ou may have been unlucky and spotted my husband out on his bike wearing his highvis lycra cycling gear at the crack of dawn recently, whilst I am sensibly still tucked up under the duvet!

And this issue’s cover photo was taken on one of his earlybird trips between Godshill and Fritham on a beautiful misty October morning at dawn when the Forest mist just sits in the valleys and hollows for a short period giving the Forest yet another of its myriad and unique atmospheres - so he says! I’ll just take his word for it.

he building now Indigo Indian Restaurant standing next to the old cinema once had an occupant with an unusual combination of careers. In the late Victorian period and the early 20th century it was the home and workplace of George Bentley Corbin, cabinet maker, taxidermist and poet. His shop can be seen in this old photograph c1910 next to the then Town Hall and Corn Exchange.

(See photo on right) George was born in 1841, the son of cabinet maker William Corbin and his wife Harriet of Lynes Lane. In 1881 the census shows that George and his young wife Emily lived in the Market Place shop where George was a cabinet maker and upholsterer. Sadly in 1884 Emily was killed in a railway accident aged 29 and it is said that

‘The Forget-Me-Not’, ‘The Nightjar’ and ‘The Nightingale’. George Corbin died in 1914.

An advertisement in the 1906 edition of ‘The Ringwood Almanac’ shows that at that time George was in partnership with his brother Henry, promoting their cabinet making and upholstering business and also picture framing.

Henry’s son William Corbin later carried on the same business from a shop in Southampton Road and became well-known for his pen and ink engravings of local scenes. Interestingly today’s local wildlife photographer Mike Read is a descendant of this Corbin family, so their love of nature lives on in his photographs and books.

George never recovered from the shock of her early death. From then onwards he lived alone in his shop except for a single servant and became a talented taxidermist and an authority on natural history. According to the late Dr. Little he frequently corresponded with Charles Kingsley and Charles Darwin, both of whom he knew well.

The other photograph c1910 shows Mr Corbin beside his shop window displaying an impressive array of the owls, herons and other birds and animals he had stuffed.

He also wrote poetry which was published under the title of ‘Stray Leaves from the Avon Valley’. Many of his poems reflected his love of nature with titles such as

The WI Turns 100

A

s the Women’s Institute (WI) celebrates the centenary of that first UK WI meeting, we look at its history and its role today.

A SLOW START As the twentieth century began, few AOS (Agricultural Organisation Society) branches welcomed women, and although WIs had begun in Canada and spread to other countries, they hadn’t made it to the UK - until the arrival of Madge Watt, co-founder of British Columbia’s first WI. Madge’s speech about the vital contribution women could make to the war effort through working the land to grow food persuaded the AOS to appoint her to start UK WIs, where women could them share knowledge about agriculture and home industries – and initially focus on increasing food production to counter WW1 shortages.

The first UK WI meeting was on 16th September 1915 in Llanfair PG, and the National Federation of Women’s Institutes (NFWI) was formed in October 1917. After WW1, the WI urged members to stand for election at local and parliamentary level. In 1921 WI member Mrs Margaret Winteringham became the first English born female MP. By 1924, when Jerusalem was adopted as the WI song, there were 3,223 WIs.

WORLD WAR TWO TO DIAMOND JUBILEE The WI’s chair, Lady Denman, became Director of the Women’s Land Army. The WI’s Preservation Centres were vital, canning produce and making jam, turning over 5,300 tons of potential waste into food, while the NWFI’s 1941 report on evacuees, Town Children through Country Eyes, stimulated a debate that ultimately resulted in the post-war family allowances. In 1945, the WI founded Denman College.

The fifties saw the WI spread its wings, organising a music festival and designing a working family’s house for the Ideal home Exhibition. In 1965 representatives from 8,700 WIs celebrated the WI’s Golden Jubilee at a Buckingham Palace garden party, and the rule prohibiting WIs in places with populations over 4,000 was abolished. The sixties ended with performances of The Brilliant and the Dark, an NFWI-commissioned musical following women’s lives through history.

In 1974 the number of WIs reached an all-time high of 9,309, just in time to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee in 1975.

At that year’s AGM, the NFWI pledged itself to ‘the principle of equality of opportunity and of legal status for men and women.’

A THOROUGHLY MODERN INSTITUTION In the 1980s, the WI launched a substantial campaign to raise its profile, culminating in the Life and Leisure Exhibition in 1984, opened by the Queen, and it showed a growing awareness of current technology and issues as the 1990s began.

Perhaps what most overturned its ‘jam and Jerusalem image’ was the response of many members to the Prime Minister’s address at their Triennial General Meeting in 2000. Feeling his speech was becoming a party political broadcast, they rewarded him with a slow handclap.

However, the WI is just as committed to preserving traditional skills as it is to addressing the issues of the day, as demonstrated by their Craft Spectacular exhibition in 2000.

Today, the WI is the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK, with 212,000 members. It still strives to provide women with educational opportunities and campaigns on issues that concern members and their communities, from equal pay and better midwifery to climate change and the plight of the honey bee. So happy 100th birthday, WI – and thank you for all you have done and continue to do.

Fordingbridge Twinning Association

wo dates for your diary: The Fordingbridge Twinning Association has, once again, decided to take part in the “Foire de la Pomme” in Vimoutiers this year, over the weekend of 17th/18th October, where there will be a manned stand which will promote various aspects of Fordingbridge to our French friends and colleagues, with exhibits of local activities and products and contributions from Fordingbridge Junior School. There will be a carnival on the Sunday, where our illustrious Mayor will take part. All are very welcome, since the hospitality afforded to us by the French, is always very warm.

The second date for your diary, is the following weekend, when the second annual Fordingbridge Twinning Association “Jazz

on an Autumn Evening” will take place, hosted by our Mayor, on Saturday evening 24th October. This will be a cabaret evening with cool relaxing jazz, provided by our very own “Vanessa’s Villains”, who appeared at our “Murder Mystery Evening” back in February. This will have a truly authentic French flavour, using genuine French produce brought back from Vimoutiers the weekend before!

HIOWAA help to increase patient survival rates with use of trauma networks.

H

ampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance (HIOWAA) have helped to achieve the recent outstanding results, released yesterday by the Trauma Audit and Research Network (TARN).

The results have shown an increase in the number of patients now surviving severe injuries, who would have died before the introduction of trauma networks in England.

The biggest change in trauma care has been the introduction of Regional Trauma Networks in 2012 to enable the rapid and safe transfer of patients to designated Major Trauma Centres throughout the country. The networks were developed by doctors, nurses and allied health professionals including paramedics and physiotherapists, to ensure that the patient receives the best possible care

from the scene of the accident through to their rehabilitation at home.

Dr Simon Hughes, Director of Major Trauma, University Hospital Southampton, explained how the Air Ambulance has helped with these results; “The launch of Major Trauma Networks and Major Trauma Centres nationally in 2012 has given astounding results. Patients are 63% more likely to survive suffering serious injuries now than only a few years ago. We expected to see some improvements after the launch, based on examples in other countries, but this scale of improvement has blown us away.

The crux of the improvement has been getting the most seriously injured patients to the Major Trauma Centre (University Hospital Southampton) as quickly as possible. The critical care team of Consultant Doctor and Paramedic working on the Air Ambulance together with the paramedics on the ground has enabled patients with life-threatening injuries to get advanced medical treatment immediately on scene together with high speed air transfer to the expert team at the Major Trauma Centre.

These initiatives really are saving lives.”

utumn is a colourful time of year at Blashford Lakes, with the trees displaying ceilings of golden leaves and fungi beginning to carpet the woodland floor. On your visit to the reserve, look out for the popular fly agarics along with shaggy inkcaps, earth stars and amethyst deceivers.

On a sunny day look out for insects still on the wing, including red admiral and peacock butterflies and common darter and migrant hawker dragonflies.

Late October should offer the first sightings of bittern and as the reeds die back it should be easier to see this secretive bird as it has fewer places to hide. Increasing numbers of ducks will be gathering on the Lakes, including gadwall, pochard, tufted duck, teal, shoveler, wigeon and golden eye. The reserve’s kingfishers have had another good breeding year and you may be lucky

enough to spot one frequenting a perch, as it keeps a keen eye on the water below. Another bird likely to be spotted fishing in the shallows is the great white egret, which spends the Autumn and Winter on our Lake shores after a summer in France.

As the darker nights draw in, increasing numbers of birds will be coming in to roost on Ibsley Water, with thousands of gulls, geese and goosander using the lakes as a safe resting and refuge place after dark. A visit to the reserve at dusk is a must, with the ever increasing gull roosts and the gathering starlings swirling in murmuration against the clear skies. As well as looking out for roosting birds you can look to the skies for bats as they emerge for their night’s feed.

If you would like to learn more about the reserve’s wildlife, join the Education Officer for a Wildlife Walk on either Tuesday 17th or Saturday 28th

November, from 2pm until 4pm.

This guided walk will be in search of birds and other wildlife, finishing in the main car park in time to enjoy the spectacular roosts. Alternatively on Friday 13th November, from 7pm until 9pm, you can spend an evening under the stars with members of Fordingbridge Astronomers who will take you on a tour of the Autumn constellations. Caught On Camera!

oncern was growing for a beautiful cat whose coat looked like charcoal velour and who had been visiting for about six weeks. We rarely saw him to start with, just a glimpse here or there, walking across the patio, eating by the back door, resting on the driveway, and always showing up on the ‘spy-cam’ set up in the barn, but we had not seen him for 2-3 days so I played the video card once again and there he was...dragging a broken leg! Panic stations! Where was he now? We had to find him!

We were so thankful that he knew where to come for food, but if it wasn’t for the camera we would not have realized he was in trouble.

We started a search and looked everywhere we could think of, knowing he could not have gone far, as he could barely walk and must have been in considerable pain, but search as we may, we could not find him. I decided to wait.

The ‘spy-cam’ showed he came to the barn for food at about 7pm, so a trap was instigated. He would come into the barn through a hole in the wall, so we placed a makeshift door held open by a piece of string that could be released to close the door as soon as he entered. I took my place out of sight of the trap, ready and waiting for his arrival. Sure enough he came through the hole in the wall dragging his broken leg. I let the string go and the trap door closed his exit. I now needed to catch him but I was worried he might panic. I waited to let him eat his food but then he disappeared into the unlit and cavernous barn.

It was midnight when a search with a torch revealed he had made his way to a comfy settee.

He obviously knew his way around. We closed the door and the cat-flap on this area so that he could spend a comfortable night on this settee and we would know where he was when we came for him in the morning.

Next morning we had to get this untamed feral cat, into a small catching cage, and consider the pain and predicament he was in. I went in to see him and he had not moved all night.

The catching cage was placed outside and covered the cat-flap in the door. There was only one way out, and that was into the cage. When he saw me come for him, he panicked and took off, running straight to the door, hesitated for a moment, then went into the cage. We had him!

X-rays revealed he had indeed broken his leg in more than one place and had also sustained bruising to his cheek and his tongue. The advice from the Vet was to amputate his broken leg rather than try and mend the breaks.

The injury was already three days old so complications may set in. I was concerned that if his leg comes off, it cannot be put back again! Was this really the only solution under the Billy with circumstances? We had not 4 legs. anticipated an amputation, but the Vet assured me that cats do well on three legs, however a feral cat would normally be put to sleep as he could not survive on his own. We very reluctantly agreed to the amputation and we decided to take responsibility for his care. Secretly I hoped and prayed the poor cat would forgive me for saying ‘yes’ to the loss of his front leg, The ‘spy-cam’ saved this cat’s life!

Premium Compact Volvo

The recent period Volvo spent within the Ford Corporation was an interesting one. Heavy investment in mass-production tech-

T5 5-cylinder petrol engine was matched to a razor-response automatic gearbox. The Crosscountry variants of the V40 ride slightly higher than the normal 5-door, with visible skid-plates at front, rear and sides. My top version had four-wheel drive, quite valuable in putting down all that power onto the road. The interior was adorned in leather and every imaginable electronic aid fell to hand. One of the nicest features of any Volvo is that it can be extensively customised to suit individual requirements and the V40 does not disappoint. Consequently, the purchase price starts from under 20,000 to over £34,000, value for a premium brand car. Don’t think the cheapest variant will disappoint - it doesn’t. All versions have the same 5-star safety rating.

So, how does all this translate?

The V40 ‘Cross-country’ under test is a fine car. Somewhere underneath lurks the Ford Focus platform, but this cannot be recognised in the finished car which is re-engineered and styled with typical Volvo individuality, incorporating a whole bunch of Volvo-designed driving and safety technology. Engines and transmissions are designed and manufactured On the open road it conveys a in Gothenburg. All very Swedish! sure-footed and safe limousine stance, yet when ready to GO, The resultant V40 - the smallest it delivers in controlled excess.

hat does the brand name Volvo mean to you?

Tank-like safety? Ultimate reliability? Sportiness or understated design flair? Volvo has oscillated between all these things in recent years and may well have confused consumers who ultimately have quite divergent perceptions of what the Volvo brand stands for. I don’t think our friends in Sweden have been very clear about their brand values either. Recent multiple changes of ownership have further confused consumers as Volvo has been pushed along routes they might not have necessarily chosen. The most recent change has been from Ford ownership, to the Chinese company Geely, which has taken an entirely pragmatic approach, investing heavily in the future of Volvo, whilst encouraging a high degree of strategic freedom.

Sadly for most people the answer is quite likely to be: “Not since I was a child.”

Musicians are most likely to develop their abilities during childhood. It’s the ideal time to learn basic skills such as reading music and playing an instrument, but as children turn into teenagers it’s not unusual to find that the pleasures of learning and playing are sacrificed to the pressures of taking exams, studying at college or university and – eventually – taking up full-time work.

Although it may be hard to find the time to make music as a busy adult, much attention has recently been focused on the physiological benefits of learning to play an instrument. For example, a study based on 157 sets of twins discovered that those who were able to make music were 33% less likely to suffer from dementia.

Recent research has also suggested that playing music can improve listening skills, encourage better selfdiscipline, help with memory and even increase the IQ of

both children and adults. In 2009 the University of Zurich conducted research with people aged 65 and over and discovered that playing an instrument for an hour a week produced strong changes in the brain.

So whether you’re returning to an instrument you once loved to play, or learning for the first time, you can enjoy your hobby in the knowledge that you’re not just bringing pleasure to others through your music, you are enhancing your brain’s capabilities.

If you’re feeling insecure about your musical skills, those first few steps towards learning (or returning to) a musical instrument will be crucial. There are many resources out there, so take your time exploring the options to find a solution that’s tailor-made for your level of skill and experience.

If you live in a city you may be able to access adult education services. Pick up a prospectus at your local library or search online to find a suitable course. Some adult learning institutes let you try a taster session so you can decide if the lessons are appropriate before you book an entire course.

Alternatively, find a local

tutor by searching the Music Teachers UK website (www. musicteachers.co.uk). This organisation offers a free service to help musicians with every aspect of education and performance and the site provides some valuable information, including a helpful guide to selecting a music teacher.

If you are returning to music and have retained some basic (if rusty) skills, you might enjoy joining up with a local amateur music group, or even putting together a group from scratch. Making Music (www. makingmusic.org.uk) helps its members to set up, run and develop music groups in their communities.

The BBC’s website also provides some useful links, including resources to help you learn to read music, explore local courses and even find an amateur orchestra in your area (www. bbc.co.uk/learning/subjects/ music.shtml).

Whatever your interest in music, whether it’s performing to concert level or joining an amateur ukulele orchestra, it can be a hugely rewarding hobby. Apart from the hours of pleasure you’ll get from playing, science suggests that your brain is likely to stay sharp well into old age.

Leaf Litter

A

re you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves? Whether they come from trees in your own garden or from a neighbour, the deluge of leaves that falls in autumn is often enough to get level headed, treeloving gardeners eyeing up chainsaws!

Leaves that are allowed to build up can cause problems - on the lawn they smother the turf grasses, often causing patches of die back, largely due to lack of light and oxygen. If the crowns of the less tough herbaceous perennials or alpines are covered in leaves, they too start to deteriorate. So, like it or not, you need to do something - the sooner the better!

A spring-tined rake is perfect for raking leaves off the lawn, and can even work quite well on a gravel drive. If you have a lot of lawn or a lot of leaves then the easiest way to deal with them is to mow the lawn.

Provided you keep the hopper or grass-collector on the mower, when you empty it out you’ll have a fantastic mix of

grass clippings and chopped leaves. On beds and borders you can pick by hand, or you could invest in a leaf vacuum or a leaf blower (and this can be used on most drives and paths, and lawns too).

evergreens such as holly, laurel and camellia, or those from sycamore and plane. You can speed the process up by adding a leaf mould activator, which is available from garden centres.

After collecting the leaves, make leaf mould. It is easy and makes a fantastic soil mulch or conditioner…for free!

You can also make leaf mould in a bin liner or other bag.

Choose a good quality bin liner and cram it full of leaves, again adding water and/or activator if you wish. Then stab a few holes in the bag with a garden fork, loosely fold over the top and weigh it down with a brick. Bin liners full of leaves can be hidden anywhere that you have the space - perhaps behind the shed, garage or greenhouse.

If you don’t like the idea of black plastic, then there are now some lovely jute mesh bags which can be crammed full of leaves and act as a perfect container whilst the leaf mould is forming, but will eventually rot down and add to the useful material you produce.

Leaves are best rotted down on their own (they take longer to decompose than the rest of the stuff in your compost heap and need less air and warmth), so make yourself a simple and inexpensive leaf mould bin. Just drive four stakes into the ground to make the corners of a square, and then attach chicken mesh around the outside to make a cage. Stack the leaves in, tread or firm them, add some water if they are dry, then more water if the weather remains dry…and then leave them be. Chop up larger or tougher leaves (like horse chestnut) first so they rot down much faster - either mow them with the lawnmower or ‘chop’ them with a sharp spade.

Avoid very spiky leaves, and those that are very leathery and tough - mainly

AUTUMN

In October, nature puts on a magnificent show for us to wonder at, as the trees shed their leaves in glorious Technicolor. As the nights draw in and the ‘Fall’ is upon us, snuggle up with a good book about those silent giants standing guard in the garden.

Eucalyptus - Murray Bail Written by an Australian author this is a modern fairy tale about the widower Holland and his beautiful daughter, Ellen. She, along with his vast collection of eucalyptus trees are his two most prized possessions and when Ellen turns nineteen, Holland reveals that he will permit her to marry the man who can successfully identify all the varieties of gum trees on his property. Of course, Ellen’s not too pleased with the plan, and doesn’t think much of all the suitors who show up at the estate. That is, until a mysterious stranger appears and her curiosity suddenly gets the better of her.

The Lie Tree - Frances Hardinge Faith’s father is found dead, and under mysterious circumstances, leaving Faith determined to get to the bottom of what happened.

What she finds is a set of drawings that lead her to a strange tree that seems to flourish and grow when lies are whispered to it, and there are plenty of mistruths to go around in this tiny island community. The Lie Tree’s fruits bear hidden secrets and Faith will have her work cut out to try and separate the truth from the poisonous fiction.

Snow Falling on Cedars David Guterson Set in the remote and isolated Puget Sound in America’s Pacific Northwest, Snow Falling on Cedars is the story of a remote community rocked by the murder of a local fisherman. San Piedro Island is not the sort of place you want to make enemies, and when JapaneseAmerican, Kabuo Miyamoto is accused, it becomes clear that among the beautiful and dense cedars lies a painful history. It’s a wonderfully atmospheric book that’s full of suspense and tragedy. A great read for a wet autumnal day.

Eats, Shoots and Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation - Lynne Truss This might be cheating a little, and it’s not strictly about trees or leaves, but it is about branches of English grammar and the panda of the title that’s getting a bad rap because of some dodgy punctuation. Never again will we be afraid to use colons and semicolons but thanks to Truss, we will embrace them.

This book is a must-read for anyone who has ever felt frustrated by unnecessary commas on menus; for anyone who has shuddered when the incorrect ‘your’ is

used by a friend or colleague in an email; for anyone for whom standing in the queue at the ‘ten items or less’ (FEWER!) checkout in the supermarket is simply torture.

The Giving Tree - Shel Silverstein A boy grows up and the Giving Tree gives all that she has to help raise him. At first he climbs and plays on her trunk. When he, known only as ‘Boy’ turns into a teenager he needs some money and so the tree suggests that he pick and sell her apples. And so this relationship between the two of them continues, right into the old man’s dotage. Each time the tree helps Boy we are told, “And the tree was happy”. It’s an enchanting story to read to children, or simply to treasure for yourself.

The Faraway Tree - Enid Blyton The Magic Faraway Tree is actually the second story in Enid Blyton’s series, coming after The Enchanted Wood, and is much-loved by children and adults the world over. Joe, Beth and Frannie have moved into to a new house and they discover this fantastic place that is right on their doorstep.

They quickly make friends with Moonface, Saucepan Man and Silky the fairy and are transported to different lands and places. The series is a cult classic and it’s like a big bear hug on a chilly October evening.

hether long, short or in-between, afro, curly, wavy or straight, our hair is one of the first things people notice about us. The right style can detract from imperfections, and tells the world a little something about our personality. It can make us more self-assured; more confident in the workplace and social situations. And, of course, it’s not just about the cut; having the right tools in your arsenal at home can make all the difference.

I have a confession – until recently I didn’t own a hairbrush. I just used my daughter’s, which is shaped like Hello Kitty, but does the job. This new venture means that theatre goers will be able to watch three plays for the price of one – two short plays from the Deckchairs Series

by Jean McConnell and The Monkey’s Paw by W.W. Jacobs.

Annie Mitchell will direct two twist-in-the-tail playlets from the Deckchairs Series –“Dancers” which dissects the tea dancing world and “Day Trippers” in which characters learn more about themselves and their colleagues than they ought to during a day trip to the seaside……

Offering a brilliant contrast to the Deckchairs plays, a new adaption of the classic suspense

drama ‘The Monkey’s Paw’ can be seen on the same night. Directed by Nigel Bonynge, this one act play contains all the ingredients to change the stage setting of a comfortable cottage sitting room into a place of disbelief, sorrow and dreadful anticipation. Prepare to be scared!

Performances will be held in the Victoria Rooms, Fordingbridge over two consecutive nights starting Friday 6th November at 7.30pm.

et again the Bisterne Scarecrow Festival was equally varied and bizarre - as it always is with subjects ranging from topical, political, Disney films, TV soaps, proverbs - the list goes on! We managed to see them all during a sunny Monday afternoon the day after the Sunday judging.

It takes us around two and a half hours on our bicycles which is probably the best way to see them all and very enjoyable having an excuse to explore the highways and byways around the Avon Valley south of Ringwood.

Fortunately the judges must all be avid Emmerdale fans since so much work went into this display - as it does every year and since we aren’t up to speed with the minions as yet as our grandchildren are still very small - our personal favourite was at the Bisterne Church with the church mice tableaux dotted around the churchyard especially the Church Mouse News and the cheese and wine party!

Well done to all of you and especially for the much improved map!

However, it does fit in with the now widespread use of ‘plain clothes’ police cars on our motorways, confirming their switch of emphasis from safety and prevention to accidents, entrapment and revenue generation.

Understanding The Power Of Your Pension Pot

t’s now six months since UK residents aged 55 or over became able to access the money in their pension pots and spend or invest it as they wish.

Previously pensioners had been offered little choice other than buying an annuity, but on April 6th 2015 older people suddenly found themselves confronted by a bewildering range of options.

You may have read media reports claiming that pension pot savings have been used to fund everything from luxury cruises to facelifts, but a close examination of the evidence so far suggests that far from splurging it all on a sports car or the holiday of a lifetime, most people are choosing to invest their pensions wisely.

Richard Butcher, of Pitmans Trustees, which provides independent pension advice, thinks most individuals have reacted “sensibly”, by paying down debts and mortgages or carrying out home improvements.

But while many older investors have found the opportunity to access pension funds a liberating experience, others have become increasingly confused about the options available to them.

Unfortunately confidence tricksters have been quick to capitalise on their uncertainty.

How to spot a pension scam Scammers typically promise

sky-high returns from overseas investments or innovative money-making schemes. They may also offer extra tax savings or claim to know of loopholes that can increase your tax-free allowance. They may also claim that they can help you unlock your pension before the age of 55.

The marketplace is currently awash with businesses eager to benefit from your pension and many of them claim to have the answer when it comes to making the right investment, so how do you tell a scammer from a legitimate company?

The Money Advice Service website (www. moneyadviceservice.org. uk) has published some guidelines to help you stay safe.

You should exercise caution if: • You receive a phone call, text message or doorstep visit out of the blue from someone offering to help you with pension investments • The only contact details available on the company website are a mobile phone number and a PO box address • The business doesn’t want, or allow, you to call them • You are put under pressure to make a decision right away

Fraudsters often go to a lot of trouble to persuade you that they are genuine, with convincing websites and highly plausible salesmen.

It’s not unheard of that they claim to be part of the government-backed “Pension Wise” service, set up to offer impartial advice to investors.

Check the facts before you sign Contact the Pensions Advisory Service for advice on 0300 123 1047 if you’re at all nervous about signing up with a company. If you are unsure about the status of the firm you are dealing with, you can check whether they are registered with the Financial Conduct Authority (www.fca. org.uk or call 0800 111 6768).

Finally, if you think you have detected a scam, you can call the police’s ActionFraud service on 0300 123 2040 to report it.

Investing wisely for retirement has never been more challenging – or more potentially rewarding – than it is now, but you should ensure that your decisions are based on the best possible advice.

Portrait of a Local Artist

“I often travel through the county and stop near Bridport to marvel at the fantastic views across the fields to the sea.”

Colin Merrin is an elected member of the Royal Watercolour Society and his work is in Her Majesty The Queen’s collection. He lives in Hampshire and regularly exhibits in the county.

His was the most expensive painting to be shown in the Forest Connections exhibition at the New Forest Centre Gallery in Lyndhurst, which ran until July. And, priced at £3,250, it sold in the first week.

“I’ve been on holiday to Dorset and painted some watercolours of Charmouth,” says Colin.

“I often travel through the county and stop near Bridport to marvel at the fantastic views across the fields to the sea.”

He adds: “I used to live in Sussex while my partner lived in Hampshire. I would drive down the A27 at various times in the week to see her, so I decided to move to Southsea to be close to her. It proved to be an excellent decision as I live close to Lynn, the sea and the South Downs. I’ve also acquired the biggest studio I’ve ever had.”

Colin has always been an artist and had his first solo exhibition in London in 1981. Aged 23 he was in a pub in Chelsea, worse for wear and recalls pontificating about the state of the art world to impress a girl he had just met. “I became aware that the chap standing listening and nodding in agreement was Lucian Freud, the British painter who died in 2011. He was known chiefly for his thickly impastoed portrait and figure paintings and was widely considered the pre-eminent British artist of his time.”

Cake and Bake Halloween Macaroons For the ultimate Halloween sweet treat why not have a go at making a batch of French Macaroons?

Ingredients: • 230g icing sugar, sifted • 75g ground almonds • 2 large egg whites • 50g caster sugar • Orange and black food colouring gel • 55g unsalted butter, softened • ½ tsp vanilla extract

Makes 16 Ready in 1 hour, plus cooling

TIP The filled macaroons will keep in an airtight box in the fridge for 2-3 days.

Stand at room temperature for 30 minutes before serving.

1. Place half the icing sugar and all the ground almonds in a food processor and process for 30 seconds, or until fine and powdery.

Sift the mixture into a mixing bowl, discarding any tiny pieces of almonds left in the sieve. Set aside.

2. Whisk the egg whites in a large bowl until softly peaking.

Gradually whisk in the caster sugar, to make a firm and glossy meringue. Whisk in enough of the orange food colouring gel to colour the meringue deep orange.

3. Fold one third of the icing sugar mixture into the meringue using a spatula. Repeat with another third of the mixture. Finally add the last third and continue to cut and fold the mixture until it forms a shiny and thick batter that falls in a slow ribbon when the spatula is lifted.

4. Line 2 large baking sheets with baking paper. Spoon the mixture into a large piping bag fitted with a 1cm plain piping nozzle.

Pipe 32 discs of the mixture onto the baking sheets, each with a diameter of 3cm. Lift the nozzle at the top of half the piped discs to create a small point. Leave for 30 minutes to allow the macaroons to dry and form a slight crust. Preheat the oven to 160°C / Fan 140°C / Gas Mark 3.

5. Bake, one sheet at a time for 10-15 minutes, or until the macaroons have a crisp shell and the frilly bases don’t stick when gently lifted from the paper. Leave on the baking sheets for 10 minutes, then carefully transfer to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.

6. To decorate, dip the tip of a fine paintbrush into the black food colouring gel and paint pumpkin faces on the 16 pointed macaroons.

Godshill Produce Show

T

he Godshill Produce Show held recently was well supported with entries from lots of new participants this year. The displays were spectacular, with the “Flower Arrangement in a Teapot” and the “Men Only cake section” proving to be the most the popular categories, as always, where competitiveness is at its most rife!

Trophies for most points in each category were won by the following: Vegetables: Helen Barker; Fruit: Pat Marshall; Flowers: Claudia Weis; Cookery: Anne Dobson; Handicrafts: Patrick Harding; Most points in Show: Anne Dobson.

The Fete which followed in the afternoon included live music from Jazz Quartet, “Vanessa’s Villains”, accompanied by the “Fun Dog Show”, with some excellent and highly amusing participants. Classes included “Dog with the waggiest tail”, “Dog the Judges would most like to take home with them”, the “Dog that most looked like its owner”, and “The best six legs”! There was strong competition for that particular category!

The day was rounded off with a Barn Dance in the evening, managed by caller Lynden Bowen. Dancing, singing and consuming freshly cooked hot dogs were enjoyed by everyone there.

Look out for dates of next year’s extravaganza.
