Literar y detective ‘Will Trent’ comes to TV

Television isn’t wasting any time introducing new shows for the new year, and one of the first brings a literar y sleuth to life.

Premiering Tuesday, Jan, 3, ABC’s “Will Trent” is inspired by Karin laughter’s best sellers about a nattily dressed Atlanta man who was raised in the foster-care system and now works for the Georgia Bureau of Investigations. Played by Ramon Rodriguez (“ The Wire ,” “ The Affair”), Trent has a human touch, but it doesn’t keep him from trading on-thejob barbs with his sometimes girlfriend police detective Angie Polaski (Erika Christensen, “Parenthood”), with whom he grew up, and who has her wn dark past.

The pleasant Rodriguez surmises that for novelist Slaughter, who isn’t a constant presence on the “Will Trent” set but has visited, “It’s got to be surreal and strange” to see her creation leap from page to screen. “You’ve had something in your head for years, and now it’s coming to life. As with all things, everyone has their own interpretation, but it was wonderful to meet her and just give her thanks for creating such a compelling character.”

Rodriguez admits he didn’t know the “Will Trent” books before joining the television project, but he then dove into them. I really fell in love with this character, how he functions with the secrets that he has, and how

‘The Honeymooners’ helps greet 2023

MeTV has made a tradition out of starting a new year with a festival of first episodes of classic series, and it holds to tradition by launching 2023 in that fashion on Sunday, Jan. 1. First up is “ The Honeymooners,” with an episode rather appropriately titled “ TV or Not TV,” in which neighbors and pals Ralph Kramden (Jackie Gleason) and Ed Norton (Art Carney) supposedly solve the subtitle’s quandar y by deciding to go in together on a new television set ... but then can’t agree on what to watch. Audrey Meadows and Joyce Randolph play wives Alice and Trixie.

An interesting thing about “ The Honeymooners”: Even though it’s regarded as one of the most classic sitcoms, only 39 episodes were made of the original version. That really isn’t a lot when one considers a show of its status, though later tales of Ralph, Ed and their wives were made for Gleason’s variety series.

he perseveres in so many ways despite everything he’s been through. There are parts of that that I definitely can relate to He’s just tr ying to figure out his way in the world, like so many of us are. ”

The well-groomed look, which others in the show often comment on, is a major component of the Will Trent character “Our incredible costume designer did an amazing job with these suits, which are a lot more favorable now than in mid-summer,” Rodriguez reflects. “How Will puts himself together and presents himself is a large part of who he is. It’s a sort of armor he puts on, and every time you wear that kind of suit, it changes you. There’s no way it can’t.” The actor appreciates that the suits also are “ a little baggy, a little loose.”

Rodriguez also is an executive producer of “Will Trent” along with Slaughter, Liz Heldens (“ The Dropout”) and others. Cast regulars also include Sonja Sohn – another veteran of “ The Wire” – as Trent’s boss Amanda Wagner and Iantha Richardson (“ This Is Us”) as his investigative partner Faith Mitchell.

“ We know how many procedural cop shows there are out there,” Rodriguez reasons, “ so with every aspect of this show, from the visual language to the characters to the stories, I think everyone involved is tr ying to elevate this into something that is unique.”

Fox a movie star as Marty McFly, whose journey into the past lands him in the midst of the courtship of his then-parents-to-be (Lea Thompson, Crispin Glover). Christopher Lloyd also plays a major part in the proceedings as Doc Brown. As a New Year’s Day treat, TNT is following the original movie with the two sequels.

Remedies to get you out from under the

Welcome to the new year, a time for hope, new beginnings, breaking bad habits and making good on resolutions. But first, you’ve got a hangover to deal with.

Yes, nothing says “Happy new year!” quite like the nausea, fatigue, splitting headache and extreme dehydration that come in the aftermath of being overserved. But how to put it in your past quickly and painlessly, well, there are numerous theories and solutions, some more repellant – and entertaining –than others. A few are detailed here.

Sean Evans tries out a few on “Sean in the Wild” (www.youtube.com/watch?vdMf8UEI067g), in which he’s joined by comedian Bert Kreischer to experience such international remedies as pickle juice (from Eastern Europe), tripe with red chili peppers (Mexico), pickled herring (Germany) and something called prairie oysters (U.S.), a concoction of Worcestershire sauce, tomato juice, vinegar, hot sauce, salt, pepper and a raw egg. Evans explains there is solid science behind that last one but it also just might be a case of the cure being worse than the malady

A remedy from our neighbors to the north gets put to the test in GQ Hangover Lab’s “Does Canada Have the Ultimate Hangover Cure?” (www.youtube. com/watch?vN7Rvjvw8xaw), in which the FrenchCanadian comfort food poutine – French fries, cheese curd and gravy – is fed to a man who claimed to have 20 whiskeys the night before. The result? Blood pressure and sugar are normalized, motor skills are improved and the subject is clearly feeling better. A more delicious way of killing a hangover there never was.

Carbohydrates are also part of USA Today Life’s “Hangover Remedies: 5 Easy Tips to Recover Faster” (www.youtube.com/watch?vkweq4720g08), which also include hydrating, pain relievers (except acetaminophen), B vitamins and zinc and the timehonored favorite, the hair of the dog, which really just delays the inevitable.
