DIRECTOR OF COMMUNITY SERVICES

The Hands That Build Community

If you’ve ever walked through one of our parks early in the morning, you might notice the quiet hum of leaf blowers, the smell of fresh-cut grass, and the steady rhythm of people at work.

Those early-morning crews are the first ones in, and they’re the reason our parks feel the way they do. But their work doesn’t stop at the park entrance.

When something breaks 30 minutes before a fitness class at the Community Center, a luncheon at the Senior Center, or a private rental at Burton Rec Center, they’re the ones we call. Our Parks and Facilities Maintenance team in Public Works is always there, usually behind the scenes, making sure our spaces are safe, comfortable, and ready for you to enjoy.

They are the unsung heroes who make it possible for our community to thrive. They fix what’s broken before most of us even know it happened, often juggling competing needs and urgent requests with quiet professionalism and pride.

And believe me, there are plenty of competing needs.

Parks and facilities are used by everyone, every day, for everything. Recreation programs, sports leagues, senior activities, private rentals, and public events, all that share the same spaces. And every one of those users values their activity deeply, as they should.

For a parent coaching soccer, the fields are the most important thing in the city that day. For a senior attending lunch at the Center, it’s the comfort of the chairs, the temperature of the room, or the availability of parking. For someone planning a wedding at the Community Center, it’s that the lights sparkle and the floors shine. For our Animal Shelter, it’s ensuring every kennel, HVAC unit, and drain functions perfectly to keep animals healthy and safe.

Every user group, from swimmers to pickleball players, brings passion and pride to their space. And our staff matches that passion behind the scenes, working tirelessly to balance all those expectations so everyone feels as valued as they value their activity.

That’s not always an easy task. There’s no “off-season” for maintenance. Grass grows, irrigation leaks, weather surprises, and equipment wears down. Add in public use, back-to-back events, and unpredictable demands, and the work becomes a continuous juggling act of priorities, logistics, and safety.

Our parks and facilities don’t just look like community, they build community. They set the tone for how we treat one another and how we feel about where we live. People take care of the places that feel cared for. And every time our teams trim, sweep, paint, repair, or replace something, they’re showing the public that this city takes pride in itself.

So the next time you walk through a park, attend a class, or visit one of our facilities, take a second to notice the space around you. The smooth path, the working lights, the trimmed hedges, the clean restrooms, those things didn’t happen by accident.

I don’t have the privilege of supervising that team, but I can tell you that I’m grateful for every single one of them. If you enjoy and participate in the activities in this Guide than you should be as well, because without our maintenance teams, they don’t exist.

Because here in Rohnert Park, the hands that maintain our parks, facilities, and shelters are the hands that build community.
