What an absolutely wonderful time of year this is! Plenty of pretty blossoms on the trees locally, longer days with brighter evenings and all being well, some better weather in store too! We have lots of local news to share this month with a full selection of events on our What’s On pages too. Plus news from the Fairfield Centre in Leatherhead, as they celebrate 40 years since they first opened their doors in 1982! See page 13 for more on that. Exciting news from one of our regular advertisers, the Fire & Iron Gallery, who will shortly provide the venue for the Blacksmithing section of the The Princes Master Crafters to be screened on Sky Arts TV in May! (Exact details on timings are not available at time of going to print) Ashtead Good Neighbours are keen to help local people in need, they have a team of willing volunteers who are ready to come to your assistance with lifts to medical appointments, a bit of shopping or some simple DIY. They are a lovely bunch of local people who would be happy to help you in your hour of need and they are all DBS checked too. See page 20 if you, or someone you know, could benefit from a helping hand. News of a few art related events / projects this month too; art-rabble.org is a local, social enterprise who sell fine art prints by artists with disabilities. These artists are truly inspirational so please do take a moment to find out more by turning to page 22. Also on an arty note, It will soon be time for the ‘Leatherhead Art Trail’. This is certainly a very lovely event, see page 36 for details. We have some very talented people locally, who deserve our support, and this is well worth exploring. There is plenty more for you to discover within our pages, way too much to include here, so I will leave you to browse…. Wishing you all a great month, With Best Regards,

FETCHAM RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATION FOR ALL COMMUNITY, INFORMATION, HELP AND SUPPORT VISIT: WWW.FETCHAMRESIDENTS.CO.UK EMAIL: CHAIRMAN@FETCHAMRESIDENTS.CO.UK 100th birthday - An unremarkable building

just across the road from Fetcham Village Infant School is the home of a charity that has some 8,000 clients, 120 full and part time staff and an annual budget of £2.7 million. And this year it is celebrating its centenary. The charity is Sight for Surrey and its chief executive is Bob Hughes, formerly a minister in John Major’s government: “We support blind, vision impaired, deaf, deaf blind, and hard of hearing people across the county. Our aim is to arm each of them with the knowledge, equipment and confidence to help them live an independent life,” he says. The charity was founded as the Surrey Voluntary Association for the Blind in the aftermath of the First World War. Its first task was to set up a register and it identified 500 people in Surrey needing financial support. In 1970 the association took over a room in the newly vacated Rentwood House in School Lane, owned by Surrey County Council, but until not long before the HQ of the pest control firm Rentokil. Since then it has steadily expanded and now occupies most of the building, becoming Sight for Surrey in 2014. Inside are social workers, eye clinic liaison

officers, hearing loss advisers, communicator guides, rehabilitation experts for adults, habilitation experts for children, IT advisers, fundraisers and recreation organisers. A dispensing optician gives advice on equipment, and the stock of 450 items ranges from digital magnifiers to a gadget that beeps when your coffee cup is getting too full. “The key to what we do is personalisation of services,” says Bob. “We give people the opportunities and then help them to do things they want to do.” The activities they organise include sailing, ice skating and sky diving, although these things can only be funded from charitable giving.

OPEN DAY MAY 4th - Everyone is welcome to celebrate and find out more about the charity at the Sight for Surrey Open Day at Rentwood on May 4th. It will be in two parts, with workshops, talks and demonstrations in the morning from 11 am, and an ‘open house’ with refreshments from 1pm. If you wish to contact Sight for Surrey you can email info@sightforsurrey.org.uk, call 01372

Celebrating

40 YEARS of the

FAIRFIELD CENTRE!

Fairfield Centre 40th - members enjoying the celebrations

This March marked 40 years since the opening of Mole Valley District Council’s (MVDC) Fairfield Centre in Leatherhead. Originally opened as the “Leatherhead Day Centre” in 1982, the Fairfield Centre has offered a home from home and place for the older residents of Mole Valley to come together to socialise, exercise, learn new skills, partake in activities and make new friends for two score years. To celebrate, during the week commencing 28th March the Fairfield Centre ran daily, pre-booked celebratory three course lunches and additional entertainment for its members. Celebratory entertainment included an 80s themed quiz, “Songs you remember” singalong and a reminiscence session to name but a few. These sessions ran in addition to a number of the Fairfield Centre’s usual activities, including exercise, IT and art classes, as well as word games and puzzles sessions. MVDC’s Executive Head of Service (Communities), Rachel O’Reilly said, “For 40 years now we have been fortunate enough to have the Fairfield Centre in Leatherhead to provide a welcoming environment for Mole Valley’s older residents. The Centre delivers a stimulating programme of daily activities, as

Fairfield Centre 40th Jim, the longest standing Fairfield Centre member cutting the celebratory cake

well as delicious, healthy and affordable meals. The ongoing pandemic has really shone a light on the importance of social connections for health and wellbeing. Whilst our older residents were advised to shield or reduce their number of contacts, the Fairfield Centre switched to a programme of Zoom get-togethers to help keep members connected and boost their spirits. During this period they also conducted over 7,000 wellbeing calls to their members, offering a friendly voice during a difficult time. As restrictions have been eased Mole Valley District Council have gradually reopened the Centre; from our outdoor ‘Terrace Café’ last April, through to today, where we have been running our programme of varied activities, entertainment and nutritious hot meals for many months now. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Fairfield Centre team and its volunteers for their hard work and dedication in supporting Mole Valley’s older residents.” If you would like to find out more about the Fairfield Centre and becoming a member, please call 01372 376058, email Fairfield.Centre@molevalley.gov.uk or visit molevalleylife.co.uk. WORKING FOR ASHTEAD SINCE 1945

Mole Valley Local Plan 2020-2037 - The Local Plan is now with the Planning Inspectorate for independent examination by the appointed Inspectors, Roisin Barratt (Hons) MSc MRTPI IHBC and Beverley Wilders BA (Hons) PgDurp MRTPI. They will determine whether it has been prepared in accordance with the relevant legal requirements and that it is ‘sound’ - i.e. positively prepared, justified, effective and consistent with national planning policy. There is no way of knowing how long the examination will take or who may be called to attend meetings with the Inspectors on any of the objections that have been raised over the Plan. We have been advised by MVDC that the Inspectors will examine the Plan on a subjectby-subject basis with each taking a separate subject to examine. This may result in interested parties being called to attend meetings with the Inspectors on more than one occasion. An issue that most concerns ARA, along with the Residents’ Associations in Bookham, Fetcham and Leatherhead is the provision of the infrastructure that will be needed to cope with the proposed level of development in North Mole Valley. We have asked for assurances from MVDC that infrastructure will be in place before development occurs and we have been advised that consideration is being given to addressing infrastructure needs through Section 106 Agreements. These are legal agreements between Local Authorities and developers that are linked to planning permissions and can also be known as planning obligations. These agreements are drafted when it is considered that a development will have a significant impact on the local area such that they require something stronger than simply attaching planning conditions to a planning application. The agreements cover: Public Open Space; Affordable Housing; Education; Highways; Town Centre Improvements and Health. Be 14 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - MAY 2022

assured that ARA will be watching this closely as development plans come forward once the Local Plan has been adopted (perhaps in late 2023). We will put updates on the progress of the Examination on our website as information comes to light. Step into Mole Valley - Mole Valley District Council has asked us to publicise their “Step into Mole Valley” initiative, which launched in early Spring with details in the Council’s press release of “24 of the best walks in and around the Surrey Hills, with something for everyone including buggy-friendly/accessible paths, heritage trails, routes for nature-lovers and dog walkers, and the best picture-perfect walks for stunning countryside views. In a post-pandemic drive to boost health and wellbeing and to support the local economy, residents and visitors are invited to step into the great outdoors and explore everything the district has to offer including historical buildings, pretty villages and historic market towns with thriving shops, pubs, cafes and restaurants, one of the UK’s largest wine estates, plus lots and lots of charming countryside. Test out a much drier and less wobbly version of the famous Stepping Stones River Mole crossing in Dorking by visiting our brand new 3D pavement stickers, located outside Dorking Halls and replicated at the entrance to the Swan Centre shopping centre in Leatherhead (outside the Mole Valley Employment & Skills Hub).” Visit http://molevalleytogether.co.uk/ stepintomolevalley/ for information on all of the walks. You’ll find mention there of two walks in and around Ashtead: Ashtead Heritage Trail, which is described as an “historical village walk featuring low level architecture” and The Star and Ashtead Common Circular – “a circular pub walk featuring a lakeside setting”. Enjoy! Glynis Peterkin - Chairman

Password Security AAlmost every day we have clients calling up and needing our help ASAP because their email accounts have been compromised. A scammer has gained access to their email account and started sending out malicious emails and gaining access to personal information. Most of the time the user hasn’t done anything wrong to allow access by the scammer. So, what went wrong and how did this happen? One simple mistake that so many computer users still make. An insecure password! Using a simple password and then using that same password for multiple websites is an almost guaranteed way to make it easy for scammers to access your email or other accounts. It’s almost every week we hear about another large organisation’s data leak leading to more logins and passwords being revealed to scammers. Often these leaked passwords find their way onto the dark web and scammers then try using each leaked password to gain access to email accounts. If you want to check and see if any passwords of yours have been leaked you can use the website; haveibeenpwned. com to check. If you enter your email address the website will let you know if you have ever been part of a data breach or passwords leak. If you have don’t panic, almost everyone at some point in their digital life will have a password leaked. The website will tell you on what date the information was leaked. If you haven’t updated your email password since the latest leak and you do use the same password for other accounts then we would recommend updating your email password as soon as you can to a new unique password and remember to use symbols, capital letters and numbers to keep it as secure as possible. Making sure your email passwords are not being used for any other websites or services is your best way to stay secure. Really it’s best practice to use a different password for each service or online account you have, to protect yourself. These are bold, passionate artists who despite every set back, every challenge, are still there, honing their skills, triumphing every day. That’s the spirit and the grit that sets our artwork apart. A community fridge takes food which would otherwise go to waste and makes it available to anyone who can use it. Mid Surrey Community Fridges (MSCF) operates 17 Community Fridge sessions and Mobile Fridge Stops each week, at locations as far apart as Ewell and Capel; where they have become important meeting places for regulars and often a place where people can get social support and advice. MSCF collects food from all the major supermarket chains in the area and many independent businesses. At the heart of MSCF is a team of dedicated, enthusiastic volunteers who keep the show on the road, this includes Frontline- drivers, hub assistants, and Back office - warehouse assistants, and admin assistants (various departments). We are always looking for volunteers across all areas. Currently we are desperately in need of Warehouse and Van loading assistants. This can be from as little as a couple of hours a week. Please contact volunteers@midsurreycommunityfridges.co.uk for more information or to apply. It really will make a difference to the environment and your community.

Skills for Life Learning, laughing and living your best life

CAN YOU HELP?

THE SENSORY GARDEN NEEDS YOUR SPARE PLANTS! Our Skills for Life programme equips people with disabilities, with the knowledge and confidence they need to realise their aspirations.

www.grangecentre.org.uk Email: info@grangecentre.org.uk Tel: 01372 452 608

A group of volunteers has recently taken on the project to renovate the Sensory Garden within the grounds of The Grange at Bookham. The garden was originally created in 2011, around an existing rectangular pond. Raised beds were added along with wooden arches, a new pavilion, which is now used as a pottery studio, and lots of plants. Sensory gardens are planted with sight, sound, taste, smell and touch in mind. The original planting included heuchera and salvia, which stimulate the senses through the colour of their flowers and foliage; rosemary for its smell and taste, as its highly fragrant leaves can be used in cooking; lavender and honeysuckle for their wonderful scent, and stachys, with its lovely downy leaves that are soft to the touch. 10 years on and the garden has significantly matured, and many of the larger shrubs have outgrown their spaces. Sadly, the wooden arches have rotted and have had to be 32 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - MAY 2022

removed. The new gardener has been busy and when the volunteers arrived for their first look at the project, new metal arches had replaced the wooden ones, and many of the climbing plants had been given a serious prune. The volunteer group got going early in January and have spent most of their time to date cutting back all the larger shrubs, pruning the roses, weeding all the beds, and trying to identify some of the plants which are starting to grow. The initial plan is to maintain the garden while the plants reveal themselves, and then add plants as the year progresses. There is plenty of room for additional planting and therefore the group is asking for donations of plants, and bulbs (which have finished flowering) which fit in with the sensory theme. Please contact Hilary at hrnicholls15@gmail.com if you have any suitable plants going spare at any point during the growing season.

WHAT’S ON

THE ARTS SOCIETY ASHTEAD

The Arts Society Ashtead provides fascinating talks on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Peace Memorial Hall as well as visits to places of interest and cultural tours.

Tuesday 17th May 2022 (talk at 10.30, doors open 9.30 for coffee)

The Art & Crafts of Kashmir

Kashmir conjures up a beautiful valley surrounded by the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas, albeit sometimes a land of conflict. It has been of historic artistic importance for nearly 2000 years. We will explore the astonishing diversity of arts and crafts produced in this tiny area, influenced by Buddhist, Hindu and Islamic cultures. A land of sculptures, temples, gardens, paintings, calligraphy, carpets and shawls. Despite its troubled history, Kashmir has fostered a unique environment of artistic diversity and religious co-existence. For the remainder of 2022, The Arts Society Ashtead will be offering another packed programme, with our ever-popular monthly arts-related talks, as well as four visits to places of interest, a Special Interest Day, and a Cultural Tour to the Bournemouth area in October. Find out more from our website: tas.ashtead@gmail.com

Ashtead and Leatherhead Probus is the club for local retired or semi-retired professional and business men. The club continues the best traditions of its predecessors, the individual Probus clubs of the two local communities. We meet for lunch on the third Monday of the month at Tyrrells Wood Golf Club, followed by an interesting and entertaining talk. We also enjoy monthly informal lunches at local pubs; a walking group; and visits to local places of interest. On Monday May 16th our talk will be

“Concorde, Icon of the Skies” presented by Guy Bartlett.

Prospective members and male or female guests will be warmly welcomed at all our events. If you have come to that stage of life and are looking for a new challenge or maybe improving on an existing one then the u3a is the place for you. The Leatherhead and District u3a has over 240 members with around 30 different interest groups. We have a variety of topics covered in these groups from canasta to Spanish and cribbage to croquet. Each group is run by one of the members and, in the case of the walking group, a different member will arrange the walk. Our local history group is currently carrying out research into the local Public Houses in the area. There is always something new to learn. At our next meeting on the 19th May we will be finding out about the work of The Lower Mole Partnership from Conor Morrow, senior partnership officer, and the countryside improvements carried out by them in North Surrey. Also in May we are holding a recruitment day on the 7th from 10am to 4pm in the Swan Centre. This is an ideal opportunity to meet some of the members and learn more about us. Please feel free to speak to us on the day. We will have a number of displays and information, as well as balloons and bunting (in the organisations colours of yellow and blue) which you cannot miss. For any further information please contact me on dandswall@btinternet.com or 01372 374773. David Wall - Vice Chairman.

BOOKHAM

CLUB

Bookham Flower Club is up and running and thriving again. The members have been enjoying demonstrations of floral art by a variety of excellent presenters. They give good tips and advice, name the flowers and foliage whilst producing five or six beautiful large arrangements around a theme. New members are always made welcome and soon make friends. Members

can enter the club’s monthly competition illustrating that month’s title in flowers and foliage. It is interesting how many different interpretations there can be! The different classes of ability give everyone a chance to win but also to learn and progress. Occasional workshops help with this too. For some, just the enjoyment of flowers with those with similar interests is enough.

Our next meetings are Mondays 6th June and 4th July at 2.00pm in the Old Barn Hall in Church Road, Great Bookham. Do give us a try as a visitor for just £8. Just turn up on the day or for more information email us at: bookhamflowerclub@gmail.com

Working Towards a Sustainable Ashtead Blue hearts popping up in Surrey! If you drive along the A246 from Fetcham to Effingham you might have wondered why blue heart signs are popping up on the grass verges. It’s a campaign that started a few years ago to encourage people to leave areas of grass uncut; the blue heart sign is a way of marking the area - blue stands out against green grass. The charity Plantlife lobbies and gives presentations to councils across the UK about the benefits to pollinators and wildlife of reducing the cutting regime on road grass verges. Some councils, such as Dorset, have embraced the idea, and have seeded wide verges of major new roads with native wildflower and grass seed mixes. Dorset council also invested in ‘cut-and-collect’ machinery to remove the arisings from the last autumn cut; this reduces the fertility of the soil, and benefits wildflowers, which can otherwise be out-competed by tougher, fast-growing grass and plants. Diane and Steve Poole, two Bookham residents, started their own campaign in 2020 after watching with utter dismay Surrey County Council (SCC) contractors mowing off all the cowslips, orchids and other wildflowers. Roll on to 2022 and their campaign has not only spread to Fetcham and Effingham, but also to SCC who have adopted the Blue Heart campaign across Surrey. Like dandelion seeds, the message is spreading on the wind! The Surrey Wild Flowering Partnership is a community-led initiative aimed to build a partnership that enables wild flowering in our county as well as promoting and celebrating the boroughs/districts’ diverse environments. Insects have declined by 50% in the last fifty years, mainly driven by the loss of habitat including wildflower meadows. You can help reverse this trend by allowing an area of your lawn to grow, - daisies, dandelions, clovers and other wildflowers will appear quite naturally once mowing has stopped. If you have a grass verge outside your house, you can apply on the SCC website to reduce the mowing to just two cuts a year. Before choosing a site, consider issues such as sight-lines on junctions. It’s a good idea to talk to your neighbours too - maybe they would like to do the same. Wildflower verges provide a natural, nectar-rich corridor for insects to travel between open green spaces, as do our gardens. Wildflowers provide so much interest themselves, as well as encourage visiting bees, butterflies and insects. For more information contact: fetchambluehearts@gmail.com Plant a ‘Blue Heart’ and have a blooming good summer!

SIGNING OF ARMED

FORCES COVENANT

BY HEAD OF SURREY FREEMASONS

Col Patrick Crowley MBE, DL & Ian Chandler, Head of Surrey Freemasons

The Armed Forces Covenant has been signed by Col Patrick Crowley MBE, DL and Ian Chandler, Head of Surrey Freemasons, at Holy Trinity Church in Guildford. The Ceremony was attended by local dignitaries from across Surrey, including Councillor Sushila Abraham, the Mayor of the Royal Borough of Kingston. The Armed Forces Covenant is a pledge with the Nation that together we acknowledge and understand that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy, and society they serve with their lives. It focusses on helping members of the armed forces community have the same access to government and commercial services and products as any other citizen. This support is provided in many areas including education and family well-being, having a home, starting a new career, access to healthcare, financial assistance, and discounted services. The Covenant supports serving personnel, service leavers, veterans, and their families,

and is fulfilled by the different groups and communities that have committed to making a difference. Surrey Freemasons have now become one of those groups. At the ceremony, Ian Chandler, Head of Surrey Freemasons, said: “It is a great pleasure for me to sign the Armed Forces Covenant on behalf of the United Grand Lodge of England. Our Lodges, through the centuries, have always had a close relationship with those who serve in the armed forces. Servicemen have found that our values of Integrity, Friendship, Respect and Charity are a natural fit with their own and many ex-servicemen comment that the camaraderie they find in a Lodge is second only to that they have experienced whilst serving. It is also true to say that the experiences and friendships that they form help a much wider cross-section of society better understand the military, its ethos, and its purpose. I am delighted to have formally recognised, in (the signing of) this document, the relationship that has always existed between our great institutions.” Colin Pizey - Comm’s Officer

BOOKHAM OPEN GARDENS DAY SUNDAY 26TH JUNE, 10AM – 5PM

Do come and join in this annual event where lots of people enjoy going round the village, meeting friends and neighbours along the way. This year we are featuring around 14 varied and attractive private gardens, including two who are opening for the first time. In addition, we welcome back Polesden Lacey Infants School (after an absence of some years), the Grange Centre (with its Victorian walled garden) and Little Bookham Allotments. As usual, our garden owners will give you a warm welcome and provide you with the opportunity to pick up ideas for your own garden, answer your questions or you can simply enjoy the beautiful surroundings. The gardens come in all shapes and sizes, some formal, some more laid-back, and some with wildlife friendly planting and habitats. You’ll also find fruit and vegetables in abundance at the Grange and the Allotments and some gardens. Open Gardens Day raises money for the upkeep of our historic Old Barn Hall where delicious home-baked cakes, rolls and drinks will be served throughout the day and there will be plants for sale. In addition you can visit the Country Market stall.

Find out more about gardens in the programme which will be available at our ticket outlets or can be downloaded from mid May from our website at www.bookhamopengardens.co.uk. Sorry there will be no minibus service this year. Why not cycle, share a car, or just see how far you get walking. As you go between gardens, do look out for beautifully decorated Blue Hearts, indicating a verge of lovely flowers to attract pollinators that are so important for biodiversity. Tickets on sale from 23rd May: £7 in advance: • The Vineries Garden Centre, Lower Rd, Effingham (event sponsors) • Wishing Well, 7 High Street • Bungalow Stores, Beckley Parade, Leatherhead Rd • Old Barn Hall office, Church Rd, KT23 3PQ. Tel: 01372 456307 (open Mon, Wed, Fri 9:30 - noon) • Village Day, Sat 18th June, on the field On the day you can buy tickets (£8) at the Old Barn Hall and from the gardens themselves. Children under 16 are free, as are carers of wheelchair users (reduced rate of £5). Regret no dogs, other than assistance dogs. For more info look for ‘Bookham Open Gardens’ on Facebook, or contact Brenda Kent on 01372 453952 / Email: bnb.selworthy@btinternet.com

MAY BOOK REVIEWS Ashtead Library has these books to reserve, so come & put your name down. Woodfield Lane, Ashtead, Surrey KT21 2BQ

‘Unsettled Ground’ By Claire Fuller. This is a really charming read, one of sibling love and resilience. Adult twins Jeanie and Julius live in poverty - they are happy but life is hard. When their mother dies, they try to survive against many odds. During the harsh winter, as they bury their mother, they begin to discover lots of family secrets and feel betrayed by their mother who kept this information from them. They struggle to maintain their pride as they find love and passion in unlikely places. The story is an easy read, but it definitely conjures up images of their home and farm, with its clear description of the siblings life - especially when a further twist of fate comes their way.

‘Greenwich Park’ By Katherine Faulkner. This was a great read - I couldn’t put it down! Described as a ‘twisty, compulsive thriller about friendships, lies and the secrets we keep to protect ourselves’, it certainly held my attention as I raced to see how the plot would unfold. Just what does the brash Rachel want from protagonist Helen when she befriends her at an antenatal class? And what part do the rest of Helen’s family play in this gripping story? Can’t wait to read more from this author - I hope she already has book number two on the go!

‘Apples Never Fall ’ By Liane Moriarty. I was so excited when I saw that one of my favourite authors had a new book out and ‘Apples Never Fall’ did not disappoint - Liane Moriarty back at her best. Joy and Stan have a life to envy - a successful business behind them with a joyful retirement ahead of them, four wonderful grown-up children but then Joy vanishes seemingly without trace. What happened to her and what does the mysterious stranger who stayed with the Delaneys before vanishing herself have to do with it all? Brilliant characters and a great plot - this one comes highly recommended.

All books are available to reserve at Ashtead Library.

LEATHERHEAD LIBRARY

We have been very busy at Leatherhead Library with sewing and crafting this month. Some of us older members of staff remember learning how to darn and hem but even sewing on a button seems to be a challenge for some but not all the younger generation. To celebrate those skills and to encourage sustainability we held a ‘make do and mend’ session inviting attendees to bring in items to repair or revamp. Keep an eye out for similar events. Knit and natter sessions are planned. Children’s activities this month included our regular Rhymetime on a Saturday morning and for Mother’s Day Lois devised a super craft activity. Youngsters made a heart shaped gift bag together with a delightful Mother’s Day card. Keep an eye out for further events. They are always advertised on our social media. Have you ever wondered what to read next and looking for a recommendation? We are always happy to make suggestions. An alternative is our Book of the Week choice. These are specially selected and offer a wide contrast but are all jolly good reads. So do try one next time you are looking for something new.

Garden Shed and Vehicle Crime NEIL CLARKE, 13363 CRIME REDUCTION ADVISOR EASTERN DIVISION Hopefully, we can now start to look forward to some better weather as Spring is officially with us - at last!! We are also starting to see the world returning to something more like “normal” after the past two years of the Covid-19 pandemic and I am sure many people will be wanting to take advantage of being able to go out and about after enduring many restrictions? As summer approaches, however; if you decide to take advantage of the better weather by visiting some of the lovely beauty spots across Mole Valley, please remember not to leave any items of value in your vehicle. At this time of year, we generally start to receive reports of vehicles being targeted by opportunistic thieves and items (such as handbags, cash, cameras etc) taken from unattended vehicles - even if they were in the boot or hidden under the seats. We also tend to see a fairly constant (if low) level of reports about thefts of property - tools, gardening equipment, bicycles etc - from garden sheds and outbuildings. Please try to store your property securely. Although wooden sheds can never be made totally secure, a sturdy bolt and padlock does make you less likely to be targeted. Also, please consider security marking any high-value property or, if you are not overly worried about the actual appearance of a lawn mower etc, just painting your house number and postcode on the item can make it far less desirable to a would-be thief.

Another thing to consider is buying an inexpensive, battery-powered and motionactivated audible alarm to place inside the shed or outbuilding. If they are triggered by movement inside, the alarm will sound and quite often this gives the impression that it is connected to a main monitored alarm system. The batteries generally last about 12 months before they need to be replaced. As always, if you are going to be away from your home, please ensure that all doors and windows are securely locked and please don’t leave keys in the locks as this can be very tempting to a would-be burglar. Also, having some lights coming on using timers set to a staggered pattern can help to create an impression of occupancy and movement throughout a home. If you need to contact your local policing team, you can always email us at molevalley@surrey.police.uk or call 101 and ask to be put through to the Team. For all other non-emergency issues, please contact 101 or, in an emergency - or if you see a crime actually taking place - always call 999. Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - MAY 2022

THE LEATHERHEAD & DISTRICT LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY

EDWARD LEAR IN ASHTEAD AND LEATHERHEAD Victorian artist, illustrator, writer, poet and musician Edward Lear (1812 - 1888) was a regular visitor to this part of Surrey for much of his life. He loved walking in the local countryside Edward Lear which inspired some of his poetry including the famous nonsense verse. He first became acquainted with the Hon Mary Greville Howard of Ashtead Park before 1834. Later in 1847 his sister, Eleanor, wife of Bank of England Governor William Newsom, moved with her husband into No 1 The Lilacs, also known as 25 Church Road, Leatherhead. She remained after his death in 1859 until her own in March 1885 at the ripe old age of 85. The Lears’ missionary brother Charles also lived at that house for some three years with his African wife Adjouah. He was taken seriously ill in West Africa and Edward Lear sketches 1864 ordered home on 60 Ashtead&LeatherheadLocal - MAY 2022

the first available ship. Adjouah volunteered to accompany him as his nurse, an offer he accepted provided they first married to protect her honour. She attended a local school in Leatherhead to learn English. They eventually returned to Africa. On 19 August 1869, Edward Lear was a guest of Mrs Greville-Howard at Ashtead Park when he wrote to Frances, Countess Waldegrave: “I came here for two nights and return to misery to-morrow. Ever since 1834 I have always been used to come to Mrs Greville Howard’s, who all that time has been a very unvarying good friend. She is now more than 84 but is as bright and amiable as ever.....she is one of the finest specimens of the Grand English Lady of the olden time I have known. [She left him £100 in her 1874 Will.] “Meanwhile the park is much as it used to be 30 years ago, so that I shall go and walk among the deer as I did then; and so my one day of idleness will go by without much growling on my part.” Recollections of Ashtead Park’s deer may have inspired his poem: “And those who watch at that midnight hour From Hall or Terrace, or lofty Tower, Cry, as the wild light passes along, ‘The Dong! - the Dong! The wandering Dong through the forest goes! The Dong! the Dong! The Dong with a luminous Nose!’”
