Message from District Rotaract Representative Dear Fellow Rotaractors, It is surprising to see we have completed seven months of Rota Year 201920 already! Thank you for all the wonderful activities and contributions towards our district goals!

Rtr. Sneha Shakya

District Rotaract Representative Rotaract District Committee, Rotary International District 3292

The DRR Visits have been opportunities for the District Committee to learn about all the wonderful activities that the clubs have been doing and also to interact with fellow members. The visits have been interesting learning and sharing experiences and I, along with the District Committee, look forward to such interactions in the upcoming club visits as well. As we all know, the 2nd Presidents and Secretaries Meet and PETS - SETS is scheduled for the 4th of April, 2020. The agendas for the PS Meet have already been called for, and I urge all Rotaract Clubs in our District to forward relevant agendas that will help improve the Rotaract District operations and foster Rotaract movement in our District. I look forward to the presence of all Rotaract Clubs for some interesting and relevant discussions in the PS Meet. As the saying goes, “The job of a leader is to create more leaders”. As we work tirelessly to inspire and engage more youth in Rotaract, every year, we bring in new leaders who carry on the legacy of our clubs. I hope that every club has finalized the President Elect, and if not, it is important that the President Elect is finalized as soon as possible. This will allow sufficient time for planning for the next Rota year, while also to keep the next year’s activities in sync with the current year, and work further for the progress of the club by adding upon the current year’s activities. Therefore, it is important that the President elect is finalized by now, and that the President elect starts to plan for the upcoming tenure! As we all know, March 13 is marked as the World Rotaract Day. It is the day that the first ever Rotaract Club was chartered. Every year, Rotaractors celebrate the World Rotaract Week across the globe. This year, the World Rotaract week falls on the week of March 9 - 15. The Rotaract District Committee has planned a recommended list of activities to mark the World Rotaract Week, which shall bring about vibrant celebrations in our clubs, communities, social media and with our Rotary family. Let us celebrate Rotaract with high energy, enthusiasm and joy, while also creating impact with our activities. Best wishes always! Rtr. Sneha Shakya District Rotaract Representative 2019-20

Interview

Mr. Ashish chaulagain, DRR 2013-14 1. How is your life after Rotaract? A: My life was and is still revolving around Rotary and Rotaract. I still visit these clubs here in Australia to give Rotary and Rotaract related presentations focused on the projects and activities that are done in Nepal along with my personal experiences of volunteering with Rotary and Rotaract. 2. What potentials does Rotaract hold? A: The strength of Rotaract are its members, its network, and its resource mobilization capability. We have the potential to collaborate with many Governmental, Non Governmental and International agencies and help them as their key strategic partner, to achieve these organizations’ national and international goals. Rotaract itself has the capacity to organize itself and lead a grassroots movement for the greater good. 3. If the potentials are utilized fully, where do you see Rotaract going in 10 years from now? A: With proper strategic planning and its implementation, I see Rotaract being one of the world’s most successful independent movements led by youth. We have all it takes to organize campaigns and projects of national and international level and also advocate on many pertaining issues. 4. What lessons has Rotaract taught you? A: Since my involvement in Rotaract, I have learned many lessons. However, the most important ones are: - To not hesitate to share one’s vision -To not be afraid to ask for assistance in need

Mr. Ashish Chaulagain

District Rotaract Representative 2013-14 He is currently the Education Counselor at Expert Education and Visa Services Adelaide. He has also worked as Administrative Head (School of Business and Technology) at Thames International College.

- To keep ourselves surrounded by good people while sharing our knowledge -To keep the eagerness to learn alive in any and every condition. -To dedicate time for yourself in terms of mental, spiritual and professional growth. 5. What was your theme during your tenure of DRR-ship? A: My theme for the year 2013-14 was “Deepen Your Roots, Broaden Your Vision” but we promoted “Fellowship through Service” and Rotaract Emblem throughout the year. 6. How do you think can clubs retain their members? A: When we are able to establish a sustainable relationship between individuals with their respective clubs and other members we can find the true meaning of Rotaract. It is also important to organize projects as per the needs and interests of its members. When one can track what they value in Rotaract it keeps bringing them back. It may be organizing entertainment and fellowship programs through club service activities, enhancement of skills through professional development activities and/or helping the community through community service activities. Finding the interest of the members and organizing everything around that interest can be the first step. 7. Do you think the Rotaract is evolving with time? Is it for better or for worse? A: It’s definitely evolving in terms of the nature of the projects we are doing. The way we are organizing projects and activities and the way we are collaborating with partners and Rotary clubs is different now. This evolution will only take us forward as I feel there is no back gear in Rotaract. 8. How is Rotaract in Nepal different from that in Australia? A: In Nepal we are very much focused on procedure, portfolios or let me say the system and formalizing everything that we do, starting from the meeting. However, here its agenda focused, project-focused. The Rotaract of Rotaract movement in Nepal is its membership, basically the numbers which is a big challenge here in Australia. 9. What can Rotaractors from Nepal learn from the Rotaractors of Australia when it comes to service projects and implementations? A: As I mentioned above, they have an agenda, they stick to it, plan it, implement, it monitor it, and review it and take everything they do as a part of the learning process for themselves while relating it with their personal growth and development. At the end of the day, they contemplate and say, I developed this particular skill to this level by being involved in this particular project. If we in Rotaract Nepal, also develop that attitude of relating our actions to self-improvement and analysis along it would be amazing.

Design Thinking Workshop Design Thinking Workshop was conducted successfully in collaboration with Do Lab from the King’s College. It was a two days workshop where mainly Trainers Forum from Rota Year 2019/20 were involved along with a few participants from Rotaract District Committee. A Design Thinking workshop teaches problem-solving in action, giving its participants an approach they can apply to almost any challenge at any point in their lives. It also fosters innovation and teamwork: the very essence of Design Thinking lies in collaboration and thinking outside the box. Participants mainly learned about the technicalities of Design Thinking and understood the process of Empathizing, Designing, Idea-ting, Prototyping, and Testing to bring out what the world needs right now. Participants didn’t just learn the traits of the trade but also worked on how to bring forth their ideas and make a lasting dent in the world.

District Rotaract Representative’s Official visits District Rotaract Representative (DRR) visits to clubs are customary practices in Rotaract, yet a fundamental part of the District Committee’s activities. Hence, as a part of the DRR’s activities, meeting club office bearers and general members is essential. DRR Visits are not meant for evaluation, rather a chance for the club members to interact with the DRR and gain the required support and insights, while also discussing the larger Rotaract Movement. The DRR Visit also serves the purpose of sharing about district goals and targets for the year, updates on the achievement of district goals, and how clubs can contribute towards it.

Workshop on Gender Equality and Social Inclusion The constitution of Nepal envisions Nepal as the ‘inclusive state’ as Article 18 gives the right to equality to every citizen and no person shall be denied equal protection of the law. “Gender Equality and Social Inclusion (GESI) is a concept that addresses unequal power relations experienced by people on the grounds of gender, wealth, ability, location, caste/ ethnicity, language, and agency or a combination of these dimensions.

(GESI). The students of the MBA Nonprofit Program, as well as the faculty members and staff of King’s College, attended the workshop facilitated by Barsha Dharel, Knowledge Management/GESI Expert, Food and Agricultural Organization, Nepal. The workshop was designed to understand the importance of gender equity and social inclusion in an organizational setting and evaluate the role of GESI evaluation in the social inclusion process.

In January King’s College organized a 4-days workshop on Gender Equality and Social Inclusion

Nonprofit Conversations: For this month we are exploring social justice terms as defined by Texas University- Division of Diversity and Community Engagement, ‘ABCs of Social Justice - A Glossary’ by Department of Inclusion and Multicultural Engagement, Lewis and Clark College, Oregon State University, and Arizona State University – Intergroup Relations Center. Social Justice: The practices of allyship and coalition work in order to promote equality, equity, respect, and the assurance of rights within and between communities and social groups. Civil rights: The rights established and ensured by a state government regarding political and social equality. Gender Identity: A person’s individual and subjective sense of their own gender identities exist in a spectrum and are not just masculine and feminine. Cultural appropriation: The act of members of dominant/powerful/privileged groups claiming ownership of, or the rights to, less powerful/privileged groups’ cultural and/or religious symbols, dress, and ceremonies. Feminism: The pursuit of the social, economic, and political equality of all people, regardless of sex, gender, sexuality, race, geographical location, body size, socioeconomic status, physical and mental ability, and religion.
