TCM has ‘Close Encounters’

Even if it didn’t contain five of the most famous music notes in movie history, “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” would be one of the most memorable science-fiction movies yet. Turner Classic Movies presents Steven Spielberg’s 1977 blockbuster Friday, March 10, as part of “31 Days of Oscar” – and the story he wrote, about alien-spacecraft sightings on Earth, is imbued with the humanity that has been his trademark. Spielberg reunited with two of his “Jaws” collaborators – star Richard Dreyfuss and composer John Williams – to tell the story of several people whose lives are changed, understandably, by unusual experiences eventually traced to the presence of extraterrestrials in our orbit. The late Melinda Dillon is wonderful as a mother distraught when her young son (Cary Guffey) vanishes. The resulting tale is universal in so many ways, it undoubtedly will continue to stand the test of time.

Explaining that she’s much more involved directly with the farmers on the show than with the women who are candidates to become their wives, Nettles likens her “Farmer Wants a Wife” role to that of “a fair y godmother, in a ‘mentor’ sort of way, to help them through this process. It is quite intimidating, I think, for them to take on a task like opening up their hearts and making themselves vulnerable – and doing it while cameras are around.”

Also an actress, having starred on Broadway in “Chicago” and “Waitress” and having made a couple of Dolly Partoninspired NBC holiday movies, Nettles maintains that music remains the strongest part of her professional mix. Her most recent solo album was the 2021 coverversion collection “Always Like New,” and she maintains that she isn’t certain when she might reteam with Sugarland partner Kristian Bush again.

“ There are lots of ways to tell stories,” Nettles reflects, who also has been making a movie in Atlanta lately “ While music is obviously my first love, I’ve been expanding over the past 10 years into TV and film and theater. That’s mostly been on the scripted side, but it’s fun to do unscripted things, too. It’s all worked out wonderfully well.”

“The Princess Diaries” (Freeform, Sunday, March 5): Julie Andrews is in fine, properly regal form in director Garry Marshall’s 2001 comedy as the royal grandmother of a teen (Anne Hathaway) who doesn’t suspect her lineage. She gets an entertaining crash course in being privileged when her accession to the throne appears imminent; co-stars include Mandy Moore, Heather Matarazzo and Marshall-film regular Hector Elizondo. The sequel “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement” runs immediately afterward.

“The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters” (get TV, Sunday, March 5): Kurt Russell’s acting career still was young when he landed the title role in this Western series, tracing a youth’s adventures as part of a wagon train. As the show progressed, it added a notable co-star midway through its lone season in Charles Bronson, whose movie activity was quite bountiful at the time. Here, the episode “The Day of the First Trail” features several of the singing Osmond brothers, who appeared multiple times as members of a family also in the group of westward travelers.

Conversation and drinks: When talk shows get spirited

It’s no secret that a few drinks can loosen lips and bring out the motormouth in even the most cloistered introvert. So imagine what it can do for folks who perform on camera for a living.

For makers of talk shows, that can translate to ratings gold as tipsy celebrity guests let their hair down, get silly and/or real and create the kind of buzz and publicity that money can’t buy. And for viewers, it can be downright fun to watch.

A new entry joins that subgenre with “The Wine Down.” Airing its second hourlong special Wednesday, March 8, on BET, it places R&B/ soul/hip-hop icon Mary J. Blige in the role of host as she cracks a bottle of wine and engages in raw, provocative, insightful and real conversations with guests from the worlds of entertainment, sports, politics and social media.

So while few other details were available at this writing, it has been announced that Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson will be this week’s guest to be engaged (and served) by Blige, who created the series with her production company Blue Butterfly Here are some other talk-with-drinks shows that viewers have sampled over the years.

“Late Night With Seth Meyers” (NBC): A fun element of this after hours talker is the segment “Seth Goes Day Drinking,” in which the host and a celebrity guest spend an afternoon imbibing at a New York City establishment. The antics get silly and all concerned have fun as Meyers plays impromptu games and engages the likes of recording artist Rihanna, talk show host Kelly Clarkson, chef Ina Garten and actress Retta. These days, these segments can be found on YouTube.

Director Phillip Noyce includes Liev Schreiber and Chiwetel Ejiofor in his cast — but this clearly is the energetic Jolie’s show. The film airs as part of a marathon honoring International Women’s Day.

Movie: Nobody’s Fool Writer-director Tyler Perry’s first R-rated feature, this 2018 romantic comedy stars Tika Sumpter as Danica, a marketing firm employee who is in a relationship with Charlie (Mehcad Brooks), a guy she connected with online a year ago, although the two have never met in real life. Her recently paroled sister, Tanya (Tiffany Haddish), is convinced Danica is being catfished by her internet love, however. Whoopi Goldberg, Omari Hardwick and Amber Riley also star.
