LADIES LUNCHEON CLUB

Well quite a lot has happened since our last report in Roqueta. The club was unable to meet during lockdown obviously and Elaine Martin valiantly stayed on an extra year as president. Eventually, we got back to normal with our full complement which is often 60 people. The format remains the same, we move around in the summer and then have a permanent home in the winter. This is normally the Hotel Port Mahon but, as it is being revamped, we have been in the Hotel Agamenon and enjoyed its beautiful views.

We still have some interesting speakers. Lluis Ametller the official guide for Lazareto gave us a fascinating take on the history of the Port of Mahon. Joanna Young, from Estudio 3 in Mahon put together two fashion shows, with some interesting models to say the least (ahem) and Steve from Sa Botiga in Son Vilar has organised some good quizzes.

Our last lunch at Avelino 23 was themed to the coronation; many members turned up in red, white and blue, some with union jack trousers, some were crowned queens! We knew the quiz theme was Kings, but weren´t really expecting to remember that Roger Miller sang King of the Road... Deborah Hellyer revised her diplomatic past and gave the toast to the King and said a few words about him too. The Diari (local paper) also popped along. We had some excitement in the Agamenon when we coincided with the royal protection officers who were due to protect the Spanish king and queen when they visited the Isla del Rey and Ciutadella. What these fit young men and a few girls thought of the British ladies at large one doesn’t like to think...

Committee Changes

Elaine stepped down as president, Annie Gooch as vice president and Jane Thornely Higgs. They had all worked very hard, sometimes when they were recovering from surgery. Our new president is Jayne Wolstenhome who has seen the club in all its phases right from the beginning. Her trusty lieutenant is Avril Searles as vice president, Karen Pearson secretary, and Christine Brooker (Manota) Roqueta. New members took on roles including Julie Burchill, membership, Elizabeth Walker raffle, and Sam Roussel who helps everybody especially Karen and Julie on the door. Although the club is not a charitable institution, we do try to help whenever possible. Annie organised collections for the Ukrainians and the Red Cross and still does her wonderful Christmas Boxes. We run a raffle and the profit made means more help for charities and to subsidise events.

Next lunch is 7th June at The Grill by the airport. It is becoming difficult to find venues at the prices we normally pay as costs are rising but we do our best, until next month.
