If parents have any questions they should contact the school and the staff will be happy to help with personalised planning.

Our teachers are well prepared with a number of them leading programming groups in western Sydney and others working with colleagues across schools to make sure we have high quality teaching and learning programs in place. Students in Year 10 have selected their subjects and these include a range of traditional, vocational and external courses designed to create personalised pathways.

Year 6 to 7 Enrolment We are very excited to have welcomed over 200 new students for 2018 and their families to our very comprehensive enrolment interviews this term.

Ms Cawsey, Ms Mattimore and Mrs Quayle were available on Parent/ Teacher Night to explain Stage 6 to parents and they have already met with a number of parents.

We would like to thank the “new” parents and acknowledge how positive and enthusiastic they were about trusting their children to this highly innovative and creative school.

If you wish to ask any questions, please ring the school. NAPLAN Results – well done Rooty Hill Years 7 and 9 We were very pleased with the 2017 NAPLAN results and the growth in reading and numeracy from Year 7 – 9 was the best in some years. While just over 40% of students achieved Band 8 or better, the school is confident that each student continuing to Year 12 will achieve the HSC and be able to access the university, TAFE and employment pathways they plan with their families and teachers. We were also delighted that, when the school asked students in Years 7 and 9 to attempt NAPLAN online readiness testing they were enthusiastic and tried just as hard as they had for the pen and paper

We note a special congratulations to students from Rooty Hill Public School who completed their resumes and questionnaires before coming on the night.

As always we were able to reassure parents that their children would have opportunities here that many other schools cannot offer because of the school’s deep strategic partnerships with corporate, not for profit and university partners. We are always committed to giving each student the opportunity to do his or her best across a wide range of capabilities and programs. Mr Jackson, Ms Andrews and Ms Mattimore are all happy to answer any questions that new parents and incoming students have-please feel welcome to ring the school. Mitchell Institute Paradigm Shifters Program We would like to highlight one exceptional opportunity. For 12 months we have worked with 10

other schools from NSW and 10 for Victoria on a program designed to help students be more “entrepreneurial” as they prepare for life and study beyond school. In the research study students told their teachers to trust them; to recognise they are smart in many ways, just not academic ways; to let them surprise adults and show adults all that they can do; to remember that student-run projects should be run by students; to back them but not control them. This was wise advice from young adult learners to their teachers – and to their families. At the end of the project, billionaire Internet entrepreneur, Bevan Slattery and the Origin Foundation decided to recognise two schools in each state with an additional grant for a student run program. Students from all the schools were asked to vote and we were thrilled when our school was chosen as one of the two schools to receive the extra funding. Our thanks go to Kate Short, Dianne Hennessy and our 2016 Year 10 students for the YEP (Young Entrepreneurs Program). This year’s Year 10 students will be completing their program in Term 4 and we wish them well as they “pitch” for the additional funding. https://youtu.be/uhV8d4V8U5c Other events It has been another incredibly positive term with many events and activities for students including an inspiring book week focused on the 20th anniversary of the Harry Potter

You can read about them in the remainder of this ML. They happen because our students, their families, their teachers, our staff and the community in which we work are, for most of the time, happy, collaborative, hardworking and committed to doing their best. STEM @ Microsoft

Informal Assembly - Focus On Strengths and Future The Year 9 informal assembly had a focus this term on identifying and using individual strengths to create a better future for ourselves. Year 9 wrote letters to their future selves, which included what their goals are,

20 Year 9 and Year 8 students were invited to participate in a 1Scope workshop STEM @ Microsoft hosted by industry experts and technological innovators. Held at the Microsoft Store in Pitt St Mall students participate in two hands-on workshops. The first workshop was Hacking STEM: Seismographs and earthquakes. Students learnt how to build a Seismograph using everyday objects and explore modern engineering techniques used to mitigate earthquake damage. As well as how to use computer software to visualise data generated from their Seismographs Hacking STEM: Building machines that emulate humans. Students gained a hands-on experience building a sensor that controls a

mechanical finger that measures the flexion and extension of a finger to learn about the anatomy of a human hand. Online NAPLAN This year for the first time Years 9 and 7 students trialed online NAPLAN. Students took the test electronically. Online NAPLAN is a great way of testing students literacy and numeracy, and an even better way of testing their abilities on electronic devices as our world has become more consistent within the use of technology and dependent on it, as it is faster, easier and more accessible. Sustainable Houses in STEM Math and Science faculties joined forces to create a combined project based learning task focused on creating sustainable housing. In Science students built their sustainable houses out of a variety of materials, including cardboard boxes, paper, plastic and other resources that can be recycled. Math classes were used to create precise building dimensions to ensure successfully constructed housing. This also allowed students to find the area of houses, and therefore find the cost of building materials, a skill that would be needed in the world outside of school. Students displayed their final products Thursday of Week 9, showcasing their effort and hard work and innovative ideas. This task has been both fun and educational for students.

YEAR 10 Year Adviser Message As we close off another term, it shows just how busy this Year group actually is. With many, major events happening throughout Term 3, it is a credit to Year 10 for maintaining a high focus and commitment to their school work on top of school business. While subject selections has been exciting, confronting and confusing, it is Year 10’s next step into the Senior School and beyond. Students are now understanding the importance of subject selection, hard work, dedication and taking a consistent approach to school to be successful. A big congratulations to Year 10 on making it one step closer to define their successful futures. Well done! Mr Hay Year 10 Adviser

Year 10 articles written by Emma Ayre Fast Forward University Day During Term 3, the Year 10 Fast Forward students attended Western Sydney University as a part of a University day. They were lucky enough to be invited to look into potential careers for their post high school life and get a feel for the University environment. Working on their innovation, study and course seeking skills throughout the day, all students were grateful to be apart of the day and definitely didn't take the opportunity for granted!

BStreetSmart

This term, Year 10 students were invited to take part in the BStreetSmart Forum as part of their Road Safety course. The day included talks from real life ambulance/emergency service people, survivors of road trauma and were even lucky enough to witness a dramatisation of what may actually happen when road trauma occurs. As many students will be getting their L’s throughout this year, it was very important to know just how dangerous driving can be when

you’re not doing the right thing. Hearing the feedback from Year 10 students showed this forum was extremely beneficial. Geography Excursion Investigating Urban Growth

This term, Year 10 Geography students participated in an excursion around Barangaroo & The Rocks, to investigate the changing city of Sydney. They were on the lookout for where they could possibly apply the geographical terms that they had learned in class. All Year 10 students that attended the day benefitted greatly when it came to properly understanding each geographical term, something they needed to help them with their term 3 topic test. Well done to the students who conducted themselves and represented Rooty Hill in a positive way. VALID Exam Year 10 completed their online VALID Science exam this term.

solving and skills based assessment task this term. Students were very excited and showed enthusiasm towards the activities that were part of the assessment.

Food Technology Year 10 Food Technology students did an amazing task on cake decoration this term.

Subject Selection As the year is slowly coming to an end, Year 10 students had to start thinking about what subjects they will be taking in Years 11 and 12, if they will be receiving an ATAR and what careers they are thinking of pursuing once their high school journey comes to an end. Although some students are still unsure of what they would like to do once they leave school, receiving the information on each subject available at RHHS, was extremely beneficial. Good luck to all Year 10 students in their subject selections and remember to choose subjects you’re passionate about! Students On Track Excursion

Maja Zlomislic also made the U16’s School Sport Australia All Australian Team, an outstanding achievement.

Senior Leaders 2018

Senior Leadership nominations started at the end of Term 2 and the process continued this term. Students had to undergo a rigorous training day and several stages of interviews and presentations to ensure their nomination. In Week 3, nominees then presented to a group of their peers, including Years 10, 11 and the SRC. These presentations were outstanding and showed a wide range of personalities and skills present in the nominees. Once completed, Years 10, 11, the SRC and teachers voted for the positions of School Captain, Principal’s Rep, Sports Captain, SRC Chair and Senior Leaders. A huge congratulation to the elected students, and all the effort they put in to the process.

Year Adviser Message What a way to end Year 11. This term Year 11 has managed new obstacles and challenges in the process of completing their preliminary HSC year. This term some students were also given the opportunity to run for a Senior Leadership position, students received their Year 12 jackets and they completed their Preliminary exams.

Legal Studies students visited the NSW Supreme Court in the heart of the city. Having passed through the security guards and enormous metal detectors, students were greeted with a representative of the court who provided the history, jurisdiction and various roles within the Supreme Court. Students then explored the different levels of the new and old courthouses, observing hearings ranging from a bail appeal to a criminal trial for murder.

The long anticipated Year 12 jackets also arrived this term. This year we went with a different approach, and decided to work with a local entrepreneur to design a new look jacket for our Year 11 cohort. The jackets are a bomber look jacket, with a lining to keep our hands warm during the cold and windy winters. It’s safe to say they were a huge hit and worth the wait. Preliminary Exams In Weeks 8 and 9, Year 11 completed their Preliminary Examinations. This is the first time these students have sat an exam in similar to the HSC exams. Students were well prepared, a little stressed, but made it through with positivity and smiles as always. Starting Year 12 In Term 4, this cohort will start Year 12 and their HSC course. It is important for students to remember that all assessment tasks, class work and attendance will now directly impact their HSC. Students will take this in their stride and work to the best of their ability, as they always do.
