First, I wish to thank everyone who responded to the community survey.

420 responses! Almost 50% of the Plantation!

As you would expect, there are positives and negatives, good comments and bad, happy members and not so happy members. I read with interest the data but was most interested in the comments. Many comments gave me much to think about, as I am sure every other Board Member would agree.

It’s great to hear from so many that we are appreciated. It’s difficult to hear from too many that we are not. I hear the frustration, and in some cases, even the anger. This is not an easy task, managing the affairs of Rose Hill. This and past Boards have done so much to improve our community.

There remains, and always will be work to be done.

Imagine that in receiving input from 420 members, some members take one position, and some members take the exact opposite position. In pleasing one group, we seem to ignore the other. Many comments reflected the desire for the membership to vote on every issue, or every contract. Think about how many vendors would be willing to provide proposals if they knew that every item in their proposal would be reviewed by up to 990 individuals. Consider how many vendors would submit proposals knowing that their proposal would be public and available to their competitors? Not many if any at all.

Think also of the logistics involved in holding a vote, tabulating the results and the time it takes to do this. Many proposals and contracts are time sensitive. Decisions need to be made in a timely fashion. Consider also what it takes for any vote to pass. Fifty one percent of the voting members must vote, and 51% of those voting must approve or pass the measure.

The reason you have a Board is to represent you and make decisions for the membership with the best interests of Rose Hill as the ultimate goal. Will we always get it right? No. Will we always please everyone? Of course not. We can only do the best we can at all times. Your Board does make the effort to communicate important decisions, and why the decisions were made. Think, Hargray contract. Your Board held a Special Town Hall with one agenda item- the Hargray contract. Yet, there are still many comments in the survey as to why Hargray is here, why Hargray and Spectrum were not allowed to compete against each other etc.

Every question or comment related to Hargray in the survey was addressed and communicated at this Special Town Hall.

The Board and POA Office Staff communicate with the membership through many avenues; Weekly and Quarterly Plantation Voice, eBlasts, Message Boards, website and phone to name a few. It is surprising, how often questions are raised at Board

Meetings, by phone, or the rumor mill, when the answers are readily available.

Bottom line is, your Board does care.

We do take into consideration as many factors as possible when making decisions and we do keep the best interests of Rose Hill in mind at all times. We won’t always get it right. Our Community Board Meetings are a perfect way to be involved. But sometimes, we are constantly charged with failure, receive very negative comments and sometimes what seems like personal attacks. Sometimes out of frustration we are less than cordial in our response. And I will admit I sometimes fall into that category. But I promise you, that if a question is asked with kindness and sincerity, the answer will reflect the same.

There are many issues for your Board to look into and consider. I promise, we will look very closely at where we can improve. Transparency and communication are two top issues. We will look for more and better ways to communicate and would welcome any ideas in this regard. At the same time, included in this issue is a list of the many avenues of communication we have right now.

Please, utilize these methods of communication, as we look for new ways to share what’s happening in Rose Hill.

Sunday, Oct. 27 Get your Polo Tickets at the POA Office for $20 Adult

CARING FOR THOSE WHO CARE FOR US Two local nonprofit charities, organized and operated 100% by volunteers, raise funds to support our local heroes injured or having perished in the line of duty. The Lowcountry Foundation for Wounded Military Heroes and the 200 Club of the Coastal Empire, serve similar missions‌helping care for those who care for us.

The Lowcountry Foundation for Wounded Military Heroes is a 501( c )3 nonprofit, right here in Bluffton, SC. In its 9th year, it has raised and donated over $1,000,000 to support combat wounded military heroes in the Lowcountry of South Carolina and Georgia. In partnership with Birdies for the Brave, the Foundation funds qualified charities that provide needed services to our combat wounded veterans and their families. Birdies for the Brave is a PGA Tour program founded by golfer Phil Mickelson and his wife Amy. For more information about the LFWMH and the charities it supports, please visit www.LFWMH.org.

The 200 Club of the Coastal Empire, is also a 501( c ) 3 nonprofit charity. Based in Savannah, GA, it serves the families of fallen First Responders in Beaufort, Jasper, and 18 neighboring counties. When we lose a First Responder in the line of duty, the 200 Club makes approximately a major financial commitment to the surviving families. In addition to an immediate response and financial support, the 200 Club also provides 100% of all college expenses for the surviving spouse and children left behind. Since its inception in October 2000, the 200 Club has contributed over $3,000,000 to the families of our fallen heroes. The family devastation that occurs when we lose a First Responder is tremendous and heart breaking. The 200 Club responds immediately, not only financially, but in other ways to help lessen the devastating effects. Learn more about the 200 Club at www.twohundredclub.org.

Both organizations rely on the generosity and support of residents, businesses, and organizations like you. People that realize the importance of these heroes and what they mean to our safety, welfare, and freedom. There are many ways to become involved and lend support. Each of the respective websites provide details on how to donate and support the charities.

These two amazing charities, have teamed up to plan, organize, and run, the Polo 4 Heroes event on October 27, 2019 at Rose Hill. Formerly run by the Rotary Club of Okatie/Bluffton, the 26th Polo event is now under the leadership of the LFWMH and the 200 Club. All proceeds will support our wounded military and the surviving families of fallen First Responders in our area.

Board Open Position Jeff Spencer resigned his position from the Rose Hill Board of Directors effective Monday, September 30, 2019. We wish Jeff the best of luck in his move and in his new home.

The POA will hold a special election to fill the remaining 18 months of Jeff’s term. Candidate interest forms are available from the POA office. Ballots will be mailed the week of October 7, 2019 and the election will take place prior to the town hall meeting on Saturday, November 9, 2019.

Pools The pools will remain open until late October as long as the temperatures remain warm.

Fall Flowers The fall flowers are scheduled to be installed at the north and south gates around October 17 weather permitting.

Equestrian Center The equestrian center is scheduled to have rotten wood replaced and to be painted beginning October 14, 2019 weather permitting.

Thank you to all of the volunteers for their work on the committees and many thanks to the POA staff for all they do throughout the plantation and in the POA office.

Last year you heard about an upcoming program to clean up and improve the shorescaping around our lagoons. Many have asked what happened to the program in the recent survey. The first step in this process is to do a Bathymetric Study of all lagoons to determine their functionality and determine if they need to be dredged. This study is planned for Q4 2019. Next, we are creating a new Common Grounds Committee that will be very involved in all things 'common grounds'. From lagoon shorescaping, to landscaping to Plantation beautification efforts. This new committee will kick off right after the first of the year and will officially be introduced as a new committee at the November Town Hall. The committee will be looking for volunteers. If you are interested, you can sign up at the Town Hall or at the POA Office.

We are pleased to announce that we have hired a new staff member who will be training to replace Crystal as the next Office Manager. Kristin Williams comes to us from Braesael Management in Matthews, North Carolina where she spent the past 8 years working as the Director of Operations.

Kristin enjoys spending her free time visiting the beach, spending time with her family and scrapbooking.

Kristin is adjusting to Rose Hill beautifully and we are very excited to have her. Once Kristin is fully trained Crystal Higginbotham will begin shadowing Jane Pritz as they work together on the transition. Kristin had the opportunity to meet many of you at the Critter Presentation on September 21 and enjoyed every minute of it. Next time you are visiting the POA Office, stop in and give Kristin a warm Rose Hill welcome!

Autumn has finally arrived and so has the heart of hurricane season. Security would like to thank everyone for their patience and understanding while the gates were closed when Hurricane Dorian arrived. We are very thankful that there was minimal damage and that our guards were able to get back to the gates as soon as the storm passed. We still are in the prime time for hurricanes, so please remember to be prepared and stay in tune with the weather forecasts.

Schools are back in session and with that, so is school traffic. Please remember that there are stopped school buses along with children walking to and from their bus stops while driving through the Plantation. Remember to obey our posted speed limits throughout the Plantation and come to a complete stop at all stop signs. Security has received an increased amount of reports of people not obeying stop signs. Our Security team monitors the intersections and will issue citations for traffic violations, so please make sure to obey the traffic regulations to keep everyone safe.

Security has also received complaints of residents allowing their dogs to run loose as well as defecate on other residents’ lawns and common areas without cleaning up after their pet. Pet owners must clean up after their dogs. If a resident observes someone not following this regulation, please contact Security and it will be handled accordingly.

October 27th will be the yearly Polo match and residents on the North side should be prepared for heavy traffic entering the Plantation from late morning until mid-afternoon.

Security will have extra officers working to expedite visitors entering the Plantation and law enforcement personnel will be on-site to assist as well. Please allow extra time for travel on this date and thank you for your patience.

Mark your calendars for the following events which will be sponsored by Caring Neighbors and taking place at Rose Hill: October 9 – Diesha Hicks from Lowcountry Area Agency on Aging, will be at Colleton Point at 9:00 AM. She will be giving a general overview of Medicare with a question & answer period following.

October 10 – Joel Lacopelli, Capstone Insurance, is an agent for United Healthcare and Blue Cross / Blue Shield. He will explain the Medicare Advantage and Supplemental programs for 2020 at Colleton Point at 9:00 in the morning. If there’s enough interest, he will also hold an afternoon meeting. Both of these sessions are limited to 20 people.

The Rosebuds and Ladies Golf Association are looking forward to enjoying cooler temperatures on our beautifully manicured course as Fall approaches.

The summer saw several of the ladies from both groups gathering on their assigned play days to sharpen their skills and to enjoy the camaraderie that golf provides.

Tournaments were enjoyed (with the MGA also in attendance) on Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and Labor Day. In addition, the Buds will be participating in 9-hole Exchanges in the next few months, and the LGA will be competing in the Coastal Carolina Ladies League.

Thursday Night, September 19 at Oak Terrace. The presentation was presented by Major Zeoli with the Beaufort Emergency Management Department.

Thank you to all those who made it out, we hope that you went away with a few new resources and some answers to your questions.

The Communications Committee also hosted a family friendly event on Saturday, September 21 at Colleton Point.

Joe Moffa with Critter Management came out to share his 4-legged friends with kids and adults of Rose Hill. Seeing the expressions on the children’s faces when they got the opportunity to hold an actual alligator was priceless.

There were about 75 people who came out and enjoyed this fun event with us.

We are looking to do a Part II with Joe Moffa where he will return with his slithery friends and other critters, too.

We will keep you all posted when the next event is scheduled. If you enjoyed this presentation you definitely won’t want to miss Part II. Thank you to all those who participated in this event!
