Chair Chatter: Sally Thackray ahead of today’s game Good afternoon to everyone for this afternoons FA Women's National League Premier North League fixture against Doncaster Belles. A warm welcome to all players, club officials and spectators who have made the journey from Doncaster for today’s match. We continue our League action today, resuming the battle for our first league points of the season. Aside from the away match earlier this season, we last played Doncaster Belles in an FA Cup match some years ago, narrowly losing 1-0 , when Sue Smith was still playing for Belles. Belles have had a difficult season , as like us, they lost a lot of players following their resignation from the WSL, and have had to undertake a major rebuilding exercise. We will be trying to build on the improvements seen in our recent matches, and I expect a competitive encounter today, with both clubs striving for the valuable three points. Elsewhere we are working with Bradford City men’s team, to be involved in their Kick it Out/Inclusion activities, hoping to have a strong presence at Valley Parade at their home game on 22nd April. Also Amnesty International are hoping to involve us in a couple of initiatives for Amnesty International weekend ( 28th April). Get behind the girls today, they need your support. Enjoy the game!

Sally

Match Preview: BCWFC vs Doncaster Rovers Belles Bradford and Doncaster have both had difficult seasons, and find themselves bottom and second-bottom respectively. Doncaster have at least enjoyed three wins this season, including a 2-0 victory over relegation rivals Sheffield FC, and a 5-1 victory at home to Bradford back in November. When these two sides last met, Belles dominated and took the points thanks to goals from Chloe Bethell, Emily Brett, Isabelle Whittle, and a brace from Abby Watkinson.

Charlotte Sales in action when these two teams last met

In a season of real turmoil for Bradford, only five of the 14 players that travelled to Rossington Main that day are still at the club.

City’s scorer on the day, Shirley Murphy, is one of the remaining nine to have left. Hannah Shuttleworth was in the Bradford side that day, and has since signed for Belles.

Today’s opposition: Doncaster Rovers Belles Doncaster Rovers Belles began life in 1969 as Belle Vue Belles, and after two years of playing smallsided local games they changed their name to Doncaster Belles. In 1983 the Belles lifted the Women’s FA Cup after a 3-2 win over St Helens. They then went on to lose in the final for three successive seasons before winning back the trophy in 1987, again beating St Helens. The Belles continued their hold on the cup, with wins over Leasowe Pacific and Friends of Fulham in 1988 & 1990.

FA Cup at the quarter final stage.

Up until 1991 Belles had been playing in the Notts League and North East League, winning 14 out of 15 titles in total. Then in the 1991/92 season they became founder members for the Nation League, winning with PAW Premier League undefeated, coupled with a 4-0 win over Red Star Southampton in the Women’s FA Cup.

The Belles came up against a rising Arsenal side, losing in both the league and cup to the Gunners. But in 93/94 they clinched the title back from the London side, finishing four points ahead of their new rivals. The South Yorkshire side then reclaimed the FA Cup with a 1-0 victory over Knowsley Utd. The club started the new millennium with a 2-1 loss to Croydon in the FA Cup final. They then finished second in the league for three successive seasons behind a dominant Arsenal side, although Doncaster enjoyed a 4-0 win over the champions, as well as knocking them out of the

2005 was a momentous season for the Belles, having formalised their partnership with Doncaster Rovers, and they now share the Keepmoat Stadium for home games. 2009 saw the formation of the FA Women’s Super League, and Doncaster were one of the eight teams in the new competition. But in 2013 Belles were replaced by Manchester City in the top tier of the WSL, and found themselves in WSL 2. They narrowly missed promotion back to the top division in 2014, finishing as runnersup to Sunderland. In 2015 Doncaster won 14 of 18 games to reclaim top spot in WSL 2, only to find themselves dropped back down to WSL 2 after a season impacted heavily by injuries and fixture disruption. In 2018 the Belles finally claimed the WSL 2 crown, winning the trophy with two games remaining in the season.

Tell us about your team... Bradford City U16's have players who play for both the U16's and U18's. The ages in the

squad range from 14 to 16 years. One of the younger players makes frequent appearances for the U18's and scored two goals on her debut. A couple of the players have also been invited to a training session with the first team and the girls who went enjoyed the experience. The girls reached the Semi final of the County Cup and after a thrilling 3-3 draw, coming back three times to lose 4-2 on penalties. For a team who don't have a proper goalkeeper, players frequently play out of position and low attendance at training, the girls always play with enjoyment and always come off with a positive attitude whatever the result is.

Coach’s Questions Favourite club? Liverpool Favourite player? Steven Gerrard

Favourite moment in football? Liverpool’s Champion’s League win, 2005 How long have you been at BCWFC? One season Highlight of the season so far? Seeing U18s players in the first team Biggest moaner in your team? Robyn Summarise your team in one word… Resilient

Tell us about your team... It has been a challenging season for this young U18s team for various reasons. However, no matter what has been thrown their way, they have pushed through it.

A prime example was during a difficult game against Nidd Utd where we had various challenges during the game but with 15 minutes left, the players rallied together in a huddle and fought for the win. The team are starting to relax on the ball, play some beautiful football, and show great team spirit. They have also been very welcoming as highlighted by the number of 16s that have played and enjoyed playing in the 18s team. Overall, the group have matured and developed as individuals and footballers over the season and it has been a pleasure to work with them.

Last time out: BCWFC vs Hull City LFC It was a tale of two halves as Bradford City WFC went down 3-1 away at Hull City LFC on Sunday. Coach Luke Norris again took charge looking for his side to carry all the positives from last Sunday’s battling performance at Derby into this game against seventh placed Hull. And he got his wish, after only 11 minutes Harriet Jakeman made an excellent run down the right and picked out Falone Sumaili who slotted home from close range. In extremely windy conditions at the University of Hull, Bradford battled hard in midfield. Norris brought in Ellen Kennedy for her first team debut to give the side more width and pace, and she proved effective on the left for City, making some excellent runs in behind the Hull defence. Sophie Parrish also came back into the team after missing the Derby defeat, and she formed a solid partnership with Zoe Roberts in the middle of defence.

The majority of the rest of the first half was uneventful, with most of the exchanges taking place in the middle of the field, Aimee Routledge in the Bradford goal enjoyed an unusually quiet 45 minutes as Bradford defended their lead resolutely. It was a different story in the second half. Hull came out fired up, and grabbed an equaliser on 50 minutes as Rebecca Beech was gifted a tap in from close range. Hull then went ahead on the 59th minute as Amy Kay pounced on a cross from Beech to finish from only a couple of yards out.

On 66 minutes Norris made his first change of the afternoon, bringing Paris Durrant on to replace the tired Kennedy. But four minutes later he was forced into a second unexpected substitution as Zoe Roberts was clattered by a late challenge and had to be carried off. Louise Willoughby came on to make her first senior appearance. Roberts left the stadium after the game on crutches, and Bradford will be waiting nervously for news of their experienced defender. The disruption and injury seemed to unsettle Bradford, who were visibly tiring in the swirling winds. On 79 minutes Routledge looked to have conceded a penalty as she brought down Knight when clean through on goal, but the referee waved away the Hull appeals. Then with only four minutes remaining Misty Russell thumped the ball goalward, and Routledge was helpless to stop the ball as it was caught by the wind and nestled in the corner to take the game away from Bradford. Bradford line-up: Routledge, Roberts (Willoughby, 70), Clark, Parrish, Edwards, Kennedy (Durrant, 66), Sales, Donnan, Norde (c), Jakeman, Sumaili
