yorkshire, Rachel now lives in Hampshire. She retired from public art in 2004 to focus on painting and now works almost entirely as a painter. Her paintings follow the Modernist tradition of English Romantic Abstraction and are largely inspired by the coastal landscapes of Pembrokeshire and Dorset. She has regularly exhibited her paintings in London since 1992. “These landscape paintings draw upon the physicality of landscape rather than simply being paintings of landscapes,” says Rachel. “In this sense they have become abstract and have assimilated the language of the geometrical forms that underpin much of my environmental sculpture.” www.rachelfenner.co.uk

The World of East Dorset: New book and exhibition celebrate East Dorset’s rich cultural heritage.

O

ver the past year, 85 85 children and young people in 11 East Dorset schools were interviewed as part of an inspiring and fascinating project called The World of East Dorset. All their stories have been published in a beautiful new book, The World of East Dorset: Children’s stories of here and there compiled by Louisa Adjoa Parker. A selection of stories are also featured in a stunning exhibition that is currently on tour in East Dorset schools.

the exhibition has been seen by hundreds of children and families whilst it’s been on tour in Ferndown Middle School; Wimborne First School; Verwood First School; Hampreston First School; and Ferndown First School. Pamela Melia, a teacher at Ferndown Middle School, said “It was amazing! The exhibition turned into this beautiful swan! I’m very proud of the children’s work.” Copies of the book are available from DEED. Please contact Louise Boston-Mammah at DEED, tel: 01202 875411 or email: education@deed.org.uk DEED is a global education centre based in West Moors Middle School. Registered charity number 1072827 Louisa Adjoa Parker is a published poet, researcher and writer. Recent publications include, Blinking in the Light and Salt-sweat and Tears by Cinnamon Press

East Dorset Education Partnership (EDEP), DEED and St James’ First School in Gaunts Common, Wimborne have led this Heritage Lottery Funded project to explore local children’s family history, and raise awareness of the different cultural heritages within East Dorset and how they have enriched our local community.

“The stories here provide a glimpse into the lives of people who are connected both to East Dorset and elsewhere in the world. Through them we can learn a little about other cultures, and understand that as human beings we share the same loves, fears, hopes and dreams.” Louisa Adjoa Parker The book was launched at St James’ First School on 24 November 2015 and this spring
