ISSUE 5 / JUL - SEPT

MORE THAN 100 YEARS AGO …my life was impacted!

My great-grandfather made the best decision of his life – I think it was round about 1911. After a revival in Europe, John G. Lake was sent to South Africa as a missionary and it was at one of his meetings that he surrendered his life to God. Ever since then he has left a legacy. Not only to his own immediate family, but also five generations later people are in full time ministry because of one man’s choice.

I’ve met so many men in my life that have made such a big difference in other people’s lives. Every Friday at 5:55 we listen to another authentic story. I wish I could introduce you to all these history-makers, but here are only a few:

Mr. A was in charge of a large company with more than 500 people who reported to him. Because of poor management he had to step down; left only with five people in his care. According to the majority he could fight back to be reinstated, but instead he listened to the soft voice, “it is not how many people that are IN your service, but how many you are OF service that makes the difference…” Mr. B

left work early one afternoon to discover that his wife was cheating on him with his best friend. Although it took some time to work through the emotional cycle of change, he came to a point where he decided to forgive. Forgiveness is not an emotional act, it is a choice of our will! Today, a couple of years later, Mr. B and his wife are impacting other marriages that experience difficulties.

Mr. F had to be a father to his own narcissistic father. He consistently showered him with sacrificial love which led to a life-commitment to God. Reconciliation took place shortly before his father died.

Mr. H was trapped in a cave of depression. At 3:00 one morning he made a call to a friend. That one call saved him from suicide.

Mr. J failed the audition to be part of the school choir. The un-accomplished feeling of ‘I am not good enough’ haunted him for years after that. But God’s mind was set on much more than some teacher’s pronouncement; his first job was to be a worship leader! God’s validation is of far more value than what people say. Mr. N

was pulled into the sea by a current wave and almost drowned. Although he was saved miraculously, he struggled afterwards with why he never considered to call out to God in the darkest moment of his life. His hope was focused on circumstances for deliverance. Simultaneously in his career he was also drowning. He called unto God for help and discovered new strategies that gave permanent solutions to a bad situation.

Mr. T

got the news that his teenage daughter fell pregnant. Instead of choosing an abortion they welcomed the new born baby. A prouder grandfather can’t be found!

Mr. W lost his eight year old son. Devastation drove him to a solitary life of despair. Someone invited him to be part of a group where they fast became friends – a band of brothers. Transparency was the door that widened his horizon realising that he is part of a body. Life is not to be lived in isolation. I wish I could introduce you to all the men on my list

Mr. I

never considered adoption as a solution to infertility. Today, two well-balanced teenagers have the luxury of calling him their dad. I shudder to think what could have happened to them as orphans if he didn’t step up to the challenge that crossed his path.

that influence my life. I wonder how grateful these men would be if they could see the difference in generations to come…

All About Ants

COMMUNITY NEWS

ARTICLE by PROFESSOR ANDRE BUYS

Ants (family Formicidae) are truly remarkable animals that have some very unique capabilities. Ants have the ability to lift and carry objects many times their own weight. Ants are social insects that live in large communities of up to 500 000 ants. Their communities are headed by one or more queens, whose only function in life is to lay thousands of eggs. Workers are sterile females that build the nest, forage for food, feed the queens, care for the young and defend the community. During a specific time of the year young winged males and queens will fly from the nest to mate. After mating, the male dies and the female seeks a proper nesting site and begins a new colony. Ants also have the ability to migrate and start new colonies if the main colony is under stress.

Brown house ant / Pheidole megacephala

Ants perform many useful functions in nature, such as dispersing seeds, collecting dead insects, and protecting certain plants from herbivores. However, they can also be pests. Three of the main pest species are the brown house ant (Pheidole megacephala), the black or garden ant (Lasius niger) and the pharaoh’s ant (Monomorium pharaonis). A brown house ant colony has many queens and can reach an enormous size. They often nest under paving where they dig up small mounds of soil. When found in buildings they occupy ceilings, wall cavities, power outlets and nearly any suitable space. They have two types of workers, small (2 mm) minors and larger (3 to 4 mm) majors or soldier ants.

A black garden ant colony has a single queen and has about 5 000 individuals. A queen can live up to 12 years. Black ants nest outdoors in walls and under paving, but they forage widely for food and water and commonly enter domestic premises. Black garden ants can cause damage to paving and destroy plants and grass growth. Pharaoh’s ants pose the biggest risk to health as they often feed in unhygienic areas such as refuse bins, drains and sewers. They require warm humid conditions and are therefore often confined to buildings. Ants are attracted to homes and buildings due to the presence of water and food sources and are very common in kitchens and bathrooms. The first line of defence is making your home unattractive to ants. Keep the house clean, keep food in air tight containers and take out the garbage regularly.

It is difficult to eradicate ant infestations in a house once they have established themselves. Insecticides will kill the visible ants, but will not eradicate the colony as the foragers are only a small percentage of the ants in the nest. The best solution is the use of granular or gel ant baits. They contain slow-acting poisons that the foraging ant workers take back to the nest and feed to the young and the queens. This baits works slowly and it could take a few weeks before the colony dies. If that fails, you might have to call in a pest control professional.

ESSENTIAL HOME SECURITY Safety Tips for Estate Residents Sometimes suffering from a false sense of security, many estate residents neglect essential security procedures in protecting their families and properties. Mike Bolhuis shares valuable insight on how to minimise security risks and increase home safety.

The estate fence is just for general security and with many homes not having any additional security, criminals find estate homes to be easy targets. Residents should know that criminals gain intel from inside sources using methods ranging from bribes to extortion and threats. The employee’s families are threatened and then they subsequently choose to give

communities.

Take note of these great tips for maximum safety!

Keep Everyone Safe

Don’t leave equipment like ladders and spades lying around.

Palisade fences or normal wire fences connected to beams or alarm systems are superior to walls because sight of the surroundings is important.

Install warning signs to act as a deterrent.

Regularly clean the alarm code or push button pads to eliminate the risk of burglars being able to get your code through the use of powder which reveals the fingerprints on the buttons.

Regularly replace batteries in alarm systems and test the systems for proper operation.

Keep costume jewellery and items of low value in a safe with the truly valuable items stored in one or two other hidden safes.

AWARENESS

Before departing on a holiday trip apply these preventative security steps:

Pack the vehicle just before departure. Never let it stand fully packed overnight.

Test the indoor and outdoor alarm system for proper operation.

Check the indoor and outdoor lights for operation including the day and night switches.

Inspect the electric fencing where relevant.

Arrange with a trustworthy person to regularly visit the house to give the impression that you are still at home.

Ask the person to remove post from the post box as heaped piles of post will be indicative of an unoccupied home.

Arrange for proper daily care of animals and plants.

Notify the community patrol or security company (if you trust them) of the expected return date and arrange for regular patrols.

Ensure that all emergency numbers are available.

Hide all remotes, keys and valuable items.

Remove the batteries from parked vehicles or deflate the tyres.

Redirect the home number to your cellphone or a third party because criminals will immediately detect that you’re not home if the house phoneis not answered.

Lock all doors and windows, as well as the bedroom and hallway doors.

Load Shedding and Vigilance Criminals have knowledge of load shedding schedules.

Final Warnings •

Have a trusted locksmith replace all the locks in the house when you purchase a new home because criminals can make copies of your keys.

Become a member of the community patrol or security group even if you are living in an estate.

Concerned residents can contact Mike Bolhuis for advice and security assistance.

Learn to get up and move forward. Focus on other opportunities that come your way.

“Make it work, never give up and believe in yourself while you keep on praying that God will provide…. Mistakes are inevitable, but you need to resolve the problems as soon as possible. How you handle the mistakes will determine your success.” The lab entailed exceptionally long hours of work, upon which he decided to go into business with his dad Sydney Gibbon, owner of the Menlyn AutoMagic franchise. Charl explains his decision to migrate from the medical to the automotive industry “I wanted a normal 8 to 5 job and did it for the future of my family. I am a perfectionist, a creative and artistic person and enjoy working with my hands. I exchanged the art of dental work for vehicles, but the end-result is still what matters. I treat my client’s vehicles as my own and still commit to perfectionism to ensure a desirable result.” Being an entrepreneur means having to make sacrifices and for Charl making the move from dental technology to the automotive industry was a sacrifice. He clarifies “I had to adapt because people think I am crazy for leaving the dental technology industry as it has prestige. Besides, the long hours and sacrifices associated with dental technology work also comes with the sacrificing of family time”.

The family enjoys the outdoor life, especially vacations to the Kruger National Park and camping in the wild. Indeed, Charl’s bucket list includes participating in a Kruger wildlife hike and one day going on a Kruger safari with his family to explore the entire game reserve. They love mountain biking and try to compete in the Sondela Mountain Bike races with the young ones participating in their own class. Cycling is not about competition for Charl, but as he says :

Michelle confirms that he lives the ideal since he prefers to spend time with his daughters, wife and sometimes a few close friends. Socialising for him is to have a braai with a couple of friends at his home. He often starts a little fire on Wednesday evenings and then invites her to experience the tranquility of just relaxing next to the fire.

“It is an opportunity to spend time with my family enjoying nature and keeping fit. It is just for fun. We’re normally six or so friends and families together, camping and cycling… I would like to do the Argus one day…”

He fits the profile of an entrepreneur and elaborates “I am a dreamer, thinking of new opportunities, ideas and innovations.”

On to the topic of business ownership Charl explains that he chose the franchise concept because of the ongoing

success.” Roodelife | / Issue 5

For aspiring entrepreneurs he has the following message

“You must be hard working and give it everything. You have to dream big and believe while staying humble and thus never forget where you came from and that everything is from God….You need good problem solving skills, must be determined to succeed and require a lot of patience.”

Michelle helps him to keep a balance. She is the realist who brings in the checklist to keep him grounded. Charl is about ideas and innovation. In his words “If you are in business you must be able to make a plan to solve any type of problem.” He sums up being an entrepreneur as “eventful”. According to him each day brings its own challenges and there isn’t time to be bored. A typical day for the soft-spoken, but firm business owner starts with an early morning gym session and then, when possible, dropping the kids off at school. Thereafter it is time for business. Daily tasks range from quality control to marketing management, solving customer problems and meetings. He tries to minimize the need for meetings, but he doesn’t procrastinate if there are pressing problems to discuss. Solving problems is part of a normal work day. He works around 9 to 11 hours a day during the week and until 1pm on Saturdays. The rest of the weekends are normally reserved for his family. Saturdays are the hardest for Michelle as a week becomes long and she longs to spend family time with him. He loves being a business owner because of the challenges involved, the ability to grow the business, to see the endresults of hard work and the flexibility that goes with being his own boss. He explains his motto for long term success “Do everything good.” Customer service has its rewards for Charl and according to him “Satisfaction comes from giving the client what he asked and more than what has been expected….You build a successful customer base by walking the extra mile.” He describes his ideals as “I want to be a success and have happiness: to be a good business owner, husband and father. I am a family man.” Finally a message from Charl to all the men out there:

“A happy wife means a happy life. Make time for your family. Enjoy every moment with your kids as they grow up so fast.”

Tuscan Style

in the Heart of Dinokeng ARTICLE by Isebell GauchĂŠ

Roodelife | / Issue 5

INSPIRATIONAL LIVING

Mangabey Nr 5, located in the prestigious country estate of Sable Hills Waterfront Estate in Roodeplaat, boasts a distinctly country Tuscan style architecture. Built in 2012 by CG Construction under leadership of Coenraad Groenewald and designed by Marius Uys for Jaco & Michelle Kruger, it is a home specially made for full enjoyment by the entire family. Featuring an undisturbed waterfront and view of the natural surroundings, the family home offers a tranquil setting for pure relaxation and stylish simplicity. Originally designed for optimal waterfront access and usage, the home features its own jetty which is perfect for the teenage sons who regularly Jet Ski and take to the fishing spot where they spend many a night attempting to reel in a big one. With minimum west-facing windows, the house, sunny and light, stays cool during the warmer summer months. Sliding doors connect the indoor and outdoor areas. A chandelier made from driftwood forms the centerpiece of the double volume entrance hall with a buffalo mould as evidence of Jaco’s Mozambican hunting safari. The velvet paint gives a rough texture which complements the overall décor.

The house has three spacious en-suite bedrooms and a study area. The study with its small library is Michelle’s place

of

work

where

she

does

admin, bookkeeping and game farm administration. It has a small bathroom with a shower and cupboards for easy conversion to a guest room. Staying in character - the bathrooms have distinct earthy interiors with three of the bathrooms featuring outdoor stonewall and brass plumbing showers. The house lends itself to a lodge and safari feel with the interior bathrooms featuring cemcrete coated walls.

A home designed for family life... The teenage boys Jaco and CornÊ have their own entertainment room with a separate access door, offering the privacy they need to visit with friends. The family utilizes the large open-plan entertainment area indoors and outdoors to the fullest with the spacious veranda being a trendy spot for quick-gettogether visits as gatherings with friends who are also resident in the estate often occur at the spur of the moment. The veranda has a lovely built-in barbeque to keep with the South African tradition of braai’s over weekends and a large round table for casual dining. The outdoor boma next to the dam is well-suited for the warmer summer night socials and the sparkling pool is a popular area for informal day gatherings.

Jaco, being the best cook in the house, and loving every moment of it maximizes the benefits of the built-in gasbraai and rotisserie for the preparation of mouthwatering delicious Sunday lunches. The kitchen has earthly colored ceaser-stone counter tops with the back splash finished with cladding covered in glass with the glass-effect further enhanced through strategically placed down lights.

20

Roodelife | / Issue 5

The walk-in pantry is Michelle’s favorite part of the kitchen. With most of the foods stored in the pantry the kitchen design could be focused on drawers rather than cupboards. The pendants made from cardboard were imported from the Netherlands. The home features an exceptionally large and absolutely beautiful natural wild garden that fits in well with the natural setting of Sable Hills Waterfront Estate. With many varieties of succulent plants, it is possible for Michelle to keep the garden in immaculate condition even during the dry winter months.

“Our home is special because this is where we relax and just be. We love our home so much we rarely go on holiday. Our best holidays are staying at home to enjoy our special piece of nature where we have a 180 degree view of Roodeplaat Dam and waterfront area to ourselves.

FINANCE & WEAlTH

How do I become WEALTHY?

S

urfing the internet can be worse than losing one’s way in a labyrinth ... you may stumble upon weird and wonderful things ... or fall prey to a nightmare or two. Just Google the word ‘wealth’ and anything - from a wealth creation hub to a stokvel and dozens of “get rich quick schemes” - immediately pops up. Some of the questions which are raised with regards to wealth creation are: Are some people destined to be wealthy? Is it pure luck? Does being rich run in your genes? or Is becoming rich slowly but surely travelling a long and hard way to the top? But the most prominent question is: How do I become wealthy? On a self improvement blog, Dr. John Demartini, a world renowned human behavioural specialist, bestselling author, international speaker and expert in leadership development, writes that “nature ultimately recycles the wealth through time to give everyone the opportunity to master the art of wealth building, which is truly a set of values game and a state of mind”. Fin24 also quotes Dr Demartini: “Each individual must make the decision of where they want to play in the game of life – socio-economically at the top, the middle or bottom. The former and the latter are actually complementary opposites to maintain a dynamic equilibrium – the laws of nature.” No wonder Dr Demartini calls luck preparation meeting opportunity. After spending decades on interviewing millionaires around the world to find out what the secret of their success was, Steve Siebold, author of How Rich People Think, came to the conclusion that becoming a millionaire had little do to with money itself, but much more with their mentality. In T. Harv Eker’s Secret of the Millionaire Mind he claims that we each possess a financial blueprint, an internal script that dictates how we relate to money. Our blueprints are created through lifelong exposure to money messages from the people around us. Eker lists 17 ways in which the financial blueprints of the rich differ from those of the poor and the middle-class. They include:

» Rich people believe: “I create my life.” Poor people believe: “Life happens to me”. » Rich people are committed to being rich - poor people want to be rich .

24

Roodelife | / Issue 5

» Rich people focus on opportunities - Poor people focus on obstacles. » Rich people associate with positive, successful people Poor people associate with negative or unsuccessful people. » Rich people are willing to promote themselves and their value - Poor people think negatively about selling and promotion. » Rich people have their money work hard for them - Poor people work hard for their money. » Rich people constantly learn and grow while poor people think they already know enough. » Unfortunately, Eker says, most of us have faulty blueprints that prevent us from building wealth. In a similar book, The Top 10 Distinctions Between Millionaires and the Middle Class, Keith Cameron Smith names ten differences between the mindsets of the rich and the rest of us. They include:

» Millionaires think long-term - middle class thinks short term. » Millionaires embrace change - the middle class is threatened by change. » Millionaires work for profits - the middle class works for wages. » Millionaires believe they must be generous - the middle class believes it can’t afford to give. » Millionaires have multiple sources of income - the middle class has only one or two. » Millionaires ask themselves empowering questions while the middle-class people ask themselves disempowering questions. Conclusion: How to become rich and stay rich may seem a mystery; but it needn’t be. “We have a choice on where and when we want to place ourselves in this magnificent financial game,” as Demartini says. And this is where Optimum Financial Group comes into the picture. With the help of Optimum’s team of experts you have the opportunity to decide where you want to play in the game of wealth. THE HYPE AROUND

CARBOHYDRATES What are Carbohydrates? Carbohydrates are one of the main types of nutrients that our bodies need to function. They are the most important source of energy for our bodies. In the digestive system carbohydrates are changed into blood sugar or as otherwise known, glucose. The body uses this sugar for energy for cells, tissues and organs. Not all of the carbohydrates we eat are digested and a small part passes through the digestive tract unchanged. This is called resistant starch.

Resistant Starch Resistant starch has been a prominent topic in various health magazines and talk shows and a lot of research has been done on the powerful health benefits of this type of starch. These benefits include improved insulin sensitivity, several digestive track advantages, sustained energy levels, and reduced appetite because of the satiety characteristic.

Sources of Resistant Starch According to Kris Gunnars, CEO and founder of Authority Nutrition, the classification of resistant starch is not that simple, but four types are mainly found: Type 1 is found in grains, seeds and legumes and resists digestion because it is bound within the fibrous cell walls. Type 2 is found in some starchy foods, including raw potatoes and green (unripe) bananas. Type 3 is formed when certain starchy foods, including potatoes, rice and pasta are cooked until al dente and then cooled. The cooling turns some of the digestible starches into resistant starches by a process called retrogradation. Type 4 is man-made and formed via a chemical process.

Pilates for Golfers

ARTICLE by Brenda van der Merwe

Golf is a left-handed sport, played mostly by right-handed people. Your left side (the part closest to the ball) is known as the target side. Perfect balance between mobility and stability is of the outmost importance. The most common injuries in golf are in the lower back, elbows, hands, wrists and shoulders Pilates exercises can help with rotation in the lower back, strengthening the core, feet alignment and transference of weight. Pro golfers believe in stretching and flexibility exercises. Today, these forms of exercises are progressing to

and rectus abdominus. When performing a golf swing, different muscles are activated when you are going into the backswing and following through into the downswing. The backswing is performed using mostly shoulder rotation, the lower back and the gluteus minimus. When moving into the downswing, the impact is mostly from the shoulders into the arms and hands, eventually transferring the energy from the golf club to the ball. In my line of work, I find that men often don’t focus their training on their hips and glutes. Ladies train these areas for

Typical exercises will include side to side walks with a resistant band tied around the ankles and the Glute Bridge. These exercises can be done safely in the comfort of your own home. athlete. She is also a personal fitness trainer at Wellness World in Montana Park where she trains mostly women to live healthy and fit lifestyles. She is also a competition consultant for athletes competing in Bikini, Figure and Physique divisions and a national judge for IFBB South Africa. It is her passion to help others to achieve their goals and to give back to others what she has learned in the sport. It was a long road to reach her goal. From childhood her father inspired her to do sport. It was only once she had completed school that she started weight training. While working as a personal trainer the owner of the gym where she worked told her that she has the potential to compete as a figure athlete. In her first year of competing she placed 7th in her first competition, but went on to win in the world championships in France the same year. She was hooked after that. She has been competing for 10 years, has been the IFBB South African Figure champion three times, and the overall champion twice. In 2014 she competed at the Ferringo Legacy Pro show in Santa Barbara, USA where she placed 5th out of a line-up of 23. This was a first for an IFBB South Africa Pro woman athlete. It’s a great accomplishment as it’s extremely difficult to compete abroad. Marlene trains all year round but she increases her focus and diet 16 to 18 weeks before her show date. Her training consists of 45 minutes per day weight training and 40 minutes cardio training for six days a week. She also does field work. To keep her training fun, she includes kettle bells, bodyweight exercises and a lot of compound exercises. She also keeps her diet simple.

ADVENTURE GUIDE:

DIAMOND-X COWBOY RANCH Real American saddle horses, imported American saddles, spurs and chaps, and breakfast prepared on the ground in the canyons… that’s the Western Adventure you are in for at Diamond X Cowboy Ranch. So don your cowboy boots and stetson and ride out to discover the John Wayne within you. An American-style cowboy ranch near Cullinan? Really? Yes Ma’am! This is where saddle horses, Jesse James hulls (saddles), and real jackaroos (cowboys) await to give visitors a Wild West adventure they will never forget. Diamond X Ranch is situated in the Dinokeng district. It offers outrides on a Texas-style cattle ranch, with well trained horses. The cowboys are internationally trained and experienced. The ranch is the perfect place to take part in traditional Western activities such as cattle drives, branding and tagging. Your visit will transport you into an era long passed, where horse-riding and the cattle round-up were a way of life. When you go through the farm gates it will be like transcending into a Wild West movie set. There are American saddle horses everywhere. The outbuildings all have cowboy names and the fences are painted white. Tepee tents near the chalets complete the picture and the saloon-style main building is the cherry on the corn-dodger (cake). Most city slickers come here for the “fine as cream gravy ranch programme”. This is a cowboy course, including practical

sessions, which covers topics such as groundwork and roping, outriding, working problem horses, grooming, cutting, roping and branding. Cowboy games such as horse shoe tossing, roping and barrel racing are all part of the fun. Horse shoe tossing is a favourite cowboy game. Something like juksei, it entails throwing a horse shoe on to a pole.

There are also various clinics that cover basic horsemanship, the novice rider, reining, lunging and more. The Cowboy Experience is a four-day clinic for “tough cowboys”. Pony camps for children are arranged for varying periods of up to seven days, and according to testimonials on the ranch’s website, can have great benefits. For those pressed for time, there is a cowboy “quick fix”. Visitors can take part in a cattle drive on a Sunday morning, which caters for skilled or novice riders. This lasts for up to four hours and includes a “City Slicker’s Breakfast”, prepared on a heap of coals in the kloof/canyon on the farm. Family weekend retreats are popular, as are children’s parties... not to mention the adult parties and team building programmes that take place at Diamond X. Accommodation is available in the Bunkhouse, which can sleep five people in two rooms, the Ranch House, which sleeps 15, or the three chalets that can take two people each. You can also opt for the authentic experience of staying in a tepee tent. Meals are available on request.

READY TO SADDLE UP?

Most of the riding activities start with an exercise called “joining up” – with a horse, that is. This is an effective method of winning the horse’s trust. There are three signs to look for when “joining up” --- the horse’s inside ear being locked onto you, the horse dropping its head, licking its lips or chewing the air. When the horse completes these signs, you can be sure that you have won its

respect. After joining up, the horse and its rider then work together for the remainder of the course or weekend. One of the interesting cowboy activities is “noosing the steer”. Outside the main saloon, visitors are taught how to rope a cow or horse. A wooden horse and a grass bale with a plastic cow head attached to it are the victims being noosed. Early evenings guests can sit on the veranda of the main saloon and watch the cowboys do barrel racing, or marvel at a show of Spanish horse “dancing”. Line dancing is often part of the evening entertainment, and the partying goes on till late in the big sawdust-filled barn. Getting up early and doing a cattle drive with barrel fever (a hangover) might prove more challenging than any of the activities the day before!

It’s not okay to be

oVerWEIGHT “ Overweight people have a condition that is unacceptable in our society,” said Dr. Kelly Brownell, an obesity researcher at Yale University School of Medicine.

Judging by the daily news and gossip columns, it is hard to think that there is anything that is still socially unacceptable. Since 1980 obesity has more than doubled worldwide with a staggering 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, being overweight. Worse even is the fact that 42 million children under the age of five are overweight. Overweight per definition by the World Health Organisation means a body mass index (kg/m2) of more than 25. Although obesity is preventable, many find it extremely difficult to avoid. People become overweight when they expend less energy than they consume. As our daily tasks are being simplified by an ever increasing number of helpful appliances and devices, the food industry is producing increasingly more energy-dense foods that are high in sugar and fat. So, while ESKOM is struggling to supply enough electrical energy for the ever-growing demand, our foods are being stuffed with surplus energy even though our bodies are demanding less and less energy. There are many studies that link being overweight to medical conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, osteoarthritis and cancers of the breast and colon. The emotional and psycho-social impact of being overweight should, however, not be overlooked. It is often heard that fat people are happy people, but in my experience over the years, I have found most overweight people to be miserable and often depressed. The sad thing is that they don’t always admit that they feel miserable, not even to themselves. This, in turn is usually worsened by the fact that they find comfort for their misery in eating even more. A vicious circle develops that is hard to break out from, without proper help. The positive side is that obesity can be cured, although it takes commitment, hard work and support. The results are always most rewarding. Success lies in lifestyle changes, challenging your thoughts around food and supportive guidance and trained advice. Dr. Kelly Brownell also said that, unlike the blind or the deaf, fat people are told that they could be thin if they really wanted to.

Get off that couch and get some help.

He states that this can be emotionally very harsh for a person who is already overweight and has tried diet after diet without success. It is important to always remember that obesity has many causes, although the fundamental principle remains the same. If the energy input is more than the energy output, weight will start to increase. In conclusion, to lose weight is not easy and seldom successful if attempted without a proper plan and support. Being overweight, however, remains a serious health risk and should be unacceptable for anyone who wants to enjoy a healthy life. Every effort should be made to try and lose excessive weight and there is never a better day than today.

At the start of 2015, ZA Wireless Africa questioned its place in the wonderful world of wireless Internet...

The threat of the giants in the Internet market crushing the small providers increased the uncertainty, but then our place in the market became quite clear and transformed us into the driven company that we are today.

It is immensely frustrating for the customer when a larger provider experiences downtime and leaves the customer in the dark with no way to solve the problem.

With us the customer immediately knows what the problem is and what the solution will be. We strive to answer each client’s inquiries and provide a specialised Internet service. This means that at ZA Wireless Africa we provide you with a network at your home or business to meet your needs and budget. The “Uncapped” option is available to clients who want quantity and not necessarily quality. Our staff profile consists of a network specialist, a skilled technician, and an additional helper for installations to meet the demands of a growing market. The team is supported by a general manager who works mainly with the clients to ensure a manageable work schedule. New clients are up and running within 48 hours. The community is still our priority. Schools, churches and the GPF get a portion of their Internet service for free. Operating in the larger Roodeplaat and Sinoville area and going the extra mile to help and provide excellent service, ZA Wireless Africa is your only reliable provider in the Internet environment.

That’s our slogan and the reason we are still a popular option for customers who want to know what, where and when.

DERDEPARK CENTRE ROAD UPgRADEs AlMOsT COMPlETE ARTICLE by DANITA NORTJE

Road upgrades to benefit the community and improve traffic flow will add value to the region. Residents in the Dinokeng region are frustrated with the inconvenience caused by the ongoing road upgrades at the Cullinan Road, but they’ll be glad to know that good progress has been made and upgrades are expected to be completed later this year. The new road is necessary for the development of the region’s road infrastructure. Gautrans normally pays for road infrastructure development, but it is not always a given. Piet van der Watt is the owner of the property being developed and has partnered with two other private developers to complete the developments. Piet van der Watt of Derdepark Centre, Dirk Smit and Willie Marais entered into a joint venture to develop the road from the current inactive robots at the corner of Kameeldrift Road to the Derdepark Centre T-junction. The upgrades will see the entrance moving 100 metres east which will improve traffic flow and convenience for the Centre’s users. Heavy vehicles will no longer use the main entrance as the diesel pumps will be relocated next to the main building. The cost of the new developments is estimated at R16 million. Willie Marais is in the process of applying for the necessary approval to erect a private hospital at the Kameeldrift Road crossing. The planned hospital will be managed by a reputable company and provide top-class medical facilities. In addition to residential and office parks, storage facilities will also be developed. These developments will contribute to the growth of the business hub over the next two years and will add value to the region in terms of convenience, property value and aesthetic appeal. Motorists will have the privilege of using a well-developed two-directional road featuring double lanes on both sides. A traffic light will be installed at the Derdepark Centre entrance which will include the necessary slip-ways for easier and safer access.

40

Roodelife | / Issue 5

The residents of Mountain Drive will make use of a servitude road that passes the Centre and the Hunting Association where they can then turn left. The current old and neglected road has already been closed. An additional road will also be developed at the Derdepark Centre crossing to connect with the Kameeldrift Road and will help to alleviate the expected traffic from Cullinan and from Kameeldrift. The traffic lights are currently out of order because of a financial issue related to the Zambesi Mall, which will also hopefully be resolved when the traffic lights at Derdepark Centre become operational. Piet believes the current bottleneck will be resolved when all the traffic lights are operational. The completion period for the road was estimated at six months in April 2015. Residents have to deal with the inconvenience for only a little while longer. The Derdepark Centre will also be upgraded over the next few months. Piet wishes to express gratitude for the community’s patience regarding the upgrading of the road and Centre. Road users will soon benefit from the upgrades through better traffic flow, safer road conditions and improved access to the shopping area. Readers who need more information can contact Piet van der Watt directly at 082 458 9322 or email info@vanderwatts.com.

MIGHTY MEN ConferenCe 2015 - Karoo

Everybody knows Angus Buchan and his Mighty Men Conferences. The last conference was held in 2010 in Greytown on the farm, Shalom. It was the 7th conference and about 250,000 men attended. The key message for the conference was that men need to stand up and take their place as the King, Priest and Prophet of their families. Angus’ dream was that the MMC would branch out to other regional areas as well. This is exactly what happened! Shortly after the 2010 conference at Shalom, the men from the Karoo decided that they are going to hold the first conference in Middelburg in the Karoo in 2011. Soon more conferences in other areas followed and Angus was regularly invited as a guest speaker and motivator. This is how Angus became a world renowned evangelist. On the weekend of the 24th of April it was time for the 5th MMC to be held in the Karoo. As a group of bikers we used the occasion to get a few men together. Soon there were 20 men ready to leave Pretoria on their iron horses to attend the conference. We decided to make a long weekend of it and took a detour through Bethulie and spent the night at Norvalsport. We drove over the longest bridge in SA, the Caledonand-Orange river bridge, and also visited the Boer War concentration camp and cemetery in Buthulie. The conference was all about lives changed by God’s power and not just a mass camping experience for men. Louis Els, Afrika Mhlope and Angus ministered to us on Sunday morning. The messages were from the heart and inspired by the Holy Spirit.

There were about 40 000 men and more than a 1000 received Jesus Christ as their saviour. The definite highlight was seeing how the men praised and worshipped our Creator. Fathers and sons made peace and relationships were restored as the tears streamed down the faces of big, strong men. If I look back at the MMC Karoo it is difficult to put into words what an incredible weekend it was. Lives were transformed, a major shift occurred in the heavenly realm and lives will reverberate with the consequences of life changing into eternity. Thousands were inspired and empowered to do extra-ordinary things for God and their families. The difficult part, however, is to implement the wonderful gift that God initiated in our daily lives. This can only be achieved by continuous prayer, faith and support from fellow brothers.

As Angus always says,

‘Good people don’t go to heaven, believers go to heaven’. It is time that men remove their masks and show who they really are; it is time they become fathers to their children and stand up as the king, priest and prophet of their homes. ARTICLE BY Chris Jooste

SHORT STORY

I can’t wait... ”Aaaah! A monster! It’s going to eat me!” Oh, hi! I’m Phebe and I’m running away from Big Ben. My story starts with an argument . . . My mom, my sister Christi and I want to go to Paris but my dad and my brothers, Frederik and Marnu, want to go to India for our summer holiday.

“India is the best! It’s a fork-free paradise. It’s definitely the best place to go!” said Dad. “Dad is right!” said Marnu. “No! Paris is the best! It’s the city of LOVE! We must go there,” Mom replied. “Yes! Mom is right!” said Christi just as the phone rings. It was Grandpa on the line. “Hello, Phebe! How are you?” Grandpa is a tall man with friendly blue eyes and always tells funny stories. “I’m well thanks and you, Grandpa? I answered happily. “Really? No way! Thanks Grandpa, see you soon. Bye!” I said, ringing off. “Hey guys, what about England?” I proposed. Everybody disagreed with the idea until I said the magic line: “Grandpa bought us tickets!” That changed their minds. We had a busy weekend preparing for our trip but eventually it was time to get on the plane. The seats were comfortable, the engine was humming softly and I settled down for the long flight to the home of Big Ben! England is beautiful and I love the British accent, I thought to myself. When we arrived at Grandpa’s house in Water Street he smiled and gave us a big hug. “Welcome to England!” he said cheerfully. “I still want to go to India and although England is nice, the rain is driving me crazy! Please can we go to India rather,” Fredrik complained. That night Grandpa told us one of his famous stories. “Once upon a time there was a villain named Skulton. He had a magical blue powder that could turn anything into a monster. He turned Lady Liberty in New York into an evil monster and she destroyed many buildings and houses.

42

Roodelife | / Issue 5

Skelton commanded people to follow him and if they didn’t he would destroy them and everything they loved. One day the magical blue powder accidently fell out of Skulton’s hands and he suddenly disappeared. Poof! When people realised that Skulton was nowhere to be found they rejoiced in the streets and life returned to normal. They didn’t know what had happened to him, or if he would ever return…” When Grandpa finished telling his story, I turned my head to look out the window and that’s when I saw it! “Grandpa, what does Skulton look like?” I said with a frightened voice. “He has a blue skull. Why?” said Grandpa. “Because Skulton is here and he’s turned Big Ben into a monster!” I screamed. Everybody started running as fast as they could looking for a place to hide. We were all terrified! We knew we had to think of a brilliant plan to outsmart Skulton and the Big Ben monster! But then I heard my mom’s voice saying, “Wake up, Phebe. We are landing.” I was safe in the comfortable seat on the aeroplane. I was so relieved that it was only a dream. England is beautiful and Big Ben isn’t scary at all. I can’t wait for us to go to Paris on our next holiday!
