Rome has vital online presence

From luring visitors to discussing smells, the city’s web world is varied By Daniel Bell The Newswire Editor danielbell@romenewswire.com To get a hint of the impact of the Internet on Rome, or vice-versa, one can start by searching “Rome, Ga.” on the popular search engine Google. On a fast enough connection, within .08 seconds more than 1,020,000 hits will be available to peruse. But dig a little deeper and the story gets a bit more interesting ... and maybe a little disturbing. It’s not surprising that a city with so many colleges, businesses, churches, hotels, people, and even news organizations would return such a high number of results when such a wide search net was cast. What is surprising is the variety and uniqueness of some of the things out there, like the Facebook group titled “Rome, GA smells like Bacon at night.”

Domain names

There are many Web sites out there that feature “Rome” in the domain name, and those sites offer a wide range of Internet options. The Rome Chamber of Commerce, for example, offers www.romega. com, where surfers can find job listings, chamber news, a business directory, and other information about the community. The site touts Rome at the No. 1 Small City in the Southeast and provides a listing of available buildings and sites in an attempt to lure business to locate to the area. Type in www.romega.org and you’ll actually be re-directed to www.romega.us, the official Web site of the the city. This Web site also doubles of the official Web site of the Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau, so it would be a good place to start for someone new to the area looking for something to do. All one might need to know about the city government can be found here, including a link to the 2009 city budget, and water customers can now pay their bill online via the site. There is also a www.romegeorgia. com, which used to serve as the official Web site of the visitors center, but now provides general information about the city and the surrounding areas. From that site you can find a link to www.romefloydrecycles.org, the official site of the local recycling center. Visit that site to find out what is accepted, how to participate and about their offered programs. You can also navigate to www. romesymphony.org to learn about

the Rome Symphony Orchestra, or www.romearts.org to study the local art scene thanks to the Rome Area Council for the Arts. Swing over to www.romebraves.com to explore the local minor league baseball team. Or visit www.romelittletheatre.com when you’re in the mood to take in a play. All of those sites can be found via links on www.romega.org. There is a local astronomy club, and their Web site can be found at www.romesg.com (the sg stands for star gazers). There are plenty more, including at least three news Web sites with the word “Rome” in the domain name. There is also a popular discussion forum named www.romewired.com, which has more than 1,600 users and 84,000 topics, or threads.

Facebook.com

A look at the city of Rome and the Internet would not be complete without considering Facebook, a social networking Web site that has millions of users, quite a few with times to Rome. Type “Rome, Ga.” into the Facebook search engine and more than 500 profiles are available (it’s important to note they do not detail there number past 500. An Atlanta search also returned “over 500” profile). There are currently 132 groups for users to join, from high schoolspecific groups to company groups. RomeNewswire joined the site recently and added almost 450 friends within the first two weeks. But the most interesting of all groups is the one with 27 members

who think Rome smells like bacon after dark. “Rome, GA smells like bacon at night” was created by former Roman Warren Nichols. After moving to Atlanta, Nichols posted the following message to the group wall: “Just letting you folks know that Atlanta doesn’t smell so much like bacon. I've been living here for a few months now, and really enjoying it.” And then: “I went back to Rome a couple of weeks ago to visit my family, and it was hot. And yep, it smelled like fried bacon. Hint of bologna...” The group was the first Rome group created, back in August 2007, but the number of Roman users has ballooned since then, and there is much on Facebook to explore.

Rome Kares to prepare for disaster

Linda Fay Jones, 61, of 502 E. 20th St., died Feb. 12, 2009. Fred Talley’s Parkview Chapel Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.

By Daniel Bell The Newswire Editor danielbell@romenewswire.com

Gwendolyn Mae Gray, 61, of 460 Chubb Road, Lindale, died Feb. 8, 2009. Daniel’s Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.

Floyd County’s Emergency Management Agency director, Scotty Hancock, says that following disasters or emergency situations, there are certain tasks community volunteers can accomplish that official responders cannot. “There are certain limitations that government agencies have to deal with,” he told those attending a Rome Kares Inc. Community Organization Active In Disaster meeting recently. “That’s where organizations like this come in.” Ken McKenzie, president of Rome Kares Inc., illustrated the importance of a COAD group by comparing the way New Orleans responded to Hurricane Katrina to the way Atlanta dealt with the March 2008 tornado that struck downtown. “New Orleans didn’t have a volunteer response organization,” he said, explaining that residents and responders were not prepared for such an event. “New Orleans is slowly dying. I hate to break the news to you. New Orleans will never be the way we used to know it.” Atlanta, on the other hand, had a COAD in place. “The reason Atlanta recovered as quickly as it did is because Atlanta has a really good COAD,” McKenzie said. Those assembled for the meeting included representatives from various churches, civic groups, charity organizations, local governments, and members of the public at large. The point of the meeting, according to Floyd County 211 director Jim Bradshaw, is to develop “a skill inventory bank.” Those at the meeting were instructed to return to their organizations and find out what skills or services their group could provide in case of a disaster, whether it be removing trees from homes or simply tending to children while their parents attend to other matters. “We are not the first responders,” said McKenzie. “We are in this for the long term recovery.”

Hershall Lee Davis, 60, of 101 Moores Ferry Road, Calhoun, died Feb. 13, 2009. Henderson & Sons Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements. John Orion Wright IV, 21, of 5 Dell Place, died Feb. 12, 2009. Henderson & Sons Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements. Ruby M. Wilson, 92, of Horizon Bay Retirement Center, died Feb. 17, 2009. Daniel’s Funeral Home had charge of the arrangements.

Photo by Daniel Bell Ken McKenzie, president of Rome Kares, talks with a volunteer. He said members of the COAD may help prepare and distribute food, clean up damaged homes, or provide aid at shelters, among other things. To further illustrate the after-the-fact approach of a COAD, he had those at the meeting repeat a simple mantra. “Everyone repeat after me. I come from a long line of live cowards,” he said. McKenzie explained that the basic tasks of the group are planning, training and education, convening when a disaster occurs, and partnering with government agencies and first responders to fill a need. Hancock said a COAD could have been very helpful in March of 2008 following the tornado in Floyd and Polk counties. He said there were trees on homes, for example, that the government was not allowed to remove because they can’t remove trees from private property unless life is in danger. “That’s why organizations like this are so vital to the community,” Hancock said. Because disasters are thankfully rare, Rome Kares also has organized a Home Small Repairs Ministry to keep members trained and prepared and to continue to do good in the community. Volunteers make small, inexpensive repairs to residents’ homes without charge.

City Commissioner Buzz Wachsteter said the service is very valuable to the community because even though the city has federal money to provide the same service, the red tape that comes with the funds is time consuming and difficult to get through. Rome Kares could do 10 repairs in the time it might take the city to do one, he said. “It takes so much bureaucracy, and I’m a bureaucrat so I know, it takes so much bureaucracy that a group like this can do it a lot faster,” Wachsteter said. The next Rome Kares Inc. Community Organizations Active in Disaster meeting will be April 16 at 11:30 a.m. at the Floyd County Health Department. Lunch is provided and anyone interested in learning more is welcome to attend. McKenzie challenged the people at the meeting to return to their organizations and lead an effort to create a supply of “clean buckets,” buckets full of cleaning suppliers that could be readily used following storm, fire or other disaster. He said simple things can go a long way. For more information about Rome Kares and the programs they provide contact McKenzie by calling 706-235-8561 or by e-mail to kmckenziewpc@bellsouth.net.

NEWS FROM ROMENEWSWIRE.COM

Women learn gun safety during shooting classes By Dawn Treglown RomeNewswire.com Reporter The Rome Police Department hosted ladies’ night out recently, but the women didn’t come out for socializing. They were there to learn gun safety and shoot weapons. At the department’s Training Center on Callier Springs Road, twenty local women participated in a four-week gun safety class. Officer John Walters is the primary coordinator for the classes, and Sgt. Jon Black is a training supervisor for the group. Lt. Paul Greene also assisted with the class, because Walters had a scheduling conflict and could not be there. “We like to have at least two instructors here, so one can be giving commands while the other is running the controls, Sgt. Black said. The women learn gun safety rules and procedures and also get to practice shooting at the indoor firing range. “They teach you a lot here, said Roman Anita Seckinger. “We learned how to clean a gun and take care of it. We learned how to store the gun and about home safety. Other topics covered during the classes included gun laws and ammunition choices. Seckinger, who is 40 years old single mother, said she took the class to prevent being afraid at times. “I was tired of being scared and tired of thinking ‘what it,’ she said. Thelma House, a 56-year-old mother from Silver Creek, said she wanted to learn the laws concerning the carrying

of guns. She said that after a few weeks of class, she bought each of her two adult children a gun. Carolyn Keith of Rome said she learned a lot about the safety of guns in the home. “I’ve never shot a gun before these classes, and I’m hitting the target, said Roman Christy Cox. The classes were three hours long, one day per week, for four weeks at a cost of only $20. All the women agreed that the police officers were all nice and informative and not at all intimidating. Rome City Police Chief Hubert Smith said, “I’m just so proud that the Rome Police Department can teach these classes. We always want to do all we can to help the citizens here. Sgt. Black said the classes were geared toward women because, traditionally, women are more likely than men to be victims of assault. He added that the class fee is only to cover ammunition costs, and it only covers a fraction of it. The police department has scheduled another gun safety course for women in July, but that one is already filled up. Chief Smith said he is unsure if more classes will be offered this year. The training center also has to be used for mandated state and departmental police officer training. “The Rome Police Department’s training requirements even exceed the state’s, Sgt. Black said. “I am happy to say that I am comfortable with a gun now, Seckinger said. “I won’t be as afraid anymore, and that’s very important.

Political analyst tells Rotary Club race for governor to be crowded By Daniel Bell The Newswire Editor danielbell@romenewswire.com If Bill Crane is correct, then former Georgia Gov. Roy Barnes just might take another run at the post in 2010. “The field you’re looking at today is going to broaden, Crane, political analyst for 11 Alive News and CNN International, told members of the Rome Rotary Club recently during their lunch meeting. He said Barnes, if he does put his hat in the ring, will probably be the eventual Democratic nominee for governor and that his candidacy would make it a tight race, which could bring in money from the national parties, much like the recent state Senate runoff election that was won by Saxby Chambliss. Though he didn’t say who he thought the Republican nominee would be, Crane did say he expected as many as 10 candidates to enter the race, including Lieutenant Gov. Casey Cagle and Secretary of State Karen Handle. He also said he feels like current Gov. Sonny Perdue may put his considerable

support behind Handle. When asked about his thoughts on Speaker of the House Glenn Richardson’s future in the state government Crane paused before telling a story that highlights why he says he’s not a big Richardson fan. Crane said he was at an event with about 100 other people – including politicians from both parties, lobbyists, and journalists — when Richardson arrived with a just-elected, first-time Republican representative. The new representative had more than $12,000 in campaign debt. Crane said Richardson, in front of the assembled crowd, put his arm around the representative and told everyone about the campaign debt while pointing at lobbyists. Richardson told the lobbyists that if they didn’t help erase the debt they shouldn’t bring him a bill until day 39 of the legislative session. “He didn’t have the debt when he left that night,â€? said Crane, who added that government should not work like that. “If Richardson wants to be a state leader, not just now but for decades to come ‌ he needs to stop acting like a frat boy and more like a leader.â€?

RomeNewswire launches new social networking site Romans, as well as other residents of the area, can now network on the net thanks to the creation of RomeNewswire’s new social networking Web site. The site, myRNW. com, allows users to post photos, videos, audio clips, blogs, and much more. More than 100 people joined the network within the first week of the site going live, and the membership numbers continue to grow daily. “We pride ourselves on community involvement in our news company,” said Jerry Duke, publisher of RomeNewswire. “This site gives our readers another way to get involved and get connected. People have been responding really well to the new site.” Similar to other networking sites, users create their very own profile page where they share their content with other users. Members can create and join groups, chat, and provide news tips for RomeNewswire. What sets the site apart from others is the focus on Rome and the surrounding area.

“A lot of people don’t use MySpace or Facebook, but they still want to connect with other people in the area,” said Duke. “This site gives our readers that chance. The content is user-created, so it’s focused at the local market.” The site uses a clean and easy-to-use format so those not familiar with social sites should easily be able to create a profile and begin posting content instantly. To help promote the site when it was first launched, myRNW.com hosted a photo contest, and members responded, submitting hundreds of photos within just a few days. RomeNewswire plans to use the site for contests and other promotional type events. For instance, when snow was in the forecast last month, users were asked to post their bad-weather photos to the Web site. And photos selected to be used on RomeNewswire. com won the user a free t-shirt. Anyone interested in joining myRNW.com should simply visit the site and click join.

Minivan Chronicles:

Man down: Call the family By Jessica Lindberg Special to The Newswire I believe I have shared stories of these grandparents before. These are the Church of God relations; the missionaries who held onto their faith like a tether line and roamed the world. They brought my father into the world in the hot, bright light of India. They moved sons from country to country, moved stones to lay foundations for modest churches in Peru, Haiti and the Dominican Republic. They felt the call to God, and to each other, over 75 years ago. Since then they have lived as two souls sharing one life. Last week, Grandpa fell. He hit his head. An ambulance rushed to the Renaissance Marquis, where the two of them have lived for a year, scooped him up and whisked him back to Floyd Medical Center. Things progressed from there as I am sure they do in most families; relatives called other relatives, retold news, shared all the current information and frustration at all the unanswerable questions. Schedules were rearranged, plans were made, and family members started to trickle into town. Since my cousin and I live here, our houses become anchor points for outof-town relations. We are lucky; we are here. When some crisis or tragedy befalls a family, the ones who cannot immediately set down their daily routines are tortured by that feeling of wanting to be in two places at once. They must carry out all their daily obligations with the constant, nagging distraction of separation and powerlessness. That type of separation makes one feel like a shell, a husk, unable to concentrate. I have felt that feeling before, too. I have been the one miles and miles away from the scene, trying to carry out my daily chores in a fog and catching myself just standing, staring into a sinkful of sudsy dishes for far too long. But this time, I live here. Grandpa fell in my city. I pulled out extra sheets and towels for whomever showed up to stay at my house. I sent e-mails to keep others informed: “the doctors say … the doctors think ... we don’t know yet if ...” The early hours of an incident

like this provide busy work. There are people to call and plans to make; new bits and pieces of information disseminate as test results return from the lab. Anyone familiar with medical events like this understands; the busy work is much better than the waiting. By Friday the waiting had begun. My father and his four brothers are quickwitted, steady, strong men, but they are not young. Since they did not need to spend multiple nights in the hospital watching over Grandpa, I volunteered to take a shift. Hospitals operate in a different time zone. In a room like Grandpa’s, where no one’s life is in imminent danger, where what we are all doing is really just waiting for him to wake up, time moves in fits and spurts. The time between nurses arriving for blood pressure checks can seem like moments, while the empty space between one breath he takes and the next can seem like an eternity. Hospital vigils are one of the few instances where just sitting, unproductive for hours, is not only acceptable, it is expected. Nursing shifts rotate, visitors roam the halls, the rectangle of sky visible from the window changes from gray to black to the washed-out yellow of dawn. Outside the door there is activity; inside the room there is only the labored breathing of an old man and the steady hum of his assorted machines. If you have spent the night sitting with someone in the hospital — hovering over them, squirming in the reclining chair and trying not to let your thoughts wander towards your own inevitable end — then you understand that feeling of walking out of the hospital doors in the morning. No mornings are so bright, so clean, so welcoming as that morning when you leave the stale, medical air of the hospital. This is another effect of hospital time; it feels like the rest of the world paused while you were in that room, and as soon as the sliding glass doors open to the parking lot, it is as if someone pushed a button to start it all going again. The dark night passes; life resumes. I hope Grandpa gets another chance to have that morning.

Don’t wait for a brick A young and successful executive was traveling down a neighborhood street, going a bit too fast in his new Jaguar. He was watching for kids darting out from between parked cars and slowed down when he thought he saw something. As his car passed, no children appeared. Instead, a brick smashed into the Jag’s side door! He slammed on the brakes and drove the Jag back to the spot where the brick had been thrown. The angry driver then jumped out of the car, grabbed the nearest kid and pushed him up against a parked car, shouting, “What was that all about and who are you? Just what the heck are you doing? That’s a new car and that brick you threw is going to cost a lot of money. Why did you do it?” The young boy was apologetic. “Please mister ... please, I'm sorry... I didn't know what else to do,” he pleaded. “I threw the brick because no one else would stop...” With tears dripping down his face and off his chin, the youth pointed to a spot just around a parked car. “It's my brother,” he said. “He rolled off the curb and fell out of his wheelchair and I can't lift him up.” Now sobbing, the boy asked the stunned executive, “Would you please help me get him back into his wheelchair? He's hurt and he's too heavy for me.” Moved beyond words, the driver tried to swallow the rapidly swelling lump in his throat. He hurriedly lifted the handicapped boy back into the wheelchair, then took out his fancy handkerchief and dabbed at the fresh scrapes and cuts. A quick look told him everything was going to be OK.

“Thank you and may God bless you,” the grateful child told the stranger. Too shook up for words, the man simply watched the little boy push his wheelchair-bound brother down the sidewalk toward their home. It was a long, slow walk back to the Jaguar. The damage was very noticeable, but the driver never bothered to repair the dented side door. He kept the dent there to remind him of this message: Don’t go through life so fast that someone has to throw a brick at you to get your attention! Are you waiting for the health brick as well? Waiting for the heart problem, the cancer diagnosis, the headaches or some other symptom before you decide your health is important enough to take care of. Or has the brick already been thrown and you are just ignoring it hoping the “dent” will just go away? Don’t wait any longer. Chiropractic releases 100 percent life within the body, thus allowing normal function, which results in health. Call today for your spine and nerve system exam. You’ll thank us for life! God whispers in your soul and speaks to your heart. Sometimes when you don't have time to listen, he has to throw a brick at you. It’s your choice: Listen to his “wee small voice” within ... or wait for the brick! Live with passion. Live clear. Drs. OPINION

Did you make a New Year’s resolution this year? How’s that going for you? If you made a resolution concerning diet and/or exercise, chances are it’s not going too well. I hope it is, and for a few of us, it will — for a while anyway. But the truth is that our diet, our choice of foods that we purchase and eat, as well as how much exercise we get is a lifestyle; it is a culture. It is our culture. It is literally who we are. These are not things we can change on a whim, or even at will. At least not without a lot of inner changing first. Healthy weight loss is a state of mind, an attitude, a way of thinking, a way of making choices, a lifestyle. To think otherwise is only fooling yourself and delaying your goal of obtaining your healthiest weight. It took at least several years, maybe more, to get where you are. There is no instant magic trick to getting back to where you were, or getting to where you want to be as quickly as you would like. There is no pill, no potion, no special diet foods, no specialized piece of exercise equipment, no special piece of clothing, no drink or herb that is going to get you there and keep you there. Keep you there — that’s the key word isn’t it? We can trick our bodies for a period of time. We can drink our meals or skip our meals; we can take expensive supplements; we can eat next to nothing and exercise like fools until we are burnt out, but it won’t last. It is not natural. It is not normal. A good example of how attempting to trick our bodies doesn’t work is the use of artificial sweeteners. We may be able to trick our taste buds, but controlled studies are showing that people that use artificial sweeteners actually gain more weight than those using sugar. How could this be since

artificial sweeteners have no calories? It is because our physiology knows the difference. Our body knows we did not give it the sugar it was demanding from us (sugar is an addiction and will feel like a demand). So it will continue to send hunger signals in an attempt to get its desire met, and though we may not eat any sugar, we will consume more calories by the end of the day than those using sugar to sweeten their drinks. We can go on crazy diets, or even not so crazy diets, that will fool our physiology in the short run, but will not lead us to our goals of achieving a healthier weight — and health — permanently. If we can embrace the healthy lifestyle wholeheartedly, all the angst will be gone from weight loss. Once we decide to love ourselves enough to take the very best care of our selves, we will develop healthy habits that will lead to joy. When we are in joy we naturally make healthier choices. The irony is that once we love and accept ourselves just the way we are we will be able to transform ourselves into an even better version of our current self. How do you do that? One good way to know that you are loving yourself is to look at how you treat yourself. Do you give yourself the rest and nourishment that you deserve and need? Do you allow your mind to rest on a regular basis from the day to day cares that engulf us all? If you do not, cultivate the habit. Find 20 quiet minutes every day that you can give to yourself, take a load off, and allow your mind to wander. Allow your muscles to release and let go. Meditate, pray, or just be quiet. I admonished you in last month’s column to sleep more, rest more, and take naps. Stop pushing yourself so extremely hard. You will get more done in a rested frame of mind and you will

By Janice Holley Houck

Allow your muscles to release and let go. Meditate, pray or just be quite.

enjoy it more. Turns out this is a good prescription for healthy weight loss. Isn’t that wonderfully ironic? As we seek joy and peace in our lives, the choices we make lead to a healthier weight. Turns out getting too little sleep increases your appetite by rasing ghrelin levels. Ghrelin is a hormone that is made in the stomach that pushes you to eat more. Too little sleep also increases your appetite by lowering leptin which is a hormone released by fat cells that signals the brain to stop eating. So not getting enough sleep means you will be getting internal messages to eat more and the chemical messenger (hormone) that usually signals you to stop is in short supply. There’s more to this cycle, and the news gets worse and worse as far as the connection between too little sleep and weight gain. But this is enough for you to get the picture. The simple act of loving ourselves enough to allow ourselves to rest will be one step leading to the lifestyle I mentioned above — the lifestyle joyfully embracing healthy chocies. Here’s to happy, healthy living! Janice Holley Houck, M.A., RD/ LD, psychologist, nutritionist, life coach, organic farmer and owner of Loving Hearts Pharm & Wellness Center, can be reached at 706-234-2862 or by e-mail to Janice@lovingheartswellness.com.

John Moon: Ask the handyman Dear John: One of my toilets seems to run water almost all of the time. I’ve been just shutting the valve at the bottom on and off each time I use it. Is there something I can check or repair myself? C.M. Dear C.M.: Since I don’t know your capabilities or the tools you have, I’ll just explain it this way and let you make the decision. Toilets usually run for one of two reasons. Either the filler valve is not shutting off, or the flapper valve that creates the flush is not sealing. You can determine which it is by removing the top and looking inside the tank. Near the center, and sticking up in the tank is an “overflow” pipe. If the water is running over the top of that into the bowl, then the filler valve is not shutting off. If the water is not running over the top of that pipe but is running into the bowl then it is the flapper valve not sealing. Sometimes flapper valves will leak because of sediment building up on the sealing surface.

M oo n

The Health Nut(ritionist)

John Moon

If that is the case, you might be able to cure the problem by lifting up the flapper valve and cleaning the sealing face of it. More often than not though, they leak because the rubber has hardened over time and they just need to be replaced. Replacing them can be as easy as snapping off the old one and snapping on a new one, or if the toilet is real old replacing the flapper valve might require complete removal of the tank and replacing the center assembly, which includes the flapper valve and the overflow tube. If you determine it’s the filler valve, lift up on it to see if it then shuts off. If it does you might be able to adjust it by lowering it’s height if it’s one of the newer styles, or bending the float arm down if it’s the old ballcock style. Regardless, if a filler valve did work OK but is now leaking it’s probably a good idea to replace it as it indicates a problem in the making. E-mail your questions to the hanyman at johnm@ RomeNewswire.com.
