Urban regeneration - Johannesfred, Bromma, Stockholm

Johannesfred, Bromma, Stockholm URBAN RENEWAL PROPOSAL

School Project: Final Thesis Site Location: Stockholm Considering the need for new residential development, as well as the possible closing of Bromma Airport in 2038, the project comes with a feasible solution for the Industrial area from Johannesfred. The concept takes into account the demands made by Stockholm’s citizens (from a targeted survey on the need of a new urban center) and the data available in the City Plan. I am working with a combination between a grid of streets and a matrix of activities. The proposal is based on the importance of public space, infrastructure, as well as equilibrium between functions.

GENERAL DYSFUNCTIONS Lack of plazas (public space) inside the district The sit is more then 800 m away from a plaza and more than 500m away from a park amenajat. Lack of bike lanes. Small selection of architectural programs: commercial, industry etc. Low density. Lack of an efficient connection with the water. Possibility of flooding.

OPPORTUNITIES The waterfront area is partially accesible. There is the possibility to create a continuous public space along the waterfront. The train crosses Norrbyvägen at a lower elevation. Two bridges already connect the site with Solna. The entire eastern part of the site is outlined by water. Already existing green spaces are situated both in and outside the site area.

The proposal is based on 3 general concepts: UX, Landscape and SMART Cities, while also taking into consideration urban regeneration patterns that have had good results in a similar context. It also takes into consideration the requirments from the City Plan 2018 - like the need for housing, education and new jobs. During the planning process, a dialog with YIMBY members and other citizens was developed. Other plans (ex. SL strategy) were also taked into account while developing the general strategy.

Public space is the backbone of this project. Alongside public space especially near the waterfront, multiple functions can appear and increase the value of the land: commercial, sport, HUB, housing, cultural etc. Urban design, both on land and on water is an essential part in this project. The general concept is presented in this pages, yet the detailing of the pavillions will be solved in a future architectural / urban design project. The general rules stated here are to be kept in mind and used when relevant.
