Dear Readers,

his issue’s cover celebrates the annual Wimborne in Bloom event when Wimborne enters the ‘South and South East in Bloom’, Wimborne in Bloom’ and finally the ‘Britain in Bloom’ competition which is judged on 29th July.

There are lots of fund-raising events throughout the year to help fund the operation. One of which is the Open Gardens on 30th June this year - details on page 6. A great opportunity to see what other people get up to in their gardens and to compare notes maybe!

Despite last year’s terribly dry summer our lawn seems to have more or less finally recovered and seems to be growing about an inch per day at the moment!

Hopefully it won’t be quite so dry this year but so far it’s not looking good for us gardeners.

Paddling pools and waterslides are an even cheaper way to keep the kids amused on hot days although when ours were young our postage stamp sized lawn in south west London ended up as a permanent bog for most of the summer after my husband had the bright idea it might be a lot of fun! So be warned!

Over 20 Wimborne gardens to be opened in aid of Wimborne In Bloom, Sunday 30th June

O

ver 20 Gardens in and around the Town of Wimborne Minster are to be opened on Sunday 30th June, from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm to raise funds for Wimborne in Bloom. Pay £6.00 at the first garden visited. Start at any garden and in any order. Well signposted throughout the Town.

There will also be an information Table in the Town Square.

Once again the event is being held in the morning as well as the afternoon. Why not enjoy a day out and see some lovely gardens at the same time as raising money for Wim-

borne in Bloom to support this years ‘In Bloom’ Campaign.

For the second year in succession the Town is a finalist in the National Britain in Bloom Competition and is also once again entered into the Regional South and South East in Bloom Competition. Judging takes place in July. Teas available at various gardens. The gardens will be well signed. Leaflets available in the Tourist Information Centre and other venues in Town. Local Lady’s generous legacy

A

t a recent Wimborne in Bloom event a short time was taken for the presentation of a cheque with the following words: “The late Mrs Margaret Joyce Walker formerly of North Leigh House, Colehill, who died in January 2017 has left legacies to numerous Wimborne organisations. The first of these was presented at the Wimborne in Bloom Quiz earlier this month. Ian Willis, one of her Trustees, presented a cheque for £10,000.

Margaret had made this bequest by a codicil to her Will having won Third Prize one year

for the Best Back Garden. Margaret was so overwhelmed by this award that she decided to leave Wimborne in Bloom this substantial legacy to enable the committee to “carry on the good work”.

Margaret, a lady of substance was a strong character who did not suffer fools gladly and there were many who kept their distance. She was well known in the past for opening up the grounds of North Leigh for charitable fund raising.

Wimborne in Bloom is humbled by the generosity of this legacy.

Driverless Cars Explained

Motoring

D

riverless cars are a hot motoring topic, with manufacturers, politicians and transport chiefs all talking about them. But what are they, and what do they mean for the future of motoring?

The Government predicts that driverless cars could be in full use on the UK’s roads by 2021.

Are they safe?

The safety of autonomous vehicles was questioned after a woman was killed while crossing the road in front of a self-driving vehicle in Arizona. The issue is the co-habitation of road users and the driverless vehicles – until people are sure how to interact with them, accidents will still happen.

Which manufacturers currently offer some level of autonomous assistance?

You’ll find some partial selfdriving technology in cars from Audi, BMW, Citroen, DS, Fiat, Ford, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Lexus, Mazda, Mercedes, Nissan, Peugeot, Porsche, Renault, Seat, Skoda, Subaru, Suzuki, Tesla, Toyota, Vauxhall, Volkswagen and Volvo. Most cars do incorporate the technology, but it can include features such as adaptive cruise control.

Levels of autonomy The various levels of

autonomous assistance are categorised from one to five.

Here’s what they mean.

Level 1 Introduced around 1990s/00s This base level means that just one element of the driving process is taken over by the car – but the driver is still very much in charge. This level of assistance is mature now and was pioneered by early cruise control systems.

Level 2 Present day Level 2 autonomy represents pretty much where we are today. Computers can deal with multiple functions, so the car can take control of steering, throttle and brake functions – but the driver must show they’re in charge of the car by putting a hand on the steering wheel.

Level 3 Estimated 2020 At level 3 all of the safetycritical functions can be controlled by the car, but the driver must still be able to intervene if necessary – this isn’t completely ‘hands-off’ technology yet.

Level 4 Mid 2020s Level 4 sees cars capable of being fully autonomous, albeit in selected areas – most likely inner-city ones. Dedicated lane markings and infrastructure will be required to ensure that the

cars keep on the straight and narrow too. Complex mapping systems will combine with advanced cameras, sensors and artificial intelligence to determine where the car should go. The driver may have to intervene at certain points, but for the most part it’ll mean hands-free driving.

Level 5 Late 2020s/early 2030s Level 5 will see the vehicles derestricted – they will be capable of driving anywhere, without the need for a driver.

There won’t be a need for a steering wheel or traditional ‘controls’; these vehicles will be fully capable of operating themselves.

It’ll free up space inside the cars, so they’ll probably look more like lounges on wheels.

That’s what we predict, anyway.

Timeline predictions This timeline is based on predictions by many different manufacturers, though most agree that the bulk of progress will happen between 2020 and 2030. It’s a real technology race at the moment – each company is attempting to develop their own systems quicker than the rest. It’s why these dates are estimations – some may get there sooner than others.

ne of the great things about technology is that it can help you when you’re far from civilisation. It can track your hike, provide the tools you need when you’re far from home or just give your phone a boost so you can listen to music while you explore the great outdoors.

Technology

Smartwatches aren’t just for runners and cyclists: there are hiking-specific ones too.

Look for features such as a barometer (for pressure, to help predict weather changes), altimeter (for altitude) and compass (for directions).

Some even have thermometers you can use to help plan what Garmin Fenix 5 smartwatch you’re going to wear.

As with all technology, hikingready smartwatches differ wildly in price and can be expensive: Garmin’s Fenix 5 is packed with features but it’ll also set you back £449.99. If you’re a serious hiker that’s a worthwhile investment, but if you’re more of a weekend stroller a more modest, more affordable watch that uses your phone for GPS might be a better idea. TomTom’s useful Spark 3, which can track your vitals and record your travels, is currently £110.

e are in the middle of summer and the reserve is full of life.

The insect world is buzzing, the leaves on the trees are still fresh and our young birds are embarking on their first flights away from the nest. From the water’s edge to the woodland canopy, this year’s young will be fledging and gaining independence.

The air will continue to be full of birdsong with many birds singing throughout June as their mates produce a second brood.

On the shoreline of Ibsley Water Oystercatcher, Lapwing and Little Ringed Plover chicks will be venturing further from their parents whilst foraging on the shoreline for food.

On Ivy Lake the Common Tern chicks will be taking their first leap away from the comfort of their nest, whilst the Great Crested Grebe chicks with their black and white humbug faces are now too big to catch a ride on their parent’s back.

best viewed on a sunny day, with the meadow and the pond behind the Education Centre both fabulous places to just sit and be still. Red Admiral, Peacock, Comma and Speckled Wood butterflies are all plentiful and in the meadow the summery sound of chirruping crickets and grasshoppers will delight your ears. On Saturday 6th July from 10am until 11.30am you can join the Education Officer to ‘Catch the Bug’ and discover the miniature world of the grasshoppers, crickets, spiders and bugs that inhabit our meadow. The mixture of wetland, woodland and grassland makes the reserve a brilliant place for dragonflies and damselflies, with Brown Hawker, Common Darter, Emperor and Black Tailed Skimmer dragonflies all on the wing along with Common Blue and Azure Blue damselflies. Their life cycle requires wetlands for the start of their life along with open woodland and grassland

We are often asked how to tell dragonflies and damselflies apart: the best way is to wait until they are sitting still or perched on vegetation, as damselflies tend to hold their wings over their bodies whilst dragonflies will rest with them stretched out to the side.

Closer to the ground, keep an eye out for Grass snakes basking on the alder logs and stumps outside Ivy South Hide or on the fallen trees on the edge of Ivy Silt Pond.

The Blashford Lakes Project is a partnership between Bournemouth Water, New Forest District Council and Wessex Water. Southern England Town Criers competition

W

imborne Minster hosted the Southern England Town Criers Competition on May Bank Holiday. Organised by Chris Brown, Town Crier and Town Mayor’s Serjeant and his Deputy Mel Gudger Town Crier of Pamphill and Shapwick, the event attracted 14 Criers from across a wide area. Originally held as part of the Blandford Forum Georgian Fayre it is now held in Wimborne every other year.

Introducing the Criers, Chris Brown welcomed everybody including the Town Mayor Cllr Mrs Kelly Webb who had earlier drawn the running order for the two lots of ‘Cries’. In the morning the first round of ‘Cries’ was the ‘Home Town Cry’ and after a break for lunch at the Allendale Centre the second round of

‘Cries’ was with the theme ‘A Cry of the Criers choice’.

It was a closely fought contest with only half a point separating each of the top three. Winner was Alistair Chisholm of Dorchester with 2nd Christian Ashdown from Haslemere and 3rd Gez Clark all the way from Eccleston.

There were also prizes for the Best Dressed Crier which was won by Christian Ashdown; the Best Dressed Couple Les and Liz Ellis from Dartmouth; and the Best Dressed Escort Joan Dauncey from Melksham.

Speaking after the event Chris Brown said, “It was a really good competition with a high standard of Cries and a large and engaged audience both in the morning and the afternoon”.

Have fun with the kids this summer, without breaking the bank.

Kids Pass Kids Pass gives you 40% off cinema tickets and money off a range of restaurants and days out. You can even get discounts on holidays with Haven, Butlins, Eurocamp and other companies. The pass costs around £40 a year, but a month’s trial costs just £1.

Think small Check whether your local amateur dramatics society is performing any plays suitable for families. Smaller venues are a lot cheaper than wellknown theatres and young children really won’t care if an actor is an award-winning thespian or Mark from the corner shop. Older kids could even join the drama youth group. Don’t discount larger theatres altogether, however, as some offer discounts during the summer holidays.

Children can attend a host of London shows for free during August’s Kids Week, as long as they’re accompanied by a paying adult – see www. officiallondontheatre.com/ kids-week.

Party time Clubbing together with other parents can help to keep costs down. Having a kids’ party at a soft-play centre,

theme park, pottery barn or other activity centre often costs less per head than buying the activity and food separately for each child.

Use PayPal’s Money Pools to collect the money from everyone.

DIY A trip to a pottery workshop usually costs upwards of £10 a child, but if you buy the paints and pots online you can get that down to around £3 or £4 per child. Likewise, a home tie dye kit costs less than £15, which gives you enough dye for around ten children’s T-shirts. Fabric pens are even cheaper (and less messy).

Try eBay for kits, T-shirts and other items to dye, such as cotton bags or pillow cases.

Country fairs often have lots on for kids and entrance is often free for under-16s as long as they’re accompanied by a paying adult. (Tickets are usually cheaper if they’re bought in advance.)

For less than £15 for one adult and four children, you could enjoy a day out with aerobatics displays, ferret racing, motocross displays, puppet shows and more. Just remember to pack a cool bag with a picnic and ice pops, otherwise you’ll spend a small fortune on hotdogs, chips and ice-cream.

Cashback Cashback sites such as Quidco and Topcashback give you money back every time you buy something online from one of their retail partners.

They also offer discounts.

When we checked, Quidco was advertising a fourteen-day Walt Disney pass for the price of seven days, and money off various flights. If you register your credit and debit cards with Quidco, you can also earn money when you shop on the high street, whether you’re buying kids’ clothes or treating the family to lunch out.

Once a Lion, always a Lion

ecently Wimborne and Ferndown Lions Club held a lunch to celebrate the long service achievement of three of the members.

Frank Fortey (40 years) and Robin Hotchkiss and Ken Taylor (both 45 years) have made a huge contribution to the Lions’ cause over nearing half a century.

Lions provide a special bed for Wimborne Hospital

I

n 2018 Wimborne and Ferndown Lions decided to support Wimborne Community Hospital with £4200 for the provision of a type of patient hoist which the hospital had requested. However, later that year such a hoist became available from St. Leonards hospital to fulfil Wimborne’s need.

As a result the money was used instead to buy a special bed designed to avoid injury to dementia patients falling on the floor. The bed was presented to senior sister Seetha Vinod on behalf of the hospital at a ceremony in Hanham ward on April 3rd.

Lions quiz a great success without question!

he Wimborne and Ferndown Lions annual spring quiz took place at the Allendale Centre in April. This year it was a particular success with 130 players in

24 teams vying for the top prize. A big thank you goes to all the quizzers who combined to raise a healthy net profit of over £600 which will go to selected Lions charities.
