Message from District Rotaract Representative Dear Fellow Rotaractors, Welcome to June! We now enter the final month of Rota Year 2019-20! June is also the Rotary Fellowship month. June is designated as the Rotary Fellowships Month, to recognize the importance of international fellowship and goodwill among Rotarians with similar recreational and vocational interests, promote increased participation in fellowships, and increase understanding of this program.

Rtr. Sneha Shakya

District Rotaract Representative Rotaract District Committee, Rotary International District 3292

I hope you are staying safe and taking good care of yourself and the ones around you. This is an unexpected and challenging time, but like every challenge, this has also opened ways to bring out innovation and creativity in the things we do. This has been very well reflected in the activities that we have been carrying out for several weeks now. Thank you for keeping up positivity and keeping your energy and enthusiasm high throughout. I thank and appreciate all Rotaract Clubs and Rotaractors who have been working in various areas to support our communities in need. I also request all Rotaract Clubs and Rotaractors to come together and support the efforts of our Rotaractors who have been engaged in providing necessary support to our communities, through fundraisers, resources and other necessities that are possible in our network. While we engage ourselves in all these different activities, let us make sure that we take every protective measure and prioritize our health and safety! As we prepare for the start of a new Rota Year, it is time that we reflect upon our activities, review our goals and prepare for the year ahead. The beauty of Rotary – Rotaract is that even with the annual leadership handover, we carry on the vision we have set for our clubs and build on our legacy. We continue working towards our shared journey and our shared vision to bring positive changes in our communities and within ourselves, and this is what makes this journey truly unique. I urge all incoming and outgoing leaders to review and reflect your club’s status and activities, and plan on how the legacy and leadership should be carried forward. With the possibility of holding in-person events being nil at present, our mandatory Rotaract District Events are being held virtually. With the consent of all Rotaract Clubs, the second Presidents and Secretaries Meet is being held virtually on June 20, 2020, and the 13th Rotaract District Assembly is being held on June 27, 2020. We will be recognizing our clubs, the contributions to the District Goals, and all the wonderful club activities virtually through our social media handles on June 28, 29 and 30. Along with our District events, the Rotary International Convention and the Rotaract Post Convention are also happening virtually on June 20-26, 2020 and June 27-28, 2020 respectively. We encourage Rotaractors to utilize this opportunity to participate in these global events, and as world Rotary leaders have mentioned, “Rotary is now more connected than ever!” See you all on June 20, 27, 28, 29 and 30, virtually! Interview

Mr. Suraj poudel, DRR 2017-18 How different is life after Rotaract? I was first introduced to Rotaract in RY 2009-10. Since then, Rotaract Movement has been a boon to every aspect of my life. Be it life goals, family issues or friends, Rotaract and my time in Rotaract has given me an insight which led me to become what I am now. I have always strived to achieve the best and gather experiences to do better each day. However, I firmly believe my involvement in the Rotaract Club of Kathmandu, my home club, has shaped me into who I am now. At present, I may have a limited circle, and my office work takes a lot of my time, but Rotaract as a platform is always on my mind. Since I joined the Rotaract Fraternity to facilitate Rotaract 3292 as a DRR, there are lots of things that I have learned. And professionally speaking, what my Rotaract journey sowed in me has had a significant impact on my life. So much so, that life after Rotaract is something I cannot fathom. There is a spirit of Rotaract in whatever I do, wherever I am. All I can say is that when an individual joins the fraternity and devotes her/his time to Rotaract, the spirit of Rotaract with always be in them. Once you embrace Rotaract and its motto, you never leave what I mean to say. Life after Rotaract is not a thing to me; there is a Rotaractor in me in everything I do. What is the favorite moment in Rotaract? My journey in Rotaract has been a surreal ride for almost a decade now. So, pinning some moments as my favorite ones will be something that I am not capable of because there are so many to choose from, and I cannot choose just one. If I had to, i would select talking and joking with my fellow home club members and my close friends in the fraternity. Following the years that I spent as a Rotaractor and also serving RID 3292 in various portfolios, some moments do stand out. While serving the Rotaract Club of Kathmandu, as the president for RY 2013-14, we had a series of joint meetings with the national and

District Rotaract Representative 2017-18 He is the past president of the Rotaract Club of Kathmandu. international twin clubs. The fellowship that followed the joint meetings are unforgettable. Further, while serving the 3292 District both as DS and DRR, some visits to the clubs around the District will always have their impact on my life. People around the country who knew me just because of the Rotaract movement and their welcoming nature and hospitable environment will always make me humble. All in all, my Rotaract journey throughout the decade has had many moments, while some of them are bad, almost all of them are good, and I cherish all of those, good or bad. A favorite moment for me in Rotaract is me joining the fraternity because it has contributed to me becoming who I am today, and I cherish all those. What tips would you like to give to the fresh members of the Rotaract? Rotaract, for me, has always been a platform where one comes and hones her/his abilities, skills, and thrives on getting better professionally. For the individuals who wish to join Rotaract, I have one suggestion:- If you are willing to give your productive time to this organization, please understand that it is you who can help in developing yourself. In this platform, you can showcase and sharpen the skills and identify new ones. If you devote your time here, make sure that you learn and never stop to thrive on learning more. The fraternity that we call Rotaract has many things to offer to make sure that you learn something through while serving the movement. How different is Rotaract from other youth clubs? Rotaract, for me, as an individual, is more than a youth club. The number of people involved in the movement globally is admirable. As members of the Rotaract fraternity, we work towards professional development while following the Rotary movement’s ideals to make the world a better place to live. Rotaract being a program of Rotary International, has always focused on one thing; helping the young adults grow such that they develop morally, help their community, and help one another. Please share your special tips for the university-based clubs for their smooth functioning. “University-based Rotaract Clubs are different than Community based clubs, and vice-versa.” This is a common expression we hear in Rotaract. While one has a more significant number of Rotaractors, the other has the advantage of having Rotaractors from different areas of interest. For me, though, both remain the same. Having served the 3292 District in various portfolios, I contacted both community-based and university-based clubs. I believe both have the same philosophy and motive towards helping the community and helping each other grow. As ‘Rotaract’ is a platform for one to grow while assisting others in developing and further serving the needy. All I can say about this particular inquisition about sharing special tips to university-based clubs are that you all are functioning the movement as expected of you. And as a PDRR, I am happy. My advice for you is that you don’t forget why you have joined the movement and work for the cause of the movement, which is something you all know. Regarding the “functioning” part, I believe you all know what you are doing, and I think in the Rotaract spirit in each of you. So keep doing what you are doing while helping each other around grow. A large number of members represents a challenge in using them effectively and having any meaningful individual participation. When talking of any individual, we should take into account not only her/his expertise but also what s/he feels about the variables that affect our daily lives. Large numbers of members, for me, is never a challenge. When any individual enters any organization, s/he may have little or no knowledge about the organization’s goal. It is up to the individuals who joined earlier to guide the new members about the goals of the organization. When the unique individual grasps the ideals that lie within, it makes the organization even more robust. And, talking about Rotaract, we are an ever-growing platform. The more the youths join the cause, the stronger we become as a fraternity. Once the “new member” grasps the ideals, it is no challenge. They will carry the spirit that we all carry and will participate in any aspect that might challenge them, both socially or professionally. A large number of members who know their goals in life and who are willing to help the community in their needs while working to grow professionally is a boon to any society.

How can Rotaract contribute to the post-pandemic situation? Pandemic, as we all know, is a global situation. Rotaract is a global society. With that said, maybe there are a handful of Rotaractors across the world who can work on the front lines during the pandemic. Those on the front line know what their responsibilities are, and I am thankful to them. But the other majority of us have our responsibilities. Rotaract as an institution can help towards making people aware of the situation, stopping the fake news floating around us, and most of all, assisting non-rotaractors to not panic during this situation. We as Rotaractors know about global issues, and this being one, we also know that people other than those involved in Rotary Family might have a different insight into the situation. Since Rotaract, we practice the motto of fellowship through service. We all know that fellowship at this time is not possible physically. Still, the second part of the motto is ‘service,’ and we all know what that is. During this pandemic, we, as a Rotaractors, should work on helping others cope with it. Post pandemic, being another global situation, we can work towards restoring the community. As a Rotaractor we can be an agent of change and influencer to the people so that the society can function as it functioned before the pandemic occurred. Please share why and how you became a part of the Rotaract family. Environment Journalism Training conducted by Rotaract Club of Kathmandu attracted me to join the Rotaract Movement. My colleagues suggested me to join the Rotaract meeting. What is your key takeaway as a DRR? What tips would you like to give to the future leaders in Rotaract? Event management, crisis management, leadership development time management, etc Tips: Member Retention and conducting proper training according to members’ interests by leaders who have good knowledge about the topic What is your favorite leadership quote? (If can be self-composed as well as borrowed) “Of all the path you take in your life, make sure some of them are dirt.” I can neither recall who said this nor where I heard or read it, but it has affected me so much in whatever I do. This one sentence has had a significant impact on my life, and the more experience I gain, the more I get drawn towards the quote—a simple line, precise and well put. But once you start thinking about it, it takes one to a different level psychologically. It speaks of the decisions you make in life. Choices always present them in a way that one has to choose between the one you decide on and the others that are present, which one is fully aware of. The quote is, “It is the decisions in life you take that shape what you become. Some are easy, and some are tough.” Hard or easy, one has to make her/his own decision, but while making one, although the simple way out seems the way to progress, one should also face the gravelly and rough patched roads to improve oneself.

Rotaract Club response to COVID-19

The evolving situation of COVID-19 has brought uncertainty and wonders about health and the economy. With varied impacts around the world as it stands, today the situation due to the Corona Virus Outbreak and possibilities in the future is dire. While we believe and advocate on “Safety of Everyone is Priority’’ what the Rotaract Clubs of 3292 have done is praiseworthy, the immediate help response from taking care of club members’ strength to their society around them, taking care of mental health of people to serving the relief materials. And utilizing this lockdown into connecting the dots by extending the friendship not only with Rotaract Districts and Clubs around the world but also the many other organizations with the same motive to contribute the best response on this pandemic crisis.

King’s College The MBA Nonprofit Program Impact Talk 2020 May 15, 2020 The MBA Nonprofit Program at King’s College organized yet another session of Impact Talk, on “Working in the Nonprofit Sector: Opportunities, Challenges, and the Future.” More than 60 participants attended the online panel discussion on work and employment in the nonprofit sector. The panelist - Dipendra KC (Assistant Dean of Academic Affairs, School of Global Studies, Thammasat University, Thailand), Gael Robertson (Honorary Fellow at the University of Edinburgh, UK), Sulakshena Tamrakar (Director of Human Resources and Administration, Save the Children, Nepal), and Swikriti Bashyal (Emergency and Peacebuilding Officer, IOM, Ethiopia) - shared their experiences in the nonprofit and social work sector to share the nuances of work, skills required and the future of nonprofit work amidst the current pandemic. Impact Talk is the program’s bi-monthly event, that aims to promote a discourse of “transparent, impact-driven, innovative, and selfsustaining nonprofits that nurture local innovations through participatory collaborations”.

Industry Conversations Series May 23, 2020 The MBA Nonprofit Program at King’s College started a new series of discussions called “Industry Conversations” with the objective connecting academia and the nonprofit sector to share experiences, inspirations, and opportunities. In the first session, Dipendra KC (Ph.D.) presented about “Activism in the Pandemic” by sharing recent research on the impact of COVID-19 on over 200 civil society organizations of Nepal. The research was jointly coordinated by the School of Global Studies, Thammasat University, Thailand, and Nepal Institute for Policy Research (NiPoRe).

Nonprofit Conversations - 5 Tips for Nonprofit Managers As the COVID-19 pandemic overwhelms the community, nonprofit managers are concerned about their financial uncertainties. Many organizations are at risk of discontinuing their programs, thereby, “unintentionally” affecting their beneficiaries. The case is severe in the context of Nepal, as the economic crisis in developed economies reduces funding forInternational NonGovernmental Organizations (INGOs), and the resulting trickled down effects jeopardize the works of national and local NGOs. Amidst such circumstances, financial management and funding is the next major challenge facing nonprofit managers. Reflecting on the sharing session by Professor Renee Irvin of the University of Oregon’s School of Planning, Public Policy, and Management, Kaushal Sapkota (Faculty, King’s College) summarizes five tips for nonprofit and social impact managers of Nepal to cope with this crisis: (1) Shift to “zero-budgeting”. Each and every line item needs justification. (2) Collaborate with other nonprofits to share resources and reduce costs. (3) Communicate with your donors (INGOs), requesting them to loosen the restrictions on “restricted” funds (in our case, funds that were dedicated for other purposes). (4) Board members need to step up, meet often, and discuss contingency strategies. (5) Implement cost reduction strategies - examples: request for a temporary break from rents, offer “unpaid” sabbaticals for staff.
