s I write, this is the first weekend of the school holidays so let’s hope the recent lovely July weather continues for a while longer. We do seem to be blessed with particularly fine weather in Ringwood.

So I’m hopeful it will last for August’s Bisterne Scarecrow Festival, Bournemouth’s Airshow and Ringwood’s Carnival in September, to name but a few of this summer’s marvellous local events being held during the holiday season.

This issue has a quirky holiday travel article on page 32 which is rather different from the normal sun sea and sand trip, but Bobbie Dawson, our local seasoned traveller writer takes it all in her stride of course!

*A currier is a specialist in the leather processing industry. After the tanning process, the currier applies techniques of dressing, finishing and colouring to the tanned hide to make it strong, flexible and waterproof.

C

onsidering its imposing architecture and important place in Ringwood’s history, it is remarkable how few old photographs exist of the house we know as Church Hatch. For although it stands directly next to the Parish Church, the house is tucked behind another important building, Old Bank House, which conceals it from many of the views taken of the Market Place. The old photograph shown here must have been taken on a market day around 1900.

In the 18th century the house, then known as ‘The Hornes’, was owned and occupied by the Willis family, who for several generations were influential wealthy lawyers and stewards of Ringwood Manor. The house is pictured on a 1769 map of the Willis estate, a copy of which now hangs in the Church Parish Rooms. The Willis family also owned the adjacent building (then the old Crown Inn, now Old Bank House), so it seems that they did not mind that their own frontage was obscured by their more prominent neighbour. In 1779 bachelor owner John Willis stabbed himself to death, leaving a fortune of over £100,000 to a lucky nephew.

During the early 19th century my research shows the house was owned by Robert Hicks, a currier* who became a banker with partner James White. Robert and his wife Elizabeth had four daughters; the eldest married Ringwood surgeon Thomas Dyer and another married lawyer Robert Parr, one-time Town Clerk of Poole. By this time the house and its extensive grounds (now part of the Furlong Shopping Precinct) appear to have been called

‘The Parks’. In the early 1830s Elizabeth Hicks, by then a widow, retired to Poole and the house was sold to another family of lawyers, the Davy family, who occupied the house for the rest of the 19th century.

During the early 20th century Admiral G.H. Hewitt and family were in residence until in 1914 the house became a private school, originally called Ringwood Collegiate. In 1926 a new headmaster changed its name to Ringwood Grammar School, which it remained until 1946 when the school relocated to Bournemouth. It was then used by the Department of Social Security until 1981. Since then the house has been converted to private offices for rent.

Exactly when the name Church Hatch was first used is unknown to me.

Ringwood’s iconic Jubilee Lantern installed in 1887, can be seen between the buildings in the old photo but the picture was taken from a much higher viewpoint, probably from a 1st floor window in the buildings opposite.

Lions on the loose at Paultons Park

n Sunday 22 June 2014 Paultons Park near Southampton opened its doors to 38 Lions Clubs from all over the District including Ringwood & Fordingbridge so that 3800 guests could enjoy a fun day out at the spectacular theme park

in Hampshire. Lions clubs from far and near were encouraged to join in the fun by inviting deserving guests from their own local areas to all descend on Paultons Park for the day.

Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Club invited a group from The Stable Family Home Trust (SFHT) at Bisterne near Ringwood to be their guests for the day at Paultons Park. Pictured are the group from SFHT being welcomed to the park with a larger than life cuddly lion.

Everyone had a wonderful day at the park in glorious sunshine. Jo Gibbs, a Manager for Stable Family Home Trust commented: “We would all like to offer our sincere thanks to the generosity of the Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions, for giving us a truly wonderful day out. Their friendly approach and attention to detail ensured that all attending on the day walked away with immense smiles on their faces.

The summer is in full-swing and there’s an abundance of luscious fruits to get our lips smacking. We’ve handpicked some choice novels that are ripe with ideas, visions, fantastic stories and characters we will never forget.

The Grapes of Wrath John Steinbeck If you want drama on an epic scale, then The Grapes of Wrath will whip you into a frenzy, beat you into a pulp and then spit you out into the corner. It’s the American Dream in its purest and most stark form, and follows the lives of one family of sharecroppers, the Joads from Oklahoma. Driven from their homes and their agricultural land by the Dust Bowl, they head west to California in search of work and a future.

The devastation wreaked by the Great Depression scarred the landscape and battered these migrating ‘Okies’ into submission. Steinbeck won a Pulitzer for his tribute to the human spirit, endurance and dignity and possibly the greatest American classic ever written.

Watermelon Marian Keyes How does it feel to have your husband walk out on you, the day your first child is born? Claire is quite literally left holding the baby, when her husband decides to up and leave her for the woman who lives in the flat downstairs. Oh, the humiliation. Oranges are not the Only Fruit - Jeanette Winterson Sixteen year old Jeanette looks all set to lead the life of a devout missionary, carrying out God’s work and committing her life to the church, having been adopted as a child by a family of evangelists. That is until she finds a greater object of passion and a reason to commit to a mere mortal; a young female convert of hers.

Suddenly the path that seemed set out for her is vanishing before her eyes and she is forced to leave behind the church, her family and her home in the industrial north of England. This is a powerful and challenging story, taking one girl a long way from where she started, in the pursuit of happiness and a clear idea of ‘self’.

The Lemon Table Julian Barnes All the characters in Barnes’ The Lemon Table are facing the end of their lives, and all with a different perspective and reactions to reaching the ‘end of the road’. One man measures his life in the number of haircuts he has given, whilst a retired army major prepares for his trip to his regimental dinner, and his regular date with ‘working girl’ Babs. Elsewhere, a woman in a nursing home develops a new correspondence with an author that brings vitality to an ageing mind and body. None of them will go quietly into the night, and each finds a way to face up to their mortality with passion and vigour. It’s a lesson for us all, told in the most poignant of ways.

Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café Fanny Flagg With good food and friends you can’t go far wrong. Idgie and Ruth open their cafe, and their arms to the local townspeople, creating a home from home for many of their customers. It’s a book that’s jam-packed with laughter, tall tales and even the occasional murder, all served up with a side of grits. Reading Fried Green Tomatoes is like tucking into some hearty southern fodder; ‘soul food’ as they say in Alabama, and good for the soul is exactly what this delicious and mouth-watering offering is.

A Clockwork Orange Anthony Burgess Not one for the faint-hearted, this is the story of fifteen year old Alex, an ultra-violent and highly unpredictable ‘droog’ who must be reformed and rehabilitated by the State.

Burgess paints a picture of a nightmarish future, where the criminal element rules the streets at night, and the out of control teenagers speak their own slang of ‘Nadsat’.

Alex’s gang carry out horrific attacks, robbing and killing their way through life until Alex is forced to undergo re-education. The novel asks a lot of important questions about civil liberties and what it means to be truly free.

It’s extremely thoughtprovoking, though this orange might leave a nasty taste in your mouth.

I

t is time to keep your eyes to the skies to look out for passing migrants as birds including osprey make their way back to Africa. When it rains watch out for gatherings of feeding swallows, swifts and martins over Ibsley Water as they feed up before heading south. The rain seems to bring the insects down over the water with the birds not far behind.

Although it is known house martins winter in Africa, nobody yet knows exactly where. It is thought that they winter at high altitude as unlike other martin and swallow species they have feathered feet to protect them from the cold.

As some birds leave others are starting to arrive. The great white egret is likely to return any day now from its holidays in France to spend the autumn and winter with us. Duck numbers are also starting to build up with representatives of several species including gadwall, tufted duck, wigeon, mallard and shoveler out on

the water. As usual at this time of year it can be quite difficult to sort many of them out as the usually distinctive drakes have moulted into a somewhat drab ‘eclipse’ plumage, similar to the females. This is thought to be a survival mechanism, making them less conspicuous whilst they moult their flight feathers.

Late summer is a great time to be watching out for this year’s fledglings including kingfisher who are starting to disperse themselves through the reserve, giving you the best chance of seeing one.

On a sunny day take time to search for butterflies including brimstone, peacock, red admiral, small white, large white, green-veined white, silverwashed fritillary, painted lady, gatekeeper, small tortoiseshell and comma. Dragonflies will also be out patrolling their feeding grounds including southern and migrant hawkers.

perspective then why not join us this summer for a walk on the wild side as we head out onto the reserve after dusk to discover the creatures of the night! We will be looking through our moth trap to see who was out flying the night before and then heading out on the reserve to use special detectors to listen in on the secret world of the bats. Arrival of Spring

pring emerged at last from the long cold winter of 2010 and changes came to our little household. At the end of March on a warm sunny day, Mr Oscar decided to go outside and check the weather conditions.

He and his friends had spent a cosy winter in the house, with all the comforts they could wish for, but the weather was warm at this time, and indeed Spring in this particular year was the warmest on record. Mrs Oscar became very agitated that her husband had left her and went around the house looking everywhere for him. It wasn’t long before he returned.

he leading 4-wheel drive go-anywhere brand, is undoubtedly Land Rover. Many rivals have struggled to emulate their performance both on and off-road, their technological excellence and most of all their huge brand following over the years.

With any Land Rover you can tackle inhospitable terrain then turn up at the Ritz and have your car valet-parked, such is their brand strength.

While the latest top-of-the-range Range Rovers stand out ahead of all their competition, this is reflected in premium pricing, both new and used. At the lower end of their model range is the Defender, linear descendant of the original Wilkes Land Rover - a farmyard utility workhorse – the Defender remains iconic in its own right. Sitting snugly above the Defender and embodying many of the features of the most expensive Range Rovers is the Freelander, the subject of our test.

Freelander was originally designed to be small and light to bridge the gap between the agricultural Defender and the svelte big Range Rovers, and to give unbeatable competition to Johnny Foreigner who responded to a perceived gap they saw in the market for small and cheap 4x4s.

For reasons we shan’t go into here, as first sold it wasn’t too successful and the Freelander was swiftly re-thought and then moved upmarket to become Freelander 2 - a bigger, more capable and commodious

4x4 emulating Range Rover configuration but crucially also invading ‘posh estate car’ territory in its body design and price point. Thus it became one of the original ‘crossovers’ and gave the car buyer an alternative proposition of true class. Success followed.

This Freelander has been around for a while now, but visually doesn’t stand out from the crowd. It has to rely upon the badge, colour and excellent detailing to convey quality.

Opening the doors is a different matter. High quality leather adorns commodious seats and doors, with exquisitely fashioned driving controls. The driving position is commandingly high – perfect for Chelsea Tractor drivers! A bunch of switches and buttons remind this is an all-terrain Land Rover with no corners cut. There is plenty of space front and rear, with stowage of various kinds. The boot is not large, but contains ample under-floor stowage and the rear seats are split-fold anyway.

To drive, an absolute hoot.

The latest Ford/Peugeotsourced 2.2 litre diesel really

punches it along aided by a 6-speed auto box with very quick changes. It trickles along in traffic jams, overtaking performance at any speed is outstanding, yes this car is a very able route cruncher. On the rough as you would expect from a Landie the performance is impeccable and it can auto-select the drive type you need for the terrain, but to interfere there are plenty of buttons to play with, the most useful being ‘hill descent control’.

Ground clearance and approach/departure angles are to the professional standard expected of Land Rover, meaning this car will go virtually anywhere – a whole universe better than the competition.

Toys are another matter on the SE version tested. Excellent sound with DAB and external inputs including USB and bluetooth has little in the way of a menu system, while the trip computer really doesn’t tell you very much at all except mileage, oh dear!

Auto lights and wipers are also surprisingly absent, elsewhere a standard fitment. ‘Privacy’ glass in the rear is an optional extra, again surprising in a car of this class. As this vehicle is likely to be driven off-road, the omission of a ‘real’ spare wheel is inexcusable. Sat-nav is absent. However, adding the ‘Tech’ pack rights most of these omissions and also adds larger wheels to increase the external presence of this car.

Negotiate with your dealer on having these features added if you so wish I’d have one, but I would definitely ‘spec’ it up!

Peach Melba Shortcakes Serves 8

Ready in 35 minutes, plus cooling These shortcakes are perfect for a speedy summer dessert.

They take just minutes to make and bake and can be filled with whatever seasonal fruit you have to hand. Here they are filled with a rich and sweet mascarpone cream with juicy peaches and fresh raspberries but a simple dollop of extra thick cream and some sliced strawberries will be just as impressive.

Ingredients: • 175g self-raising flour • 1/2 tsp baking powder • 75g butter, chilled and diced • 55g caster sugar, plus extra for sprinkling • 1 large egg, beaten • 1 tbsp milk

125g mascarpone cheese 2 tbsp icing sugar 6 tbsp single cream 175g fresh raspberries 2 ripe peaches, stoned and sliced

Tip The shortcakes can be made a day in advance and stored in an airtight container.

Fill with the cream and fruit 1-2 hours before serving.

Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4.

Lightly grease a large baking sheet.

Sift the flour and baking powder into a large bowl. Add the diced butter and rub into the flour with your fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar then add the beaten egg and milk and mix to a soft dough.

Knead the dough lightly on a floured surface and roll out to a 1cm thickness. Using an 8cm round cookie cutter stamp out 8 rounds, gently re-rolling the trimmings as necessary.

Place on the prepared baking sheet, prick the top of each round lightly with a fork then sprinkle with a little caster sugar.

Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until risen and pale golden.

Carefully transfer to a wire rack and leave to cool completely.

To make the filling, beat the mascarpone cheese with the icing sugar and cream until smooth. Push half the raspberries through a fine-holed sieve to make a puree.

Slice each shortcake in half horizontally and top the bottom halves with the cream mixture, peach slices and remaining raspberries.

Drizzle over the raspberry puree and top with remaining shortcake halves.

Gardening Grow your own take-away

W

e all know that home-cooked food is better for us than a stream of takeaways, but then we all deserve a little self-indulgence from time to time. So why not save yourself the guilt (and some cash) and grow your own Chinese takeaway right here in your own garden?

No I haven’t turned cookery writer, but you can easily grow some of those tasty and crunchy vegetables that make the backbone of many a Chinese stir-fry... and the great thing is that oriental vegetables do well from late summer sowings, so it’s off to the garden centre (not the takeaway) you go!

Bean sprouts are so easy to grow you could almost do it with your eyes shut. The common types are sprouted mungbeans, and you can either buy packets of seed or a small packet of the beans themselves from your local health food store. They’ll come with easy cultivation instructions and before you know it you’ll have the beginnings of a stir-fry.

Mizuna has got to be one of the most attractive leafy vegetables you can grow. Its green leaves appear soon after

sowing the seed in a pot or in open ground, and they add a great spicy flavour to your stir-fry and also add a zing to salads and sandwiches.

oriental vegetables do well from late summer sowings And where would your Chinese meal be without that delicious Oriental veg, pak-choi. It’s another easy vegetable to grow late in the summer: just sow the seeds in a well-forked soil, water, and wait. Thin out as per the instructions of the seed packet (you can eat the thinnings too), then just pinch off the roots and pop the plants into the wok. Pak-choi also grows well in a container of multi-purpose compost.

Garlic is another essential ingredient. It’s not really the right time of year to plant garlic, but for an unexpected little extra take a few spare cloves and pot them in trays of compost. Keep the compost slightly moist and in a week or two the cloves will start to sprout. What you’re after here aren’t the sprouts though, but the bright green foliage which adds a definitely garlicky flavour to stir-fries and a touch

of colour as well.

Radishes add heat as well as crunch, and there are some lovely oriental varieties such as Mantanhong, which is a British-bred Chinese variety with a superbly crunchy bright red-to-pink inner flesh and spherical white roots – great for colour and texture and with a sweet almost nutty flavour.

Sow in open ground or pots from now until early September for cropping in a few weeks’ time.

Spring onions are another classic stir-fry component. You won’t get a fully mature crop for harvesting this year unless you’re extremely lucky; but what you will get is a superyoung onion that will add both colour and intense flavour to the contents of your wok.

And finally, mushrooms will add a meaty texture to your home-grown vegetable stirfry.

Kits for growing both oyster and field mushrooms are available in many garden centres or by mail order. It’s not always easy to get right, I know, but the challenge is definitely worth it when you have exotic mushrooms growing in your cellar, garden frame, greenhouse, or shed.

Easy Pickings In Your Garden

xpensive lawnmowers and garden tools, not to mention high end barbecues are valuable on the black market, particularly at this time of year. Why would an opportunist thief – and the large majority are - take the trouble to break into your property when there are easy pickings on the outside?

Protect the entrance to your property. If a gate isn’t practical, consider covering the pathways with gravel. Thieves don’t like to announce their presence and the sound of footsteps on gravel could be enough to put them off on the approach.

Choose plants such as holly, pyracantha, berberis, rambling roses and blackthorn, particularly in the areas where it’s easy to access your garden without being seen. Early autumn is an excellent time to plant as the warm soil will help to establish the roots.

Valuable property that is kept outside should be protected in just the same way as other household belongings. Mark your possessions with your postcode and house number.

There are plenty of ways to do this; engraving is a good way of keeping your mark permanent.

Photograph your property so that you can provide a good description should anything ever get stolen and to help aid identification. Ensure that your household insurance policy covers belongings kept in sheds and garages.

A one-off investment to make your garden more secure can

Although it’s impractical to put all your removable items indoors each night, some sensible precautions will protect your barbecue, statues, pot plants and garden furniture.

Basically, anything that is movable, however heavy, is at risk. Out of sight is out of mind, so try to keep items away from public view if possible.

Finally, there’s one thing that many leave outside that is just an open invitation to a thief: a key. If it’s hidden under a mat/ the bin/a plantpot etc it might as well not be hidden at all.

Install a lock box in a discrete place in your garden. It would take a very determined burglar to take the trouble to hack into your lockbox when there are probably easier pickings in neighbouring properties.

hatever excuse you’ve used over the years to avoid learning about it, information technology is here to stay.

These days so many of the things we do are dependent on the internet and in future years our interaction with the online world is set to increase still further. If you’ve never held a mouse in your hand (except for the furry kind), prepare for the world as you know it to change beyond all recognition.

Borrowing is fine if you have a friend or neighbour willing to offer lengthy periods of access to their home computer. If you are visiting a local library to use their equipment, you may need to book in advance.

Tip three: don’t panic!

Computer circuits are used in everything from washing machines to mobile phones these days, so computers should really have lost their ability to scare us. Don’t worry about making mistakes or losing information: most of the errors you will make can be easily corrected.

There are a number of books available from high street newsagents that explain computing in very simple, basic terms, so it may help to buy one of those, particularly if it has a glossary in the back where you can look up any words you don’t understand.

Not just for shopping!

A recent study in America discovered that older people who regularly spent time online were one third less likely to suffer from depression than their peers who did not use the internet. The study, which contacted 3,075 people, found that access to the internet helped with issues of loneliness and social isolation.

Tip One: get hold of a computer Buying a computer doesn’t necessarily mean a huge financial outlay. There are Microsoft-authorised dealers from whom you can buy a “bundle” of refurbished computer equipment (including hard drive, monitor, mouse, keyboard, software and a one year warranty) for under £200.

Tip two: find a good teacher Once you’ve mastered the basic operation of mouse and screen you’ll need someone to show you how everything else works, and at this point you have two options: ask someone you know to teach you, or go for professional help.

TRAINSPOTTING ON THE TRANS- SIBERIAN !

Our seasoned traveller relates her experiences on a trip from Moscow to Beijing on the Trans-Siberian Railway

W

hen my husband (the ever intrepid traveller!) suggested a journey on the Trans-Siberian railway, I had my reservations. Siberia did not exactly strike me as an appealing holiday destination, nor the prospect of being cooped up in a train for a lengthy journey! However my husband won me over by finding an organised trip from Moscow to Beijing on a privately run train known as Tsar’s Gold run by a German company.

There are a number of companies that offer rail journeys on the Trans-Siberian route some going from Moscow to Vladivostock and others down to Bejiing (with a change of train in China).

There are various category of compartment - with the most expensive having en-suite facilities. We The writer enjoying a Siberian Railway museum! went for the standard accommodation and found the compartment perfectly adequate for our needs.

Each carriage has an attendant and is equipped with adequate toilets and surprisingly spacious shower facilities. The restaurant cars provided an abundance of nutritious food with the option of a glass of vodka after every meal!!

The trip started with a tour of Moscow - including Red Square and of course the Kremlin.

The interior of the Kremlin, no longer the seat of the government, is vast and is a major tourist attraction. Its 3 beautiful churches with their classic, onion shaped domes or cupolas in glistening gold are a spectacular sight.

And so to the train to embark on our adventure with even a band playing to welcome us on board!! Although this was a 15 day holiday, six of the nights were spent in comfortable hotels and there were stops every day for excellent guided tours of the sights en route to Bejiing.

Our first port of Cathedral in Kazan the Tatar capital call after Moscow was beautiful Kazan, also with its Kremlin or fortification containing traditional churches with golden orbs and a stunning modern mosque.

Moving into Siberia with its forests

Travelling by the side of Lake Baikal

of birch trees, we visited commemoration sites for victims of Stalin’s purges and the site where the last Tsar Nicholas 2nd and his family were murdered with a beautiful church now standing on the site in honour of their memory - all very poignant. My image of Siberia as a cold desolate place dissipated when we arrived at Lake Baikal - a vast freshwater lake of breathtaking beauty. It was time for a barbecue here and some passengers braved the waters for a quick dip.

Then on to elegant Irkutsk the capital of East Siberia with its many traditional wooden houses and Art Nouveau architecture. We had the opportunity to have Museum of Siberian Architecture lunch with a family in their Irkutsk dacha. These are the weekend and holiday homes, constructed of wood, that are so popular with the locals, providing the opportunity to get away from the industrial towns and enjoy the country air.

Next stop was Mongolia and its capital Ulan Bator which is developing at a fast pace due to its wealth of copper and other minerals but traffic congestion is now a major problem. Far more enthralling was the beauty of the Mongolian countryside and learning about the nomadic lifestyle of some of the population in their distinctive yurts or tented households. We were treated to Mongolian hospitality sampling their food and watching displays of wrestling, archery and horsemanship.

Nomads And finally on to the of the Mongolian Steppes next train for the journey into China. What a contrast between rural China, glimpsed from the train window, with workers tending the fields, using carts drawn by donkeys, amidst dramatic scenery of hills and gorges and then the sight of the megalopolis of Beijing. with its wealth of high rise commercial buildings and exciting modern architectural structures. Our visit to the vast forbidden city home to the emperors, was fascinating and it was interesting to see the large crowds queuing to visit Mao’s mausoleum in Tinnamen Square.

A highlight for me was climbing a steep stretch of the Great Wall, quite a feat considering the temperature!!This was an awesome, journey along this vast railway network.

Portrait of a Dorset Artist Sally Pinhey lives in Upwey, near Weymouth and was drawn to art as she wanted a career that would allow her to bring up her young family She is now considered to be one of the foremost botanical artists in the United Kingdom and five years after becoming a professional artist Sally was elected a full member of the Association of Illustrators in 1990.

“It was the most adaptable thing I could do with small children and moving every few years for my husband’s work,” she says. Sally adds that painting does not run in her family although her grandfather was a ship designer.

Although she has now made her home in Dorset and teaches both at her home studio, at Kingston Maurward College and The Kingcombe Centre, Sally enjoys travelling, which provides much inspiration. One of her career highlights was spending three years in Italy. “Everything was a joy to paint, both plants and ancient classical ruins were my main subjects, and exhibitions were well attended,” she recalls. “I sold everything I painted.”

Since that time five books have been published that have been entirely illustrated by Sally. “The fifth ‘The Botanical Illustrator’s Handbook’ was launched

by Crowood Press in July.”

Watercolours are her medium of choice and with a readily recognizable style of translucent washes to shape a subject, followed by more detailed overpainting Sally has sold thousands of paintings.

uring the year to September 2013, Citizens Advice Bureaux in England and Wales dealt with 7,015 new debt problems every working day. This is the rather startling figure issued by financial capability organisation, The Money Charity, and it illustrates just how people in the UK are struggling to keep on top of money issues.

Where to go for reliable advice The internet provides a valuable source of information and advice on debt and how to deal with it, but sometimes it can be more reassuring to sit down with a financial expert and let them explain the solutions available to you in person.

The Citizens Advice service is the obvious choice for debt help, with over 3,300 bureaux around England and Wales. The charity offers free independent advice to all, in confidence, at high street locations including dedicated offices, doctors’ surgeries, courts, and even prisons.

They also provide their services via email, the internet and telephone if preferred.

An excellent online source of information is the StepChange Debt Charity, which you may know under its former title of the Consumer Credit Counselling Service. They provide information and advice about all aspects of debt, including tips to avoid it, dealing with it effectively, and what to do if you are overwhelmed by money worries.

Reasons for getting into debt

StepChange states that “Overspending is not the main cause of debt problems” and accounts for only 10% of the cases they deal with. So what are the main causes? Well, they could occur for a number of reasons: • Unexpected redundancy, job loss or reduced hours • A life event, such as divorce or separation • Injury or illness • Reduced income • Failure to budget effectively In recent years, job losses and redundancies have accounted for many of the debt problems in this country. The loss of income may have been sudden, and coupled with spiralling living costs, debt can become unavoidable.

What are the best ways to tackle debt?

This largely depends on the amount and type of debt concerned. There are ways to quickly reduce household expenses and interest charges though, so think about switching your energy supplier if you aren’t locked into a deal, and move all credit card debt onto a 0% or low interest card if you can.

Below are some easy things

to do that will help gain control over your finances: • Make a detailed list of all household income and expenditure, including items such as birthday and Christmas presents • Cancel all unnecessary direct debits and standing orders, and cut back on non-essential spending • Once your outgoings have been reduced or consolidated, make a strict budget to include basic household and living costs • Consider keeping only one credit card, which should be used purely for emergencies

But what if it’s already too late?

There are actions you can take as a last resort, such as Individual Voluntary Arrangements, Administration Orders, or declaring bankruptcy. These are all big steps, however, and you need to take professional advice before making such a decision.

An important consideration in all this is choosing the right people to help you. You need to approach a charity or other non-profit organisation with counsellors who are paid to help you, rather than make money from you.

1st ‘Love Your Air Ambulance’ month

launched by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance.

ampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance is calling upon the people of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to start making preparations for their inaugural ‘Love Your Air Ambulance Month’ in October.

A little more than £6 would keep the Air Ambulance flying for a minute, £383 would keep it flying for an hour and £4,600 would keep it flying for a whole day. Bearing in mind that the Air Ambulance can reach anywhere within Hampshire within just 5 minutes, and the Isle of Wight within 20 minutes, the smallest donation can make a difference .

With this in mind, the charity is appealing to local companies to get behind the campaign and to help to keep the Air Ambulance flying and saving lives for as many minutes as possible.

Individuals are encouraged to step forward and stand as company ‘Ambassadors’ for the month, spurring on their colleagues to do something worthwhile and to help a life saving service. A certificate will be presented to the company that manages to raise the most money in support of ‘Love Your Air Ambulance Month’.

Getting involved could be as simple as organising an office fancy dress day or cake sale, or even just having a collection pot in reception.

However, if local businesses are looking for inspiration, the charity has plenty of fundraising ideas, along with fundraising packs and all the information needed to promote Love Your Air Ambulance Month to friends and colleagues. Ringwood Students venture overseas as Lions International Ambassadors

hree talented Ringwood Students have an amazing opportunity to travel to India, America and Finland as International Ambassadors for the town of Ringwood as part of this year’s Lions Youth Camp & Exchange Program. Elizabeth Treble, Nicole Mumford-Jobaire, and Shona Graham are getting ready to set off on a trip of a lifetime to experience living with a Lions family in a different country this summer courtesy of the Lions Clubs International Youth Camp & Exchange Program. All three students will spend approximately 2-3 weeks experiencing what life is like in a different country and then at least a further week mixing with other students from around the World at the International Youth Camp operating in each country.

Pictured are Elizabeth Treble and Nicole Mumford-Jobaire holding the bannerettes for Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Club that they will take with them to pass on to their International Hosts. All of the food, accommodation costs and travel whilst in their chosen country will be paid for by Lion Clubs International. Lion President Geoff Kay commented that “this is a very exciting opportunity for 3 of our brightest students to experience the life and culture of a different country and to make lifelong friendships with international students from around the globe”.

The 3 students were carefully selected by Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Club earlier this year, and who are now getting ready to embark on their trip of a lifetime. Ringwood & Fordingbridge Lions Club are part of Lions Clubs International, one of the largest global service organisations in the world with approximately 1.37 million men and women members in 206 different countries. One of the principal aims of Lions Clubs International is to create and foster a spirit of understanding among the peoples of the world. This is in part achieved through supporting local applications

for their Youth Camp & Exchange Program which has been in operation since 1961.

Barrington Boost for hard of hearing

imborne and Ferndown Lions Club have given the Barrington Centre, Ferndown a donation to pay for a new hearing loop for the theatre main hall.

This new version of an induction loop, made by Ampertronics of Nottingham, enables people with hearing aids to hear, clearly, the sound they want with no back-

ground noise. It works by creating a magnetic field direct from the sound source which can be picked up by the hearing aid coil.

Office manager Rosemary Handscomb said that the new loop is already in operation and is a big improvement on the old system.

There is a plaque at the theatre to record the donation.
