The new special “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love” airs Wednesday on NBC.

Carol Burnett marks a big bir thday with NBC special

For anyone who’s ever thought Carol Burnett’s birthday should be a national event, now it is.

One way in which the much-beloved comedy icon will spend her special day Wednesday, April 26, is “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love,” NBC’s new all-star celebration of her The show will be filled with tributes from many of her friends and peers, including Dame Julie Andrews and former “Carol Burnett Show” cohorts Vicki Lawrence and costumer Bob Mackie as well as Cher, Lily Tomlin, Ellen DeGeneres, Steve Carell, Amy Poehler, Aileen Quinn (“Annie”) and Bill Hader (to whom Burnett learned she is related on PBS’ “Finding Your Roots With Henry Louis Gates, Jr.” recently).

Additional guests including Katy Perry, Bernadette Peters, Kristin Chenoweth, Billy Porter and Jane Lynch perform musical segments during the show, each commemorating a significant part of Burnett’s career Among those are Burnett’s portrayal of Miss Hannigan in the 1982 film of “Annie,” and her trademark singing of “I’m So Glad We Had This Time Together” (complete with ear-tug message to her grandmother) at the end of each episode of “The Carol Burnett Show.”

“It was quite a night,” six-time Primetime Emmy Award winner Burnett says of the March taping of the program. “I’m still kind of reeling from it. It’s not a roast or a birthday party, it’s really a variety show. A lot of my dear friends were there, and my ‘chum’ Julie Andrews was by my side the whole evening; she lives back East, and she flew out just for this. I was totally gobsmacked, I have to say!”

Burnett also has a Tony, a Grammy, a Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, a Presidential Medal of Freedom and a Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award among her many other accolades. Additionally, she has seven Golden Globe Awards, and that ceremony named an honor after her for contributions to television; appropriately, she was its first recipient.

The Burnett birthday event is, she reflects, “really a retrospective of everything I’ve ever done, practically, starting way back with my almost-first television appearance ... on ‘Omnibus.’ Then, (the special) covers ‘ The Garry Moore Show’ when I was a regular on that, and movies that I’ve done, and TV appearances other than my own show. But, of course, ‘ The Carol Burnett Show’ is in there, too.”

Expect the late Harvey Korman, Tim Conway and Lyle Waggoner to be seen bountifully in “Carol Burnett Show” clips during the NBC special, but there will be no doubt who the evening’s central talent is. And just as it’s been for so many years, those physically near her – as well as those watching at home – will be so glad still to be in her orbit.

‘Superman’ heads up, up and away on TCM

“You’ll believe a man can fly.” So said the ads for the 1978 screen version of “Superman,” and the phrase proved reasonably true. Turner Classic Movies presents the hugely entertaining film Sunday, April 23 – as part of the channel’s tribute to Warner Bros. on the studio’s 100th anniversary – and it made an immediate star of Christopher Reeve, who landed the central part (and made three sequels) after such names as Clint Eastwood and Steve McQueen had been bandied about for it.

This really is three stories in one: the infant Kal-El’s early life in another world with father Jor-El (Marlon Brando); the youngster’s upbringing in Smallville; and the grown Superman’s battle with villainous Lex Luther (an amusing Gene Hackman). Margot Kidder is reporter Lois Lane in director Richard Donner’s terrific cast and if you’re looking for more superheroism after ward, 1989’s “Batman” follows this.

“The Adventures of Superman” (Heroes and Icons, Sunday, April 23): Speaking of Krypton’s most famous son, this 1950s series repeats “Superman on Earth,” its opening episode that also brought the title character to our turf. Animation helps to show how a spaceship landed the hero-tobe in the company of the kindly couple who raised him before he headed to Metropolis and found employment as “mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent” (played as an adult by the very likable George Reeves).

“Baby Boom” (MGM+, Tuesday, April 25; MGM+ Drive-In, Saturday, April 29): This 1987 comedy ranks high among the movies that have suited Diane Keaton best. It addresses many themes that remain relevant more than 35 years later relationship commitment, professional vs. personal life, entrepreneurial spirit, and responsibility to oneself as well as to others. And in this case, the main “other” is an adorable infant named Elizabeth, with workaholic businesswoman J.C. Wiatt (Keaton) shocked to become the guardian of the orphaned child.

A book, a new home and a milestone for ‘Delicious Miss Brown’

It’s been an eventful past few months for Kar Brown.

This past fall, she moved into her dream home on the South Carolina coast, where she recently completed filming the the eighth season of her Food Network series “Delicious Miss Brown” (which included its milestone 100th episode). Also that October, she released her first book, “The W Home: A Celebration of Sea Islands Food and ily With Over 100 Recipes,” which quickly made its way onto the New York Times bestseller list. Brown had been considering writing a book for past four years but like with many things these days, the idea really got legs during the pandemic. After was approached by an editor at Harper Collins to a book in 2020, she found herself spending the next nearly two years developing and testing recipes, many of which were her interpretations of family recipes. The final product is dedicated to the place where her love of food took hold, the Sea Islands of S Carolina and Georgia, and those who taught her how to cook.

“I grew up in a family where my great-grandmother and my grandmother never wrote their recipes down,” Brown explains. “And so I realized this is my opportunity to pay homage to my grandmother and my great-grandmother, and this is a place where some of their recipes and my interpretations of their recipes could live.

“And so that’s why I knew that once this opportunity came – and it did – that this cookbook would be based on that, and it would also give people a glimpse into who I am. You know, everyone knows ‘Delicious Miss Brown’ but I wanted people to see who Kardea Brown was as well.”

As for “Delicious Miss Brown,” now in its eighth season on Sunday afternoons, she’ll also be trying out a few ideas in her brand new kitchen.

“I’m kind of doing a lot of fusion food so I’m mixing some of my Lowcountry spin,” she explains. “I have an entire episode dedicated to Greek and Middle Eastern cuisine. We’re going to do an episode where I go horseback riding with a friend, and so we’re going to do like a (Kentucky) Derby theme. We are going to celebrate some of the holidays like Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. and so there’s going to be some brunch items on the menu.

“Of course, we’re going to have lots of seafood,” she continues. “But yeah, we’re just switching up a little bit.”

Congratulations are in order for Fort Morgan, Colo., as the town is getting a visit from two popular home renovation duos and small-town aficionados — Ben and Erin Napier of “Home Town” and Dave and Jenny Marrs of “Fixer to Fabulous.”
