A8 ROUNDABOUT the VILLAGES Community Page Your Local Police Update I want to start by raising Halloween and Bonfire night. These were both exceptionally busy evenings for us, especially Halloween which can be traumatic for many who call us for support and action. It is a real test of the concept of looking to all communities to have a balance of respect and tolerance, as the nature and extent of the ASB is much higher than normal. Due to the increase in demand, the majority of your local officers worked a late shift, and in one area I authorised a dispersal order so that those committing ASB could be removed from the area and prevented from returning for a suitable period. During this evening your local officers worked incredibly hard to minimise disorder. I recently discussed some crime figures and trends with colleagues within the Community Safety Partnership. This is historically how success in policing has been defined, but we recognise that long-term policing is about getting upstream and ‘Problem Solving’. As well as targeted patrols to disrupt offenders and collect intelligence on them, your local officers are normally tasked with engaging with a variety of people and communities to identify ‘Local Priorities’. Then, via a range of mechanisms with partners, we combine information, intelligence and tactics and tackle the early causes of crime and disorder. So, if there’s an opportunity for you to contribute to that process, please take it! Some of the times and places where you can access your local team are on our website: https://leics.police.uk/local-policing Christmas is approaching fast, and with it sadly comes the risk of Burglaries. There are far, far fewer than there used to be, but there is normally a ‘seasonal rise’ now. Consequently I’d like to issue some simple crime prevention advice so that you can help us help you. We will target offenders as ever, and you can take some simple steps to reduce the risk of you becoming a victim. These include:

   

Having solid locks on doors and making sure they are used/locked when you’re out or gone to bed. A mortice lock costs about £20 and is a simple and effective measure that only takes around an hour to fit. Use a timer-switch when you’re out or away so that a light comes on to make it look like there is someone at home Shut ground floor windows when you go to bed, and do not leave ladders or gardens chairs available so that they can be stacked for someone to be able to reach the upstairs windows. Ask your neighbours to be vigilant and if they spot anything suspicious around your property, get them to call us on 999 and remember to do the same for them.

I would also like to take the opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Inspector Dan Eveleigh, Hinckley and Blaby Neighbourhood Policing Commander

New Venture Helps Small Businesses in Leicestershire

A Newbold Verdon man has launched a new venture aimed at helping small businesses in the area to connect online. After nearly 20 years in marketing and communications, John Cooper has set up „it‟seeze Leicester,‟ a website design company. John said, “I know as well as anyone how tough the marketplace can be for a start-up business, so I wanted to do something that I would enjoy as well as something that could benefit the local business community." John‟s new business venture was founded as a result of the research he did with small businesses in the local area. “I was staggered to learn that most companies don‟t have a website and of those that do, the majority are unhappy with the service or experience ongoing problems with their site.” Research also revealed that on the whole small businesses simply don‟t know how to source an effective website. The world of technology and the ever-changing internet can be frightening prospect for small business owners when looking to have a web presence. John works with a team of expert web designers and developers. “Our websites are easy to use, mobile-friendly and enable small businesses to have a professionally designed website at an affordable price." “I hope to be able to use my previous business experience to help local businesses overcome their challenges or fears about websites and I promise only to speak a language they understand. . . after all, that‟s why the business is called „it‟seeze‟ pronounced as “it‟s easy”.

A ROUNDABOUT the VILLAGES Advertorial Martin & Co (Hinckley)

From October 2015 there has been quite a few changes to legislation regarding the private rental sector. Below is a short summary and for further details please call Steve or Lee at Martin & Co on 01455 636349. EPC regulations From April 2016 Landlords of residential properties will not be able to unreasonably refuse requests from their tenants for consent to energy efficient improvements, where financial support is available, such as the Green Deal and/or the Energy Company Obligation (ECO). Following this, from April 2018 private rented properties must be brought up to a minimum energy efficiency rating of “E”. All new tenancies must meet this standard. This provision will make it unlawful to rent out a house or business premise that does not reach this minimum standard. From April 2020 no property can continue to be let that has an energy efficiency rating greater than an “E”. Smoke Alarms On October 1st 2015 a new law commenced requiring Landlords to supply smoke alarms for every floor of the rental property. These must be tested at the start of every new tenancy. Wood Burning Stove Wood burning stoves need to be installed by a qualified HETAS engineer or should be subject to building regulation approval. If the Landlord has installed it himself and there is not certification in place, then they should be checked before Tenants move in. Legionella Bacteria and Risk Assessment Full details may be found at www.hse.gov.uk/legionnaires Deregulation Act 2015 S35 removes the requirement that a S21 notice must expire on the last day of the tenancy. S36 notice cannot be given during the first four months of a tenancy. It also gives the S21 notice a shelf life of six months. S40 Landlords cannot serve notice if a maintenance issue has been reported to the council and an enforcement notice issued. A S21 cannot be re-issued for six months after an enforcement notice repair.

A ROUNDABOUT the VILLAGES Charity Article Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance (DLRAA) Give your Air Ambulance the gift of music this Christmas

While you’re tucking into your turkey this Christmas Derbyshire, Leicestershire & Rutland Air Ambulance will be working as usual, helping to save lives even during the festive season. The air ambulance crew works 365 days a year to provide lifesaving support even when everyone else is enjoying a day off. Last year DLRAA went to 73 missions in December alone, with several on Christmas Day itself. Winter is a busy season due to the icy roads and poor weather, and the holiday period is even busier as everyone travels home. This year the charity is asking for supporters to contact us with their suggestions for a Christmas song for the crew, so they have something festive to listen to between missions. The best songs suggested will be added to a special online DLRAA playlist so the crew and all our supporters can listen over Christmas. To suggest a song for the playlist, send us a message on Twitter @WNDLRAirAmb, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/WNDLRAirAmb, or please email us at enquiries@theairambulanceservice.org.uk with the subject line Christmas playlist. If you would like to help keep your local air ambulance in the skies above you this Christmas, you can find out more about our Christmas Appeal by visiting our website www.theairambulanceservice.org.uk/ChristmasAppeal or by calling us on 08454 130999. A ROUNDABOUT the VILLAGES Community Page Youth Champion and Fairtrade Forum Member

Welcome to my latest column here in Roundabout the Villages! I was honoured recently to attend two very special events at my old High School, Heathfield Academy. It will soon change, as it joins forces with William Bradford Academy (which was my secondary school, back when it was Earl Shilton Community College) to become The Heath Lane Academy. So to mark the end of Heathfield in its present form, a reunion was organised which saw old boys and girls from across the decades gather to look around the school. The second event was a special tea attended by a couple of former pupils representing each decade that Heathfield has been open (since the 30’s). I represented the 90’s. On a pupil-led tour around the school, I was able to see my old tutor room. It did make me feel a bit old, I have to say. Heathfield will be much missed, but I wish the new Heath Lane Academy well for the future. I recently attended the Fairtrade Foundation’s National Supporters Conference, held at one of the Kings College campuses in the city. It was a day of speeches, breakout sessions and Fairtrade market stalls. I attended sessions on ‘Engaging with schools on Fairtrade’ and ‘Fairtrade and sustainability.’ It was great to have a chance to network with so many Fairtrade campaigners from across the country. By buying products with the official Fairtrade label on them we ensure that the original farmer/grower in the Developing World gets paid a fairer wage and gets to live and work in better conditions. CHARITY APPEALS FOR VOLUNTEERS TO IMPROVE THE LIVES OF LONELY OLDER PEOPLE IN HINCKLEY Contact the Elderly, the charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is urgently appealing for volunteers living in Hinckley to spare just a few hours a month to help run its local tea parties - and enjoy a cuppa and a cake themselves! The charity aims to relieve the acute loneliness of isolated older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone, by organising free monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups within local communities – providing a regular and vital friendship link every month. Each older guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver, and is taken to a volunteer host‟s home, where they join a small group for tea, chat and companionship. Contact the Elderly runs a popular group in Hinckley but in order to ensure that it continues to thrive, the charity is making an appeal for more coordinators who would be able to help organise the tea parties and liaise with the older guests and volunteers to ensure everything runs smoothly every month. Furthermore, the coordinator must be able to drive one or two older guests to the tea parties one Sunday a month, or host an afternoon tea party once or twice a year. Contact the Elderly‟s Midlands and North West Development Officer, Prabina Lord said: “The charity is committed to offering a lifeline of friendship to the oldest and loneliest people, but our attempts to continue to provide this lifeline for older people in Hinckley have hit a bit of a stumbling block due to a real shortage of local volunteers to help run the group. Being a driver requires a commitment of just a couple of hours once a month, a host just a few hours once or twice a year, and the coordinator role only involves a little extra regular commitment each month in addition to the tea party outings which everyone really enjoys! So I‟m calling for anyone who is interested in giving something back to their community to please get in touch with me as soon as possible.” Hinckley residents interested in volunteering for Contact the Elderly can contact Prabina Lord, Midlands and North West on 0161 460 2950 or email prabina.lord@contact-the-elderly.org.uk

Testimonials Received Advert on Page 10 I recently needed an eye check. Having seen Optical People had recently opened in Sapcote I made an appointment. They are in a good location with free onsite parking and a great kids gaming area. From booking the appointment, to the eye test and then choosing my new glasses from the hundreds of frames to choose from, the process was a real pleasure. I was made to feel really welcome and I am delighted with my lovely new glasses and better vision. I can highly recommend Ravi and his team at Optical People. Debbie Heron. Advert on Pages 16 & 17 Just wanted to let you know we went in to Buttercream Tearoom yesterday and had our wonderful afternoon tea. The food was gorgeous and really generous. Cathy is a great baker and Lee a fab host. We took our 13 month old along and they were great with her. Thanks so much again to Martin & Co for providing the prize, we were so full we didn't have dinner that night. Lynda Gilmour. Wordsearch Winner August September 2015
