W

e’ve reached the halfway mark of 2016 and this is RoodeLife’s second-last issue of the year. My how time flies! This also means that winter is upon us and, while most people don’t like winter, there is some beauty to this time of year, as we get to see how summer turns into winter – from lush greens to the beautiful warm hues of yellow, orange and red. So ask yourself this: How long has it been since you’ve appreciated the beauty and magnificence surrounding you? With the focus being on Women’s Month, I want to challenge every woman – be yourself! Live your dreams. Love your body. Be able to say “no”, and mean it. Most importantly, believe in yourself. Don’t miss out on the inspiring message from Liesel Krause-Wiid in this issue. A word of appreciation to Kevin Richardson, better known as the “Lion Whisperer” who, amidst his busy schedule of film production, management of his wildlife sanctuary and his family time, shared about his life and work with our readers who enjoy gaining insight into the lives of inspiring people. The short stories submitted by the Grade 9 students of Curro Roodeplaat High School provided for delightful reading, but I’d like to congratulate

Yolandi Beer as the winner for this issue. Yolandi, it was a delight to read your short story! Lastly, I have been touched by San-Marie Rossouw, a mother from Bothaville, who tragically lost both her daughters to cancer and the appreciation she showed towards the students of Curro Roodeplaat High School for the blood that they donated which helped her daughters to experience life just a little bit longer. Community members – I would like to request that you become part of the annual Blood Donation Day and in so doing, make a difference in someone’s life. May you all live in peace and love each other, and may every woman know and experience how special she is. Regards,

Danita

Make A

Difference S “

Hello, my name is Annemé Rossouw and I am 20 years old. I have Fanconi anaemia or put in plain terms – bone marrow failure syndrome. One out of every 750 000 children in the world is diagnosed with this condition. My sister and I both suffer from it. I want to thank each one of you for being willing to donate blood – it makes a difference to the lives of so many people like me.

When we found out that my sister had leukaemia, she was only given two to six weeks to live after the diagnosis, but thanks to all the blood donations, my sister’s life was prolonged with eleven months. Thank you for every bag of life that you give. Words are never enough to thank you for it, but please know that the people in whose lives it makes a difference are forever grateful for you.

Seun and San-Marie Rossouw share: “As a family, we experienced a devastating time with two sick children who needed blood on a weekly basis, we realised how dependent we are on people that are willing to make time and donate a little ‘bag of life’. I will never be able to say thank you enough to each person who contributed to my children’s lives.

DONATE BLOOD – YOU WILL CHANGE THE RECEIVER’S LIFE. JUST LIKE A SMILE, IT WON’T COST YOU ANYTHING!

omewhere and sometime in your life you have most probably lost a dear friend or family member to death. It’s a tremendously emotional period and it takes time for your heart to recover from the tragedy. However, with prayer and support, you can make it through the difficult time. I’d like to share this inspiring true story with you about a mother who lost both her children to cancer. San-Marie Rossouw recently thanked the pupils of Curro High School for their contribution. Annemé Rossouw wrote a letter to Curro High School as a token of her appreciation for the community’s contribution through blood donation. Here is a short translated quote from the letter:

Annemé and Hesmé aren’t with us anymore to say thank you on their own, but their lives were bettered thanks to people caring and those who were willing to help without even knowing us. I would like to thank everyone that is donating blood, who offer up time and who are making a point of donating on a regular basis. Thank you to the schools and organisations that get involved and organise blood donating days.”

In loving memory of Annemé Rossouw (04/04/1995 – 26/04/2015) & Hesmé Rossouw (02/12/1997 – 22/07/2014).

The Leeuwfontein

CARTRIDGE GIRLS

In the previous issue (Issue 8) of RoodeLife, the history of Paul Kruger’s explosives factory at Leeuwfontein was presented. As this issue has a focus on the ladies of our area, this article deals with the Italian girls that worked at the factory.

T

he extrusion of dynamite into cartridges was dangerous work, and women were found to be more careful and patient than men. As a result, they were employed as cartridge girls. Working with nitro-glycerine gave the girls a lovely and fair skin, but caused severe headaches. However, after long-term exposure, they developed a tolerance to and dependence on nitroglycerine. The first group of cartridge girls arrived at Leeuwfontein in 1890. Some were very young, like Angela and Giuseppina Audagnotti, aged 15 and 17 years old respectively. Their trip to South Africa was not easy. They only spoke Italian and therefore had to wear boards around their necks on which all of their personal details were written. They travelled by train to Le Havre, where they crossed the English Channel to Southampton from where they embarked by ship to Cape Town. The next stage was by train to Kimberley and

8

finally by horse-drawn coach to Pretoria. The men at Leeuwfontein eagerly awaited the arrival of the girls. There were soon many courtships. In November 1890, Maddalena Castagno married Henri Bullier, the French manager of the factory, in the Catholic Cathedral in Pretoria. Agostino Mara courted Marianna Tonda, but she was reluctant to marry him because he was a widower who already had two children. Then Giuseppe Carbonatto arrived at Leeuwfontein. One of the girls remarked “Che bel fil!” (What a handsome young man!). Marianna and Carbonatto eloped and were married in Machadodorp in August 1893 by the landdrost, after which they went to Durban where their first son was born. Back at Leeuwfontein, Agostino Mara had married Giuseppa Portigliatti in June 1894, so the Carbonattos returned to Leeuwfontein and had their second child in September 1895.

Marriages were regular events at Leeuwfontein: Modesto Gallo married Teresa Carnino and Vincenzo Trosello married Maria Vinassa, both on 8 October 1892. Angela Audagnotti married Emilio Tommasone in December 1893. In March 1894, Father van Laar, the Catholic priest in Pretoria, travelled to Leeuwfontein to baptise all the children that had been born to workers from Avigliana. The contribution of the women of Avigliana represents a colourful chapter in the building of the first major manufacturing industry in South Africa and many of their descendants are proud South Africans today. Without the help of these ladies, South Africa may very well have been a lot different and the services these ladies provided will forever impact the lives of South Africans – whether they know it or not.

Animal Abuse

I

n a perfect world, all animals would have their freedom, but in reality, we love keeping animals. Such pleasure, however, should never be at the expense of the animal’s comfort and wellbeing. We should provide them with food, shelter, water, care, medical treatment, the necessary space and as close as possible to the ideal circumstances to ensure their comfort and wellbeing.

TRANSPORTING AND KEEPING INDIGENOUS ANIMALS If you want to purchase or transport any wild or tamed indigenous animals or birds other than domestic or farm animals, you need to notify the relevant wildlife conservation authorities and you must apply for the necessary permits. These authorities

will do the required inspections of the shelter needs, feeding habits and premises, transportation and animals. medical treatment. FORMS OF ANIMAL

CRUELTY • Insufficient food and undrinkable water. • Animals left unattended. • Animals chained up for prolonged periods. • General abuse – beating, teasing or kicking animals.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? Drive more carefully to prevent accidental killing of animals crossing the road (like house pets, owls, snakes, eagles, mongooses, leguaans, etc.). Teach your children to respect animals – don’t allow them to tease and torment animals, or to shoot at birds or animals with slingshots or air rifles. Rather than killing snakes found near your home, you can call us at Specialised Security Services to have them removed and established in a conservation area at no cost to you. We work closely with Dr Chris Kingsley in this matter. Report animal abuse, illegal trading and negligence to nature conservation authorities, the SAPS and NSPCA, or call us immediately for assistance. We operate in partnership with various organisations and handle such cases on a pro bono basis. Our team has had to deal with many instances where animal removal has been necessary, including the confiscation of 49 exotic monkeys at a prominent nursery in Pretoria where the animals were grossly neglected.

• Lack of shelter/exposure. • Inadequate space. • Not euthanising an animal when necessary.

DON’T SHOP.

• Random capture of small animals, birds, insects, frogs and reptiles and keeping them as pets in cages.

Adopt A HOMELESS ANIMAL

• The discharge of firearms or fireworks near animals. NEVER use fireworks! • The lion petting industry and canned lion hunting. • Private zoos where animals are bred and kept in small enclosures. • Excessive breeding of animals, as well as backyard breeding, like puppy mills. • When a person keeps more animals than can be managed responsibly. • Use of poison on rodents, causing suffering and secondary animal deaths. • The use of traps and snares to capture animals.

ADVICE Only catch an animal if it needs medical treatment. Rather relocate than kill spiders, scorpions and snakes – do not keep them in cages. Burn your garbage at a safe designated garbage dump and remove any hazardous materials (plastic and all other non-biodegradable garbage) which can be a serious threat to animals and nature. Recycle your waste and keep the Roodeplaat area clean! Visit the RoodeLife Facebook page for videos, photos and more information on the topic. www.facebook.com/roode.life

FREEDOM GOLF DAY

at Pebble Rock The Pebble Rock Golf Course and Clubhouse has recently been bought by the Homeowners Associations of Pebble Rock Golf & Bushveld Estate. To celebrate the acquisition, a major fun day was held on the 27th of April 2016.

A

ptly named the Freedom Golf Day, the celebrations kicked off with an early shotgun start for the full field of golfers, whom were treated on the course by various sponsors providing free snacks, drinks and handouts. The Clubhouse was already buzzing with activity by the time the golfers returned their scorecards, as they were awaited by family, fellow homeowners and residents of the neighbouring estates and the greater community. To cater for the young ones, numerous activities were provided. To determine their highlight of the day would be impossible, as they rotated between the 26 metre long waterslide, the rocket launcher, the mechanical bull and various other apparatus with seemingly inexhaustible energy. To determine the highlight for the adults is easy. The six lambs that were perfectly prepared on the spitbraai with accompaniments definitely stole the show. New friendships were forged

12

and old ones rekindled over good food and many drinks. Live music was provided by Arno, a young and upcoming artist. Later in the evening, however, the microphone was occupied by residents living their dreams of becoming singers themselves…very much to the amusement of the crowd. All in attendance were in agreement that this was definitely the greatest residents’ event ever held at the Pebble Rock Clubhouse, and it was promptly decided that the Freedom Golf Day will be a yearly institution. It will, without doubt, go from strength to strength. With the new ownership of the facilities came new management, and numerous improvements and additional services are envisaged. Improvements to the Course will be done in conjunction with various experts. As from May, the restaurant at the Clubhouse has been operational, and although it at first offered a limited menu, it will be expanded in future. Special dinner evenings are also in the planning,

and the First Friday Club is already an institution. The bar area has been revamped and will receive its own identity. A competition is underway to find a suitable name for the Pebble Rock Pub, where “happy hours” and cocktails for the ladies will soon be introduced. Private functions, presentations, and birthday parties can be hosted, with major improvements to this offering also underway. Access to the Clubhouse is open to the public and is not reserved for residents or golfers only. The Pebble Rock Restaurant & Pub will soon be a popular venue for residents of our greater community to enjoy a relaxing afternoon or evening. Visit www.pebblerock.co.za

Lion

Whisperer

& Family Man K E V I N R I C HA R D S O N

We get a rare glimpse into the life of film producer and conservationist Kevin Richardson at his animal sanctuary situated on 1 250 hectares within the larger Dinokeng Game Reserve.

R

enowned for his groundbreaking conservation films and special relationship with lions, Kevin has played an integral role in improving the general understanding of the magnificent Kings of the Jungle. He has spoken out against canned lion hunting and lion petting practices extensively over the years, and the sanctuary’s volunteer programme helps to financially support it. Volunteers participate because they want to see the resident animals in real life and to learn more about working with the animals.

14

BUT, HOW DOES HIS WORK AFFECT HIS PERSONAL LIFE? Kevin prefers not to expose his family to the public life, especially his children who, according to him, don’t really have a say yet. He met his wife Mandy at an outdoor sports bar and she has ever since been an important part of his life.

Mandy deals with the administrative and finance related management of the sanctuary and according to Kevin, “she’s one busy woman”. When it comes to family life and work, Richardson explains that over the years, he has learnt that balance is needed.

Author: Isebell Gauché | Photos courtesy: Jeroen Hofman & Shireen Alberts

Too much of anything can be bad. Therefore, I do take time out to spend with my family. The hardest thing to do is to learn when not to be accessible to demanding people who can be inconsiderate of your personal space and time… So, trying to fit social media and all the other electronic requests into a normal work day is challenging. When we are waking up, Australia is in full swing, so emails and phone calls are flying backwards and forwards. When we are finishing the day, the USA is just waking up and that can eat into evening family time, if you allow it to. It really has helped me to consider and respect people’s private time and lives before just picking up the phone. I make a point of not contacting people before 08h30 or after 17h30, unless it’s an emergency or I’ve been asked to do so.” Family time at this stage doesn’t involve a lot of interaction with the lions because his children are still young and although they enjoy going to the farm to see the wildlife, the family also enjoys spending time at home or meeting up with friends who have kids of a similar age, which keeps them rather busy. He doesn’t put pressure on his children to become involved in wildlife and explains it as: “Whatever they show a passion for, I will support. I think it’s important not to push your own ideals and interests on your kids, however, if they show the initiative, then nurture it.”

HIS UNUSUAL INTERESTS AND PASSIONS ALSO EXTEND TO HIS HOBBIES “Honestly, these days it’s when I get the time. I enjoy riding my vintage motorcycle and when I get the odd weekend with nothing else on, riding supermotard on the track. I like to keep my pilots license current, as I know there’ll come a day when I will fly a lot again. In the past, I used to use it to commute to Botswana and sometimes Zambia. I once flew a small two-seater plane all the way up to Kilimanjaro. It was an adventure to say the least. I also enjoy the mechanical side of things and therefore enjoy tinkering on the old bike.” He doesn’t allow his children to interact with lions and animals at the sanctuary because the animals are mostly mature and it would be dangerous as they don’t know or have a relationship with the kids. Kevin elaborates on the danger: “They would most certainly be mauled and/or killed. The animals are all contracepted at the sanctuary to prevent breeding and thus severing the potential for my lions to land up in the ‘canned’ lion hunting industry, whereby lions that are bred in captivity are sold off to be ‘hunted’ or executed (as I like to put it) in these so-called ‘canned’ or captive bred hunts.”

WHAT ABOUT WHEN THE FAMILY GOES ON HOLIDAYS?

Just as your dog doesn’t hold it against you when you go away, neither do the lions. In fact, they have an incredible power of remembering special bonds. The critical issue is being there in the formative years of their lives… It would take a long time for the relationship to disappear. It can and does happen (like with any relationship) where even the animals you work with on a daily basis can have a breakdown in trust with you.”

HOW IT STARTED “My love for animals stemmed from a very early age and it never left me. Most people who know me well knew that I’d have something to do with animals when I was older, however, I don’t think anyone would’ve guessed lions and other predators. I met Tau and Napoleon (the first two lions I ever worked with) when I was 22/23 years old, and I think they played a major role in shaping who I am today. Being accepted amongst lions and hyenas as one of their own is an extremely humbling experience and tends to give you a different outlook on life, helping you focus on what’s really important in this world. Things like family, friends and relationships, which are sometimes taken for granted, are put into a new perspective when I spend time around the animals.

It really did all begin with me meeting two 6-month old lion cubs who became known as Tau and Napoleon back in 1998/99. Initially, I just used to visit them daily and later was offered part-time work, which soon became a full-time job. I felt that it was a natural fit and that I could grow in this environment. I developed many relationships over the years and now look after these animals at the sanctuary in Dinokeng.”

16

DANGEROUS WORK Regardless of his daily interactions with lions, Kevin has only been attacked once back in 2000 by a male lion with which he didn’t have a relationship. His description of what happened is a grim reminder of the dangerous nature of his work:

He mauled me in front of my entire family on my nephew’s 8th birthday. He bit me on the arm, knee and hip, and what seemed like an eternity only lasted a few minutes. Many years later, having gotten to know lion behaviour a lot better, I realised that the real reason for him ‘attacking’ me was just him showing me who was boss in his territory. Basically a dominance display… Nonetheless, it was still a terrifying moment, especially because I had very little knowledge about how to act or react when a lion did something like that. He stood over me and played with me like a cat would with a mouse. Every time I made a move, he would make a move,

normally resulting in another bite. If I did nothing, he did nothing. Anyway, I was very thankful that I managed to walk away relatively unscathed, barring a few more scars on the body. It was, however, an important lesson and one which I still remember and hold on to… They can be rough and sometimes you can get hurt. It’s part and parcel of the job. I’ve met many people over the years who think they have what it takes, but the first time there’s a boisterous encounter, their primal instinct for survival kicks in and they call it a day. It’s particularly tricky working with lions aged between 2½ - 4 years, because they are strong enough to kill you and cheeky enough to try.”

WHAT ROUTINE? Kevin explains that there is no such a thing as routine in his life: “Routine? What’s that? Each day is different – whether I’m filming, interacting with people, spending alone time with the animals, travelling overseas, or simply just making sure that certain things are happening; no two days are the same. I like to multitask, so sometimes I’ll try killing two birds

with one stone, like Instagramming whilst sitting with the animals. Emails, social media and data wrangling can also take up a fair chunk of my day. Last, but not least, is my all-time favourite, which is hours and hours of Skype calls to people abroad.”

LION WHISPERER Kevin explains how he eventually accepted the title coined by a UK newspaper in 2007:

A photographer took some pictures of me interacting with the lions and they were sold on to different tabloids. I remember one in particular having the headline ‘The king of the jungle doesn’t frighten the lion whisperer’. At first I laughed, but the more I shrugged the name off, the more it stuck, until one day a friend of mine who was in marketing and brand development told me I was missing out on an opportunity and that I should embrace the title as it distinguished my brand from others.”

MESSAGE TO THE READERS

“Always be true to yourself and don’t waste your time worrying or thinking about what other people think or say about you. Don’t let the nay-sayers get the better of you, and stick to good morals and ethics to guide you on your path or road map as to where you want to be in the future.”

INSPIRATIONAL LIVING

33 Fish Eagle SA BLE HI LLS WAT ER F RO NT ESTATE

The American-British colonial-styled double-storey home of Rodger and Anita Pottie. 18

19

The couple gave the architect, Linda Lee, a sketch of what Rodger had in mind... RODGER SAYS: “I have a love for the more classical style of a home, perhaps inspired by the warmth of the beautiful Victorian red-brick homes in Pietermaritzburg, where I lived for a while. The ultra-modern ‘block and angled’ homes leave me cold. I love detail and harmony, so the house had to blend in with its surroundings, and if possible, bring the views ‘into’ the dwelling – hence lots of glass doors and windows to take advantage of one of the prime stands of the estate.”

ENTRANCE HALL & ARTS The staircase in the entrance hall, with its handcrafted wooden balustrade, also features a chandelier. Visitors are met with a beautiful view from the front door through the house of the bush and lake beyond. The wall above the staircase is dominated by a large singletile panel, created by Esias Bosch, South Africa’s deceased master ceramic artist and craftsman. The art and paintings in the home are all classic South African scenes done in oils or sand paintings, crafted by the hands of Matt Lourens, who was also commissioned by De Beers to do sand paintings for them.

BEDROOMS & BATHROOMS The home has three en-suite bedrooms, two of which have their own private lounge areas with a Jacuzzi bath in the main bedroom. Each of the four bathrooms has their own styled inlay patterned mosaic tile finish and heated towel rails.

Author: Isebell Gauché

LIFESTYLE & ENTERTAINMENT

Rodger explains their way of living: “We enjoy a quiet, private lifestyle and do not entertain a lot. I am a recently retired reconstructive surgeon. We prefer smaller family/ friend gatherings, and enjoy having friends stay over for a weekend or a few days. The house, however, could lend itself to entertaining even large groups of people.” Cool winter evenings become cosy social times with three gasheated fireplaces strategically placed throughout the home, and an outside boma for outdoor living and entertainment. The upper-level roofed veranda, with its gas braai, provides a stunning view of the Roodeplaat Dam. Rodger shares more details on the rest of the home: “For easier access to the upper floor of the house for elderly people, the house also has a glass encased lift.”

FINISHES FOR A NATURAL AMBIENCE Matt-finished sand-coloured granite from Namibia for working spaces and earthy warm floor finishes throughout the house provide for a soft ambience. The addition of rosewood wooden finishes leads to seamless blending with the red-brick colour of the house’s exterior.

WARM & WELCOMING KITCHEN The spacious kitchen offers large picture-frame views of the garden, has rosewood cupboards and a walkin pantry. The central cooking island is part of a granite table, where most family meals and visiting, according to Rodger, take place. The office area between the garage and the kitchen opens with glass sliding doors either into a private courtyard or the front garden.

NATURAL GARDEN The eco-friendly garden with its endemic trees and natural rocky outcrops blends into the surrounding bush and Rodger says that it is not uncommon to see impala and other wild animals graze in the unfenced garden.

RODGER SAYS: “I love this house because it has such a warm, homely feeling. It is airy, has no pokey corners and has enough space to swing a cat. Because I played a major part in its design, it features everything I could wish for in a home. Living in such peace and serenity in the African bush so close to nature, its plant life, birds and animals, yet so close to a major city is truly a very unique experience. This is truly a home where we are happy.”

BUSINESS & MARKETING

CUTTING DOWN ON MARKETING NOW

may cost you

MORE THAN YOU’D THINK

Today, brands like Chevrolet and Kellogg’s are still leaders within their specific industries. Indeed, many South Africans begin their day by making sure that they got it all this morning.

T

he one thing the above brands have in common is that when the going got tough during USA’s Great Depression of the 1930s, they never stopped their marketing campaigns. In fact, the opposite is actually true. During this financial time of darkness, these brands doubled their marketing efforts. MGM Studios, for instance, invented the “double feature”, which allowed patrons to watch two full-length feature films for the price of one. The phrase “Movies are better than ever” was also promoted at every movie house owned by MGM.

DID IT PAYOFF?

It most certainly did! MGM became one of the leading studios for the next 50 years. The fact that as much as 13-15million people couldn’t find work and struggled to put food on the table (many depended on soup

Author: Lulie Swanepoel

kitchens), yet were willing to spend money to go to the movies says a lot... and all because it made customers feel like they were getting a bargain. Over the decades, studies have shown that companies that continue their marketing campaigns during times of financial difficulties experience higher sales and profits – not only during this period, but afterwards too.

SOUTH AFRICA AT PRESENT

Many consider South Africa as already being in a recession, with wellrespected economists like Dawie Roodt exclaiming in June this year: “As far as I am concerned, we have been in a recession for the past year. The reason is our economy has been growing below the growth levels of our population.” Yet, with the number of unemployment on the rise, South Africans are spending more. For instance, on the opening day of

Mall of Africa on the 28th of April, there were at least 97 000 people. The queue at Starbucks was neverending and the specials offered nearly caused stampedes. If history has taught us anything, it’s that cutting down on your marketing and advertising campaigns during a credit crunch may actually cost you more than you’d think... and not in a good way. Yes, you may be cutting costs you deem non-essential now, but when you look in terms of long-term success, continuing to market your brand will ensure that you always remain top of mind. There is no substitute for brand awareness. There is no substitute for brand loyalty. So make sure that when it comes to your industry, your name is the first one that pops up on Google when a potential client is looking for what you have to offer.

WOMEN’S HEALTH

Breast

Cancer

DO YOU REALLY KNOW ENOUGH? One death, one mutilating unilateral mastectomy and one prophylactic bilateral mastectomy that ended in serious complications. My friend, my aunt and my neighbour...

For the past 25 years as a GP, I have been promoting mammograms. I attend the PinkDrive dinner every year and support several breast cancer organisations. Yet, the reality only dawns on you once breast cancer affects someone close to you. And the reality is that 1 out of every 8 women develop breast cancer during their lifetime. If you have 7 coffee-club friends, one of you will develop breast cancer. The question is how early will it be detected? Breast cancer remains the most common cancer among women. Considering that with the latest 3D mammography, namely *tomosynthesis, cancers can be detected at a very early age, breast cancer deaths should be far less, but ignorance or misconceptions deter many women from doing this fairly easy, and nowadays painless, yearly examination.

26

Regular self-examination of your breasts is important. Know every, lump, bump or indentation in each breast. Examine the entire breast, including the armpits, each month. The best time is just after menstruation.

RISK FACTORS FOR DEVELOPING BREAST CANCER

1

Age: The risk of breast cancer increases from the age of 35. More than three quarters of women who develop breast cancer are over the age of 50.

2

Family history: If a close blood relative, mother, sister or daughter had breast cancer, the risk to developing breast cancer is higher.

3

Genetics: Women with proven changes in the breast cancer genes (BRCA1 and BRCA2) have a very high risk of breast cancer. You can be tested for these genes.

4 5

Breasts: Women with dense breast tissue have a higher risk of breast cancer. Hormonal factors: Women who had their first menstrual period at a young age, those who reached menopause at a late age and those who had their first child later in life, as well as women who never had a full-term pregnancy, have an increased risk of developing breast cancer.

WHAT CAN I DO TO REDUCE MY CHANCES OF DEVELOPING BREAST CANCER?

• • •

• •

• •

Be aware of your family history and discuss any issues with your doctor. Discuss the use of hormone replacement therapy with your doctor. Maintain a healthy weight and pursue a healthy diet. Eat more vegetables, fruits and whole grain products, and eat less processed meat products such as hot dogs and burgers. Preferably, you should exercise daily, if not, at least twice a week for half an hour a day. Discuss the risks and benefits of medical examinations, such as CT scans, with your doctor to avoid unnecessary exposure to ionising radiation. Do not smoke. If you currently smoke, quit. Avoid exposure to secondhand smoke. Go for your yearly 3D mammogram.

Author: Dr. Surene Fourie | General Practitioner | SableMed Medical Practice (012) 808 1111 / 2222

6 7 8 9

Breastfeeding: Women who never breastfed have an increased chance of developing breast cancer. Hormone use: Long term use of hormone replacement therapy increases your risk. This includes any oestrogen products, particularly oestrogen and progesterone combination drugs. Personal behaviour: Some behaviours are proven to increase the risk of breast cancer. These include tobacco use and excessive alcohol use. Good healthy exercise reduces breast cancer incidence. Overweight or obesity increases the risk of breast cancer. Ionised radiation: Exposure to high levels of ionising radiation to the breast area increases women’s risk of developing breast cancer.

TOMOSYNTHESIS Tomosynthesis or so-called 3D mammography is the latest technology in breast screening and can detect an abnormal lump measuring only a few millimetres. It is important that if you go for any screening procedure, the latest technology with the best results is being used to ensure that your cancer will be detected at an early stage, and thus improving your chances of survival.

If you develop breast cancer, it can still be cured if it is detected early enough. Do not delay your breast examinations!

WOMEN’S HEALTH

Woman &

Emotional

Eating

28

Emotional eating is defined as the practice of consuming large quantities of food in response to emotions, instead of hunger. Women sometimes tend to consume their feelings instead of dealing with them. They need to be strong for their children, their husbands, and sometimes their elderly parents as well.

F

ood becomes a crutch and a coping mechanism when they yearn for love, acceptance and calmness. If you are an emotional eater, it is important to understand that another diet will not solve the problem. You need to identify the signs of emotional hunger versus physical hunger, and then you can work on a solution. Physical hunger is gradual and stems from a need to nourish. Emotional hunger is sudden and elicits cravings mainly for junk food. Emotional eating is always paired with feelings of guilt afterwards, because you eat to feel better, but end up feeling worse afterwards. You can curb emotional eating through consistency in training; use healthy eating habits and exercise to get rid of stress and negative emotions. Is it that easy? No,

but like my dad used to say: “if anything was that easy, everyone would have done it. Your successes and failures depend on your determination, and how bad you want to change. No one can make that decision for you. If you struggle with emotional eating, rest assured that you are not alone. Be patient with yourself and know that the road to recovery is sometimes one step forward and two steps back. Just keep on moving forward and do not expect perfection! Here are some basic exercises that you can do in the comfort of your own home. Remember, you need to start somewhere, so I am giving you the opportunity to start with an exercise routine, even if you do not belong to a gym:

SIDE PLANKS (EXERCISE THE OBLIQUES) While lying on your side, shift your elbow in line with your shoulder at a 90-degree angle. Straighten your legs (beginners can start a side plank with bended knees). Raise your hip off the mat and hold the extended position for 20-30 seconds. Swop sides and repeat, three sets on each side.

SKY CRUNCHES (EXERCISE THE ABDOMINALS) Lie flat on the floor. Place your feet on the floor and raise your knees 90 degrees (as if sitting on a chair). Stretch your arms upward and keep them straight. Lift your head and shoulders up from the floor and perform upward crunches, as if trying to reach for the ceiling with your fingertips. Complete ten reps, return to the starting position, and then repeat three times.

WALKING LUNGES (EXERCISE THE QUADRICEPS & BUTTOCKS) Stand tall with your hands on your hips. Take a big step forward, landing with your heal first. Bend both knees as deep as possible, step forward with the other leg and bend as deep as possible. Keep walking forward until you have completed 20 big steps. Rest for 10 seconds and repeat three times.

TOMATO AND RED PEPPER/CAPSICUM SOUP Ingredients: 30ml olive oil 2 medium-sized onions 2 cloves of garlic 3 red peppers 4 x 410g tins of peeled and chopped tomatoes 200ml red wine 1 litre chicken stock 15ml sugar

WHOLE BREYANI-STYLE CHICKEN Ingredients: 1 large chicken, cleaned and ready to use 45ml butter 15ml olive oil Salt and pepper Curry Paste: 15ml freshly grated ginger 10ml finely chopped fresh garlic 15ml cumin seeds 15ml ground coriander 2,5ml ground cinnamon 40ml masala curry powder 2 fresh chillies, de-seeded and finely chopped Water (just enough to mix into paste)

Make the soup: 1. Cut open and remove pips from the red peppers. Line baking tray with foil. Place the pieces with their skin-side facing up and grill until the skin blackens. Remove from the oven and leave to cool. Then peel the charred skin off. 2. Chop the onions and garlic, and fry in olive oil until soft. 3. Add tomatoes, red peppers, sugar, wine and stock, and simmer over a low heat for 15-20 minutes.

Prepare the chicken: 1. Pre-heat oven to 200°C. 2. Loosen the skin of the chicken carefully without tearing. Then work the curry paste in under the skin – make sure to get to the thighs and drumsticks! 3. Melt the butter and mix with the olive oil. Use a brush to baste the skin. Generously season the outside of the chicken with salt and pepper.

CHOCOLATE FONDANT IN TEA CUPS

Make the fondant:

Ingredients: 100g dark chocolate, melted 100g butter 100g icing sugar 2 eggs 2 extra egg yolks 30g cake flour 30g cocoa powder

1. Pre-heat the oven to 180°C. Coat 5 tea cups with Spray ‘n Cook and keep aside. 2. Cream the butter and icing sugar together until smooth. 3. Add the eggs and yolks one by one whilst mixing. 4. Add the melted chocolate and mix through.

TOP TIP

4. Cool slightly and liquidise. Add ground salt and pepper to taste 5. To serve: reheat, plate and garnish with fresh basil leaves and a dash of pouring cream.

4. Place the chicken on its side on the prepared baking tray and bake for 20 minutes, then rotate onto the other side for 20 minutes. Lastly, turn breast side up, add 125ml water to baking tray and continue baking for 20 minutes until golden. 5. Remove from oven, cover with foil and let it rest for another 15 minutes. Add some water to the sauce in the pan and pour over chicken before serving.

5. Add the cocoa and cake flour and mix together. 6. Spoon the batter carefully into cups – dividing it evenly between the 5 cups (until about half full). 7. Bake for 10-12 minutes (the centre should still be soft). 8. Remove and let them cool slightly. Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream, and garnish with strawberries or raspberries.

You can pre-make the batter and store in cups in fridge. Just add 2-3 minutes to the baking time. 33

In God

we can have

HUMBLE CONFIDENCE

36

I recently had lunch with a dear friend of mine. It was a lovely afternoon, but I was stunned at how critical she was of herself. My friend is intelligent, charming and compassionate, yet she couldn’t see any of that.

I

know she’s not alone, so many women feel the same way. Despite God’s assurance that He’s absolutely crazy about us, most women can’t believe He means it. Research shows that women are generally kinder, more nurturing and empathetic to others than men. At the same time though, women are also meaner, more dismissive and more critical of themselves. Why are we so hard on ourselves? We compliment, nurture and uplift others, but criticise ourselves. So many women think that they are not good enough! In our own eyes, we constantly fall below the mark. We compare ourselves to size-28 Hollywood starlets with Barbie-doll figures. Our pay cheque, our titles, our designer labels, or some other artificial measuring stick give us temporary access into the world of “The Accepted”. But in our hearts, we know it isn’t real. How do we find our way to the truth?

Remember it’s not about who we are. Instead, it’s all about who God is! In Christ we can have humble confidence.

WHAT A PHENOMENAL THOUGHT:

“CHRIST LIVES IN ME.” This new life takes us where we could never have gone ourselves. God transforms you through the life of Christ within us. Regardless of how hard we try, some days, sheer willpower isn’t enough to move us closer to where God wants us to be. So we try harder, but things just get worse. This is God driving us away from “try harder” Christianity. It’s God teaching us: “Not I, but Christ.” Our confidence is not in our ability, but in God’s ability. Trade self-confidence in for God-confidence and be yourself! God’s plan for you is not a one-size-fits-all solution. No, it is customised and just your size.

LUKE 14:10 (THE MESSAGE)

“But if you’re content to be simply yourself, you will become more than yourself.”

GALATIANS 2:20 NIV

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”

Therefore, focus on your unique Godgiven talents and realise who you are in Christ! -- Liesel

CREATIVE WRITING

I love my mother because...

T

o start a new chapter, a new beginning, a new universe with loads of adventures waiting to be discovered is like a pirate’s treasure map leading to a chest full of wonders. The hardest part is taking the risk and putting your trust in the map – hoping that its destination is true and just! I have fallen down a rabbit’s hole numerous times in my life; feeling like the sun has turned its face and left me stranded, alone in the dark with no one to help me and no light to guide me to safety. This might just be the worst emotion and most dreaded dream that one can experience. Standing at the end of the tunnel, seeing the light of hope moving beyond reach and screaming at the top of your lungs, but receiving only silence as a depressing answer. This is when I wonder… what happened to me, does anyone still care? But then, out of the blue, with no warning, no demand and no criticism, a helping, outstretched hand appears and it grabs hold of me, refusing to loosen its grip and risk the chance of letting me plunge back into darkness. It pulls me back into the light, a world where the sun still shines as bright and hot as a bonfire on a cold and chilly night and I know – this is where I want to stay! This is where I want to spend the rest of my life. But who is my saviour, who was the one willing to help me in such a helpless situation? Putting their neck out to save a wretch like me? Who could it be? A knight with a shield and sword, a priest with a Bible and the power that God has bestowed unto him or a nobleman stronger than a lion, bending the weak to his will with his pure magnificence? But no… I found myself staring at a face with eyes containing a spark brighter than the night stars, a smile bigger and friendlier than that of a child on his birthday, and with a heart as red as blood and big enough to contain and love a whole zoo! This simple, fierce, loving and courageous face belongs not to a noble warrior, nor a priest, but to my very own mother! My mother may be just another human, another face amongst a river of faces rushing back and forth as the stream of life takes each person down their own unique path, but not to me! You may not believe in old bedtime stories anymore, but in my world, there surely still exists a superhero!

My superhero might not have to battle a fire-breathing dragon, poisoned with gold sickness and stealing anything sparkling, but she has a battle of her own to win. “All that is gold does not glitter”, and so the world keeps on giving. Luckily, behind every player there’s a guardian, clothed in an invisibility cloak, looking after her player, keeping them safe and guiding them to becoming the best player that they can be. These cloaked guardians definitely aren’t acknowledged enough during the game, but without them, nothing would go smooth on these rocky roads that we follow each day of the year. As time passes and the game progresses, the levels get harder and the obstacles more challenging each and every step of the way. These challenges might be an emotional turmoil, rowing downstream in pure rebellion, broken and aching hearts or intellectual challenges. These cloaked guardians are always there, in the wings, ready to help their player fight or navigate these obstacles! I’ve come to realise that during the darkest times, the times when even the sun couldn’t bear the sight of me, there’s always been someone pushing me, motivating me, encouraging me and not willing to give up on me, even when I show no affection or appreciation! There is always that one person who will cast a rope while I am stuck in quicksand – when struggling on my own is only making it worse and causing me to sink deeper into life’s deception, and suffocating in all that’s going on in the unchangeable past and dreaded future. Constantly looking back to the past or ahead to the future makes us block out the people caring for us in the magnificent present! Behind every child, girl or boy, good or bad, there’s a cloaked guardian, a mother, a superhero, willing to love and care for her child. All we have to do is let them, and this is why I love my mom so much!

I’ve come to realise that during the darkest times, the times when even the sun couldn’t bear the sight of me, there’s always been someone pushing me, motivating me, encouraging me and not willing to give up on me...
