Message from District Rotaract Representative Dear Friends, I hope everyone is keeping warm in the cold winter!

Rtr. Sneha Shakya

District Rotaract Representative Rotaract District Committee, Rotary International District 3292

Thank you to the seven clubs who have completed the DRR Visits to date. It was great to meet and interact with Rotaractors from different clubs and learn about the amazing work the clubs have been doing. It was a mutual learning and sharing meeting, where we had the opportunity to share ideas, suggestions, and feedback. I hope it was a fruitful meeting for all club members as well. I look forward to meeting the remaining 119 clubs soon for the DRR Visits! The biggest festival in Rotaract, the annual Rotaract District Conference, is right around the corner! With the theme “Investing in Youth, we plan to bring together different stakeholders that work for and in areas concerning the youth, for vibrant discussions on how we can together create an enabling environment for the youth to learn, grow and become competent individuals. The different sessions are finalized and the details are available in this issue of the monthly newsletter. Likewise, we are in the process of finalizing the speakers and panelists, the details of which will be shared in due course of time. All in all, the organizing team and hosts are putting together the best efforts to ensure an impeccable conference experience to all! The nationwide Rota Quiz is taking place this December, and the Finale will be held in the District Conference itself. Special appreciation to Rotaract Club of Parbat for carrying forward this legacy which was started a few years ago. The Rota Quiz is definitely a wonderful opportunity to engage in learning along with fellowship, and I urge all clubs to participate in it. The selection and announcement of outstanding projects, to receive the Rotaract District Grant via the Rotaract District Fund, will also be held in the Rotaract District Conference. The applications shall open soon and I encourage all clubs to apply for this grant. The concept note and procedure have already been shared with all club leaders. This is a small effort to support the outstanding project ideas that our Rotaractors come up with, and I hope this effort will help in bringing out some impactful results. Let us continue our vibrant activities in December, and let us all get together in the Rotaract District Conference for the biggest Rotaract festival of the year! Best wishes. Interview

Mr. David shakya, DRR 2011-12 1. How would you define the Rotaract experience? I joined Rotaract when I was 18, which I think was a milestone and one of the best decisions ever made such that I could enjoy complete 12 years of Rotaract life. The experience of Rotaract has been phenomenal in a lot of ways. Though I was born and brought up in Pokhara, Rotaract took me places beyond my hometown in Nepal and outside to 4 other countries – India (5 times), Australia (twice), USA (once) and Thailand (once). Whether it be taking a first international flight or bungee jumping from the highest point, Rotaract has given me a lot. Learning was like breathing – be it organizing small events, learning from travel to running an organization with proper policies, structure, and systems. These experiences will remain with me throughout my life. So, in short, the experience has been wonderful. 2. How has your Rotaract experience complemented to your career and life? If I have to take away only one of the best learnings of Rotaract, I would say, the learning of running an organization. It starts with small things like writing an email, meeting minutes or to draft a policy that can accommodate all concerned at large – no wonder I am given to take the session to the secretaries in most of the DLTS! These invaluable skills directly correlate with what someone will be doing on a daily basis at work and is required in all organizations. This has helped me tremendously in all the organizations I have worked with so far. My first full-time job’s vacancy was opened for Rotaractors and my immediate superior was none other than Past District Governor, Rtn. Dilendra Raj Shrestha. The board of that organization also represented many Rotarians making me closer to the fraternity. Taking higher-level positions in Rotaract District made me go through and prepare a lot of training manuals, handbooks, policy, and guidelines. In my third job, I was given the responsibility of making manual of company-related processes, tasks, software to compile HR policy. Currently, I am Country Manager of an Australian based international education aggregator, where I administer Accounts, HR, Marketing, Operation, and maintain various client relationships. At times I find lots of similarities to administering various clubs all over the nation as a DRR. With the experience of managing that as a DRR, I am more skilled, confident and can take calculated risks that profits the business. Also, there is a lot of professional networks developed through Rotaract connections and relationships. So keep connecting and learning in Rotaract! 3. You became DRR at a very young age, how was the journey like?

Mr. David Shakya

District Rotaract Representative 2011-12

Rtn. David Shakya is International Education Consultant and is currently the country manager of Global Study Partners which is a a B2B partnership brand of studylane group of companies. He is skilled and experienced in various management verticals - Finance, Online / Offline Marketing, Human Resources, Administration. Highly enthusiastic about He is also a gold certificate holder in Bachelor of Business Administration. I didn’t ever undervalue my age and took a decision to be the youngest DRR. I believe the advantage for me was that I joined Rotaract at a very early age, as a Charter Vice President directly. Each year I took one more step above and ultimately got to serve as the DRR in 2011-12 at the age of 23 years. I got inspired to become one when I was the District Secretary in 2009-10. The value of the information I could collect and disseminate to all Rotaract in Nepal made me feel that I had all it takes to be a DRR. Luckily, no one else filed for the position and I was unanimously announced as the DRR. (DRR Acceptance Speech: https://tinyurl.com/up2tlya) As ROTASIA Nepal 2012 was on my plate of responsibilities, I had a lot to do. I had to tweak a lot of District events. ROTASIA falling in January, I had to shift my District Assembly to March. With that postponing, we had to cancel 2nd Presidents’ and Secretaries’ meet. Besides ROTASIA, the District Assembly 2011-12 was also embraced by then RI President Kalyan Banerjee which is another milestone in the history of the Rotaract Movement in Nepal. We took the once in a lifetime opportunity of clicking 2011-12 batch photo with the heads at each level of RI Protocol – RI President, RI President’s Representative, District Governor, District Rotaract Committee Chair, DRR with 1) District Committee, 2) Presidents and 3) Secretaries. District 3292 was also received Rotaract Outstanding Project Award by RI International in Rotaract Pre

Convention 2012, Bangkok. And the year closed with the award ceremony where everyone enjoyed in the melody of Kutumba bring the year to a smooth finish. Looking back I feel 2011-12 will always be remembered for all the milestones it had achieved and bringing the financial wellbeing to the organization. I smile when people say, ‘Those were the Rotaract days!’. And not to mention, perhaps I am the only DRR who had a chance to establish and use the Rotaract District Secretariat. 4. What was the theme of your tenure as DRR and what inspired you? My DRR theme was, ‘Learn, Unlearn and Relearn’. Again, it was the first time when a theme along with the theme logo was elaborated and explain in depth (as seen in the picture below)

I have always taken Rotaract as an institution and I wanted to make my year where Rotaractors unlearn the incorrect things and relearn the right things in whatever they do. Perhaps I was close to being successful. I remember after months of finishing my tenure, a Rotaractor dropped me a message in facebook with the image below and said she finally understood my theme.

4

5. What were the biggest challenges back then? Well, when I look back, it feels as if things are really easy these days. Communication is getting a lot more comfortable. However, as my tenure had ROTASIA in it, finance was a real challenge. When the budget for the program was prepared, it almost crossed Rs. 1 Crore. I still have the one-page budget sheet break down with that 8-digit figure at the bottom right corner. Rotary District, Major Donors, all the Rotarians who contributed themselves and/or tapped into their network for the support, all Rotaractors who paid Rs.100 more in District dues for ROTASIA and other personal voluntary contribution as well as Rotaract Club’s contribution made it possible and brought the district to the highest financial surplus - a 7 digit figure, on a single year! I remain indebted to everyone’s generosity. 6. You were the Rotasia Host DRR, how was the experience hosting the biggest gathering of Rotaract in South Asia? After completion of the event, I can now proudly say that, “650 participation, 28 Districts, 5 Countries, 4 days, 1 event”. That was exactly how ROTASIA was! The interest to host ROTASIA in Nepal was not conceptualized the year prior when we had to bid. However, the preparation was missing, which is why it was postponed into my tenure. A team of more than 100 Rotaractors went to Rotasia Goa in 2010 where I presented the plan and brought Rotasia home. The difficult part was the finance, however, making people understand what ROTASIA was very difficult as most of the Rotaractors did not have experience of attending it. We had started participating in such events just a few years before we hosted in 2012. This event was also exemplary in lot of ways – it was a time when we used ‘Rotaract Club’ as a common noun than be divided into individual club event. We collaborated with many stakeholders beyond Rotaract International Labour Organization (ILO), and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Nepal Tourism Board supported the event in various ways. The only things that I have learnt from this is – if you have a good team , nothing is impossible. Beside the photos below, see the links to each day’s photo at the end.

7. What or who has been your greatest inspiration in Rotary - Rotaract and why? I do not have specific someone who inspired me. Everyone I have met in Rotaract has inspired me in one or the other way. It’s the dedication and selfless actions of everyone that has intrigued me. And till this date, if I have something difficult task to achieve, I always wish, if only I have the ROTASIA team to work with. 8. As someone who has experienced Rotaract beyond the District and internationally, what has been the most memorable experience? The years 2011 and 2012 is the year full of memories which will easily win over all the years that I have spent in Rotaract. There are many incidents and activities that are most memorable: • Getting an overwhelming response while I was the District Secretary. The best compliment was ‘I never expected District Secretary to be this young!’ from Upendra Poudel, RC Pokhara Mid Town • Presenting the bid for ROTASIA Nepal 2012 in Rotasia Goa 2011. • Hosting ROTASIA Nepal 2012 (Definitely!) • Bunjee Jumping wearing ROTASIA T-shirt to promote ROTASIA Nepal 2012 – I don’t know from where I got the guts! • Finishing DRR visit in 50 clubs then – which was perhaps the highest number of clubs visited by DRR in a year. • Presence of RI President in the Rotaract District Conference. We were given a total of 45mins. We completed the photo shoot and the entire opening ceremony of the 4th Rotaract District Conference within that time. • Starting of Rotaract fellowship groups like Rotaract Riders, Rotaract Doctors, Rotaract Readers, Music Playing Rotaractors, Rotaract Nurses, etc. • Bagging Rotaract South Asia MDIO Outstanding DRR for the year 2011-12. Photo below with Past RI President Wilfred Wilkinson. • An all sponsored trip to Australia to present in Australian Rotaract Conference 2012, Canberra and District Conference of RI District 9710, Moruya. • An all sponsored trip to USA to at present in Partners of Service in Rotary in 2012 where only 4 people from all around the world were selected. 3 others were from Venezuela, Thailand and Brazil. • A sponsored trip to Sydney, Australia to attend the Rotaract Pre Convention and RI Convention 2014. 9. What differences have you found so far in the Rotaract movement since you joined Rotaract in comparison to the current time? It has been some time that I am not in touch with Rotaract. However, I feel that people are trying to make an impact but at a superficial level only. You need to get your hands dirty to actually do it. I see most of the Rotaract now are millennial and are not aware of the history. I see Rotaract being diluted and thin, seeing which I feel a little saddened. To an extent, Rotaract charm has definitely decreased. 10. What suggestion would you give to current rotaractors? Well, Rotaract is a platform- use it the way you want to for everyone’s wellbeing. Like I had mentioned earlier, it is an institution apt for the ones willing to learn, make friends and explore. I am pretty sure you won’t be disappointed. District Rotaract Representative’s Official visits District Rotaract Representative (DRR) visits to clubs are customary practices in Rotaract, yet a fundamental part of the District Committee’s activities. Hence, as a part of the DRR’s activities, meeting club office bearers and general members is essential. DRR Visits are not meant for evaluation, rather a chance for the club members to interact with the DRR and gain the required support and insights, while also discussing the larger Rotaract Movement. The DRR Visit also serves the purpose of sharing about district goals and targets for the year, updates on the achievement of district goals, and how clubs can contribute towards it.

Nonprofit Conversations:

3 Powerful TED(x) Talks for Nonprofit and Social Work Leaders

#1. The world doesn’t need another new nonprofit. In his thought-provoking talk at TEDxPeachTree, Kirk Bowman (Ph.D.) explains the importance of resisting the alluring temptation of wanting to launch a project to help people you don’t even know halfway around the world. Using cases from his research, Bowman highlights the role of empowering local organizations that are in the ground. These organizations know their communities better and are creating an impact. Nonprofits can identify, invest and inspire these organizations to create a long-term impact in the communities. Kirk Bowman is a political scientist and global development champion, a professor at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the co-founder and director of the international NGO Rise Up and Care. #2. The way we think about charity is dead wrong. Nonprofits are often evaluated with greater scrutiny and higher standards of accountability. While accountability and transparency are non-negotiable features of nonprofit organizations, having different rulebooks for nonprofits inhibits innovation. In this TED Talk, activist and fundraiser Dan Pallotta calls out the double standards for charities and suggests that “instead of equating frugality with morality” society should reward charities for their big goals and accomplishments. Dan Pallotta is also the author of “Uncharitable: How Restraints on Nonprofits Undermine Their Potential”.

#3. Modern Nonprofit Governance: Passion is not enough! Upon the demise of his wife, Chris Grundner left JPMorgan Chase and founded the Heinz-Grundner Brain Tumor Foundation in 2005. In this TEDxWilmington talk, he reflects on his journey as a nonprofit founder and board member to suggest that passion is not enough to lead a high impact nonprofit. Grundner uses the analogy of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs to explain four needs of modern nonprofit governance: passion, standards and best practices, diversity (in skills and perspectives) and transcendent leadership. Chris is the CEO of the Delaware Alliance for Nonprofit Advancement. Author: Kaushal Sapkota, MBA Nonprofit Program Designer and Advisor, King’s College “Nonprofit Conversations” is a segment by the MBA Nonprofit Program of King’s College. Through its academic and professional engagement, King’s College has been promoting a discourse of “transparent, impact-driven, innovative, and self-sustaining nonprofits that nurture local innovations through participatory collaborations”.

Investing in Youth

12th Rotaract District Conference

As an extension to the theme of District Conference 2018/19 “ Creating Spaces For Youth”, the Rotaract District Committee 19/20 underpins “Investing in Youth” as the theme for the Rotaract District Conference 2019/20. A plant requires water and constant care to grow. Likewise, a business requires investment to give returns. Similar is the case with youth. If we want a prosperous future, it is important that we invest in the youth now. The “Investing in Youth” conference seeks to open a way for constructive dialogue and discussions regarding the investments made in youth - in other words, the need to provide an enabling environment for the youth to develop themselves by unleashing the potential that they carry, and grow as competent citizens. The discussions will be based on what is and what should be - the opportunities, environment, resources and efforts made by different stakeholders, in providing an enabling environment for the youth. As we have completed 5 years since the world leaders embarked on the 2030 agenda of Sustainable Development Goals, over a third of the 169 SDG targets highlight the role of young people and the importance of their empowerment, participation, and well-being. In this case, we must say a huge responsibility of creating sustained change is shouldered by the youth. However, very little has been done in order to uplift their condition. Through the conference, we would like to create a synergistic relationship between the stakeholders that can possibly lead to a better understanding of issues relating to youth and seeking a way out fostering the youth for a better future. Rotaract District Committee, with all its potentials, envisions to gather the interest of all possible stakeholders working in the field of youth and youth empowerment. The conference seeks to develop and generate a way forward, which will be handed over to the concerned authorities as recommendation. The event as the forum of change-makers, innovators and most importantly, the leaders will be a benchmark in our mission to embark the values of transformational leadership.

About the Event The Rotaract District Conference is a two - day conference, a gathering of Rotaractors from all across Rotary International District 3292, comprising of Nepal and Bhutan. While the Rotaract District Conference hold the primary purpose to bring together Rotaractors from all over the District for fruitful conversations and fellowship, the Organizing Committee this year plans to bring together multiple stakeholders that work for and in agendas concerning the youth. Event Dates: December 27 - 28, 2019 Venue: Yala Durbar Venue, Sankhamul, Kathmandu
