As we step slowly towards summer and slowly out of lockdown, we’ve experienced a mixed bag of weather this Spring haven’t we! Snow, wind, rain, frost and beautifully sunny days too! Let’s hope that June brings us some settled sunny days! My tomato plants, lettuces, radishes, sweet peas and nasturtiums are now planted in the big outdoors and I’m looking forward to enjoying the ‘fruits of my labours’ in a few months time. If the weather obliges I’m sure the barbecue season will be a busy one this year; it will be so good to get together with friends and family that we have not seen for some time! And with Father’s Day on Sunday 20th June I’m very sure many will enjoy some family time then. Finally things are really starting to feel normal again, not quite back to how they were, but certainly on the way! I moved house in early 2020 and most of my friends and family haven’t been able to visited yet, so it will be lovely to welcome them soon! Given the relaxation of more lockdown rules, we are happy to include a selection of local events this month. It’s obviously been a difficult time to plan events, so it will take a little while still for groups and organisations to provide details of more, but we will do out best to keep you informed over the coming months! Slow but sure... Wishing you all a happy & healthy month ahead, Until next time,

Pre-Nuptial Peace of Mind If you are getting married, this may not be at the top of your wedding day check list, but arranging a Pre or Post-Nuptial Agreement as part of your broader financial planning is worth considering, particularly in circumstances where financial resources are imbalanced, or if you have children from a previous relationship. TWM Solicitors has expert family lawyers who will take the time to understand your individual circumstances and guide you through an agreement which best protects you and your family if the unexpected happens, providing the ultimate peace of mind.

For further information about Pre and Post-Nuptial Agreements, please contact Demelza Patricio, Partner in our Leatherhead office, on 01372 374148 or visit our website. Cranleigh • Epsom • Guildford • Leatherhead • London • Reigate • Wimbledon

WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945

Walking around Ashtead It is a delight walking around Ashtead, as so many of us have no doubt been doing for exercise over this past 15 months, perhaps finding new areas that we hadn’t visited before and seeing the pride that Ashtead residents and shopkeepers take in their gardens, houses and shops to keep them looking great. We should treasure our environment, both built and green, and we are so lucky that we have Ashtead Common and Ashtead Park for walking in and observing wildlife. We also have Ashtead Pond in Barnett Wood Lane, which, thanks to the constant efforts of Cllr Pat Wiltshire, now has a confirmed maintenance agreement in place and work will start there in July this year. We’d also like to offer a big thank you to all those people who volunteered to help with this year’s Ashtead Spring Clean on 17th April, including all those local residents who gave their own roads a clean-up. We had such a great day and were so fortunate with the weather; about 100 people joined us in the beautiful sunshine to help clear our streets and hedgerows of litter. In fact, so many people came that we ran out of litter-pickers, even though many people brought their own. We collected 68 bags of rubbish, including a few masks, plus some large items, mainly metal, that had just been dumped on the roadside or thrown into the hedges. So sad to see such lack of care for our environment by a few thoughtless people. When you’re out walking, check out our local post boxes and tick them off against all the monarchs from Queen Victoria through to our current Queen. Ashtead is one of the few places in the 10 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - JUNE 2021

country that has had post boxes installed during every monarch’s reign since their first appearance in red (they were previously green) in late Victorian times. That includes one of the 161 boxes installed nationwide when Edward VIII came to the throne; there are now around only 130 of those boxes left in the country, and we have one of them located near Ashtead Station. You might also notice on the George V box, that it just shows the initials GR and doesn’t have his regnal number, a peculiarity of this monarch’s post boxes. Tree Planting Update Mole Valley District Council (MVDC), along with all other Districts and Boroughs in Surrey, is participating in Surrey County Council’s (SCC) county-wide exercise to map all publicly owned land (that is land owned by SCC, Districts & Boroughs and some Housing Associations). The results are due in July and will enable planning of what trees could and should be planted and where. Based on the plan, MVDC can make bids for funding and also liaise with other Local Authorities. Residents’ Associations have encouraged MVDC to work closely with the Tree Wardens in Mole Valley who are very familiar with local needs and can offer advice and suggestions about planting in their own locality. In Ashtead, residents have made planting requests to our Tree Wardens but the current SCC tree protocol is more of an inhibitor than an asset in making this happen so we are hoping this latest SCC initiative will see a planting plan for Ashtead being established. FETCHAM RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION FOR ALL COMMUNITY, INFORMATION, HELP AND SUPPORT VISIT: WWW.FETCHAMRESIDENTS.CO.UK EMAIL: CHAIRMAN@FETCHAMRESIDENTS.CO.UK

FETCHAM SPRINGS We were very pleased to hear from Henrietta Stock, SES Water’s Energy and Carbon Manager, at our Zoom AGM in late April. She explained to residents why the company is working on plans to generate solar power on the land it owns at Fetcham Springs. This boils down to something we are hearing a great deal of these days - the need to reduce the company’s ‘carbon footprint’. SES has set itself the target of becoming carbon neutral by 2030, in line with the rest of the UK water industry. So it’s in the process of looking at all of its operations, from its energy consumption, to the fuel it’s using in its vehicle fleet. Generating power from a renewable source, such as solar panels, has been identified as one way to offset the large amount of energy required to pump water around our district. But SES recognises that the land at Fetcham Springs is also a much-valued community and wildlife resource, not just an operational one. So when Henrietta was asked about the size of the installation, it was a relief to many to hear her say that it was her “best guess”

that it would not take up more than 50% of the land, and could be a lot less. The company is also talking about a visitors’ centre on the site, but has yet to identify its location. Residents have been right to voice their concerns about its potential scale, parking requirement and how it would be accessed from surrounding roads. Henrietta made clear there was much detailed work to do, including ecological surveys of the site. A morning walk through the field makes a very pleasant contrast with the pavement along the Cobham Road. The sight and sounds of summer warblers as they fly fast and low between thickets of hawthorn. A kestrel hovering, and the chance of seeing a grazing deer. It’s a mini-wilderness, and there’s much to cherish and appreciate. On the other hand there’s an urgent requirement for all of us to meet the challenges of global warming and climate change. There is a balance to be struck, and with our residents thoughtful support, the FRA is keen to play its part in this process. Ian Anderson FRA

This month Buy to Let Hunter are chatting to Melinda who lives abroad and so can’t be here in person to act for herself: What were you hoping to achieve? Melinda explains that asking Buy To Let Hunter to manage her flat in Richmond as a short term serviced accommodation makes sense whilst she is spending time abroad. “I wanted to keep my flat, to maintain a toe hold in London, but it was a purely commercial decision to sweat my assets whilst I choose to live somewhere else.” She explains that she didn’t think too much about traditional pensions during her working life; instead, she mostly invested in properties in the 80s and 90s where she could afford them and by default she now relies on that rental income in her retirement. BTLH can help you find the perfect pad to set up as a serviced apartment, too.

Why did you choose BTLH? Melinda explained “The onset of Covid caused a dearth of options in the lettings market. The world has changed in rental terms.” Melinda spoke to the agents who used to handle her property and found their model no longer really fit for purpose, for her anyway. “I needed shorter lets so I can come and go from time to time.“The BTLH model is flexible and more cost effective for her needs: “The old agents were proposing a 25% charge on any rental income and then a range of expenses that add up to £500-£600 for every letting!” They were billing her for inventory and administrative costs which seemed to be in addition to the fees she was already paying. Advertising feature

“It’s one thing if you are having lets of a year or more, but it really didn’t make sense for the shorter term serviced accommodation model that I needed.” She explained. Melinda was also unsure about the due diligence when the agents took references for her tenants as they always seemed to be outsourced – “BTLH have a much more personal and less algorithmic approach!” she laughed – ah yes, I smiled, the advantage of having a very small office!

So, Melinda, what has your experience been working with BTLH? “It’s been very good!” she explained from Switzerland where she was locked down up a mountain. A lot of her girlfriends who got in to “buy to let” are local so don’t need to rely as heavily on management as Melinda does. “I can trust you to make the right decisions and it helps finance my lifestyle whilst retaining flexibility. I feel the security of knowing I have a bolt hole but can’t afford to just leave the asset standing.” Fancy a bit of a nomad retirement like Melinda? ONE SMALL STEP FOR GARDENERS IS ONE GIANT LEAP FOR wildlife! Frances Tophill, BBC Gardener’s World presenter, supports Surrey Wildlife Trust’s new wildlife gardening survey Bug hotel - Surrey Wildlife Trust

Frances Tophill author and BBC Gardener’s World presenter is supporting Surrey Wildlife Trust’s new online wildlife garden survey. Anyone can take the survey, from complete beginners to advanced gardeners, and in just a few minutes find out how their garden scores for wildlife. The quick and easy online survey measures gardens on five essential features: food, shelter, water, connectivity between gardens and natural solutions. The survey shows that every type of gardener, from those with small gardens to large, can take simple steps to help restore wildlife in their street. Frances Tophill said: “The survey shows just how easy it is to encourage more wild & wonderful creatures into gardens. If we step back & do a little bit less in our gardens, we can do so much more for declining insects & wildlife. Less mowing. Less weeding & more thought about how our gardens connect to the wider landscape. It’s that easy to help wildlife thrive.” Surrey Wildlife Trust’s number one tip is to just add water to your garden. Then leave a patch of your garden to grow wild with weeds and long grass. Taking part in #NoMowMay is one of the best things gardeners can do to help wildlife flourish. Give the lawn mower a rest for a month and the longer grass will soon become a rich habitat for insects and spiders which the birds will love too, hopping around to find tasty insect snacks. 20 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - JUNE 2021

Claire Gibbs, award winning principal ecologist at Surrey Wildlife Trust and judge for Gardener’s World Garden of the Year Awards for 2021, said: “New this year in the survey is a whole section on connectivity, focusing on the importance of wildlife being able to move around both within your garden & using neighbouring gardens as stepping stones to travel down entire streets. “Creating street wide wildlife groups to encourage wildlife gardening & maybe some wildflower sowing on road verges is fun & builds a great community spirit. Everyone will enjoy the beautiful array of flowers & even more importantly it will enable wildlife to move & thrive.” The Surrey Wildlife Trust wildlife gardening survey can be shared on social media & WhatsApp groups to encourage famly, friends and neighbours to join in so they too can welcome more wildlife to their streets. Why not share seeds, cuttings, wildlife gardening tips or even create a wildlife gardening group in your street? Take the survey at www.surreywildlifetrust.org/ wildlife-gardening-survey and download your free beetle and action for insects guide. Surrey Wildlife Trust is offering an opportunity to find out more about wildlife gardening online, by email and also with a programme of free online talks on wildlife gardening from beginners to advanced gardeners. The Best Bargains For the best online prices, it’s a really good idea to sign up to shopping sites’ mailing lists. There are often sales, flash discounts and other offers that non-subscribers don’t hear about, and in some cases the discounts can be very big: for example, New Look has offered £25 off orders and GAP has taken 20% off sale items and 30% off full-price styles. You could also sign up for a deals service such as Groupon, but beware: they send an awful lot of emails, and many of the deals are subject to limits in terms of availability and expiry. Whenever you see a supposed bargain on a product or service you can get elsewhere, it’s always a good idea to see what the going rate usually is.

Problems logging in to email? We have recently seen an increase in problems relating to email account passwords not being accepted when using many of the major email programs and apps like Outlook, MacMail, Android Mail to name but a few. There is a simple explanation for this, which has been very poorly communicated, and the reason is that these providers, namely Yahoo, Sky and AOL have introduced another level of security which will generate a random once used password for you to use in conjunction with that specific mail program or app. To get the App Password you have to login to your email webmail account, in this example I will use a Yahoo account. Go to your Yahoo webmail page and login, then go to the Account page, then Settings, then Account Security. Scroll down the page and you will see “Generate App Password”, select the App you wish to use your Yahoo account with, then press the “Generate” button and this will create your one time use password. Take this password and use this temporarily generated password as being your password with the program you wish to use. Now isn’t that simple!! Should you have a problem following these steps please do drop into the store and we can help you there.

Security- Keeping you safe Last month we looked at keeping your Operating System up to date. Assuming you are now fully protected there, our next step is to ensure your applications are not the weak link which is letting your security down. As a guide Microsoft usually provide their Office suite of software with a ten year life cycle which means Office 2010 will go (went) end of life in 2020. Similarly their Office 2013 will go end of life on 2023, and so on. Microsoft are trying to force every user onto the annual subscription product now, and Microsoft have said that the next release of Office (Office 2022) will be their last non-subscription version, although as this will take you through to 2032, there is a good future in the product. What will happen if you continue to use an end of life application like Office 2010? The product will still work, your data will still be accessible. Microsoft will not issue any Bug or Security Fixes, increasing the danger of being attacked by malicious thirdparties, with these risks remaining indefinitely. Finally, as your product presents a security risk, there is a probability that you may be blocked from sharing your documents with any other collaborators, as you could pose a risk to their security too. What can you do to become secure? Your options are limited, but essentially you will need to upgrade to an in-support product- be this the subscription or perpetual version. We are happy to advise further.

MOLE VALLEY RUNNERS lockdown challenges and the return of Group Runs!

The members at Mole Valley Runners continued to have some fun and undertake bingo challenges during the long winter lockdown. Again, hundreds of runs took place, helping to keep people active and motivated, with many people getting out for runs in fancy dress, running backwards or singing songs during their run to score points on their bingo card. People also undertook many ‘buddy runs’ too during lockdown, exploring the local area and finding lots of new trails. Some people decided to undertake exciting new challenges, often for charity, like running every day for 100 days or running 100 miles in a month. Two of our members even achieved the amazing feat of running 10 marathons in 10 days over Easter! What a fabulous achievement! Those two runners, together with another runner who is undertaking the virtual 630 mile South West Coast Path run, have raised over £3,500 for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity through their exploits. 28 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - JUNE 2021

Following the great news from the Government and England Athletics that organised group sport could restart, the club is kicking off with 4 runs per week. The runs take place on Monday mornings, Tuesday evenings, Wednesday evenings and Thursday mornings. The runs start from Bookham Common, Norbury Park and KGV playfields in Effingham. There are also lots of additional ad hoc runs for members of the club. At Mole Valley Runners there is no pressure to be a fast runner, the emphasis is on getting outside, doing something that is good for you and having some fun along the way! The club is an England Athletics Affiliated Club and we are able to offer safe (fully COVID compliant) runs for all levels of participant. Please do join us on our Facebook group: www. facebook.com/groups/MoleValleyRunners if you are looking for some inspiration for some exercise and we would love you to come and join us for a run and make some new friends.

STEP INTO SUMMER

Summer is a time where we see many injuries and re-occurrences of old injuries in our clinic due to that urge to be out in the garden, or to play a round of golf or even start a new exercise regime (this will be especially pertinent this year as lockdown gradually lifts)

So when the sun comes out, please do... 1. Be mindful about yourself and your posture. 2. Change your activity often (weed for 15 minutes, mow the lawn for 15 mins, dig for 15 mins) and then rest for 15 minutes. Gather your thoughts, gather your aches and pains and re-assess. 3. A simple warm up to raise your body temperature (walking is fine). 4. Drink plenty of water. 5. Ice any known areas of concern and any stretches you may know or have been taught in the past for your condition afterwards (like knee hugs, or the pelvic bridge exercises).

But mainly - don’t over do it and seek advice if you start to feel any niggles or pain.

“Our passion is to get fast results, help you understand what is wrong and how to help yourself” We love helping people out of pain, if you have any questions and would like to know more, please just give us a call 01372 363 721 or email us on info@rjclinic.co.uk Check out our website www.rjclinic.co.uk

WHAT’S ON

mole valley W.I. april report Forty members enjoyed another monthly Zoom meeting. We were advised of various Surrey Fed future events and we had an excellent report about the SFWI Council Meeting which an amazing 355 attended and discovered that the board members had decided to dress up and wear hats or fascinators. A lovely touch! There are now 8 WIs in women’s prisons. The speaker for the event, a lumber-jill, explained how 80,000 women had joined the land army during the Second World War and that the work of the lumber-jills had provided much needed timber for the country. Callum Russell then gave an inspirational talk about his life. Callum is totally blind. His mantra “blindness is not a barrier to success” certainly applies to him, as he has a BA in Modern Languages and a Masters in European Political Studies. He has started his own company which enables blind and visually impaired young people into employment and further education. He also talked about how much “Sight for Surrey” who will be 100 next year had helped him when younger and how they are still helping today. Callum also talked about an amazing trip to South America where he taught children in remote places to play the drums. June Webb

WHAT’S ON

Mole Valley Probus Club JUNE EVENTS

Summer is now upon us and the year is flying by. The club would usually have been busy with country walks, club lunches, and coach outings but has been restrained by Covid. For June, two of the increasingly popular on-line talks for club members are arranged by our Bookham Speakers Secretary, Terry Hulme. On the 10th at 4 for 4.15 p.m. Don Chiswell will present “Railway Manias”. On the 16th, same time, we have Major Julian Thompson’s “D-Day”. Two club charity donations have been made this year and our next donation is already agreed. This will be to the hard working Brigitte Trust, holder of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. We now plan for a restart to our coach outings, country walks, pub lunches, London concerts and a return to our friendly and active club social life. A pre Covid club outing to the WW2 Fighter Command HQ at Bentley Priory

We’re one of the largest Probus clubs in Surrey, with membership open to retired professional and business men and women. Our activities are recorded by our webmaster and can be seen at: molevalleyprobus.btck.co.uk and if interested in joining, our Secretary is waiting to hear from you at: butlers917@btinternet.com

The Probus Club of Ashtead After over 12 months of great talks via Zoom, Ashtead Probus’ thoughts are turning towards welcoming back members to our regular venue, Tyrrells Wood Golf Club. We can’t give a date yet, but rest assured that we are liaising with TWGC staff to maximise the safety and comfort of our members and speakers. And we particularly look forward to catching up in person with friends old and new over a delicious lunch. In the meantime, our Zoom talks continue. This month our subject is ‘Images of Sunlight: Impressionist Paintings’. Coming up we have talks on subjects as diverse as the battle of the Alamo, London Underground, and two tours of the States by Greyhound Bus – 50 years apart. Retired professional and business men looking for a diversion from their routine should contact our Secretary Stephen Bridges on 07806 791774 or stephen@ bridgesuk.com. As you walk between gardens, do look out for beautifully decorated Blue Hearts, indicating a road verge of lovely flowers to attract pollinators that are so important for biodiversity. Open Gardens Day raises money for the upkeep of our historic Old Barn Hall, and over the years we have raised over £65,000. We are planning to serve our normal delicious home-baked cakes, rolls and drinks throughout the day at the Hall but our exact offering will be decided nearer the time depending on restrictions in place at the time. Who knows, it might be refreshments al fresco. Plants should be available to buy at the Allotments, The Grange and some of the gardens. Tickets on sale from 15th June: £7 in advance from

the outlets below. Children u16 - free. Wheelchair users £5, carers free. Include admission to all gardens and a programme with details/map. Regret no dogs other than assistance dogs. Sorry no minibus service this year. • The Vineries Garden Centre, Lower Rd, Effingham (event sponsors) • Wishing Well, 7 High Street, Bookham • Bungalow Stores, Beckley Parade, Leatherhead Rd • Old Barn Hall office, Church Rd, KT23 3PQ. Tel: 01372 456307 (open Mon, Wed, Fri 9:30 - noon) • Outside The Crown on 19 & 26th June (9.30 – noon) On the day you can buy tickets (£8) at the Old Barn Hall or at the first garden you visit. We will have contactless payment available at the Old Barn Hall and for our team selling tickets outside The Crown. If you’re paying in cash, we’d appreciate if you can find the exact change, particularly at the individual gardens. Duck Feed Available at the reopened Princess Alice Hospice Shop With lock-down easing, we are delighted that the Princess Alice Hospice Trust shop (PAH) has reopened in Cobham and has restocked on healthy, nutritious duck feed for our feathered friends at Riverhill. Be minded that, as recommended by the Canal & River Trust amongst others, a balanced diet as provided by the duck feed supplied by the Cobham Conservation and Heritage Trust and sold by the PAH, is better for the ducks and better for the Eco System of Riverhill. Also bear in mind that the packaging is compostable and recyclable and, like all other litter, should be taken home and recycled or composted responsibly. Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - JUNE 2021

Loxwood Joust Goes Immersive For Its 10th Anniversary The UK’s most spectacular medieval festival, Loxwood Joust, is stepping up a gear in 2021 with a new participatory element for its 10-year anniversary. Teaming up with immersive event’s organiser Mostly Harmless Creations (Crystal Maze Live, Knightmare Live), the Loxwood Joust will this year expand upon its already packed agenda of fast-paced jousting, battle re-enactments and musical performances, to offer guests the chance to step inside this year’s story. Visitors will get to know the lords, ladies, knights and peasants; rub shoulders with the Royal Court and help decide the fate of the ne’er-do-wells that roam the kingdom. Guests will enter the realm via the magical forest and be met by an array of colourful characters; each with a story to tell, rumours to spread or a favour to ask. Accept the right invitations, choose a quest and become an official ‘Citizen of Loxwood’ in this unique experience. Danny Bacon, organiser of the Loxwood Joust explained: ‘With 10 exciting years to celebrate, we’re providing opportunities for the whole family to participate in the Loxwood Joust rather than just to spectate. We know from feedback that people love interacting with the Joust’s characters. So, with a

44 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - JUNE 2021

quest to become an official ‘Citizen of Loxwood,’ and the chance to have an impact on the outcomes of this year’s story, we are proud to say this will be a first for a festival of this kind.’ ‘People want to take part as much as watch, these days,’ says Mostly Harmless Creations Artistic Director Paul Flannery. ‘That’s what we do: we create a framework to allow people to get as involved as they want in the world and the stories we’re telling. It’s the age of play.’ Festivalgoers will be able to learn from the medieval characters who live in the battle camp, wander the grounds and become entwined in this year’s stories and outcomes. And add-on experiences for 2021 include: • Handfasting ceremonies • Blacksmithing workshops • Sword school (in the children’s kingdom) • Copper bowl making • Chain mail making • Singing workshops with the Medieval Baebes • Medieval banquets Experiences must be booked in advance when booking tickets at www.loxwoodjoust.co.uk. The Loxwood Joust is excellently located just off the B2133 between Wisborough Green and Loxwood and has ample Free Parking.

HOME WANTED! Lily

5 yr old tortoiseshell Lily came into care as she was unfortunately being picked on by another local cat. Her owners made the difficult decision that it was better for Lily to be happy in a new home where she could be more relaxed. Lily has a great character; she is very chatty, enjoys playing and loves a cuddle (on her terms!). Lily has a delicate disposition and copes better on a certain diet so needs an owner who is prepared to manage that. As with all great characters Lily can be contrary so she is best suited to an experienced, adult only, quiet home. No other pets and a safe, enclosed garden for her to explore. In return Lily will be great company and is really looking to form a special bond with the right people. If you think you may be able to offer Lily her forever home please get in touch on 0345 260 1387 or adoption@epsom.cats.org.uk

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead Front of house When freedom is restricted, the freedoms that remain become hugely important. We re-evaluate what is important to us. Over the past year and a half, many activities have been curtailed – holidays, cinema visits, seeing friends and family have been cancelled or postponed. We have all coped in our own way but a common thread has been the need to get out of the house, often into green and open spaces. Parks and common areas have been packed with people walking, kids of all sizes on bikes and dog walkers. Indeed, humans have evolved to love – and need – exposure to the natural world. This may explain why we prefer to live in places with green views. It’s been shown that regardless of culture, people gravitate to views of nature. In Japan, they have a name for it - shinrin-yoku, or forest bathing – which is believed to reduce stress and promote wellbeing. This resonates with me - when I’ve been out walking, I always get home in a better mood. But as well as making us feel good, connecting with nature tends to make us more concerned about the environment. And whatever actions we each take about that can add up to big changes. Those of us lucky enough to have a garden can use it to encourage wild life. Little things like leaving some areas of lawn un-mown will spontaneously produce wild flowers – the patch on my front lawn has produced the usual dandelions, daisies and wild thyme but also cowslips, and last year I had an orchid! And last autumn I scattered some poppy seeds I collected on a walk, so I’m looking forward to seeing if they have germinated. In built-up areas like ours, front drives are often paved to provide parking spaces. Can you reduce the paved area and create patches for things to grow by removing a few paving bricks or slabs? Or maybe you can add pots or containers if the paving is wall to wall? In 2015, the percentage of fully paved drives was 28%, in 2020 it was 13%, so it seems people are switching from grey to green. How much greener could your front garden be? Can you grow evergreen shrubs for winter greenery? Let ivy grow on fences to provide winter berries, grubs and shelter for birds? In urban areas like ours, a theatrical array of bushes and flowers ‘front of house’ will be seen and appreciated by people doing a ‘pavement walk’ past your home. See the Facebook group ‘Wild About Fetcham’ for more information and inspiration about wilding your garden. Clapping for Carers was an opportunity to meet the neighbours – but so is pottering around in the front garden weeding or watering. And ‘starting small’ with your front garden may inspire you and admiring passing pedestrians to do more ‘greening’ round the back, creating havens for wildlife and tranquility for humans. JUNE BOOK REVIEWS

Ashtead Library has these books to reserve, come & put your name down. Woodfield Lane, Ashtead, Surrey KT21 2BQ

The Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman Cosy crime at its best! Richard Osman’s first thriller is the must-read book of the summer. Every Thursday the amateur sleuths of Cooper’s Chase gather in the jigsaw room to investigate unsolved murder cases that the Kent police force have been unable to solve. When a local developer is found dead with a mysterious photograph left next to the body, the Thursday Murder Club suddenly find themselves in the middle of their first live case and as the bodies begin to pile up, can the members of the club catch the killer, before it’s too late? Osman’s book is an excellent read, and hard to put down. Part of me wanted to read it in one sitting, the other part of me wanted to make it last as long as possible! Thank goodness the next book in the series, The Man Who Died Twice, is out in September!

Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens Where the Crawdads Sing tells the story of Kya, the ‘Marsh Girl’, who was abandoned as a child by her family and ostracised by people who should have helped her, growing up in the marshes in Barkley Cove, North Carolina in the 1950’s. Kya is a naturalist and artist, but treated with suspicion by the local people, so when a young man’s body is found she is accused of his murder and put on trial. The whole book is wonderful; a story of survival in the face of prejudice, poverty and loneliness. A profound coming of age story mixed with a haunting mystery. Every now and again, you read a book that simply blows you away. Where the Crawdads Sing is not only superbly written, but moving and intense. A book for everyone’s list.

Raceless by Georgina Lawton A true story and debut book by journalist, Georgina Lawton. The book is about the author’s personal experience of being born mixed race in a white family in Sutton, Surrey. Georgina was raised by white parents and her brown skin was attributed to a “throwback gene” from an olive-skinned ancestor. When her father tragically dies of cancer, she tests an old sample of his DNA and learns that she is not his. This well-written book is about friendship, family, identity and secrets themes that everyone can relate to if even the story itself is pretty unique. Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - JUNE 2021

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

‘I SHALL NOT BE LONG AWAY’ Military history researcher ANDREW TATHAM gave a moving Zoom talk in April based on the letters of Lt Col Charles Bartlett, second in command to Andrew’s great grandfather, Brig Gen William Walton, on the Western Front from August 1915 to March 1917. The letters home to Bartlett’s wife were largely uncensored and full of incident, described with directness and bluff humour. They all appear in Andrew’s second book entitled I Shall Not be Long Away - a quotation from one letter - which followed his first book, A Group Photograph Before, Now and In Between. Both books were inspired by a single photo from the Imperial War Museum showing the 8th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment during training on Salisbury Plain in May 1915. Andrew researched the fates and lives of every man in the photo - 46 in all. Over half were either killed or injured in battles. He contacted relatives of all 46 and researched their family trees. Of those shown, only Andrew’s ancestor was a regular soldier at the outbreak of war. Others included businessmen, students, and lawyers, as well as a vicar, a teacher, an artist, and a poet and critic. Among them were the sons of an explorer, a tobacconist’s traveller, the first Bishop in Persia, a biscuit factory machinist, an egg merchant, a gardener’s labourer, and a physics professor. Some had travelled from across the empire to fight for Britain. Only 21 survived the war and some had their lives Andrew Tatham

54 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - JUNE 2021

shortened as a result of injuries. By the end of the war, none of the men in the photo were serving in the field. They had either been killed, relinquished their commissions, or been posted to other units. Andrew went as far as South Africa to trace Bartlett’s family and eventually located a relative who provided no fewer than 341 of his wartime letters. He was among those who survived the war. Two who did not were William Hobbs and William Bissley, killed respectively at Loos and the Somme in September 1915 and August 1916. Hobbs, a solicitor, was never recovered. His parents commissioned a stained glass window in his memory in Richmond Presbyterian Church. Bissley had recently married after working to improve his social standing with his bride’s family. After a two-day honeymoon and a second brief leave, he had returned to the front and his death as his wife was going into labour. Andrew met Bissley’s daughter and overcame her reluctance to discuss the father she had never known. Her own daughters later visited him with a letter about their lost grandfather.

8th Royal Berkshires May 1915

Donald Stileman was mentioned too by Bartlett, injured first at Loos and then losing an arm on the Somme. But unlike the others he survived the war and went on to have a long and successful family life and working for the Forestry Commission. He died aged 94 in 1989. His gravestone in Hampshire reads: ‘Greatly Loved, Man of the Trees’. For more on the L&DLHS go to www.leatherheadhistory.org.

Monday May 17 heralded the welcome news members could meet again in groups of six, and this was celebrated with a wine tasting in member’s gardens - the first in a series of monthly summer garden meetings. With European holiday plans restricted, and the promised ‘green lights’ providing only a glimmer of certainty and safety, we decided to bring the delights of European wines to Bookham. In May, members enjoyed three carefully chosen French wines supplied by Laithwaite’s in Surbiton. The first, a celebratory fizz in the form of a Cremant. A really great value alternative to Champagne. Then, a Muscadet Sevre et Maine sur lie, Reserve. Laithwaite’s say they plan to put Muscadet back at the

top of the charts, and this wine did not disappoint. Our final wine was a ‘red,’ a top cuvee, two gold medal winner - ‘Cour De Granit Moulin-a-Vent’ from Beaujolais’s most loved cru. Intense, ripe, red and blackberry fruit with silky tannins. A fitting end to a very enjoyable afternoon! Through the summer months, we plan to ‘visit’ Portugal, Italy, and Spain and taste their ‘stand out’ wines. Then in September, we return to the Old Barn Hall, with our professional presenters returning to entertain us. For details on any aspect of Wine Club activities, and perhaps attend a meeting, please email membership@bookhamwineclub.org.uk or visit our website: www.bookhamwineclub.org.uk

HAMPTON COURT PALACE GARDEN FESTIVAL

Highlights Announced for the return of the UK’s Biggest Garden Festival

The Royal Horticultural Society’s (RHS) Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival supported by Viking will be back to transform the grounds of Hampton Court Palace from 5 - 11 July. Following the resurgence in gardening across the nation in 2020, the UK’s biggest festival of flowers will focus on gardening for everyone and celebrate all things ‘grow your own’ as the nation welcomes back outdoor events. After the huge increase in people growing their own produce, 2021’s Festival will introduce the RHS Allotment area providing tips, advice and information on all things ‘grow your own’. Festival-goers will be able to attend talks and practical demonstrations throughout the week and get growing inspiration from allotment plots built by community groups and grow your own experts. The festival continues to highlight key issues and environmental challenges within the Global Impact Gardens category. Global Garden - Game Over? by designer William Butterworth will raise awareness of climate change, featuring charred trees, burnt ground and interactive stepping stones as it hopes to inspire visitors to take action. Meanwhile Tracy Foster will focus on issues of plastic pollution in our gardens,

canals and rivers, depicting a large floating bottle with plants to represent the species used to make natural alternatives to plastic. The Floral Marquee supported by St. James’s Place Wealth Management will be brimming with plants from nurseries from all over the UK with an array of species and cultivars, including first time exhibitors Alchemy Ferns and Kells Bay House and Garden. Hardy’s Cottage Garden Plants who have exhibited at every RHS Hampton Court since its very first show will take centre stage as Master Grower and visitors can immerse themselves in some of the finest roses in the Festival of Roses. Rebecca Welti, RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival Manager, says: “We are thrilled to be able to bring the festival back to the grounds of Hampton Court Palace. It is the garden festival for everyone; it provides so much inspiration for avid and new gardeners alike with lots of exciting displays and plenty to get involved in, all within the beautiful setting of the palace.” For further information on the gardens and exhibitors or to buy tickets, please visit the RHS website at www.rhs.org.uk/hamptoncourt.
