‘True Lies’ takes series form on CBS and Paramount+

Almost 30 years later, one of Arnold Schwarzenegger and James Cameron’s top movie hits is becoming a television series ... and that’s the truth.

The seriocomic adventure “ True Lies” premieres in its weekly form Wednesday, March 1, on CBS and Paramount+, basically remaking the 1994 film as the opening episode. Steve Howey (“Shameless,” “Reba”) assumes Schwarzenegger’s role as Harry Tasker, a super-spy whose wife Helen (Ginger Gonzaga of “SheHulk: Attorney at Law,” inheriting Jamie Lee Curtis’ earlier part) believes he’s a mild-mannered computer salesman. Once she learns what his real job is, she’s enlisted by his intelligence agency, and they frequently travel the world on missions – while tr ying to prevent their children (Annabella Didion, Lucas Jaye) from finding out.

“It’s the hardest job I’ve had yet,” states the good-humored Howey, who has no illusions about possibly being mistaken for Schwarzenegger as he generates his own “True Lies” under the leadership of executive prodicer Matt Nix (“Burn Notice”). “ This experience has taught me a lot about having an idea and then executing it,” Howey reflects, “because that doesn’t always pan out. Ever y episode of this gets better. And we get more tired.”

‘All the President’s Men’ helps keep Water gate relevant

Even if you know how it ends – and any histor y buff does – “All the President’s Men” guarantees re warding viewing, and Turner Classic Movies shows it Sunday, Feb. 26. The 1970s Watergate scandal that ultimately brought down the Nixon presidency has been welldocumented, one of the foremost recollections being the best seller by then-scrappy Washington Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein.

Robert Redford scored a coup for his Wildwood Enterprises production company by acquiring the movie rights for the drama released in 1976. It gets the atmosphere of a working newsroom absolutely right as Woodward (played by Redford) and colleague Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) are teamed on the stor y that will make their careers. William Goldman’s Oscar-winning script also provides well for co-stars including Jack Warden, Mar tin Balsam, Hal Holbrook and Academy Award recipient Jason Robards.

showcase for her She notes she feels “guilty” that she didn’t see the movie before landing the TV job: “I didn’t want to be influenced by Jamie Lee’s iconic performance. And then, I had to buy the DVD off eBay and a DVD player It was a whole ‘thing.’ ”

With Omar Miller (“CSI: Miami”), Erica Hernandez and Mike O’Gorman also featured, “True Lies” has been in development for TV since 2010, and Gonzaga reasons that it’s “good that it’s been a while.” Since Cameron also had other commitments (including the now-Oscar-nominated “Avatar: The Way of Water”), his longtime associate Rae Sanchini had more firsthand involvement in the casting; Tom Arnold, of the original movie, is a guest star on the show.

Being built for action, “True Lies” can put its stars at risk, as Howey learned close to the end of filming the first season.

“I was fighting a stunt man,” he reports, “and we did it once and it went great. Then we did it again, and he pretended to bounce his face off a wall ... and as he went back, my left hand went for ward into his neck, and it snapped my left ring finger back to the point where my nail hit my knuckle. And I finished the stunt, and when they yelled ‘Cut!,’ I snapped it back. Then I got an X-ray and sure enough, I broke the bone. And I thought, ‘ There’s a reason you have a stunt guy. Use him.’ ”

“My Fair Lady” (Paramount+, streaming): Producer Jack L. Warner didn’t consider Julie Andrews bankable enough to reprise her Broadway performance as Eliza Doolittle on film, ironically freeing up the actress for the role that earned her an Academy Award (in “Mar y Poppins”). Instead, he cast Audrey Hepburn – with dubbed singing by Marni Nixon – to star opposite stageversion returnee Rex Harrison, who won an Oscar for reprising the role of Professor Henr y Higgins, in director George Cukor’s hugely enjoyable 1964 musical take on “Pygmalion.”

“Leave It to Beaver” (MeTV, Sunday, Feb. 26): One of this sitcom’s best-remembered characters made his debut in a first-season episode that even was named for him, “Lumpy Rutherford.” Played by Frank Bank, he starts out as sort of a bully; when Beaver and Wally (Jerr y Mathers, Tony Dow) decide his tormenting of them calls for revenge, they hatch a scheme that unfortunately ends up targeting the wrong person ... Lumpy’s father, Fred (Richard Deacon).

Welcome to the dead of winter, a time when the northern two-thirds of the country thinks about hitting the road to the southern third for a sorely needed respite from the cold.

If that description fits you – and you happen to also be a foodie who likes to check out celebrityowned restaurants – we’ve assembled a list of eateries in said southern third that you may find are worth your hard-earned vacation dollars.

Jason Aldean’s Kitchen + Rooftop Bar: Southern food and live entertainment are the bread and butter of this Nashville establishment co-owned by the country music star, which offers up a varied menu of burgers, salads, sandwiches and steaks, and is highlighted by a 32-ounce “Tommy Hawk” bone-in ribeye. And if you’re just coming for drinks, sipping a cocktail or beer at the rooftop bar is an experience not to be missed.

Meril: Located in New Orleans’ Warehouse District, Emeril Lagasse’s fourth Big Easy eatery has a casual atmosphere and an open-style kitchen, from which some of the chef ’s favorite dishes are prepared, such as wood fired flatbreads, Korean chicken wings and a fettuccine Nero. Hell’s Kitchen Caesars Palace: As one might think, Gordon Ramsay is behind this eatery on the Las Vegas Strip that’s inspired by his TV series of the same name. Here, guests will feel like they’re on the show’s set as they dine on entrees ranging from beef wellington and crispy skin salmon to vegetarian offerings such as a quinoa salad and an artichoke risotto And the cocktails are exotic and imaginative.

Morimoto Asia: If you happen to be at Florida’s Walt Disney World and get a hankering for Asian, this restaurant from Iron Chef Masaharu Morimoto is worth a try. It features a menu of pan-Asian favorites such as ribs, sushi, Peking duck and wagyu beef as well as more exotic fare like orange chicken and a Mongolian filet.
