y People’ is an extraordinar y film

For his directing debut, Robert Redford couldn’t have done much better than “Ordinar y People.” The deeply moving 1980 screen version of Judith Guest’s novel – being shown by MGM+ Marquee on Monday, March 13, and MGM+ on Wednesday, March 15 – earned an Oscar for Redford among its four wins, which also included best picture. Timothy Hutton picked up a best supporting actor trophy as Conrad Jarrett, a profoundly troubled Chicago-suburb teen whose quest to come to terms with his emotions has a huge impact on other relationships.

The main one is that of his parents, Calvin and Beth, superbly played by Donald Sutherland and (in a notable break from the television image she had cultivated) Mary Tyler Moore. While Calvin is warm and concerned, Beth is cold and impatient and though he has tried to look past her flaws, that becomes all but impossible. The superb cast also includes Judd Hirsch and (in her film debut) Elizabeth McGovern.

This new miniseries examines two serial killers who were operating separately in the area of Baton Rouge, La. In 2002, Charlotte Murray Pace, an LSU graduate, was found raped and stabbed to death in her home in 2002. The crime reminded police of the unsolved case of Gina Wilson Green in 2001. Then, in March 1994, Ann Bryan was found murdered in her home at the St. James Place retirement community. Despite attempts to catch her killer, the case went cold. Part 2 immediately follows with the conclusion airing Friday.
