Dear Readers,

ecently we visted friends in Portsmouth and it seems now that a section of the M27 is to become a ‘Smart’ motorway which as it happens coincides with an article on page 16 that we have explaining the do’s and don’ts of these.

Apart from the annoying 50mph speed limit and ubiquitous average speed cameras which will be in place for months now, it appears that suddenly driving on the hard shoulder will be perfectly safe whereas it used to be against the law and also very dangerous!

So after Googling SMART, I found that my concept of smart isn’t actually necessarily the same when applied to motorways! It’s described as “A simple 5 element acronym used by businesses to create

a helpful aid for an actionable plan for results. The 5 elements being Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-based goals.”

Hence - “It’s Smart Jim but not as we know it!”

On a similar vein we have smart meters that go dumb, unlimited phone deals which are in fact limited or free offers that aren’t, etc! I’m sure you all know of many other examples!

No doubt you’ll agree that the exception is the smartphone which I find is an absolutely amazing and invaluable tool although it can be rather intrusive if you let it!

A huge help of course for all those small businesses out and about but who still need to keep tabs on their customers at the same time. Makes you wonder how we ever managed without them!

his was once a single shop named Manchester House built by draper George Frampton in the early part of the 20th century. It replaced a much older draper’s shop, also known as Manchester House, possibly so called because the majority of the goods sold were made from Manchester cotton. George was the brother of William and Henry Frampton who were in partnership together next door at Frampton’s grocery shop. George Frampton and his family lived in what is now the Inn on the Furlong.

A few years before George’s early death in 1933 his business in the High Street was taken over by Henry Guard. Not much 1988

is known about Mr Guard as he did not live in Ringwood. It is possible he lived in Romsey, where there was a draper of the same name at that time. Despite Guard not being a Ringwood name like Frampton, the shop retained his name when it was bought by Frank Trimmer, who also owned Ghrimes furnishing shop. The draper’s shop was chiefly run by his wife Daisy. During their time Guards became what has been described as ‘the nearest Ringwood had to a department store’. In Brown’s Directory of 1948 Guards was advertised as ‘a wholesale and retail merchant draper and ladies’, gents’ and children’s outfitter. Millinery, tailoring, hosiery, gloves, silks, carpets, linos and house furnishings’ (the latter possibly supplied from Ghrimes).

Around 1956 the business was

sold to Miss Marion Cocks, who continued to use the name Guards as can be seen in the c1960 photograph taken by Ted Baker.

She stocked clothes for all the family, with emphasis on the female customers. The haberdashery was on the ground floor with the ladies’ fashion department upstairs.

The shop finally closed in the early 1970s and was split into four units, shown in the 1988 photo as Hairshops hair salon, Coverup dress shop, Damars Domestics electrical spares and Portman building society. Sadly the small panels of square glass at the top of the showroom windows were all replaced by large ugly fascia boards, but the original early 1900s windows all survive on the first floor. Today there are now three units, Martin & Co letting agents, Spencers estate agents and Three Wishes cards and gifts.

Julia’s House seeks participants for 2019 challenge events

J

ulia’s House, the Dorset and Wiltshire children’s hospice charity, is inviting people to sign up to one of their Challenge fundraising events for 2019.

The five events offer an exciting opportunity to step outside your comfort zone and achieve something truly amazing, whilst raising funds to help children living with life-limiting conditions. Choose from a Jurassic Coast trek, a tandem skydive, two cycle challenges – one through Mallorca’s stunning coastal scenery or one closer to home in the Dorset/Wiltshire countryside - or you may prefer to pull on your running shoes and take part in the popular Bournemouth Marathon Festival.

“By signing up to one of our 2019 Challenge events you can make a big difference to the lives of local, life-limited children and their families,” explains Hannah Miller, Challenge Events Manager for Julia’s House. “We rely on events like this to help us throw a lifeline to mums and dads facing their own enormous challenges every day.”

The season begins on 8 June with the Jurassic Coast Trek – a challenging 13 or 26 mile hike which takes in breathtaking views along Dorset’s stunning coastline. Begin the walk at Osmington for the full trek, passing landmark sights including Durdle Door and Lulworth Cove, or join the trail at Kimmeridge for a shorter option as you make your way to Acton Field Campsite near Swanage. All participants will be able to celebrate their achievements with a complimentary hog roast and glass of prosecco at the finish line.

Could you be brave for just one minute to help a child feel brave for a lifetime? Take part in The Big Jump on 3 August and experience the thrill of a tandem skydive, jumping from 13,000 feet under the control of an experienced instructor. A dedicated contact at Julia’s House will give you one-to-one support all the

way and will be there on the day to watch your jump at the Army Parachute Association near Salisbury.

New for 2019 is the Mallorca Cycle Challenge (12-16 September), an epic 4-day adventure during which you will conquer the best and most picturesque climbs on the island, including the iconic Sa Colbara, Puig Major and the breathtaking Cap de Formentor. Exclusive to Julia’s House fundraisers, the Mallorca Cycle Challenge offers a unique opportunity to test your cycling to the limit. Find out if this amazing adventure is for you at a free information evening at the charity’s Dorset hospice in Corfe Mullen on 26 February. David Williams, an experienced ride captain will be on hand to explain all about the challenges of cycling in Mallorca. You’ll be able to ask questions about the ride, get advice on fundraising from the Julia’s House team and discover how the money you raise will make a difference to local children and their families.

There’s also an opportunity to get on your bike closer to home with The Big Ride on 22 September. Tough hill climbs, quiet rural roads and spectacular views combine in this classic cycle event starting from the gorgeous Larmer Tree Gardens on the Dorset/Wiltshire border.

Taking in a choice of two circular routes of 50 or 100 miles, The Big Ride is suitable for seasoned cyclists or anyone looking for a fresh goal to boost their fitness.

If running is more your style, the Bournemouth Marathon Festival (5-6 October) provides an irresistible combination of vibrant atmosphere, fresh sea air and fabulous views.

Best of all, it offers something for all ages and all levels of fitness, from the challenge of a fullon marathon to a Kids’ K – meaning your family can run for Julia’s House families.

Spotlight on Trevor Parsons, Verwood’s wildlife photographer

A

s a child brought up in London Trevor Parsons was a keen photographer.

He moved to Verwood from London in 2002 and has recently re-discovered his love of wildlife and landscape photography that he had as a child. He is a member of the Royal Photographic Society and has worked for the photograhic library Getty.

After visiting The Wildlife Roadshow at Lyndhurst last year Trevor was very much encouraged by Simon King from the BBC Springwatch team and says “Before last year no one had seen my photos apart from my family. It

was only when I spoke to Simon King at his wildlife roadshow at Lyndhurst Hampshire and him saying social media was the best way to get my photos out there that I thought I would give it a try and it’s kind of taken off for me. I am a passionate nature photographer.”

He has also recently been interviewed on BBC Solent radio and Forest FM and has had photos featured in The Times and RSPB’s Nature’s Voice Instagram page.

Local WaterAid supporter receives President’s Award

L

ocal WaterAid supporter, Hazel Taylor, has been given the President’s Award for Outstanding Voluntary Contribution to WaterAid, the highest level of commendation WaterAid can offer its supporters, which was presented at the charity’s Annual Supporter’s Day in London.

Hazel has supported WaterAid, which works to give everyone, everywhere access to safe water and sanitation, since she joined Bournemouth Water in 1991. Initially helping at events and fundraising and then serving on the local (Wessex Area Southern Support Group) Committee, she later became the Company’s WaterAid Representative and then their voting member. Hazel began giving talks in 2002 (delivering over 100 talks to date) and then took on the role of Speaker Co-ordinator for the South. After retiring in 2014 she joined the Dorset Support Group looking after PR and continuing to help at various local fundraising events as well as ‘stand-manning’ at various conferences.

Hazel said “I am extremely honoured to receive this award, I’ve really done nothing outstanding or exceptional just 27 years of support for a cause I truly and deeply believe in”. She is keen to promote WaterAid talks

The Silence of the Girls – Pat Barker The Silence of the Girls is a vivid retelling of Homer’s Iliad.

Villanelle is a coldblooded assassin, who you just can’t help but root for. Eve is the woman tasked with stopping her. The storyline is quite different from that of the TV series and has less dark humour, but there’s still plenty of suspense to keep you reading.

Smart Motorways Explained

ast swathes of the UK’s road network are being transformed into ‘Smart Motorways’.

The government cites them as the solution for congestion, with the hard shoulder being used as a live lane and overhead gantries displaying variable speed limits with cameras enforcing them.

Highways England says the introduction of Smart Motorways has ‘increased journey reliability’ as well as reducing personal injury accidents. But this new network requires a new way of driving, as well as a better understanding of what the overhead signs mean. Let’s take a look.

Are there different types of Smart Motorway?

There are. Though the overall objective of the scheme is to improve congestion, there are different types of Smart Motorway dotted throughout the country.

The first is a controlled motorway. This retains its hard shoulder, which can be used in the event of an emergency.

The remaining lanes are subject to variable speed limits. These are displayed on overhead gantries, and enforced by speed cameras.

If no speed limit is displayed, then the national speed limit is in place.

Then there are all-lanerunning sections of motorway.

This means that all lanes of the motorway are live, and there isn’t a section of hard shoulder. In the event of an

Any driver who ignores this could not only be getting into a dangerous situation, but subject to a £100 fine and three penalty points on their licence. Again, overhead speed limits are enforced by cameras.

Finally, you’ve got a dynamic hard shoulder.

While sounding like an 80’s prog-rock band, this section means that the hard shoulder can be opened to live traffic during periods of congestion.

A solid white line still signifies the hard shoulder’s location, but those overhead gantry signs will display whether or not it can be used by traffic.

It shouldn’t be used if the signs above the lane are blank or displaying a red ‘X’.

Again, this is enforced by the overhead cameras.

What happens if I break down on a motorway with no hard shoulder?

Breaking down on the motorway can be stressful and potentially dangerous at the best of times, but what happens if the worst happens on a Smart Motorway with no hard shoulder?

Should you begin to suffer with vehicle difficulties, look out for an emergency refuge area (ERA). These are denoted by blue signs with an orange SOS telephone symbol, and are dotted at 1.5 mile intervals along the highway.

If you’re unable to get to

an ERA, you should attempt to get onto the verge (providing there is no barrier), switch on your hazard lights and exit the vehicle safely via the nearside door. If you can’t get to the nearside of the motorway safely, stay in the vehicle with your seatbelt securely fastened.

If you’ve been able to get out of the car, contact Highways England via one of the phones placed in the ERA. However, if you can’t exit the vehicle, you need to call 999 from your mobile.

Can I get caught for speeding even if a limit isn’t displayed above the road?

This has been a point of contention for some time.

Highways England states that: “All mandatory speed limits are enforced by police, as is the national speed limit of 70mph when no speeds are shown. If you break the speed limits you will be caught.” The best advice is simply not to exceed the speed limit.

Do Smart Motorways actually work?

According to Highways England, Smart Motorways are helping to keep roads moving. Published statistics say that journey reliability has improved by 22 per cent and, as mentioned, personal injury accidents have been reduced by more than half. Highways England also says that where accidents did occur, their severity was much lower overall.

that day to take me to an important motor industry event.

Purely by chance enter the Fiat 500, courtesy of Europcar.

My example was decorated outside in a lurid tomato-ish pink, to be repeated internally with art-deco influencing for the white instruments and upholstery. Yes, this car looked very jazzy and had all those now-essential trimmings such as sunroof, climate control, DAB radio and bluetooth phone connection. Topping it off was the tiny ‘Twinair’ two cylinder turbocharged petrol engine making only 600cc and sitting in the front of the car - so unlike the original 500. Was this going to be an uncomfortably long road trip?

Not so. Even before I got out of Europcar’s compound, I felt my expectations lifted considerably. A tiny engine but one which wasn’t afraid of hard work, ably assisted by a smooth quick-changing gearbox, suspension which seemed quite firm and ultra-light steering, all working in complete harmony very pleasant indeed.

But could it cut the mustard on

the motorway, and down the lanes?

This little car is never going to eat a Ferrari for breakfast, but was certainly able to mix with average traffic and overtake quickly on the motorway, I was so impressed.

My next surprise came with its performance down the lanes. The suspension was surprisingly supple and together with quick steering it inspired confidence and could be placed on the road very accurately, surprising oncoming cars. The turbo showed me that a tiny engine can be programmed to lift the Titanic if necessary, so a fast but economical pace could be maintained very safely, as I had already learned this car has powerful brakes and excellent stability after an uncomfortably close experience on the motorway.

With 4 seats, the rears are just about sufficient for small people if the front seats are not pushed too far back - yes, the front seats had adequate adjustment. Apart from the optional sunroof, this car has few frills and this is reflected in the surprisingly low price - there are more expensive posh or racy Abarth versions available, but you really don’t need all that to have loads of fun. You can take it that I liked this car a lot. A very Italianate character!

ome cars are iconic, even for people who don’t drive. Think small cars and the choice becomes difficult. Certainly the Austin Mini was one and remained in production for over 40 years, the original Smart was another which had a chequered history, while the Italians who always wanted their designs to please visually, came up with the original Fiat 500 which was to star in many films such as the Pink Panther series - and in visual terms remains in production to this day. There is an extensive cluster of other city cars including those from the far East, from Volkswagen, Peugeot and Renault - which in my view all fall very far short of iconic status.

Inevitably, my plans for one particular car road test were thwarted by a careless car maker failing to deliver - or to notify me - so I was forced to rent the only car available for

Forgotten Foods

I

n the era of supermarkets, ready meals and worldwide food imports, this month we look at some of the more unusual British dishes that were once common but have now disappeared from our everyday tables.

History

There is no doubt that although many of our staples have remained, the dishes we eat daily have changed drastically over the centuries.

Who would now enjoy a bowl of garum? Yet this fermented fish soup was a favourite of the Romans.

We tend to think of the medieval era as being typified by banquets overflowing with roast meat and washed down with endless tankards of mead. In fact, there were many cookery books kept at this time and dishes were often surprisingly complex, served with a great deal of visual wit.

Take for example the cockentryce. A capon, or castrated cockerel, was boiled, cut in half and sewn to the rump of a piglet. This was then stuffed and spit-roasted before being ‘gilded’ using

In those days if you were offered custarde, you wouldn’t have poured it over your apple pie. Custarde was a type of 15th century quiche made with eggs, veal and prunes.

Medieval foodies loved to combine fruit with their meat in dishes like fish sausage, made from a mixture of fish, currants, cloves, mace and salt.

Puddings were equally creative with wonderfully poetic names such as ‘a dish of snow’ - a concoction of whipped egg whites and apple purée, and ‘eggs in moonlight’ - eggs poached in rose water and sugar to resemble moons.

Some dishes would probably not be considered palatable today. For example, in the 1700s, cows’ udder would be eaten either roasted or boiled with spices and served cold, and Richard Bradley’s The Country Housewife and Lady’s Director in the Management of a House and the Delights and Profits of a Farm (1736) contains a recipe for boiled vipers.

In rural areas, both badger and hedgehog were considered a delicacy.

Bradley’s cookery book has instructions on how to prepare badger by cutting off its ‘gammons’ (hind legs), stripping them and then soaking them in brine for a week to ten days, after which they should be boiled for four or five hours and finally roasted.

The hedgehog was a Romany favourite and would have been widely eaten in midBedfordshire where there was once a thriving Romany gypsy population. The hedgehog would be caught, packed in clay and baked on the open fire. Once the clay had hardened it was broken away, which took the skin and spines with it, to uncover a meat said to look and taste like roast pork (hence the ‘hog’ perhaps).

Beestings (or beastings) pudding was another rural dish. A milk pudding, it was made at home from the rich colostrum of a cow that had recently given birth.

The Victorians were adept at using every part of a slaughtered animal for food, from the brains to the hooves.

Calves’ ears would be shaved, boiled and fried; offal used to make various patés; and calves’ feet boiled to extract the natural gelatine.

We could probably learn a lot from the Victorians in managing our food wastage today. Perhaps future generations will look back on our love of Super Noodles and tinned baked beans with both horror and amusement.

The Changing Face of Television As satellite TV turns 30 in the UK, how has TV changed in those 30 years?

y 1971, TV was so integral to our lives that, according to Joe Moran’s Armchair Nation, “Ten per cent of homes still had no indoor lavatory or bath, 31% had no fridge and 62% had no telephone, but only 9% had no TV.” Yet back then we were watching just 3 channels.

The launch of satellite TV in the UK in 1989 brought Sky One, Sky News, Sky Movies, Eurosport, MTV, Screensport, Lifestyle and The Children’s Channel on air (along with porn channels swiftly banned

by Parliament). Suddenly, we were spoilt for choice. As the ‘90s progressed, we began to pay for that extra choice but were offered more channels and access to Premier League matches. We were enjoying EastEnders, Coronation Street and Only Fools and Horses, alongside US shows destined to become iconic: Friends on Channel 4 and The X-Files and The Simpsons on Sky. Sky brought us Digital in 1999, with 160 channels and innovative interactive services, and soon after, Sky+. We could now pause live TV to make a cuppa – and record it without a VHS or DVD

recorder! Telewest offered a rival digital cable subscription service while Freeview, and later Freesat, boxes offered a range of free channels (including some from Sky).

During the noughties, we watched reality TV like Big Brother, Wife Swap and their back-to-basics stablemates Ray Mears’ Bushcraft and Castaway 2000; fell in love with BBC’s rebooted Dr Who; and became hooked on hit dramas like Spooks (BBC), Lost (CH4) and 24 (Sky One). The talent and contest show reboot brought us the X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent, Pop Idol and Strictly Come Dancing. By 2008, there were 9 million British Sky subscribers, with 500,000 watching in HD. But the disruptive force of TV streaming was on its way. Netflix launched its UK service in 2012 and has produced original content with the hugely popular series Stranger Things. Having bought Lovefilm in 2011, Amazon morphed it into its new Prime Video streaming service in 2014 and has produced its own hits too, including Outlander and The Man in the High Castle. Both

companies have also rescued programmes unpopularly dropped by other channels, such as BBC’s Ripper Street (Amazon) and Fox’s Lucifer (Netflix). Rival streamer Hulu scored its own original hit with The Handmaid’s Tale.

However, ‘normal’ TV can still hold an audience, producing smart thrillers like Sherlock and Broadchurch and the unlikely hit, The Great British Bake Off, on terrestrial TV, while satellite delivers epic sci-fi and fantasy with the phenomenally successful Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead.

TV has brought triumphs and tragedies such as war, the moon landing, terrorist attacks and royal weddings into our homes, as well as entertainment, and today, we don’t even need a TV ‘set’ to watch it. But if you don’t own one, then I have to ask, in the words of Joey from Friends: “What does your furniture point at?”

Utility bills: it’s probably worth holding on to these for 12 months, as this allows you to keep track of what you actually use.

Personal documents: these include birth and marriage certificates, National Insurance certificates, court orders and decrees, deeds, copies of wills, share certificates, motor vehicle documents and mortgage papers. Such documents should be stored securely and kept forever.

Shredding: if you tear up a document by hand, the chances are that a criminal could still put it together like a jigsaw. Shredding is a much safer option and you can buy a cheap, hand-operated shredder from around £10.99 upwards.

Burning: incinerating your documents is a simple solution, but do bear in mind any local authority restrictions if you are planning to light a bonfire. Consider the fire risk and make sure your smoke doesn’t cause nuisance to neighbours.

Soaking: you can destroy paper by mulching it in a bucket of water. When it dissolves it should be easy to tear it up, but make sure it’s reduced to an unreadable pulp before you throw it away.

Recycling your paper waste is good for the environment and tackling those piles of outdated paperwork will create more space in your home. You can also feel good about ticking off another task on your ‘to do’ list, so don’t delay, start sorting!

ingwood U3A (University of the Third Age) was formed in 2012 and currently has a membership of around 200. It holds monthly meetings in the main hall at Greyfriars Community Centre on the third Thursday of the month when apart from socialising with some 60-80 regular attendees over coffee and biscuits members listen to a variety of interesting speakers. Potential new members are always welcome to come along and pay just £2 at the door.

World Glaucoma Week - March 10-16 2019

his annual global initiative raises awareness about glaucoma which can lead to damage of the optic nerve. Often there are no early symptoms and the damage caused is irreversible. So regular eye checks are vital, as early detection means the disease can be treated with worsening damage being limited.

Sight loss from any eye condition can have a tremendous impact on people’s lives making getting out and about much more difficult and potentially leading to social isolation.

Ringwood and Fordingbridge Club for the Blind have been supporting local visually impaired people for many years and are keen to reach those who are unaware of the club and what it has to offer.

Meetings are on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month at Greyfriars Activity Centre and provide support, advice and a social occasion.

lashford Lakes is getting a makeover! The unique mix of habitats at the Wildlife Trust nature reserve is home to a range of wildlife from kingfishers and otters to our famous great white egret, Walter. Soon visitors will be able to enjoy looking for and learning about our iconic wildlife and more besides from our new and much improved facilities.

Thanks to generous donations from the local community and funding from Veolia Environment Trust, we are able to renovate parts of the reserve to make it as welcoming as it can be for people and wildlife.

We have begun work on a number of changes and you may notice some parts of the reserve are inaccessible or currently not looking their best. However, this is only temporary and the results will be a vastly improved and altogether better nature reserve.

Here is what we have in store…

• A brand new bird hide – this will be a much bigger, more flexible space overlooking Ibsley Water than the existing

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust. www.hiwwt.org.uk

Tern Hide it replaces. The new hide will have a green roof perfect for pollinators and will provide panoramic views so you can get the best look at the lakes’ wonderful wildlife.

• A second pond and a new sensory garden – these additions will provide new habitat for wildlife and more accessible pond dipping areas for visiting groups of children and adults.

• A welcome hut and more seating – a new welcome hut will be manned by volunteers who will greet visitors and answer questions about the wildlife. We will also introduce more seating and picnic tables.

• A new wildlife discovery trail and improved signage – we are creating a new discovery trail with beautiful willow sculptures and chainsaw carvings for visitors to enjoy. New and improved signs will guide visitors and provide more information about the reserve’s wildlife.

• A new elevated viewpoint – this will be beside the main car park to give panoramic views across Ibsley Water,

ideal for viewing starling murmurations and other gatherings of birds.

We’re very excited about the improvements to Blashford Lakes; it is such a special place and we hope the new developments will help more people experience and appreciate the wonderful wildlife on our doorstep.

Bringing A Pet Into Your Family

ets can bring a lot of fun, laughter and comfort to a child’s life. Elizabeth Kilbey, from Channel 4’s Secret Life of 4 Year Olds, says: “Research from BMC Psychiatry has revealed that interacting or simply being in the presence of animals has a soothing effect on children, reducing their heart rate and skin temperature. Spending time with furry friends, and stroking, cuddling and caring for them, can release comforting endorphins.”

All animals need care and attention, but some require more than others. Birds, for instance, need to have their cages cleaned out once a week and their food and water changed daily. Dogs need at least one walk a day (often more) and most don’t like to be left alone for more than four hours at a time.

The age of your children will play a big part in choosing the right pet for your family. A big, boisterous puppy could easily knock a toddler over, for example, and won’t take kindly to having its tail pulled, and some breeds of hamster are too small and fast for

young children to handle.

You’ll need to factor in the cost of food, any regular medications, pet insurance, potential vet’s bills and accessories such as cat litter and toys. Depending on your circumstances and the type of animal you choose, there may also be other costs involved, such as paid dog-walking services or cattery costs.

Once you’ve decided what type of animal you want, you’ll need to find the pet that’s right for you. Rescue centres are a good first port of call, as they should be able to tell you what age group a pet can live with, whether it’s house-trained, how long it can be left alone for, and so on.

If you’re planning to buy a puppy, it’s sensible to choose a breeder that’s registered with the Kennel Club, as they have to adhere to strict ethical and health criteria.

Less reputable breeders don’t always provide the level of healthcare they should, which means you could end up with large vet’s bills in the future.

If you’re not able to care for a pet full-time, you could look at ‘borrowing’ one for walks and play. It’s worth

Why It’s Important to Groom Your Pet This Spring

Grooming is an important part of your pet care regime throughout the year, but when spring arrives you can be sure your furry friend will want to shed their coat in the warmer weather as much as we do.

So what do you need to consider when grooming your pet this springtime?

PETS

Brush them at least once a day Longhaired cats and dogs should be brushed at least once a day at this time of year.

It not only makes them feel more comfortable, but also prevents knots and tangles developing. If the weather is particularly warm it may also be worthwhile having your dog trimmed – this makes them easier to groom, and also reduces the time you have to spend vacuuming.

Watch out for fleas and ticks Grooming your pet regularly means you’re more likely to spot fleas or ticks that have taken up residence in their

fur. Encouraged out into the environment by the warmer weather, they can be difficult to spot unless you’re close to your pet. Dealing effectively with fleas and ticks is an important consideration, however, as ticks in particular can cause serious illness.

Avoiding hairballs When your pet grooms itself, loose hairs are ingested and can cause a blockage in their digestive tract. Cats in particular are fastidious about grooming themselves, which makes hairballs a common issue, especially for longhaired breeds. Regular grooming with a brush helps to avoid this problem by reducing the amount of fur entering their system.

The End of Car Ownership: a Vision for the Future?

ou may have seen them parked in reserved spaces around town, especially in places like London: Pay as You Drive rental cars. They are increasingly popular in cities where insurance, parking costs and the availability of public transport make running a car expensive and unnecessary. When you need to venture further, renting a car is the obvious solution.

In fact, most of us already rent our cars anyway via Personal Contract Purchase (PCP).

Allied to this, last year saw the twin announcements that London would trial driverless cars in 2019 and Addison Lee, the private hire firm, wants a driverless taxi fleet by 2021.

So, if you don’t need to drive a car, why own one?

The way we buy, pay and shop for anything

has changed out of all proportion in the last ten years: online purchase, cashless, rent it, lease it, same-day delivery. Suppliers have had to wake up to this fact, and quickly.

Making cars is a tough game to be in anyway. 8% profit margin is what most manufacturers work on, so being agile in the way they sell and knowing how we make car purchases is vital for them.

I wager that the upcoming seismic shift in the way cars are driven will trigger a way we pay for them too. Why part with your hardearned money for your transport, even when you are not using it? Why not just use an app to “whistle” up a driverless car to pick you up and collect you again after an evening out?

It’s going to happen. There’s too much money riding on it.

Kindness really does matter

upils in Year 7 at both Ringwood School and Burgate School joined half a million young children around the world to create an individual poster for this year’s Lions Clubs International Peace poster Competition. The theme this year was “kindness matters” and right is the stunning design presented

by Alithea Rivero Rooke, the winner at Ringwood School. Ringwood and Burgate School joined schools globally to participate in this contest in which the pupils are challenged to consider what international peace means to them and how they can convey this through art. Ringwood and Fordingbridge Lions Club sponsored this at both schools and the designs and ideas created were truly inspirational.

One winner from each school was selected to progress to the next stage of the competition.

Copies of those shortlisted as the best six designs from each school are being showcased in a very special exhibition being held at our very own Lunns Art Gallery, 13 Christchurch Road, Ringwood. Heidi Killen at Lunns Art store was kind enough to donate 12 prizes for all the finalists from each school. In addition, Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Clubs presented certificates and prizes to the top 6 entries from each school.

The top 3 entries from Burgate School were; Winner – Lucy O’Boyle, 2nd – Abigail Bass, 3rd – Olivia Davis.

The top 3 entries from Ringwood School were; Winner – Alithea Rivero Rooke, 2nd – Lilly Mae Roe, 3rd – Lauren Brown.

Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Club would like to thank all the pupils at both schools that took part in this exciting contest and to the staff in the art departments at each

school whose help was invaluable in launching and promoting the competition to the pupils.

Finally we would like to offer our sincere thanks to the support of Heidi Killen at Lunns Art Store in Ringwood.
