JULYWASPARKSMAKE LIFEBETTERMONTH!

At the July 8 City Council meeting, Mayor Gerard Giudice proclaimed July as Parks Make Life Better Month in Rohnert Park. This proclamation reflects our City’s commitment to creating vibrant, welcoming spaces that bring people together, support well-being, and protect the environment.

The proclamation was presented to Stephanie Stephens, Executive Director of California Parks and Recreation, and Tiarra Warner, Rohnert Park’s Community Services Manager. Ms. Stephens shared an inspiring message: “We are here tonight to celebrate something we all know in our hearts—that parks truly do make life better.” She emphasized that parks and recreation services strengthen our community’s identity and create a sense of belonging values we’re proud to uphold here in Rohnert Park.

From trails and open spaces to playgrounds and recreation programs, our parks help residents of all ages stay active, connect with nature, and build lasting memories.

Rohnert Park was proud to host the 55th Franklin Westrek, a beloved annual gathering of Franklin automobile enthusiasts, from June 22–27, 2025. If you noticed a few extra beautiful vintage cars cruising through town last month yes, you really did see them!

The event brought together Franklin owners and admirers from across the country to enjoy five days of scenic touring, shared history, and good company Hosted by Bill and Jan Charpier, this year’s Westrek used Rohnert Park as home base for daily excursions through the stunning landscapes of Sonoma and Marin Counties.

Tour highlights included stops at historic sites like Point Reyes National Seashore, Sonoma State Historic Park, Fort Ross, and the Petaluma Adobe, with participants exploring local landmarks, natural beauty, and California heritage along the way.

Rohnert Park was honored to welcome the Westrek community and share our friendly spirit with such a dedicated and passionate group. Here’s to old cars, new friends, and a summer to remember!

SWEETPEAGIFT SHOPPEFEATUREDIN THEPRESSDEMOCRAT!

We’re excited to share that our beloved SweetPea Gift Shoppe was recently highlighted in the Press Democrat, shining a light on this hidden gem inside the Rohnert Park Senior Center.

For nearly four decades, SweetPea has been a vibrant hub for local creativity and community spirit. From beautifully hand-sewn baby clothes and sports-themed tote bags to unique jewelry, woodwork, and greeting cards, everything in the shop is crafted by talented artisans ages 50 to 98.

Even more remarkable, SweetPea is run entirely by volunteers who are passionate about supporting local makers and giving back. Proceeds benefit both the consigning artists and local charitable causes, making every purchase a gift that gives twice.

If you haven’t visited lately, you’ll be amazed by the eclectic selection of one-of-a-kind treasures—often priced far below what you’d find in traditional stores Whether you’re looking for a thoughtful gift or a little something for yourself, SweetPea is the perfect place to find it.

Come see why the Press Democrat called SweetPea the “best-kept secret” in Sonoma County! We’re open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside the Rohnert Park Senior Center.

SPRECKELS THEATRE COMPANY

ANNOUNCESA BOLDAND INVENTIVENEW 25/26SEASON

Spreckels Theatre Company is thrilled to announce its upcoming 2025–2026 season, a vibrant blend of bold new works, beloved classics, and familyfriendly favorites. This compelling lineup takes audiences on a journey filled with humor, heart, and human connection, featuring misbehaving parrots, fractured fairy tales, holiday miracles, hard-won rides and the marvelous world of Dr. Seuss.

The season opens with Featherbaby, a new play by David Templeton, running August 29–September 14, 2025.

This dark comedy invites audiences into the world of Featherbaby, a territorial, foul-mouthed Amazon parrot, whose life is upended when Angie, a crime-scene photographer with a twisted sense of humor, begins dating Mason, a competitive jigsaw puzzler. What begins as a turf war turns into something far more unexpected in this sharp, witty, and emotionally resonant play, directed by Skylar Evans.

Next, from September 26–October 12, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Into the Woods takes the stage. Fairy tales collide in this spellbinding musical journey where wishes come true—but at a price

Follow Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack, and a childless Baker and his Wife as they venture into the woods to chase their dreams, only to discover that happily ever after isn’t always what it seems. Filled with enchantment and spectacular music, this Tony Awardwinning masterpiece is a rich, layered exploration of choices, consequences, and interconnected lives, directed by Sheri Lee Miller.

For the holiday season, audiences can delight in the tradition of, not one but, two returning theatrical events. It’s a Wonderful Life: A Live Radio Play by Joe Landry runs November 21–December 14, offering a nostalgic retelling of It’s A Wonderful Life as a 1940s radio broadcast with live foley sound effects. This heartwarming production is a reminder of the impact one life can have on an entire community.

Jenny Hollingworth directs this festive gem Running in tandem for one weekend only, December 12–14, All Is Calm: The Christmas Truce of 1914 by Peter Rothstein recounts the extraordinary true story of World War I soldiers who laid down their arms on Christmas Eve. Featuring an all-male a cappella ensemble, this powerful production celebrates peace, humanity, and hope in the midst of war, directed by Sheri Lee Miller.

The soulful, country-rock musical Hands on a Hardbody kicks off the new year on the Spreckels mainstage, February 13th – March 1st, 2026. This quirky, highstakes musical, based on real events, follows ten Texans competing to keep one hand on a brand-new truck the last one standing wins. More than just a contest, this is a hilarious, heartfelt look at resilience, community and the dreams that drive us. With a moving score and unforgettable characters, Hands on a Hardbody is a ride you’ll want to take.

The season concludes with the beloved, family-friendly musical Seussical by Stephen Flaherty and Lynn Ahrens, running May 1–17, 2026. Join the Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, and all your favorite Dr. Seuss characters in this high-energy, heartfelt musical that brings these treasured stories to life! With toetapping songs, dazzling visuals, and a timeless story about friendship, courage, and believing in the impossible, this wholesome extravaganza is pure joy from start to finish, directed by Gene Abravaya

SCHOOL ISBACKIN SESSION!

TRAFFIC SAFETY SHOULD BE A PRIORITY FOR EVERYONE

As the school season begins, we would like to remind our community that traffic safety is everyone’s responsibility

Like a team sport, traffic safety asks every person traveling in our city, including those in a car, on a bike or scooter or on foot, to do their part. Paying attention to our surroundings and following the rules of the road ensures traffic safety

To increase safety in school zones and near bus drop off locations, we encourage drivers to pay special attention

Help us win big, by following the following rules of the road:

Follow the speed limit and slow down for pedestrians and bicycles

Slow down at intersections and resist the urge to race through yellow lights

Stop completely at stop signs and be attentive at crosswalks and unmarked corners before proceeding

Stay alert for bikes, children, and animals that might unexpectedly appear from behind cars and into the streets

Never pass on the wrong side of the road, or around vehicles stopped at crosswalks, as there may be people crossing that you can’t see

Never drive under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs

Do not text and drive or participate in activities that impair your driving ability

Always use turn signals to indicate where you are going

Be extra cautious when backing up and look for pedestrians, bikes, and animals

Use extra caution when driving in hard-to-see conditions, such as nighttime or bad weather

Make sure your headlights and windshield wipers are in working condition, and use them when appropriate

Yellow flashing lights on a bus tell us that it is getting ready to stop to load or unload children. You should slow down and be ready to stop your vehicle.

Red flashing lights and extended stop arms on a bus tell us the bus has stopped and children are getting on or off You must stop your car and wait until the red lights stop flashing, the extended stop-arm is withdrawn, and the bus begins moving before you can start driving again

Make sure you have a valid California Driver’s permit if you’re operating a scooter This means you must be at least 15.5 years old.

Thank you for practicing good driving habits!

Food For Thought: Nourishing Health and Hope in Sonoma County

Nestled in Forestville, California, at 6550 Railroad Avenue, Forestville, CA 95436, Food For Thought has been a beacon of compassion and support since its founding in 1988. This remarkable nonprofit provides life-sustaining groceries, meals, and heartfelt assistance, all free of charge, to individuals in Sonoma County grappling with serious medical conditions and nutrition insecurity Recently, the organization received a significant grant from the Rohnert Park Foundation,

specifically to bolster its “Food For Thought Comprehensive Nutrition Program” right here in Rohnert Park, CA

Food For Thought operates with a clear and compelling mission: to foster health and healing through food and compassion. Their vision is to create a Sonoma County where every person facing a medical need has access to the nutritious food essential for healing and thriving

Who They Serve and How They Reach Them

Food For Thought dedicates its services to Sonoma County residents dealing with serious medical conditions and nutrition insecurity. medical conditions and nutrition insecurity. This includes individuals navigating diagnoses such as cancer, HIV, heart disease, kidney disease, pulmonary disease, diabetes, and even pregnancy Clients are primarily referred by their healthcare providers, ensuring that those most in need receive the support.

Beyond individual referrals, Food For Thought extends its reach by providing "bags of love" easy-toprepare food to community partners who serve people facing HIV and housing insecurity across Sonoma County These partners then distribute the bags to those who can benefit most

Food For Thought’s impact is evident in its diverse range of programs, each tailored to specific needs:

HIV Nutrition Program: Offers medically tailored weekly groceries for individuals with an HIV diagnosis, provided for as long as needed

Welcome Home Program: Delivers three months of medically tailored groceries and/or meals to clients after an inpatient hospitalization.

Infectious Disease Program: Provides weekly medically tailored grocery deliveries.

Oncology Nutrition Program: Supplies medically tailored groceries or meals to clients undergoing cancer treatment and their households

Full Belly Program: Offers medically tailored groceries and meals for expecting clients and their households

Community Supports Program: Provides medically tailored groceries and meals for patients with Medi-Cal.

Bags of Love: Ready-to-eat meals distributed by organizations to their unhoused patients with HIV

Beyond these specialized programs, Food For Thought offers essential services:

Free Weekly Medically Tailored Groceries: Featuring fresh produce, healthy proteins, nutritional supplements, and vitamins

Medically Tailored Prepared Meals: Carefully prepared to meet each client’s individual dietary needs.

Custom Meals: Households choose groceries and meals based on medical needs, personal preferences, and cultural considerations

Community-Powered and Future Focused

Nutrition Counseling: Guidance from registered dietitians to help clients manage new or existing medical conditions

Custom Pick-Up Orders: Clients can "shop" in-person at their food bank, designed like a local grocery store, offering dignity and choice.

Home Delivery: For those unable to leave their homes due to illness or lack of transportation, customized doorstep delivery is provided.

·Food For Thought stands as a true grassroots community organization, built by and for the people of Sonoma County over 35 years ago Their primary funding sources are individuals, local businesses, and foundations dedicated to uplifting their mission Notably, Food For Thought dedicates an impressive 84% of its budget directly to programs, ensuring maximum impact from every dollar donated As a community-based nonprofit, Food For Thought is particularly concerned about potential cuts to health and nutrition funding (like SNAP, Medi-Cal, and housing support). Such cuts would inevitably create a greater demand for their services. Despite this challenge, their donors are stepping up in a major way to help them keep up with this additional demand

Get Involved: Support Your Neighbors in Need

Food For Thought’s very existence relies on the incredible energy of its dedicated volunteers and the financial support of generous sponsors and donors There are numerous ways community members can get involved:

Volunteer:

Drivers are urgently needed for home deliveries, as 75% of Food For Thought's current clients receive food delivery There are even routes available right here in Rohnert Park

Help at food drives hosted monthly on Saturdays at Oliver's Market, typically for 2-3 hour shifts

Work in person at the Forestville location to help package and prepare foods before they go out.

Individuals with specific professional skills can contribute at the board level, particularly for committees focused on fundraising, accounting, and board governance.

Donate: Financial contributions are vital to sustaining their programs

Advocate: Spread the word about their critical work

To learn more about how you can support Food For Thought’s mission and help your neighbors in need, visit fftfoodbank.org.

"My health was in jeopardy and I very much needed help. I couldn't go to the store. I couldn't help myself. I couldn't cook for myself I couldn't bring the food inside But after, with the help from Food For Thought, it was delivered... If it weren't Food For Thought and in-home service, there are so many times I would have died" - Donya, HIV Program Client

"Before Food For Thought, I was counting slices of bread, just hoping to make it to the end of the month without going hungry. After my heart surgery, my doctor put me on a very restricted diet. I’m so happy Food For Thought gives me lots of healthy choices and ones that I actually WANT to eat.” - Donna, Welcome Home Client
