Message from District Rotaract Representative Dear Fellow Rotaractors,

Rtr. Sneha Shakya

District Rotaract Representative Rotaract District Committee, Rotary International District 3292

I hope you are staying safe and taking good care of yourself and the ones around you. This is definitely a challenging time but our patience and care are important to overcome this situation. I heartily appreciate and thank all Rotaractors and Rotaract Clubs who have been engaging in different activities in response to COVID - 19. Our Rotaract Clubs have been conducting various activities, let that be awareness campaigns, providing food and other items of daily usage, or other engaging activities. Each activity has a special value and every activity has been touching lives in one way or another. Thank you for your care and courage in recent days! Thank you for constantly striving to create some positivity, for being innovative with your thoughts and making a difference. With the unexpected and difficult situation that we are facing, all of us have been trying to find alternative ways to complete our regular activities. As such, the Rotaract District Committee conducted the President-Elects and Secretary-Elects Training Seminar on a virtual platform. We are thankful to all incoming Rotaract Club leaders for your wholehearted participation in the event. This was definitely a new practice for us, and I am thankful to everyone for your support as we try out new alternative approaches to do our regular activities. We have also been conducting the Club visits virtually, which have been good interactive experiences to date. May is Youth Service Month. This is a special month for us as we mark and celebrate the different opportunities that Rotary provides for the youth to connect, grow through service, develop leadership skills, mentor or be mentored, and enjoy. The Youth Service Month is also the time when Rotary Clubs focus on youth service and working together with the youth. Though our regular activities are not possible with regard to the present situation, we can definitely look for alternative ways to mark this month. A blog post from Rotary Voices is also available in this issue of the newsletter which can help us with ideas on how we can virtually mark the Youth Service Month. With the situation still uncertain, the possibility of our regular district events still remains unpredictable. We have been monitoring the situation, and details will be circulated as per progress. Once again, thank you for all your efforts in response to the current situation. As we engage and participate in different activities, the Rotaract District Committee urges you to prioritize the health and safety of yourself and the people around you. Please take all necessary precautions and preventive measures while you engage in any kind of activity. Stay safe. Take care! Rtr. Sneha Shakya District Rotaract Representative 2019-20

Interview

Mr. Sushil karki, DRR 2016-17 Who was your inspiration in the Rotaract-Rotary? How has that person inspired you? I was introduced to the Rotaract feternity by my sister. She was a member of the Rotaract Club of Kathmandu where I used to participate in service projects before getting enrolled. She was the one who encouraged me to join the Rotaract movement. Before joining I was an introvert, which is why my sister recommended me to join the club. Joining rotaract has definately been fruitful for me and has helped in changing the way I interact with people and situations around me. Thus, I consider my sister to me by major inspiration. What suggestions would you like to give to the new members of the Rotaract? How can they fully utilize their time in Rotaract? -We all are aware that Rotaract is a voluntary organization and that we all are volunteers here. So we have to use our time at the Rotaract movement more effectively and should be able to identify how much time we should invest in this movement. It is a university for leadership skills. Consequently, we should be focused on leadership development along with personnel relation development which will definately aid the future careers. I recommend all the new members of Rotaract to use this platform to develop their life and professional skills and serve the community from the individual/organizational level. How has being a part of Rotaract helped you in making life decisions? A great lesson I have learned as a Rotaract club member and leader is “time management”. Rotaract has taught me about the importance of time and mobilizing limited resources to get maximum output. This learning has helped me to make critical decisions in my life and overcome the challenges that comes along. What mantra would like to give to the future leaders in Rotaract? Rotaract is all about making new connections, developing leadership skills, and serving the community. As said, Leadership is all about creating leaders, not a follower. I suggest all the leaders in Rotaract to

Rtn. Sushil Karki

District Rotaract Representative 2016-17 He is the Past President of the Rotaract Club of Kathmandu. He is an environmentalist by profession and works in the sector of Environmental Conservation (Climate Change) and Water Sanitation and Hygiene. He holds a Master’s Degree in Environmental Science and in Rural Development. He is the Chief Executive Officer/ Founder at Eco-Connect Private Limited and Advisor/Lead Trainer at Connection Nepal.

work together to create a pool of leaders who will serve the community. We should focus more on engaging and connecting new members. What changes have you found in Rotaract then (when you were in the district) and now? Previously there were fewer clubs in our district and all the clubs were connected. More focus was provided on fellowship, joint club projects and participation in other club. Fellowship within the zone and outside the zone was good and almost all the members knew each other. The Rotaract movement seemed more intact. Currently, the number of clubs in our district have skyrocketed. With the increasing number of clubs, the fellowship has shrunk within the club and zonal level. Nonetheless, we have more connections and more opportunities that are yet to be explored. Rotaract district is more resilliant when it comes to database, and the resources for clubs and members have been evolved likewise. Now we are in a state of thinking about the leadership of Rotaract district from clubs outside the Kathmandu valley, which is one of the most transcendent achievements in leadership we have gained. One incident in Rotaract which you will treasure for life. I have many incidents in Rotaract that I will be remenessing for life. The moment I was installed as President of Rotaract Club of Kathmandu and indeed the moment I was declared the DRR during the 7th Rotaract District Conference at Pokhara to name it a few. I would also like to share another very special incident which happened during my tenure as club president, I was invited by a college as a trainer for a 10 days long Personality Development Training for BBA students. I was provided this opportunity as a president of the Rotaract club. This was my first paid professional training. How can the relationship between Rotary and Rotaract be intensified? To enhance the relationship between Rotary and Rotaract we should be able to understand how Rotary International has envisioned rotaract clubs and its functionality. Currently, Rotary international has elevated the status of the Rotaract club and has included Rotaract clubs as a membership type. In our district, most of the Rotary clubs find their sponsored Rotaract club as a financial burden and use Rotaract as a volunteeriry resource whereas Rotaract clubs also get connected with Rotary clubs only when they need financial support and don’t provide updates to their respective parent clubs. To resolve this problem, the members from both side should responsibly look after each other as a partners in service. A Rotary club should work as a mentor of and guide the rotaractors and conduct service projects together. The Rotaract clubs should seek technical resources from Rotary rather than financial. Joint projects and fellowship programs between both club should be also be emphasized. What was the theme of your tenure and why did you choose the theme? During my tenure (RY 2016-17) we worked together with the theme “Explore Rotaract”. The theme was developed as the continuation of the RY 2015-16 theme “Promote Rotaract”. Also, Rotaract as a partner in a service club of Rotary International has created many opportunities for youths but Rotaractors of RID 3292 were not able to cash the opportunities. So, during RY 2016-17 we plan to explore the opportunities we have around us as a Rotary family and make optimum use of those opportunities for the upliftment of youth and society. How and why did you choose to stay connected to the Rotary fraternity? I joined Rotary in July 2018 as a member of the Rotary Club of Kathmandu. The only reason I have joined Rotary is due to my attachment to the Rotary/Rotaract movement. After spending a decade as a Rotaractor, I decided to join Rotary and give back to society and learn more from the Rotary movement. What do you think is the right time/age to join Rotaract and why? I suggest youths join Rotaract at the early age of movement i.e. at or around 18 so that they can have enough time to get connected with the movement and develop leadership aptitude till the end. What is your favorite leadership quote? My favorite leadership quote is by an American scholar and writer Mr.Warren Bennis, “Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality”.

4 ways to celebrate Youth Service Month virtually Youth Service Month is a special time in Rotary. Throughout the month of May, members of Rotary clubs, Rotaract, Interact, and those involved in Rotary Youth Leadership Awards and Rotary Youth Exchange celebrate the opportunities Rotary provides to connect, grow through service, develop leadership skills, mentor or be mentored, and have fun. The outbreak of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, may alter the way we observe Youth Service Month this year. But it need not dampen our enthusiasm, excitement, and gratitude for these programs and the volunteers who make them possible. Here are four ways you can safely celebrate: • Serve. Make the month special by identifying needs in your community, and getting creative with ways to meet them within the safety of local shelter in place guidelines. This could include sewing masks for essential workers, collecting and distributing supplies for shut-ins, or creating a phone chain to offer a message of encouragement to seniors who are isolated and alone. Check out this list of projects being conducted by Rotary clubs around the world for inspiration. • Stay Connected. Schedule an online meeting with your sponsor Rotary club, or with program participants and alumni. Recognize past accomplishments and discuss ways to work

together in the future to strengthen participation. Visit the Meeting Online learning topic to find and share resources, join discussions, and ask for expert advice about creating online meeting spaces. • Unite behind a fundraiser. Empower Rotary’s response to the pandemic by donating to the Disaster Response Fund. Grants from this fund are already providing hospitals in Belgium, Croatia, and Italy with lifesaving ventilators; and equipping frontline healthcare workers with personal protective equipment in Korea, Nigeria, the Philippines, Spain, and the United States. In India, disaster response grants are providing disinfectant sprayers, beds, and mattresses for healthcare facilities. • Set and achieve goals. Take this month to focus on initiatives that will help your club earn this year’s Rotary Citation. Brainstorm sustainable service projects, ways to increase giving to The Rotary Foundation, and build awareness of Rotary in your community. Young people are looking for a way to make a difference. Show them how Rotary equips them to do so, especially in this time of crisis. And watch your membership grow. Share how you’re celebrating Rotary’s Youth Service Month on social media with #RotaryYouthService.
