USA DANCE TIDEWATER CHAPTER Volume 1, Issue 8

March 2010

President’s Message- Raymond Smith For the first time in about 4 years we have a full Board and elected Officers. In addition, we have a number of volunteers to work on some of the committees. That equates to around 10% of the membership, which currently stands at 130. The rest of the Board and I have some visions and goals for this year which I feel are attainable if we can get the support of the Chapter members behind them. First, we will be working to increase membership by 20%; that would be 26 new members while retaining our current members. We have initiated some incentives to accomplish that goal but the best method for getting new members is current members referring/bringing in people. Second, we will be working at reducing the red ink we sustain from our monthly dances. Last year we averaged a loss of $145 per dance. The Chapter put out an information paper on possible ways that we could do that but we received no responses to that initiative. I would like to form a committee to look at possibilities and come up with some recommendations for the Chapter Board. The Committee would be chaired by a Board member with 5-7 committee members. If you would like to make a difference in the Chapter by participating in this Committee, please contact me or Donna Campbell, the Executive VP.

I look forward with anticipation to a brighter year for our Chapter. We accomplish much more than most Chapters do and for that you all should be proud.

Third, now that we have a VP for Youth/College, Dr. Tom Somma, we are looking to expand our outreach in that arena, including an initiative to get ballroom dancing into the local Special Olympics. If you feel that you have a vision and/or capabilities for this program, please contact Tom directly. Fourth, from the recent surveys we have conducted, the location and inconsistent quality of the dance floor is a factor affecting attendance. I plan to have a committee formed to look at possible alternate locations for our dances. If you would like to participate in this committee, please contact the VP for Social Dance, Kay Niman-Meyers. Your efforts in support of these goals will not go unrewarded. The accomplishment of these goals will result in a better dance environment and experience. In addition, by partaking in our Incentive program, depending on the amount of time you devote, you can be rewarded in kind with free admission to dances, workshop lessons, dinner dance tickets, etc.

WE NEED VOLUNTEERS USA Dance of Tidewater appreciates assistance from chapter members with upcoming events, helpers on committees and members to serve as assistants to our board members and officers. Call (757)467-3601 for more information. Other incentives for your services and volunteer work will be considered for compensation by your current officers and board members. One thing everyone could do to help out would be to print the attached flyers, and post them at work, the base, school bulletin boards, your doctor's office or wherever it would be appropriate.
