‘All About Eve’ still is all about brilliance c lassic corner

Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz has more than a casual connection to the famous 1950 drama “All About Eve”: It was written and directed by his great-uncle, Joseph L. Mankiewicz, who earned Oscars for performing both tasks on the film. TCM shows the picture Sunday, May 7, and it’s always a guessing game whether Ben will invoke personal histor y in his surrounding segments under such circumstances.

The picture is the legendar y backstage stor y of an ambitious newcomer (Anne Baxter) who takes advantage of a star (Bette Davis) whose career is on the downslide. Indeed, as said in it, it’s “going to be a bumpy night.” The superb cast also includes George Sanders, Celeste Holm, Gary Merrill, Hugh Marlowe and Thelma Ritter

“Cast Away” (AMC, Friday, May 12, and Saturday, May 13): Director Robert Zemeckis’ somewhat underrated 2000 drama showcases one of the greatest challenges two-time Oscar winner Tom Hanks has had in his career. Playing a FedEx worker who ends up the lone survivor of a plane crash and must learn to exist on an otherwise deserted island, Hanks – holding the screen by himself for almost two-thirds of the movie – is thoroughly compelling to watch as he learns to make fire and “befriends” a volleyball that he names Wilson.

“NCIS: New Orleans” (TNT, Saturday, May 13): This spinoff still was very early in its run when “Carriers” aired as its second episode, with Michael Weatherly making a crossover appearance in his Tony DiNozzo role from the parent “NCIS” series. He helps Supervisory Special Agent Dwayne Pride (Scott Bakula) and the rest of the New Orleans team try to contain a potential outbreak of bubonic plague after a Navy lieutenant dies from the illness. Pauley Perrette and Rocky Carroll also play their “NCIS” parts.

Recognized worldwide for his innovative approach to Northern California cuisine, Tower left Chez Panisse to own San Francisco eatery Stars in the 1980s. Along way, he plated meals for everyone from the rich mous to local fishermen and by his own admission an enthusiastic participant in the drug culture meated the industry and helped fuel his own creativity
