Rohnert Park is the first bay area city to implement reusable foodware at their Farmers Markets!

The new program is in collaboration with Sparkl Reusables and over the past two months, we've introduced this program and the response has been fantastic! Vendors are encouraged to use at least 50% Sparkl reusable dishware this summer

The best part? Participation is voluntary and deposit-based, so there’s no extra cost for customers or vendors. Just pay a small deposit of $2-$5 for a Sparkl reusable and get your full deposit back when you return it to the Sparkl booth.

Let's work together to reduce single-use waste and make our city a little greener!

A special thank you to Tacos Costa Sonoma, Sushi Shoubu, HolyChileMole, What a Chicken, and Yummy Meals who have been especially receptive and enthusiastic about promoting Sparkl’s reusables. Your commitment is helping us make a significant impact!

ROHNERTPARKFOUNDATION

Calling all non-profit organizations!

The Rohnert Park Foundation Board will meet following the regular City Council meeting on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, starting at 5:00 p.m. to discuss and consider the new Rohnert Park Small Grants Guidelines. If you are interested in learning more about the Small Grants Program, this will be the meeting for you!

At the previous Rohnert Park Foundation Board meeting, the Board adopted the 2024/25 Fiscal Year Budget; the $326,500 budget expenditures for Fiscal Year 2024/25 include $300,000 for the Small Grants Program and $26,500 for concessions for the Performing Arts Center, professional services, taxes, and fees.

What is the Small Grants Program?

The Small Grants Program, a function of the Rohnert Park Foundation, aims to focus resources on and provide funding to areas of need in the community of Rohnert Park, which enhance new partnerships with community members, nonprofits, foundations, public agencies, and similar entities and sustain or enhance the community. Historically, the Small Grants Program has funded over $300,000 of community projects throughout Rohnert Park over three cycles of funding.

Where Does the Money Come From?

Funding for the Small Grants Fund is generously provided by the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria You can find further details regarding the funding in the Second Amended and Restated Memorandum of Understanding by and between the City of Rohnert Park and the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria.

Who Can Apply for Funding?

Nonprofit organizations who intend to deliver a service or offer a project in Rohnert Park are eligible for funding. Eligible nonprofit organizations must qualify under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code We require all applicants to complete an “Eligibility Screening Form” to determine eligibility.

What Type of Projects are Eligible?

Projects supported by the Rohnert Park Small Grants fund should fall into one or more of the following categories:

Program support

Education

Community artwork

Community beautification projects

When Will the Grant Cycle Open?

We are anticipating September 2024 as the opening date for applicants to submit their applications

The application window will be open from September 2024 to November 2024. In August/September 2024, the Foundation staff will meet with interested applicants to discuss funding amounts; format of semiannual and final reports; how to access and use the online Small Grants Portal; and provide technical advice to would-be applicants as to the potential suitability of their projects.

Additionally, Foundation staff may also provide recommendations on approaches and modifications that may improve the likelihood that the Foundation Board would approve an application for a grant, however, applicants should be aware that notwithstanding staff comments and recommendations, all decisions regarding grant applications are at the discretion of the Foundation Board.

Whom Do I Contact if I Have Questions?

Foundation staff are in the process of preparing the Notice of Funding Availability for the Small Grant Program and will advertise via multiple communications channels. If you would like to receive updates directly to your inbox, contact Paul Carey at pcarey@rpcity.org or (707) 5856754.

LABATHLANDINGUPDATE

Labath Landing, Rohnert Park’s 60-unit interim housing program for people experiencing homelessness, opened its doors in October 2022

The construction of Labath Landing was made possible by funding from the State’s Homekey program Ongoing operations are funded by a combination of State, County and City dollars. Since it opened, Labath Landing has served 132 people. Of those who left the program, 49% have moved into permanent homes. This success rate exceeds the countywide average of 26% for similar shelter and interim housing programs.

Labath Landing serves the most vulnerable people experiencing homelessness. Many have physical and mental health disabilities This makes it challenging to help them access housing. Many have been unhoused for years. Due to the program’s unique design, people who have been unwilling to go into other shelter or interim housing programs are often excited to accept placement at Labath Landing. Most other shelters in Sonoma County offer shared dorm-style sleeping areas, which offer little privacy. Labath Landing, however, provides individual rooms with locking doors, on-site showers and laundry facilities, and a shared kitchen and common area

Additionally, the program allows participants to bring their pets (one per person) – something many other shelters cannot accommodate.

The City partners with HomeFirst, a nonprofit, to manage the day-to-day operations of the program. HomeFirst’s staff provide on-site supportive services to program participants including mental health counseling, job training, life skills classes, and support accessing benefits like Social Security and food stamps. Their goal is to help participants gain stability and move on to their own permanent homes. Each person’s challenges are unique, and HomeFirst staff work with participants to create an individualized housing plan designed to fit their needs.

One of the many people who have benefited from the Labath Landing program is Marla When Marla entered Labath Landing, she was at the end of her rope. The constant stress of surviving on the street negatively affected her mental health. The thought of planning for her future had become too overwhelming, so she focused on doing what she needed to get through the day. Upon moving into Labath Landing, she was relieved to be given her own room with a locking door. Having her own secure, private space allowed her to rest and heal, until she was ready to think about her future again She worked with her case manager to create a resume and get the documents she would need to apply for jobs.

Recently, she began a full-time job at a local hotel Once she saves up some money, she plans to work with her case manager to find her own room rental or studio.

Labath Landing is a small part of the county-wide system of services available to people experiencing homelessness. More interim housing and affordable housing units are needed to reduce homelessness in Sonoma County. In addition to the City’s investment in homeless service programs, which include homeless outreach, interim housing and permanent housing programs, the City will continue to partner in county-wide efforts aimed at reducing and ultimately ending homelessness
