Kitchen closing: ‘Rachael Ray’ bids farewell to daytime TV

After 17 seasons of weekday food and fun, the kitchen is closing for “Rachael Ray.”

That’s the program that goes by that name, not the title personality, who is already looking toward new media horizons for herself.

The last episode of her syndicated talk show airs Wednesday, May 24, and it’s sure to celebrate many of the top moments Ray has put forth over the better part of the past two decades — both as a culinary and lifestyle authority, and as someone whose interviewing skills have developed considerably during the show’s run.

“I’m a good cook who learned how to talk to anybody over time,” the ever-lively Ray says in assessing the longevity of her eponymous show, “and that’s because of practice. I have always believed that anybody in America can be successful at anything if they can close their eyes and see themselves trying it. If you’re not ashamed of where you come from, you never have to be ashamed of where you might go.”

When “Rachael Ray” began in 2006, its bubbly host already was widely known for the cooking shows she made principally for Food Network, including “30 Minute Meals,” a concept the former waitress and pub manager originated while she was a buyer for an upscale food market in Upstate New York. She parlayed that job into classes she taught to customers, which drew the interest of an area television station; the segments she did there paved the way for NBC’s “Today” to feature her regularly, then for Food Network to begin showcasing her. Recurring spots on “The Oprah Winfrey Show” progressed to the point where Winfrey became an executive producer of Ray’s own talk show from its inception.

Throughout the run of “Rachael Ray,” the host has had a true partner in her husband, musician and lawyer John Cusimano. Besides contributing melodically to the program, he effectively became Ray’s co-host when the coronavirus pandemic forced her to shift production from a Manhattan studio to the couple’s home in Lake Luzerne, New York

As for what lies ahead for Ray, she intends to work again with many of her “Rachael Ray” colleagues in channeling much of her focus and energy into her new venture, Free Food Studios. It has a commitment for an A&E series tentatively titled “Rachael Ray Meals in Minutes,” the first effort in a new library of programming she intends to build with fellow producers she has worked with before. She also plans to nurture new talent in the food-show space.

“There’s tons of great content out there, now more than ever,” Ray reasons. “We’re going to be working on platforms on multiple levels. The world is constantly changing in that way, and I feel so lucky as an American woman in her 50s to still be relevant. It’s exciting and cool, and it proves the point that you can do anything you want. ”

MeTV offers a ‘M*A*S*H’ salute to Harr y Mor gan c lassic corner

Veteran character actor Harry Morgan was very much a part of the heart and soul of “M*A*S*H” during the years he was on the Korean War-set sitcom, and many of his episodes are presented as his character — Col. Sherman Potter — is showcased as MeTV ’s month-long “M*A*S*H Maydays” festival continues Monday, May 22, through Friday, May 26. Though he had to seem as if he disapproved of the antics of such medics within his Korean War oversight as Hawkeye Pierce and B.J. Hunnicutt (Alan Alda, Mike Farrell), Potter often was chuckling because of them when he couldn’t be seen doing so However, one of his best stories here (shown on Thursday) is the bittersweet “Old Soldiers,” in which he returns from a trip that he keeps confidential ... until he reveals the deeply touching reason for it.

“Rain Man” (AMC, Monday, May 22): Dustin Hoffman won his second Oscar for best actor as Raymond, an autistic savant who meets his car-selling huckster brother Charlie (Tom Cruise). The latter wants to milk that newly discovered familial connection for any financial benefit he can get out of it, in the aftermath of their father’s death, but he develops different feelings during a road trip shared by the siblings. Valeria Golino also appears in the superb, Barry Levinson-directed 1988 drama.

“Witness” (MGM+, Thursday, May 25): Many moviegoers came to understand the Amish culture much more via director Peter Weir’s fine 1985 drama, with Harrison Ford as a Philadelphia police detective trying to protect a murder-witness youngster (Lukas Haas) while hiding from corrupt-cop peers. Kelly McGiillis plays the child’s mother, with legendary dancer Alexander Godunov, Danny Glover and Viggo Mortensen also featured.

“No Time for Sergeants” (Turner Classic Movies, Saturday, May 27): Andy Griffith starred as Army draftee Will Stockdale in three variations of the military comedy the original television play, the stage version and this 1958 film. The latter two also featured someone who would remain significant in Griffith’s career, Don Knotts. This is a rare humorous attraction in TCM’s Memorial Day Weekend of movies linked to the occasion, which is an annual tradition for the channel.

Ramsay returns: Gordon entices entrepreneurs in ‘Food Stars’

He’s been around for decades, but fans have yet to tire of the brutal honesty, invaluable tips and delicious recipes that superstar chef Gordon Ramsay ser ves. With shows such as “Hell’s Kitchen,” “Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares” and “Gordon Ramsay Un charted,” the Scottish chef has traveled to share his experience worldwide. Now, Ramsay is on the hunt for the next big name in food. “Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars” premieres Wednesday, May 24, on Fox, following the Season 13 premiere of “MasterChef.”

In this new series, Gordon makes his way out of the kitchen and into the boardroom, trading in his cast iron skillet and cutting board for revenue reports and marketing meetings, this time putting his own wallet on the line. An American adaptation of the British TV series, “Gordon Ramsay’s Future Food Stars,” the show follows Ramsay as he looks to find the next culinar y entrepreneur he’d like to (personally) financially support, offering the most impressiv contestant $250,000 to follow their dreams.

Ramsay tests these hopeful entrepreneurs in ever facet of r unning a successful business, challenging contestants at ever y phase of production, from initial marketing to product development.

“ The aspiring moguls will be challenged in all aspects of r unning a food enterprise, including creating, marketing and selling to real customers. ... As Ramsay pushes contestants to their limits, they’ll have to prove they possess the raw ingredients required to succeed – drive, dedication, creativity, passion and talent,” Fox said of the series in a news release.

Ramsay explained further in an inter view with Variety: “I’ve hand-picked some of the most promising culinar y innovators to compete for not only my investment but my partnership in business. They will have to hustle through tough challenges, break through and set themselves apart from the other
