About RoomRaccoon

FOREWORD Dear hotelier, As we approach the off-season after an extended “peak” season, it’s a unique time to reflect, regroup, and prepare for the next wave of visitors. The good news is travel is very much back and has taken on a new rhythm. From what we’ve gathered, it seems like many of us are leaning towards frequent, shorter trips and focusing on domestic destinations. Yet, it’s important to highlight a 37% increase in bookings made by international travellers since last year. But here’s the twist – we’ve discovered that more and more people are opting for longer stays at aparthotels, Airbnbs, and hotels equipped with workspaces. It’s like a blend of work and play, and it’s pretty fascinating how this trend is evolving in 2023. As we’re all aware, the COVID-19 pandemic significantly affected the travel industry. However, there’s a positive outcome: direct bookings are maintaining momentum and holding their ground against OTA bookings. It’s exciting to see this trend.

As predicted, inflation emerged as a prominent theme in 2023. Our data dive reveals that European hoteliers made up for higher operating costs with a 10% increase in Average Daily Rate (ADR). They also achieved an impressive 20% growth in Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR) for 2023. These numbers can be attributed to both the robust demand for travel and the effective utilisation of intelligent hotel pricing tools, such as RoomRaccoon’s hotel CompSet dashboard and the yield manager. In this report, we’ll uncover the trends and opportunities that are shaping the future of the hospitality industry to help you fine-tune your offerings, create memorable experiences, and ensure your guests have a truly exceptional stay. But hey, we can’t talk about the future of hospitality without giving a nod to the technology that empowers hoteliers, can we? So, stick around till the end, as we’ll wrap up with a feature release recap and a sneak peek into RoomRaccoon’s Product Roadmap for 2024!

HOW HOTELS CAN WIN Occupancy is one of the best ways to measure your hotel’s success. But it takes more than listing your property on a few more booking channels to boost occupancy. Here are our top tips to increase occupancy and decrease distribution costs: • By keeping a close eye on your competitors’ rates and utilising Rate Shopper tools like RaccoonRev, you can gain the competitive edge necessary to secure more bookings and achieve greater success on OTAs like Booking.com. • With an HMS like RoomRaccoon, you can cater to demand accurately by implementing automated yield rules that optimise your rates according to room-sell probability. • Upsell room upgrades to free up your less expensive rooms, increasing occupancy and boosting revenue. • Set-up your booking engine to drive conversions with a direct booking discount, enticing add-ons and packages. It’s essential to take note of occupancy rates to inform new strategic decisions for your hotel’s performance plan. Start by learning more on how to increase your occupancy rate! 7

THE ROOMRACCOON SCOOP

Length of Stay The average length of stay has had a significant shift in the past year. The length of stay has decreased to 2 days, but not to fear – it indicates a change in travel, not a dip in travel. With an average length of stay beginning at 1.74 nights and peaking at 2.38, we see guests seeking a brilliant yet brief experience. As occupancy rose 11% from 2022, this trend reveals more about traveller behaviour. With this data, we can see that travellers are visiting more places with shorter stays. This could be a product of wanderlust or practicality. Hotel guests are craving convenience.

HOW HOTELS CAN WIN Are you wondering how you can persuade guests to extend their stay in 2024? In that case, it might be a good idea to provide co-working spaces to cater to the growing trend of ‘bleisure’ travel. By offering additional amenities that make working and traveling as effortless as possible, you can motivate both new and returning guests to prolong their stay. You can also encourage past guests to return with special offers. A few features that enhance the guest experience, encourage longer stays, and promote return visits at your hotel include:

2 days average length of stay in 2023

• Negotiated rates: collaborate with bookers and travel agents to secure repeat bookings for longer stays at reduced rates. • Long-stay discount packages: promote special packages with minimum stays. • Pre & post-stay emails: create and maintain a strong guest relationship with personalised communications such as a ‘returning guest booking confirmation email.’ • Stored guest preferences: previous guests’ personal information will autofill to help expedite the booking process. • Online Check-in & Check-out: allow guests to skip the queue and check in at their convenience with online check-in and check-out. 9

Domestic & International Travel International travel has seen a resurgence in 2023, but domestic travel remains the favourite. Our data shows that 39% of bookings in 2023 were made by international travellers, up from 37% in 2022. However, overall bookings made by domestic travellers are still ruling the roost, with an average of 43% in 2023. Domestic bookings have decreased by 3% since 2022, while total reservations have skyrocketed.

Total bookings yearly average increased from 104,740 to 149,615 – that’s a significant 44,875 jump! With European countries reporting record-breaking tourism statistics, it’s no surprise total bookings have increased.

HOW HOTELS CAN WIN In terms of domestic and international travel trends, there’s one way to help your hotel stand out. With visibility and bookability. You can maximise your hotel’s visibility with a dynamic channel manager that connects you to local and global sales channels. You’ll be able to reach thousands of new guests all over the world. What is bookability? It boils down to two questions, is your hotel appealing online, and can a reservation be made easily? The easiest way to improve your hotel’s online appeal is to invest in a website builder. In this way, you can create an intriguing website that’s easy to use. This brings us to our next point – you need to have an integrated booking engine on your website. Bonus points if your booking engine has multi-language capabilities making it easier for all prospective guests to book direct.

Unsurprisingly, OTAs are the most popular integration category of the year, followed closely by point-of-sale (POS) solutions and compliance integrations for countries such as Germany, Spain, Italy and Portugal. The accounting integration is a great way to streamline the invoice settlement process, and hoteliers are integrating with solutions offered by Flexipass, RemoteLock, Assa Abloy, and Guestkey by Hotek for hassle-free guest access. Booking.com stands out as the dominant force in the European booking channel market, serving as a primary source of visibility and revenue for the majority of hotels. RoomRaccoon’s two-way connection to the OTA giant allows for additional API connections, which in turn provides a range of benefits to users. Key benefits include the ability to manage content and respond to reviews directly within the RoomRaccoon platform, making it easier to stay on top of your property listing and guest feedback. In the niche booking channel market, HostelWorld is popular in Spain and Portugal, where hostel businesses are thriving. In the Netherlands, Voordeeluitjes is a popular local channel used to bolster bookings. 13

Spotlight:

GOOGLE HOTELS Google Hotels played a significant role in hotel bookings in 2023, and it’s not hard to understand why. It offers a cost-effective pay-per-stay model that helps hotels shift bookings from OTAs to generate more direct bookings. With more visibility of your direct rates, you can pay lower commissions, upsell guests immediately, and take control of your hotel’s cash flow. It’s important to note that bookings from Google Hotels come with a significantly reduced commission rate than most OTAs, making it a financially wise choice for your hotel in the long run. A bit more…

Google Hotels is your #1 Metasearch Channel Google Hotels is the ultimate hotel marketplace - where all OTAs and hotels can advertise rooms and availability. It’s often the first place vacation-hungry guests look for their accommodation: through a Google search. A Google Hotels listing puts your hotel front of mind (and at the top of the search results) for travellers seeking their next stay.

Get more bookings for less Google Hotels operates like an Online Travel Agent. There will always be a commission for bookings made through this service. However, the commission you will be charged from Google Hotels will be less than OTAs like Booking. com, which can charge 15% commission or more! Even better? Costs on commission are only calculated for confirmed bookings, meaning it’s pay-per-stay (not pay-per-click.) The pay-per-stay model reduces the risk of your hotel’s advertising budget being spent on click-happy travellers on the hunt. HOW HOTELS CAN WIN

Maximising Space The trend of earning extra revenue by utilising additional space is becoming more popular. RoomRaccoon’s unique Grey Rooms feature allows hoteliers to sell spaces beyond traditional rooms.

Parking Conference Room

Modern travellers are no longer satisfied with just a room night. Take the quintessential ‘bleisure’ guest as an example, seeking long-stay packages with a workspace complete with good Wi-Fi and unique experiences. This presents a key opportunity for hotels to maximise profitability with offerings that go beyond rooms. A key metric gaining significance in this context is TrevPAR (total revenue per available room). To boost TrevPAR and stay competitive, hotels should diversify their revenue streams.

Wedding Reception Room Upgrades By upgrading, guests create more availability for budgetfriendly rooms, allowing for increased occupancy. Through RaccoonUpsell, hoteliers successfully upsold selected room categories.

Get inspired and explore the top add-ons that hoteliers are offering to their guests. Choosing to upsell your guests is a smart, cost-effective move compared to relying solely on new business. And hoteliers often overlook the potential benefits of offering room upgrades, such as freeing up cheaper rooms and increasing occupancy rates.

Italy recorded the second-highest ADR at €148 with an 8% increase, equivalent to €11. THE ROOMRACCOON SCOOP Hotels rely heavily on Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR) as a key performance metric, considering occupancy and ADR. In 2023, RevPAR showed an impressive increase of 20%, or €11, reaching an average of €66, indicating that the strong travel demand and improved room pricing strategies were key factors for hotel success despite higher room rates. The data reflects a spike in RevPAR over the European summer season, peaking at €98 in August.

It’s worth highlighting the significant surge in RevPAR for Italy and Portugal during the summer season. Germany had the lowest RevPAR among the surveyed countries, with an average increase of €9 or 21%, bringing it to €51.

Despite the economic challenges, our desire to travel has remained strong, resulting in consistently high occupancy rates across the EU. However, travellers are now prioritising value for money when choosing accommodation, leading to more price-conscious bookings. To meet expectations, hotels should base their rate decisions on intelligent and real-time data rather than guesswork. Learn more about hotel pricing tools

Direct & OTA Bookings Hotels experienced an uplift in bookings. The question is: did guests primarily use Online Travel Agencies (OTAs), or did they book directly with the hotel?

With a nearly equal 50-50% split, hotels are not putting all their eggs in one basket but instead spreading the love between direct bookings and using OTAs, casting the net far and wide while remaining primed to welcome direct bookers seeking that extra touch.

In 2023, we observed a 5% decline in direct bookings, while bookings through OTAs saw a 5% uptick. The reassuring takeaway is that, among our independent hoteliers, direct booking methods are holding their own against OTA giants.

Direct Booking

HOW HOTELS CAN WIN In the epic duel of bookings, OTAs are like trusty sidekicks for hotels, but direct bookings remain supreme, not only for the cost-effectiveness but also for delivering a seamlessly connected guest experience! Hotels can maintain direct booking momentum in 2024 by partnering with Google Ads that shift visibility to your direct rates, allowing you to compete head-on with OTAs, pay fewer commissions and win more direct business. One way to increase the likelihood of guests following through with their booking is to simplify the booking process. If potential guests come across your hotel website but find booking to be complicated or untrustworthy, improvements should be made. For this reason, it’s essential to prioritise an easy and secure booking and payment process with a leading and reliable booking engine engineered with features that increase your direct booking conversion rate such as: • • • • •

Visible discount code OTA vs direct price comparison widget Secure online payment processing Bookable add-ons for a custom stay Dynamic pricing functionality

For younger travellers, peer reviews and property content significantly impact their decision-making. 27

HOW HOTELS CAN WIN Travellers are the most winnable consumers in the world right now. Hotels must seize the opportunity to entice potential guests already researching and planning their trips for 2024. Here’s how to win more early bookings:

7

• Promote early-bird rates and seasonal packages on your website and social media channels as much as possible so that travellers are aware of it and can book in advance. • Create visually appealing content that highlights the benefits of booking in advance, such as cost savings or exclusive perks. Make sure this information is easily accessible to potential travellers. • Implement flexible cancellation policies that give guests the confidence to book early. • Encourage past guests with exclusive, limited-time deals and promotional codes. • Incorporate dynamic pricing to optimise revenue based on demand and other factors.

KEY TAKEAWAYS Occupancy

Domestic & International Travel

There was an extended “peak” season as high occupancy rates continued through September and October, leading to a notably high average rate of 54%. Hoteliers can prepare by setting up dynamic pricing to manage the influx of bookings.

Travel surged in the past year with total reservations rising by 44,875. To delight all guests and boost bookings, local and global, invest in a multi-language booking engine. This creates a personalised and convenient guest journey for all.

Length of Stay

Integrations

With length of stay declining, guest experience is more important than ever. By prioritising guest experience, you can increase return guests who travel more frequently, resulting in more reservations and revenue.

Booking.com stands out as the dominant force in the European booking channel market. Google Hotels played a significant role in hotel bookings in 2023, offering a cost-effective pay-per-stay model that helps hotels shift bookings from OTAs to generate more direct bookings.

Upselling & Cross-Selling

ADR

Hoteliers are exploring ways to diversify their revenue streams by offering innovative add-ons. They are partnering with businesses to provide guests with options such as photoshoots and tours. They also utilise additional space for bookable meeting rooms, and parking spaces. As far as add-ons go, get creative and reflect on your best-sellers.

As summer reached its peak, the months of July and August saw a significant surge in ADR. In August, the UK, in particular, witnessed an impressive escalation in ADR, which soared to a fantastic €181.

RevPAR

Direct & OTA Bookings

Hoteliers are bringing home the bacon, RevPAR has risen by 20% in 2023 - or €11 - to an average of €66. To ensure your RevPAR is being maximised, use a revenue management tool with competitor monitoring to ensure you have the best rate.

In 2023 our data reflects an impressive 51% direct booking rate, that’s more than half of bookings with no commission paid to OTAs. The most effective way to boost direct bookings is by utilizing a PMS that includes a robust booking engine to drive website conversions.

Booking Lead Time With an average booking lead time of 25 days in 2023, guests are back to planning ahead. Try to win early bookings from guests with flexible booking T&Cs, seasonal discounts and limited-time deals.

Child Policy Functionalities for Enhanced Booking Management

You will also be able to create scheduled policies to accommodate seasonal changes in surcharges and city taxes. With the introduction of child policy, guests can book seamlessly through an improved booking engine with a brand new search criteria, accounting for adults and children.

UPCOMING FEATURE

Moving towards Accrual-Based Accounting Methodology

We’re working towards integrating accrual-based accounting as an addition into the RoomRaccoon system. By integrating accrual based accounting methods, you can precisely account for revenue on the day it is generated, rather than the day it is invoiced. In 2023, we enhanced the management of add-ons in the system, enabling you to assign add-ons to specific days and rooms. Early next year, you will be able to close-off revenue for a specific day, up to a specific date. This guarantees that the financial data for the reservation is up to date and is set in stone, preventing any additional revenue from being added or past revenue figures from being altered. This approach enhances the clarity of daily financial reporting, a crucial aspect for hoteliers in understanding revenue distribution over multiple days.

“As part of an ongoing project, our product team is actively overhauling the user interface (UI) and user experience (UX) to elevate the overall interaction for users. At the same time, we are meticulously rearchitecting the underlying codebase to deliver the world’s best all-in-one hotel management system.” Tymen Van Dyl, RoomRaccoon CEO & Founder
