Anti-drugs workshop in Cuddalore, TN

An anti-drugs awareness workshop-cum-rally was held for first-year college students by RC Cuddalore Coastal City, RID 2981, with the help of the police department and other Rotary clubs.

Actor Thamu, also a social activist, addressed the students at the Arignar Anna playground. He warned them on mobile phone addiction that would ruin their lives, and urged the youth to spend time productively. The event

was held with the support of other distrct clubs and the police department. DG S Baskaran, PDG Piraiyon, district SPR Rajaram, collector Sibi Adhithya and municipality commissioner S Anu spoke on the occasion.

Ainstalled at a government school by RC Coimbatore Monarks, RID 3201, to provide clean drinking water to students and teachers. A team from Xylem Watermark conducted a session that dwelt on access to clean water for a healthy life.

AS Venkatesh was chosen by RI President Stephanie Urchick as RIPR to

District 3300 conference held in Penang, Malaysia. He addressed the assembled Rotarians on ‘the magic of Rotary’.

At another session, he talked about why Rotarians should donate to The Rotary Foundation and make

it their organisation of choice for giving.

PRID Kamal Sanghvi was another prominent speaker invited from India.

DGN Ravishankar Dakoju and his wife Paola, who have pledged a donation of $14 million to TRF, were also invited to attend the conference. Dakoju spoke on why he chose to donate such a huge sum to TRF. Spelling out his simple and

down-to-earth philosophy of giving, he said that as people who had taken so much from both the community and Planet Earth, they had chosen to give back, and share their good fortune with others.

RIDE Jennifer Scott also conducted training of her region’s leaders on the sidelines of the conference. Venkatesh addressed the training session on the importance of membership.

Cancer detection camp in Mumbai

Around 160 underprivileged women were screened at a breast cancer and anaemia detection camp conducted jointly by RCs Mumbai Divas and Mumbai Rising Star, RID 3141, at the SWES School, Santacruz.

Prior to the camp, Rotarians explained to them the importance of breast screening. While club member Ram Kotak supported the cancer detection camp, Dr Neelima Inaamdar helped at the anaemia camp. The project cost `75,000.

Bicycles for rural students

RC Mira Road, RID 3141, distributed 50 bicycles to students who walk long distances to school, helping improve access to education. The project, supported by Fab Tech, aims to reduce travel time and boost attendance.

At a networking event in which over 250 members from 25 Tamil Nadu chapters of Rotary Means Business Fellowship (RMBF) met in Coimbatore, RIDE M Muruganandam praised the RMBians for showcasing their diverse industries, business expertise and celebrating the spirit of enterprise among Rotarians in the state. The business conclave titled Vetkai (aspiration in Tamil) saw entrepreneurs, innovators and thought leaders from across Tamil Nadu and beyond sharing notes for a ‘win-win strategy’. He expressed his appreciation of TN chapter coordinator John Kennedy, event coordinator Premanand, and the organising team for conducting a “purposedriven business conclave.”

Among the 250 people screened at the eye testing and surgery camp at the Dr Vinothini Eye Care Clinic, 32 were identified for surgery and all expenses will be met by the club. The eye camp is one of the regular projects of the club boosting its public image in the town.

RC Agra’s Earth Day rally creates a buzz

Acycle-cum-foot rally was conducted to mark the 55th Earth Day (April 22) by RC Agra, RID 3110, to create awareness on ‘Go Green’ lifestyle among the residents, traders, tourists and shopkeepers. The march by Rotarians and other volunteers started from the Lopamudra Vidya Mandir, Shilpgram, and ended at the Dussehra Ghat, with

Happiness workshop

In a lecture titled ‘Happiness workshop,’ Dr Vishal Sinha, renowned psychiatrist, gave a stimulating talk on the science and psychology of staying happy amidst life’s challenges. His insightful session inspired the club members to explore fresh perspectives on emotional wellbeing for a balanced life.

Dr Sinha pointed out the human brain is naturally wired to perceive situations with a negative bias, “a survival mechanism designed to prepare us mentally for challenges. But this tendency often works against our emotional health.” He emphasised that by changing the thought patterns and embracing

Blood donation camp at Sunam

Around80 teachers attended a nutrition awareness session conducted by RC Erode Thindal, RID 3203, with the support of the Interact Club of URC Palaniammal Matric Higher Secondary School.

Dr Revathy Sadasivam, fertility consultant at the Genesis IVF Centre, Erode, and Dr Prem Raj, orthopaedic surgeon, spoke in detail about some of the gynaecological and orthopaedic issues faced by teachers in their professional career.

Aone-day RYLA was organised by RC Nanganallur Elite, RID 3234, for Interactors of The Hindu Colony Chellammmal Vidyalaya and DAV Baba School to mark the birth anniversary of Rotary founder Paul Harris on April 19.

It was an eventful day for 140 students who were inspired by motivational speeches, life skill sessions and a talent demonstration. District Interact RYLA chairperson Jayashri Raghunathan spoke on the event’s importance in a student’s life and encouraged them to make the best use of multiple sessions. She also urged the students to involve themselves in organising such activities to hone their diverse skills.

Janani Rex, a Rotarian, gave a talk on ‘Getting the thinking right’ in which she dwelt on the need to develop the right attitude with situational awareness to be successful in life. Tamil scholar and memory expert Kalai Chezhian inspired the students with his multitasking ability as he carved a saint Thiruvalluvar statue in a soap and played chess with a student at the same time, eventually winning the game.

Coastal Karnataka fare in Hubballi

Karnataka’s rich coastal heritage was celebrated in a three-day mega trade and coastal fare titled Karavali Utsava by RC Hubli Mid Town, RID 3170, in partnership with their Inner Wheel members.

It was a grand cultural feast on all three days (May 1–3) as club president Dinesh Shetty, Inner Wheel Club of Hubli Mid Town

president Shilpa Shetty, club secretaries Praveen Bhansali, Shailaja Bagade, along with event heads Nagaraj Naik and Sashimangala Aithal, had ensured that every detail was meticulously planned and executed without any hitch.

Each day featured dance and musical performances such as Mandarthi Mahatme (religious stories of Mangaluru region);

Yakshagana by Alvas Students from Moodabidri (a folk theatre form); Pilli Vesha (tiger dance); a magic show by Kudrolli Ganesh; and Chendi rendition (coastal drumbeats). “Karavali Utsava brought

traditions of coastal belt to the heart of Hubballi,” said Praveen Bhansali, secretary, RC Hubli Mid Town.

The vast array of exhibition stalls displayed coastal food menus, ethnic clothing, imitation jewellery, eco-friendly kitchenware, auto ancillaries, organic mangoes and much more. Karnataka Assembly speaker UT Khader, Legislative Council chairman Basavaraj Horatti, Union minister Prahlad Joshi and state minister Santosh Lad visited in Hubballi.

More than 30,000 people visited the stalls and pavilions on all three days, as the event also boosted the Rotary brand image in the region. “The festival was a vibrant fusion of tradition, community and celebration, setting a new benchmark for such cultural events in North Karnatka,” said Bhansali.

Rotary Math Labs in Bengaluru schools

With the aim to enable students to learn maths in an enjoyable manner, RC Bangalore Indiranagar, RID 3192, in partnership with ThinkEdge has set up Maths Labs at four schools in the city and one in Mangaluru.

In a quiet village of Nada, Belthangady taluk in Mangaluru, Yakub Koyyur, a maths teacher from the Government High School, Nada, set up Maths World in Feb 2015. This math lab had interactive models and charts which helped students to grasp tough concepts through hands-on learning.
