‘1923’ of fers another prelude to ‘Yellowstone’

As it expands once more, the “Yellowstone” franchise is looking to the past again.

The new show’s title offers sufficient proof “1923” starts its run Sunday, Dec. 18, on Paramount+, with Harrison Ford (in his first continuing series part) and Oscar, Primetime Emmy and Tony winner Helen Mirren as Jacob and Cara Dutton, who head another division of the family that also is central to “Yellowstone” and its first prequel show, “1883.” The relatives face such plights as illness and drought as they tr y to edge into then-modern times. The Taylor heridan-created series has a second season of eight episodes, the same length as Season 1, already ordered. Being filmed principally in Montana, “1923” is “a wonderful adventure” in Mirren’s view. “I’d never been to Montana before, so that’s been a revelation,” the actress says. “I knew it was impossibly beautiful, but the size and the variety of it is extraordinar y. Doing this kind of stor y in this kind of landscape, where they are intrinsically tied together, is an amazing experience. The geography of America has always fascinated me, and these (characters) are dealing with all the glories and difficulties inherent in that.”

‘A Ver y Brady Christmas’ unites the ‘Bunch’ again

Countless television characters have been involved in memorable holiday stories, but one of the most beloved involves a reunion of “The Brady Bunch.” MeTV presents the 1988 TV movie “A Very Brady Christmas” Sunday, Dec. 18, and though it involves a dramatic element that wasn’t part of the original sitcom, the actors and characters were so familiar to so many that hardly anyone complained.

Family matriarch Carol (Florence Henderson) is on a mission to get all the Bradys back together at the fashionable homestead for the yuletide, and once they’re all back under the same roof with her and Mike (Robert Reed), the now-grown kids have a lot to reveal. And Mike has his own concerns, thanks to pressure to cut corners on a building he’s designed. Jennifer Runyon replaces Susan Olsen as Cindy, but all of the other main originating cast members are back.

Sklenar (“Mapplethorpe”), Marley Shelton, Brian Geraghty (“Big Sky”) and Jerome Flynn (“Game of Thrones”). Mirren reports that rather than being detailed about her role at the outset, creator-producer Sheridan gave her “a sense of, ‘Do you want to come on this ride?’ We don’t know where the ride’s going to take us, and I found that really interesting and exciting.”

Mirren first worked with Ford in the 1986 movie “ The Mosquito Coast.” She recalls that as “a great time, then we went off and did other things and lived a whole life, really There’s been a connection that has never been lost, though so when we came together again, there was an incredible sense of familiarity and affection and histor y. That’s invaluable if you’re playing husband and wife.”

Though Mirren won two of her Emmys for “Prime Suspect” mysteries, she doesn’t consider those as series in the same way “1923” is.

“I’ve never done something like this before,” she maintains. “With ‘Prime Suspect,’ we would do one four-hour stor y about every two years, so it was more like a miniseries. It wasn’t something ongoing like this is, though how far we’ll go is a myster y to me. I have to say that Taylor is an extraordinar y writer; this springs with such complexity, but at the same time, it’s incredibly accessible. It’s not highfalutin’, but very playable, great writing.”

As others debate the man’s true identity, Edmund Gwenn gives an Oscar-winning performance opposite a young Natalie Wood, who plays a skeptical youngster eventually on the verge of becoming a true believer Maureen O’Hara and John Payne also star in director-screenwriter George Seaton’s fantasy that has charmed generations – and also has inspired several remakes, though those don’t come close to matching the overall appeal of this 1947 original, now celebrating its 75th anniversary.

“The Bishop’s Wife” (Prime Video, streaming; Turner Classic Movies, Saturday, Dec. 24): It’s also the 75th anniversary of this holiday-season favorite, which offers Cary Grant as a suave angel sent to Earth to help a bishop (David Niven) who has lost his way, whether he realizes it or not. Grant and Niven were cast in each other’s roles until director Henry Koster joined the project and made the switch. Loretta Young also stars.

Set yourself up for success with PBS’ ‘Mar y Berr y’s Ultimate Christmas’

If planning the Christmas dinner menu is keeping you up at night, Mary Berry has a solution that will have your guests talking about it for years in a special coming to PBS.

In “Mary Berry’s Ultimate Christmas,” airing Monday, Dec. 19 (check local listings), the chef, author and judge on “The Great British Baking Show” comes forth with her ultimate Christmas feast using recipes that she’s perfected over 50 years.

So in the hourlong program, she’ll prepare a three-course meal that starts with a stilton and sage mini scone canape, followed by a traditional dinner of lemon and herb roast turkey with crispy roast potatoes, ruby red cabbage and apricot and chestnut stuffing. And for dessert, there is a traditional British Christmas pudding and a festive trifle with layers of custard, sponge cake and pear topped with spun sugar.

Berry also drops in on friends who share their own holiday favorites and she gives tips creating a sustainable, cost-conscious centerpiece.

There’s plenty of information here to help the home cook be successful and Berry says it all starts where every project does.

“It’s all about organization and planning,” she says. “Once you know how many guests are coming, sit down and choose the recipes, make your lists, preorder some things like your turkey. You don’t want to run out of foil or coffee, for instance, so make sure you stock up but with the right amounts – don’t over-order.”

“Then on the morning of the big day, it’s lovely to plan your seating plan so that people enjoy each other’s company, and dress the table well. I like to think of it like a play, a performance.”

But there are ways of keeping costs down, says Berry, such as sticking to a shopping list and not overbuying.

“For example, think about if you need lots of different sweetmeats or cheeses,” she says. “Just one or two lovely varieties is fine. You don’t need lots of chocolates, a taste is good ... . Also, do accept help to keep the costs down. If your guests offer to bring the pudding or some chocolates or contribute to some wine, it’s lovely to agree. ”

And if people come into the kitchen, Berry says don’t be shy about accepting help

“I love people in the kitchen ...,” she says. “There are always last-minute jobs like preparing the sprouts, stirring the gravy or finishing the canapes, setting the table or the name places. I love to give people a job to do if they offer.”

Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer

This 1948 animated short film gives fans a glimpse at the original version of our favorite reindeer. Based on the 1939 poem by Robert L. May, it follows closely to the poem’s version, rather than the 1949 song by Gene Autry. Here, Rudolph is teased by other reindeer children for his red nose. Saddened, he returns home, hangs his stocking and dreams of Santa, only to have Santa arrive at Rudolph’s house during a storm and suggest Rudolph help light the way.

Every winter, Michael J. O’Connor (Charles Ruggles), the second richest man in the world, vacates his 5th Avenue mansion for a warmer climate. And, every winter, Aloysius T. McKeever (Victor Moore), a homeless man, and his dog move into vacated mansions. This particular winter, McKeever meets Jim Bullock (Don DeFore), an Army veteran who has recently been evicted from his apartment and offers to share the mansion with him. Soon, the mansion has a few more guests than expected in this 1947 classic.

Swifty the Arctic Fox (voice of Jeremy Renner) works in the mailroom of the Arctic Blast Delivery Service, but hopes to become a star courier. To prove his ability, he commandeers a sled and delivers a mysterious package to a secret location. There he stumbles on a hidden fortress run by Otto Von Walrus (voice of John Cleese), a blubbery evil genius, and Swifty must enlist the help of his friends to save the world in this 2019 animated comedy. James Franco, Heidi Klum and Anjelica Huston are also heard.

Movie: White Christmas

Some purists may sniff that 1942’s “Holiday Inn,” of which this 1954 musical is a partial remake, is a superior piece of work. The fact remains that this latter vehicle for Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen has become a compulsory part of the yuletide celebration for millions around the world. The classic title tune is just one of several memorable Irving Berlin melodies performed here with style, heart and panache.
