**Article by Ruben Morales On the eve of the fourth of july, in Miami Springs, rain threatened to run away the show participants, however the fortitude of our celebration won. The wait was worth the enjoyment of a beautiful afternoon with families and friends reinforcing the traditional values that represent the classic american car in our culture. Everyone in their own way showed the civic spirit decorating each of their vehicles in a symbolic way. Kudos to our friend Bill Good for enduring the rain and giving us these great pictures. This is the largest show in Miami Springs with 365 participanting cars, it has been going for 17 years, the next coming event will be December 7/2013, by Jumplin Jack Productions. Âś

**Article by Michael Lepurage In 1992 Michael Lepurage (President of Florida Street Rods) needed a place to hang out with all his classic car friends. He thought there would be no better way then to start a cruise-in. It started with a small group of people and grew fast. Sid Morra (VP of Florida Street Rods) joined in to help and hosted the show together at The Tower Shops in Davie for several years. The show is held every Friday from 6pm to 10pm. Mike and Sid made the show a family friendly car show open to all makes and models in any condition. There is never any judging at the show, so its just about hanging out with good friends and having a relaxing night after the hard work week. We have Scott “The Music Man” as our DJ playing all your favorite tunes throughout the evening. There are vendors selling auto related items and nostalgic items as well. In 2005 Michael Lepurage passed away at the early age of 58. Since then we have had the show in his memory. His oldest son Michael has taken over position as president and continues to host the show his brother John. Sid remained V.P. and his son Paul has joined in and hosts the show as well. Florida Street Rods would like to thank all the people and classic car enthusiasts who have supported the show for the past 22 years, with the continued support we are happy to bring you the largest weekly cruise-in in South Florida. ¶

Headers Close & Personal South Florida is definitely a melting pot. We have the opportunity to talk to different contributors to the Classic Car Community. When did you know that you were a true enthusiast? When I was 14 my dad bought me a 1958 T Bird. It was a way to keep me off the streets and out of trouble. Since I was already working with mechanics in my local Chrysler dealer, I was able to take advantage and get them to help me with my car. I was hooked. What were your favorite cars at the time? I was always a Chevy guy but my T Bird changed my mind. I also learned to like the Lincoln continental Mark V, my dad would change cars every four years and as long as I can remember it would be a Lincoln. So looking back I guess I have nostalgic feelings for Ford. Out of all your cars you’ve had, which one would you like to have today? 1970 Buick GSX. My Daughter and I built this car together. I remember she would crawl under the car with me and get covered full of grease. When did you start doing car shows? In 1993, I became the president of the Muscle Car Classic Club, I started promoting car shows at a Checkers hamburger joint. Most clubs back them were hot rods or all original clubs. I had neither.

What does it take to do a car show? You have to have patience, discipline and organization. What make a car show a success? Car shows are family environment friendly. Good music, good food, and lots of cars. And very important location, location. You mentioned patience, discipline and organization. What do you mean? You have to keep the shows clean and true. If the show is for certain types of cars, you need to be able to follow the guidelines. You need to deal with the public and have them follow the rules. Can you tell us a “most memorable moment” you have of your car shows? In 1997 when doing Fuddruckers, Pat Riley came to the show in his Ford 1930’s Hot Rod. I let him park right in front of the DJ, he stayed for about three hours. He wanted to just hang out with the guys, no photographs or signatures that day. Currently Gerardo Perez promotes car shows in Dade County. You can find him at www.SouthDadeCarShow.com ¶

**Article by George Fernandez The Rat Rod, not your Traditional Hot Rod A Rat Rods is an over exaggerated and outrages hot rod style vehicle. The term “Rat Rod” is not exactly known where it came from. You may remember the old Rat Fink cartoons and stickers of the sixties. This was a rat looking creature with its mouth wide open driving a blown out hot rod. Could this been the start of the term? In a recent My Classic Car episode a Rat Rod was featured. The owner mentioned that after World War II, the soldiers returning home began building their own style of hot rods. The cars were rough and looked incomplete. At first they were known as jalopies and beaters. These cars were used to carry surf boards to the beach, go out on dates, or just go to work and back. These jalopies and beaters continued to be created and developed throughout the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. New ideas and innovations began to flourish. It was all up to the builder’s imagination. Some say, the Rat Rod was created by radical hot rodders. These guys used what ever parts were available. They mixed and matched parts from

different type of cars. In a way, the Rat Rod is a throw back to the early years of the Hot Rod. Limited only to the owners skills and abilities. These cars created a sub culture of followers. Remember the “Greasers” or the Fonz on the TV show Happy Days? How about Rebel without a Cause, staring Marlon Brando? That was then! Today, the Rat Rods are on a class of their own. They still are radical and fun to see. Certainly not your traditional Hot Rod. The Rat Rod builders take pride in what they create. Some of the cars are amazingly built. Yes, these are Rebel Hot Rods to say the least. So, how do you build a Rat Rod? Here are the rules: • Body: A late 1920s through 1950s coup or roadster will do. • You need a chassis: An old car or light truck chassis works well. • Paint: What paint! Primer or any matte or flat color works good or just a good clear coat over the raw metal. • Interior: Bomber seats, Mexican blankets upholstery, or what ever is comfortable and radical. • Power Plant: What ever works for you. Usually a ford flat head V8, small block chevy, a Straight 6, V6, or even a 4 banger is acceptable. What the heck! Put a diesel in!! And a loud exhaust please! • Suspension: Low and mean looking! • Shock Value: Skulls, spider webs. or hand out of the trunk. Other accessories are only limited by the owners imagination. Stay away from Chrome! Next time you go to the car show and come across one of these creations don’t look shock or confused. It was built like that on purpose! ¶

Nostalgia The Chevy Corvair

**Article by: George Fernandez Unsafe At Any Speed? Ralph Nader, the infamous consumer advocate has been long given the credit for the demise of the Corvair. But was he right? Was it unsafe? Or what was it? The Chevrolet Corvair was a very unconventional car at the time. It had a rear mounted, air cooled, flat six cylinder engine. It also had four wheel independent suspension. At the time only expensive European cars had independent suspension. Porche had a flat six cylinder rear mounted engine with independent suspension. Volkswagen had the Beetle. But, you could not compare the two. The Beetle was much smaller and under powered. The Corvair platform was very versatile. You could get one as a four door sedan, station wagon, two door coupe, convertible, a van or a pickup truck! Yes, the Corvan came as a family passenger van or a delivery van. The Ramp Side came as a pickup truck with a side gate. The Corvair was also the first American production car that you could order with a turbo charger! The transmission was either a three speed manual, four speed manual or the power glide automatic. It was also very comfortable and roomy inside. In the early 1960s, Ralph Nader wrote a book titled “Unsafe at Any Speed. In his book he talked about the safety issues in the Chevrolet Corvair. He noted the car had tendencies to roll over on sharp turns. This was due to the rear engine and rear swing axles used on the 1960 to 1963 Corvairs. The ones he was talking about in the book. By the time the book came out in 1964,

Nostalgia Chevrolet had already replaced the rear axle for the 1964 model year. Chevy used the Corvette rear axles, since that was the only independent suspension axle available which was in mass production at the time. But, the book “Unsafe At Any Speed” had started to question the safety of the cars. The consumer public began to stigmatize the little revolutionary vehicle as unsafe. The damage was done. Chevrolet gave it a face lift in 1965. Making the little car look sleek and sporty. The van and picup truck were dropped from production. But sales started to drop. Executives at GM had no choice but to start to face out the car. In 1969 the last Corvair rolled out the Chevrolet assembly plant. The Corvair was no more. In 1971, the government came out with their findings on the Corvair. They determined that the Chevrolet Corvair was just as safe as any car at the time ! Today Corvairs are very collectible. Jay Leno host of the Tonight Show, has one in his massive car collection. The 1969 models are the ones to look for. This is due to their limited production. These cars are still inexpensive and easy to find. There are many Corvair clubs, organizations and part suppliers throughout the United States. CORSA or the Corvair Society of America holds a yearly convention. Guess who was their guest speaker one year. You guessed it. Ralph Nader himself. So, was it Ralph Nader’s doing or were there o t h e r factors involved?

Remember, Chevrolet had the Camaro and Pontiac had the Firebird at the time. Those cars were competing against the Ford Mustang for sales. The Corvair could not compete against them. The Nova was in competition with the Ford Falcon. These were all conventional designs. The Corvair was unconventional with its rear mounted air cooled engine and independent suspension. Was it too far ahead of its time? ¶
