MARKET PLACE

A date for your diary!

Thursday, June 8th, Age Concern Lunch and Coach Trip to Ciutadella, Es Castell and Cala en Porter pick-ups. Contact Chris on 669 949 370

The shop is still very busy and very well stocked. Thank you for your donations and custom! And a big “Thank you” to all our volunteers, of course!

ARE YOU FEELING STRONG?

We are still in desperate need of more strong, able-bodied volunteers to help us collect large and heavy items. Even if you are only available one morning a month, or during only a few weeks every year, we’d love to hear from you. At present, we are having to refuse some donations or pay for collections as we do not have the capacity to collect, which obviously impacts on our income and spending power.

Also, thanks to your generosity, we have been able to donate items to help refugees from Ukraine as well as help our local community.

New Shop Manager Lee

Our biggest news is the appointment of a new Shop Manager, Lee, who joined last year after Carol retired from work. Lee’s family bought a holiday property on Menorca in 1986 and then moved here permanently in 1993. After completing University in the UK, he returned and worked in the family business for several years. He then moved to Mallorca, working as a branch manager for the Spanish version of Curry’s until personal circumstances changed, and he rejoined the family business in 2011. In 2014, he started working for a very well known property management company as Property Management Manager on the island.

In 2022, he was delighted to find out that his fiancé, Samantha, was pregnant with their first child. Thomas, or Tommy, as he is affectionately known, is now a beautiful baby boy. This great event made Lee rethink his work-life balance, and he joined Age Concern as our new Shop Manager. He feels he can both dedicate more time to his family life and also give something back to the island community he loves

Our Services

Our Lifeline service offers confidential help to those in need. A team of volunteers led by Carol (yes, she is still very much involved) is very busy supporting individuals in different ways. If anyone you know requires our help, please get in touch. If you would like to join our Lifeline team, please contact Carol. We always need translators.

The medical equipment short-term loan service is also still busy. Please make an appointment with Jan. This is essential if you need a wheelchair, crutches, walking frame etc.

There is no rental fee, but a deposit is required, and we do ask for a donation when the equipment is returned, and you get your deposit back. You can collect from us, or we can deliver anywhere on the island. Loans are for up to 3 months.

Lunches and Drop in Sessions

It has been wonderful to have our social activities up and running again. We hold a fish and chip lunch at Bar Pons, in Cala en Porter, on the first Thursday of every month. Our second monthly lunch, held on the third Thursday of every month, is in Ca´n Avelino 23 on June 15th. Sandy and Chris are the organisers, booking is essential and everyone is welcome! Both our weekly ‘drop-in’ sessions are up and running. Just come along and make new friends or meet current ones

• Every Monday from 11am -12.30 at the Jubilado Centre on the Esplanada in Es Castell

• Every Tuesday from 10am – 12.00 at Bar Pons, Cala en Porter.

The Tuesday ‘drop-in’ has been running for many years and is wellsupported. The Monday club is going from strength to strength thanks to Roy and Elaine

Keep your eyes open for more news, visit our website or Facebook page, email us for the latest information, or just ‘drop-in’ on a Monday or Tuesday.

Become a Friend of Age Concern

Our membership numbers are very healthy. Membership not only means you are supporting us, but also entitles you to discounts at all our social events. Please contact our Membership Secretary, Shelly, if you would like to support our work by donating €12 a year and becoming a Friend of Age Concern. You can pay at the shop, at our lunches or by bank transfer

Thank you all for your continued support through donations, purchases, membership or as a volunteer. We couldn’t do any of this without you!

THANK YOU AGAIN FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

WELCOME BACK ROQUETA!!!

Welcome back to our new season of the Arts Society Menorca!

Getting things started with our 2023 lecture series was Toby Faber of publishers Faber and Faber. His topic “90 Years of Excellence in Cover Design” was so interesting and informative, especially for us book lovers! On Thursday May 18 our second lecture was on “Conservation of Paintings” with Julia Korner. Julia studied art history and conservation at Cambridge, England and for twenty years worked for Christie’s as a painting specialist. So you may be reading this and asking “the Arts Society Menorca? What is that?” Simply, we are a branch of an international organisation promoting education of the arts. Committee Chairman, Victoria Dowie further explains, “There are nearly 400 member societies in the UK and abroad, 90,000 people worldwide. Our events provide a venue to hear and see experts live, sharing their specialist knowledge about differing aspects of the arts.” Lectures take place at the AeroClub San Lluís where there are Tapas and your favourite beverages available for purchase.”

It’s very simple to join the Arts Society Menorca: send an email to Malcolm at menorca@theartssociety.org and he’ll send you information and an application form. Malcolm Price, Membership Chairman explains, “Membership for 2023 is 60 Euros for individuals and 110 Euros for couples, and this includes admission to the 5 lectures plus 4 quarterly magazines from the Arts Society.” There is a fantastic programme of lectures this year, and details are shown in the events section on the website, www.theartssociety.org/menorca

You can follow The Arts Society Menorca on Facebook too! Malcolm adds, “It can be difficult to plan visits to the island that coincide with our lecture dates, so, you can join us any lecture night for just 15€; again, just email me and I’ll send you details”.

We are grateful to our friends at Blevins Franks for their support and sponsorship. The AeroClub San Lluís, The Anglican Church Menorca, and Ses Bruixes for their generosity. And to Jorge Fernández Alday for the use of his painting in our graphic design.

To a great new season!

Your Committee: Victoria Dowie, Malcolm Price, Carles Jiménez, Clive Dowie, and Kate Strudwick.
