Breaking new ground on the river Alan Crawford first paraplegic is Paddle Georgia By Daniel Bell The Newswire Editor danielbell@romenewswire.com During the annual Paddle Georgia event more than 300 people kayaked or canoed from North Georgia to Rome — but only one participant can claim to have broken new ground during the 92-mile trip. Alan Crawford of Silver Creek is a paraplegic. And now he can say he is the first (and only for at least a year) paraplegic to have taken part in the weeklong event that began on the Upper Coosawattee before crossing Carters Lake and following the Oostanaula to downtown Rome. “Basically, Alan took a leap of faith in doing this trip. He trusted his own determination and fortitude and made his dream reality. I think it’s interesting that a man that can’t leap showed all of us how to do it properly,” said Joe Cook, executive director and riverkeeper for the Coosa River Basin Initiative. “I think he was an inspiration to a lot of people on the trip, and hopefully his accomplishment will be an inspiration to others who are battling disabilities.” For his part, Crawford said the trip went pretty much as he expected it would, and that his only worries had been about the white water rapids in North Georgia. He uses a sit-on-top style kayak, and he was worried he might tip over and require a little help to get back in his boat. “I was afraid people would have to pick me up and turn me back over. I was afraid I’d come back with the nickname ‘Bob.’” Other than that, he said the distance wasn’t anything he isn’t already comfortable with, and he was ready to do it again once the trip was over because

Left: Alan Crawford, a Silver Creek resident, paddles through the rapids of the Upper Coosawattee River. That river challenges paddlers with Class 1 and Class 2 rapids. Below: Crawford exits the river on the Crawford Crawler with some help from fellow Paddle Georgia participants.

Photos by Joe Cook the seven days seemed to fly by. He also said the other people taking part in Paddle Georgia, as well as the volunteers and spectators along the way, made the trip worth while. “I was really surprised by the greetings in every town. How they put this trip together every year is just amazing. They work their tails off,” said Crawford. His favorite souvenir is a cap given out to every participant by Paddle Georgia organizers. Crawford’s though has more than 200 signatures of his fellow paddlers. Though this was his first year on the trip, he almost participated in 2008, but Cook was concerned the rivers might be so low in places because of drought that some walking would be required — and he was right. The Flint River was dry and participants had to

walk several miles with their boats in tow, something that would have proved impossible for Crawford, who started kayaking again just last year. He says he grew up around lakes and rivers and always loved fishing and boating. In 2005, after years of battling sarcoidosis in his lungs, the disease took a turn for the worse and attacked his nervous system. Muscle cramps turned to feelings of numbness, and one day while walking to the kitchen he collapsed on the floor with no feeling in his legs. For months after his initial paralysis he battled not only his new physical challenges but also the depression associated with lost independence. A trip to CRBI’s Waterfest in 2008 changed that. He participated in canoe/kayak races that day, got himself a kayak

and hasn’t looked back. He began by volunteering for CRBI, a cause close to his heart, and taking part in their regular outings. To reach his Paddle Georgia goal, however, a bit of ingenious design and construction was required. “At first I didn’t know if I could do, because I had trouble getting in and out of the water around here,” said Crawford. “I realized I couldn’t get down (to some places on the river)

without someone breaking their back picking me up by rolling down the hill.” He solved that problem when he sketched out what is now known as the Crawford Crawler, a four-wheeled contraption that can be rolled into the water, allowing a kayak to easily be put in and removed from the water. Cook said he hopes Crawford’s effort will inspire others to take part in such events.

RomeNewswire sells pork for fire department About $2,400 was raised to help fund Fire Fighters Memorial Plaza By Daniel Bell The Newswire Editor danielbell@romenewswire.com Romans who saw smoke coming from Jackson Hill on a recent Thursday were advised not to call the RomeFloyd County Fire Department, because the fire department is already there. RomeNewswire’s Jerry Duke and several representatives from the fire department were at the Civic Center all throughout the day and into the night smoking pork butts that the two organizations sold to raise money for the Fire Fighters Memorial Plaza. Beginning at about 9 a.m. Duke and others began loading 96 pork butts — almost 670 lbs. of meat — onto one of the three pull-behind smokers being used to cook the meat. At $25 each, RNW and the fire department raised about $2,400, and all the profit goes to the memorial plaza. “We enjoy getting involved in the community. It’s our

Anyone who purchased a butt may pick them up beginning at 10 a.m. Friday at the Civic Center on Jackson Hill. This is

a change from the orginal plan, but a sign will be placed at the downtown fire department directing those who go there to

Jackson Hill. The Fire Fighters Memorial Plaza is still in the earliest planning stages right now, said Capt. Gordon Henderson. The plaza will be located behind City Hall at the intersection near the Rome-Floyd County Library and the law enforcement parking deck. It is likely to be an expensive project, said Gordon, and the bronze statue they plan to include could cost $25,000 alone. “We really have just started a concentrated effort, but it’s been in the planning stages for years,” he said. Because they are so early in the process, Gordon said a method for gathering donations has not yet been established, and he credited Duke and RomeNewswire with the pork butt fundraiser for getting the ball rolling. “We really appreciate what Jerry did by getting this started. It was all his idea,” he said. Duke said he hopes to make the event an annual tradition.

Republican candidate for governor walking Georgia

Rep. Austin Scott, a Republican from South Georgia who announced his campaign for governor in January, walked into Rome recently as part of his “Walk of Georgia” campaign. The 14-year state representative walked 15 miles from Haywood Valley Road to downtown Rome via U.S. 27, Martha Berry Boulevard, Second Avenue, Broad Street and Turner McCall Boulevard. “I’ll be in a better shape when it’s over than I am today,” he said on a recent Tuesday morning just after crossing over the Second Avenue bridge near Bridge Point Plaza. Scott said he had stopped along the way to visit the Georgia State Patrol Post in Armuchee and to speak with a police officer he encountered, as well as other Romans he passed along the way. After his walk he planned to make several appearances to talk with supporters, including a local car dealership, Redmond Regional Medical Center, Floyd Medical Center, and a few other offices he’s been asked to stop by. Scott says he always stops anytime he passes a state agency, but also said he’s open to requests to stop anything along his route, which began last Saturday in Chickamauga and will take him through 48 counties and over more than 1,000 miles on foot. The planned route will take Scott

south, following closely the state border with Alabama; then directly east through South Georgia before turning north toward South Carolina; then northwest along the border with that state until he reaches the northest corner of the state; finally he’ll turn southwest and head to Atlanta to end his trip at the State Capitol. “The first day was pretty hot, but today has been cool and yesterday was pretty cool,” said Scott. He plans to walks 10-20 miles each day of the campaign and said he’ll walk at least 10 miles everyday regardless of the weather. The only exception has been Sunday, when he only walked nine miles so he could make it to church in LaFayette on time. The following day, however, some extra miles were put in by the pastor of that church, who joined Scott on his walk. Scott said his “Walk of Georgia” is a grassroots effort to talk to Georgians and find out what they want from the government, instead of having the government tell them what they’ll get. It’s also a way to get around the state without spending a lot of money, as he and his team have been staying in state parks during the trip. “When we announced in January we didn’t think we could raise as much money as some of the other candidates,” so this is a way to speak with Georgians and hear their questions, he said, explaining that the goal is to raise $100 for 100 people in 159 Georgia counties.

OPINION

This month I want to share with you several items of interest that have come across my desk recently. The first is a subject that is my personal soap box — weight loss gimmicks. As a Registered Dietitian for more years (decades) than I care to reveal, I have promoted the boring and totally unsexy, but effective way, to lose weight — diet and exercise. We hear it so much that I do not believe it really registers. I even get tired of saying it, and hearing it, myself. But what we eat (and don’t eat) and whether or not we use, move, and challenge our bodies is truly the only way to lose weight and, more importantly, keep it off. It has always saddened me to see marketers taking advantage of the desperate and the hopeful. But it seems no matter how many products or diets we have tried and how many times we have been disappointed, we seem to always be ready to accept the promises of yet another “miracle” diet, product or book. It saddens me to see the slick marketers stealing your money, but it makes me angry when I see the actual physical harm done. Money can be replaced, our health cannot. An increasing number of weight loss drugs and supplements are being recalled due to their link to health problems. One that received a great deal of attention recently was Hydroxycut, which is marketed as a fat burner and considered to be a low-cost diet aid. It was recalled by the FDA because of liver injuries resulting from the drug, some leading to death. There were 14 different Hydroxycut products initially recalled by the FDA. It has not yet been determined by the FDA which components of the product are causing the liver damage. In addition to liver damage suffered by some who used the product,

other health problems have also been linked to Hydroxycut. They include kidney problems, muscle damage and cardiovascular problems. The company that makes Hydroxycut is voluntarily stopping sale of the products. The FDA has advised any consumers who are using the products to stop taking them immediately. Those who are trying to lose weight are better off to use natural methods of achieving weight loss and weight control than by taking potentially dangerous weight loss supplements which too often contain harmful ingredients. This has been proved time and time again as various weight loss supplements have been recalled by the FDA and deemed to be unsafe. Hydroxycut is one of a long list of weight loss products that have been recalled due to adverse health effects. Another subject that is near and dear to my heart is naturally and organically grown foods. Everyone knows that foods grown without synthetic chemicals are safer, but the debate has raged on for years as to whether they are actually healthier than conventionally grown food. Jon Ungoed Thomas has written an article for The Sunday Times (U.K.) simply titled “Official: Organic Is Really Better.” His article presents a brief synopsis of the European Union funded, four year project that looked at the many benefits of organic farming and food (research results published in the Handbook of Organic Food Safety and Quality, edited by Julia Cooper, Carlo Leifert and Urs Niggli, 2007). From the consumer health perspective, some of the reported findings are a true wake-up call. Here is a small sample of the findings: Beneficial antioxidants in milk were 90 percent higher in cows fed organic feed and pastured

By Janice Holley Houck (grass fed) compared to milk from conventional herds. Higher levels of Vitamin E, omega-3 and beta carotene were found in the organic cow’s milk, and also in the flesh of organically fed, free range chickens compared to factory farmed birds. Organic fruits and vegetables had as much as 40 percent more antioxidants (polyphenols, flavonoids, Vitamin C and lutein) that can help cut the risk of heart disease and cancer, as well as higher levels of beneficial minerals, while harmful elements such as lead, mercury, aluminum and nitrate were “significantly lower” compared to conventionally grown produce. It’s finally official. You build and enjoy the benefits of good health by eating foods grown in healthy vibrant soils, and so do the other animals. As a beekeeper, another subject near and dear to my heart is the incredible honey. Honey is nature’s original antibiotic and is making a medical comeback. Honey dressings and gels are growing in popularity overseas, and several American hospitals are using dressings infused with the golden elixir to treat stubborn, infected wounds and surgical incisions. Australian hospitals have found it to be very effective against the antibiotic resistant strain of staph (MRSA) and are now using it as their primary protocol to fight this difficult infection. Have a wonderful July. Remember to stay hydrated – drink lots of water. Here ’s to happy, healthy living! Janice Holley Houck, M.A., RD/LD, psychologist, nutritionist, life coach, organic farmer and owner of Loving Hearts Pharm & Wellness Center, can be reached at 706-234-2862 or by e-mail to Janice@lovingheartswellness.com.

John Moon: Ask the handyman Dear John: I don’t know if this is something you can answer or not, but I thought I’d give it a try. I have an older car that still has R12 freon in it. When I took it to my mechanic to get it serviced he said it needed to be converted to R134 but that it might not cool as well after that. When I asked why, he didn’t or couldn’t give me a satisfactory answer. Can you? Just Curious Dear Just Curious: The bottom line on R12 vs. R134 is that R134 is not as efficient of a refrigerant as R12. When the automotive industry went to R134 around 1993 to comply with EPA and Federal regulations, it had to increase the size of the condensing units (the radiator looking thing in front of the radiator) and make a few other alterations in order for the R134 systems to cool as well as the R12 ones did. If you just swap refrigerants on an older car and make no other changes, it’s quite

M oo n

The Health Nut(ritionist)

John Moon

possible the condensing unit will not adequately condense the R134 refrigerant to allow or provide the same amount of cooling as the R12 did. If you decide to go ahead with the conversion, ask your mechanic about installing a new, higher efficiency condenser as part of the process. You might even consider installing an electric fan on it as all newer cars have. These help to provide better cabin cooling when the vehicle is idling or moving slowly. If it were my car and the R12 system worked OK, I would just leave it alone. I see no beneficial reason to convert one unless a repair is needed. I’m falling back here on the old adage: If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Also, if mine just needed a little topping off on the refrigerant, I would consider one of the several replacements for R12, such as “Freeze 12,” in lieu of making the conversion. E-mail your questions to the hanyman at johnm@ RomeNewswire.com.
