Chair Chatter: Sally Thackray ahead of today’s game Good afternoon to everyone for this afternoons FA Women's National League Premier North League fixture against Sheffield FC Ladies . A warm welcome to all players, club officials and spectators who have made the journey from Sheffield for todays match. We continue our League action today, resuming the battle for our first league points of the season. We have known Sheffield FC for many years, and during their spell in the FA WSL have frequently played friendlies against them. They had an unfortunate start to the season, as like us, they lost a lot of players following their resignation from the WSL, and have had to undertake a major rebuilding exercise. We will be trying to build on the improvements seen in last weeks match, and I expect a competitive encounter today, with both Clubs striving for the valuable three points. After today we wish Sheffield well for the rest of the season. Planning for next season is already underway, there will be more announcements soon, but we already know we will need to fill several Committee roles next year. Watch this space!

Match Preview: Bradford City WFC vs Sheffield FC Ladies These two sides last faced each other back in September, with Sheffield running out 2-0 winners in a close-fought game. The home side started strongly, and took the lead after 12 minutes with a goal from former City player Ellie White. The Bantams’ young side held their own for long periods of the game, and Shirley Murphy went close on a couple of occasions. The game was settled not long after half-time though, with Megan Tinsley scoring a second for the home side on 48 minutes.

City looked to find a way back in but the Sheffield defence did their job and Bradford went home empty-handed. The Bradford team that kicks off today will very different to the one that started the previous game, with at least five players having left the club. Bradford City: Routledge, Jakeman, Wisher, Clark, Roberts, Murphy, Norde, Gill, Shuttleworth, Taylor, Pringle Subs: Khan, McNulty, Wright

Today’s opposition: Sheffield FC Ladies The Ladies First Team, now in its 16th season after forming in the summer of 2003, started life at the bottom of the women's football pyramid but experienced a remarkable rise, including six league titles in eight seasons. In 2015, the club became the first to earn promotion on merit to the FA Women's Super League having won the inaugural FA Women's Premier League Championship Play Off Final. Following the Club's decision to withdraw from the FA WSL due to the rapidly escalating

financial demands of playing in the top two tiers, an exodus of players and staff resulted leaving the club facing a huge rebuild. The process starts with the new look first team commencing the 2018/19 season in the Northern Division of the FA Women's National League. This season Sheffield find themselves in a real relegation scrap with Doncaster Rovers Belles, One point splits the two sides, with the Belles having played one game more.

View From The Dugout: With Steve Winterburn Firstly I’d like to welcome Sheffield FC Ladies to the Mitton Group Stadium this afternoon, two teams with great histories meeting at the wrong end of the table, we’re both looking to turn our fortunes around and get back to where we belong. My time back at Bradford City WFC has had a tough start, but I’m starting to see some real positives on and off the pitch. We’ve lost a few players, but it was fantastic to start with to new signings last weekend against Nottingham Forest.

I want to take the opportunity in this column to publicly praise the players who are attending training on a regular basis and are showing a great attitude and willingness to work hard through these tough times. Things are improving and things will get better!!

Cheers, Steve Steve is still available to sponsor. Get in touch at info@bradfordcitywomensfc.co.uk for further details

Feature: Claret & Amber Through and Through

Bradford City WFC is a diverse club with a wide range of players, from a North Yorkshire firefighter to a Burundi international. BCWFC is 100% amateur, meaning everyone who puts on the claret & amber shirt does so because they want to play for this great club. Our players also support a number of different professional sides, but at the heart of our club are a core who are Bradford through-and-through. Without a game last weekend we took some time to talk to Ellie Edwards, Ellen Kennedy, Jess Dunlop, Maisie Norde & Rhianna Wright about life as a City player, and a City supporter… First up we asked them what a Bantams 5-aside team would look like, based on players from their time watching City. Two names went straight to the top of the list – Richard O’Donnell and Rory McArdle. After that came a discussion about Darby, Caddis and Warnock. In the end Caddis made the cut.

12 | FAWNL | BRADFORD CITY VS SHEFFIELD FC LADIES

Apart from Rhianna Wright who suggested Lewis O’Brien, the clear choice for No.4 was history maker Gary Jones, and Maisie Norde summed up the choice for striker, she said “David Ball, 100%”. So the final line-up: O’Donnell, McArdle, Caddis, Jones, Ball. Next I asked the players what life is like as a Bradford City supporter… Maisie and Ellie immediately summed it up with one word, “unique”. “We never know what to expect”, said Maisie. The question of the most memorable game was much more straight-forward. Everyone named the same three matches – vs Northampton in the play-off final, Billy Knott vs Leeds, and the Capital One Cup Final. “It was devastating but also one of my best”, said Ellen Kennedy of the Swansea defeat. Rhianna added the Chelsea win too, she was one of the lucky ones who got to witness history.

We asked Maisie what it means to play for the club she supports, and she summed it up neatly with two words – pride and sentiment. The last question I left them with led to plenty of discussion – if the stands were named after former players/managers, who would it be. And who deserves a statue? There were a couple of personal choices – Rhianna (a graduate of One In A Million) went for Wayne Jacobs, and Ellie Edwards named her great grandfather, a true club legend in Bryan Edwards. There was a clear theme through all the others named, players who have given their all for the shirt in their time at Valley Parade. Stephen Darby, Stuart McCall, David Wetherall, Dean Windass and Gary Jones. Maisie felt Bobby Campbell, one of City’s all-time greatest goalscorers (121 goals in 274 appearances) was the most deserving of a statue.

Former Bradford City legend Bobby Campbell, who passed away in November 2016

Last time out: BCWFC vs Nottingham Forest City fell to another defeat on Sunday, but should’ve taken at least a point from a game that they dominated for periods. Visitors Nottingham Forest started strongly, attacking uphill on a boggy Eccleshill Utd pitch, and won a corner in the first minute. But City stood firm and Charlotte Sales cleared the danger. City enjoyed a great deal of possession early on, but were unable to create any clear chances. New signing Sophie Parrish kept Forest at bay with a last-ditch block from close range as the visitors looked to find an opening. Bradford went close not long after, Ellie Edwards picked up the ball outside the box and hit a looping shot that Forest keeper Thomas held onto. City continued to press, Norde and Rosie Gill combined well to create an opening for Jen Clark, whose shot was easily saved. Zoe Roberts was next to test Thomas, with a thundering trademark effort from long range that had the Forest stopper scrambling to clear from under her own bar. Not long after that City manager Steve Winterburn was forced to make his first change of the afternoon as Clark limped off to be replaced by Falone Sumaili. The rest of the half was fairly uneventful and the teams went in level at half time.

City started the brighter after the break, with 18 | FAWNL | BRADFORD CITY VS SHEFFIELD FC LADIES

Sumaili having two good opportunities the break the deadlock. First her longrange shot was smothered by Thomas, and then not long after she slipped when through on goal and the keeper gratefully held onto the ball. On the hour mark Roberts went into the book with a cynical challenge as Forest looked to catch Bradford on the break. City failed to properly clear their lines and Ashleigh Edwards coolly chipped the ball over the stranded Aimee Routledge in the Bradford goal. On 72 minutes, Sophie Parrish brought down Hickingbottom on the edge of the box, and after a consultation with the assistant, referee Charlotte Phillips changed her decision from free-kick to penalty, much to the consternation of the City players. Routledge came up with more heroics, diving full length to tip the ball round the post to keep the score at 1-0 and give Bradford an injection of self-belief as they tired on the heavy pitch. But four minutes later Edwards made up for her poor spot kick as she broke free from the City back line to finish calmly under the City keeper. Winterburn made a final throw of the dice, bringing on Kate Donnan and Paris Durrant to replace Sales and Gill, but it wasn’t enough and the game ended 2-0 to the visitors.
