Introduction “Alive and Kicking – a covid free community” is a hybrid (physical and virtual) initiative by the Rotaract Club and the Rotary Club of Bwebajja that is focused on spreading awareness on Corona virus disease. Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) is an infectious disease of humans caused by a coronavirus newly discovered in 2019 – SARS-CoV-2. COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic and has spread around the world including Uganda, where the current positive case number is reported at 88,194 and 2,164 deaths as of 14th July2021 according to Uganda Ministry of Health following the discovery of the first case in March 2020. The project is dubbed Alive and Kicking to connote a desirable healthy community that is free of covid-19 and other hygiene related and respiratory diseases, whose dwellers are able to perform their day-to-day economic activities to earn a decent livelihood. The project was executed at the helm of second wave of the corona pandemic that presented rare symptoms that were hardly understood by the community. It is against this background that the hybrid project concept was conceived after realizing that the main reason why Covid-19 was claiming many lives globally is because many people lacked the requisite information on prevention and control of the deadly pandemic. Alive and Kicking focuses on capacity building that ranges from how COVID-19 is transmitted, its symptoms and prevention measures, and the importance of seeking medical advice as the symptoms arise. The aim of the project is not only to reduce the number of cases but also to spread them over time, avoiding congestion in emergency and intensive care units. Alive and Kicking was launched on 1st July 2021 with an open space covid-19 awareness campaign at Kawuku market and subsequent online campaigns that run for seven consecutive days till 7th July 2021.

Project Strategy Alive and Kicking project is part of the concerted national effort to prevent and respond to the covid-19 pandemic while strengthening awareness about the pandemic. The project mainly focused on behavior change as a strategy to mitigate the prevalence of the corona virus disease keeping in mind that behaviour change is not an overnight process but rather a day-to-day process which involves collective responsibility. For practicality, the project team organized a physical campaign that targeted people working in crowded areas and an online campaign extended the scope of beneficiaries to the internet community that is mainly made of youths and social elites. Through this strategy, the project implementors conducted mass education on prevention and control measures of COVID-19 in overly crowded

places like community markets. The facilitation was conducted by health practioners, and volunteers who had received training on Covid-19 signs and symptoms, preventive and control measures, the importance of seeking medical advice, and case management at household. This was also to ensure containment, including active surveillance, early detection, isolation and case management, contact tracing and prevention of the spread. As a matter of sustainability, the project team used printed material like banners, posters, pamphlets, and flyers that were visibly placed all over the market and also practically demonstrated the recommended practices on covid-19 prevention in short videos that were shared on the implementing Clubs’ different social media platforms.

Implementing organisations The online project was championed by Rotaract Club of Bwebajja, a voluntary organization of professional youths that have devoted their resources in form of time, skills and finances towards humanitarian service in partnership with the Rotary Club of Bwebajja, a voluntary organization of professionals, community and business leaders in Uganda with a common goal of making this world a better place through impactful community service projects. Both organisations are immensely engaged in humanitarian activities through impactful community service projects that have positively impacted on the lives of tens of thousands of people living within Uganda and internationally. Project activities

Alive and Kicking is a combination of physical and virtual activities that advocated for a safe and covid free community both locally and internationally through physical and online sensitization campaigns accompanied with donations of physical hygiene related materials, reflector jackets and masks. The following activities comprised the Alive and kicking project:

1. Donation of masks:

The project team donated 50 masks branded with Rotary logos. The donation kick started a prompt enforcement of masking as a preventive measure at all times. Only a few were lucky to receive a piece of the Rotary branded masks and the rest were encouraged to endeavour to gain access to any type of mask.

2. Donation of hand washing facilities: The project team educated the beneficiaries that washing hands with running water and soap frequently for at least 20 seconds is a tested way of preventing the spread of the Corona virus. To ensure compliance, 3 units of hand washing facilities were donated to the market vendors. The vendors were encouraged to make use of the hand washing facilities to control the spread the deadly corona virus.

3. Donation of reflector jackets. In an effort to spread the corona virus awareness campaign, 50 reflector jackets branded with corona virus awareness and spread control messages were donated to 50 boda-boda cyclists. Given the huge number of people that interact with the boda-boda cyclists in a quest for their services, the awareness message shall definitely travel far and wide. Also, these jackets shall curb on the prevalent road carnage incidences involving boda-boda cyclists given the fact that they increase on their visibility while on the road. 4. Sensitization: Information was shared to both the physical and online target beneficiaries on the prevention and control measures of the deadly pandemic. This information was relayed verbally to the physical beneficiaries with illustrations. Flyers, short clips were posted on social media platforms to engage the online beneficiaries as well. The sensitization campaign enlightened the beneficiaries on the various ways through which the virus is spread. These are: • Face-to-face contact with a confirmed case within 1 meter and for more than 15 minutes. • Direct physical contact with a confirmed case. • Direct care for a patient with confirmed Covid-19 disease without using proper personal protective equipment. The sensitization exercise brought forth other preventive and control measures that need to be adhered to in order to minimize the spread of the corona virus disease. Below are the measures: Use of an alcohol-based sterilizer: When attached to human hands, the corona virus can live for 10 minutes, so the use of an alcohol-based sterilizer to wash hands is enough to kill it. Touching of objects: The project team explained to the beneficiaries that Corona virus does not float in air, but sticks to objects and therefore transmission is not through the air. The virus attaches on surfaces and has the capability to survive for a while, for instance it can live for 12 hours when on a metallic surface. The people were then advised to regularly clean surfaces with water and soap or an alcohol-based sanitizer to kill the virus before it spreads. Avoid close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness. The dwellers were encouraged to maintain at least 2 metres (5 feet) distance between themselves and anyone who is coughing or sneezing repeatedly. Washing clothes: When attached to cloth, the corona virus can live for 9 hours, so washing clothes or drying it in the sun for 2 hours is enough to kill the virus. ALIVE & KICKING PROJECT REPORT

09

Avoid cold environment and foods: Areas of 26-27°C do not facilitate the survival of the virus, so dwellers were encouraged to drink hot water, eat hot foods and bask in the sun as regular precautions against the virus. Gargling: Gargling with warm water and salt will kill the corona virus around the pharynx preventing it from entering the lungs. Obey national and state directives. The team requested the community to cancel and avoid large gatherings including places of worship, social and sporting events.

Implementation strategy The implementation of the project was spread across a period of one week, with each day of the week have a theme focused on covid-19 awareness, prevention and mindset change. The online population

was invited to make posts on their different social media platforms in line with the day’s theme and share with their followers in order to make far reaching impact. Below were the days’ themes:

This was the official launch of the project. It was commemorated with donations of 3 hand washing facilities, 50 branded masks and 50 reflectors jackets with an open space awareness campaign about covid-19 at Kawuku market. The event also had a virtual aspect that facilitated participation from over 100 people from 18 Rotary and Rotaract Clubs in Uganda. The launch was officiated by the District Rotaract Representative of Rotary District 9214, Rtr. Noah Nyabwana from the Rotaract Club of Mengo.

One this day, the online population was invited to share their hero who has made substantial sacrifice towards the fight against covid-19. This could be a medical practioners, civil servant, relative or hospital that has gone over and above to curtail the spread of the coronal virus disease.

With this theme, it was about manifesting gratitude for all the good that has happened in one’s life. After realizing how much good you have received over the years, one was invited to transfer the love to another person through an act of kindness thus the pay it forward theme.

This theme was about fostering a positive mindset and attitude within the population in the midst of the negative energy characterized by sickness and death caused by covid-19. The online population was invited to share positive messages of motivation and encouragement to rekindle the lost hope in the lives of the victims, their family and friends.

This theme was about inciting the general public to observe the call from both medial officers and the government to wear masks always. 2 Videos and flyers were produced to send out this message. The online population was invited to share positive messages about the importance of wearing masks to rekindle the lost hope in the lives of the victims, their family and friends. ALIVE & KICKING PROJECT REPORT

Impact Alive and Kicking project implementation has had evident impact in the community especially regarding behaviour change. The project exuded knowledge and information that changed the perception the people had about the corona virus later on attracting attention from media power house New Vision Uganda that posted the story behind the project on newspaper online platform (see link: https://www.newvision.co.ug/articledetails/108397). The project further demystified the myths and lies the community had about the corona virus disease often causing immense anxiety and depression in some cases. This information reduced on the anxiety within the population after realizing that the spread of the corona virus disease can be easily controlled and that

covid-19 is not a death sentence. This has dispelled misinformation while promoting health and medical guidelines set by the Ministry of Health fostering lively community with minimal stress and depression. The project also promoted the visibility of Rotary and its humanitarian works in the eyes of the public placing it as a people focused organisation with timely humanitarian interventions in the communities. The Rotary fraternity shall capitalize on this to garner support from community organisation and also engage in joint ventures with the community to execute bigger community service projects in the future that shall ultimately change the lives of many. Monitoring and evaluation

Challenges

The project team instated an active community policing team that shall encourage and sometimes enforce social distancing, strict adheres to mask wearing and all the other control measures in the Kawuku market community. The community policing team shall have task of ensuring that the handwashing facilities are functional and are put to use. The success of this project shall hinge entirely on the reduced number of positive cases going forward in the local community, the reduction on the number of mental cases attributed to depression and stress related to covid-19 and its effects, positive attitude towards covid-19 keeping in mind that it is not a death sentence and can be easily avoided if the right measures are followed.

The execution of this project did not pass without any challenges. Below are the notable challenges encountered during execution: Limited funding: The implementing organisation lacked the adequate funding to make adequate donations of masks, sanitizers, hand washing facilities and other preventive materials. This is because many of the volunteers are under lock down without any income and thus cannot afford to make substantial financial support to such humanitarian efforts. Social distance enforcement: Enforcing social distance while executing the open space physical awareness campaign was no mean feat. The dwellers do not take social distancing seriously and were often seen breaking the 2-metre social distance rule. They were always reminded to keep a safe social distance to curtail the spread of the corona virus distance. Transportation: Amidst the national lockdown with restricted movement of vehicles and people, transporting volunteers and project materials to the project venue turned out expensive. This is because there are only few vehicles permitted to move which subsequently hiked the costs of hire. Many guardians are reluctantly sending the children under their care to crowdy places like markets making them susceptible to catching the virus since they are not careful enough to adhere to the strict control measures.

Project plans

Alive and kicking covid awareness campaign ignited a sense of responsibility within the population to act within their means to help those in their communities combat the spread of the covid-19 through sharing facts about the disease and practical prevention and control measures. On that note, the Alive and kicking awareness campaign is to remain in force to continue reminding everyone of their inherent responsible to

save the lives of those they are living with through adherence to preventive measures, and fostering a positive attitude and mindset until the Covid-19 war is won. The project is to be a significant part of the concerted fight against the deadly virus consolidating on the successes presented by other campaigns that have been implemented by Government of Uganda through Ministry of Health and other community Organisations.

Appreciation. Gratitude is extended to all the generous and big-hearted Rotarians, Rotaractors and wellwishers that financially supported the Alive and Kicking project. Appreciation also goes to District Governor Young Kimaro and District Rotaract Representative Noah Nyabwana for their active participation in the Project and moral support. All participants that committed time and skills towards the execution of the Project at the launch held at Kawuku Market, humanity owes you. A big thank you goes

to all those that actively participated in the online awareness campaign, diligently following the online project themes and sharing information to their followers on the different social media platforms. Utmost appreciation also goes to all individuals that applauded this idea, forwarded suggestions to make it a better project and offered moral support to the project team throughout the project.

ALIVE & KICKING PROJECT REPORT

17

Covid-19 is a medical enemy whose invasion has had dire effects that have distressed the socio-economic status quo of the global community in a way no one ever predicted. Every minute the corona virus continues to thrive over mankind, its effects dig deeper making it harder to recover the socio-economic status quo. It is against this background that the Rotary Club of Bwebajja and its community service partner, the Rotaract Club of Bwebajja invite everyone in their individual capacity to join the fight by adhering to the Covid-19 preventive and control measures to protect themselves and those in their immediate circles from contracting the Corona virus. With everyone living responsibly by doing what they ought to do, the corona virus war shall be won.
