“Farewell Snow Birds” It is now the time of the year when many of our friends go back to their northerly homes. Rods and Classics USA first winter is just about over, although looking at the weather, it seems this year’s winter has been extensively long. Many accidents, and city shut downs across the country, while here in Florida, we enjoyed excellent weather. Now we get to slip into our shorts and T’s and await our overbearing heat. We were fortunate and pleased to meet many who reside up north and made the winter trek with their classic car to Florida. This is easily appreciated while walking through the car shows and observing all the out of state plates. We think it is great that we get so many car enthusiasts in our neighborhoods from all over the country. Indeed, they are an important spice to our plate. Thank you guys! THUNDERBIRD CLUB CAR SHOW January 26, 2014 we visited the 14th annual Thunderbird Club Open Car Show. Any car, any year, even motorcycles were welcomed. The event is back to Tropical Park. The last 3 years the show took place at Magic City Casino. Well over 200 cars participated. The fundraiser is held once a year to directly benefit the club. It helps cover cost of their annual summer picnic, holiday party and a couple of meetings that they hold during the year. Currently the club has 80 members and to become a member all you need to have is love for cars. It is a delight to see a row of the elegant 50s thunderbird out on the field. Participants eagerly wait for this event to park there thunderbird next to their siblings. If you are a fan of the elegant charm don’t miss out and make sure to flag it in next years calendar. The Festival Flea Market
The Festival Flea Market Car Show has become the largest car show in South Florida and second largest in the state to the world Famous Turkey Run show in Daytona. This show is a Candy Shop to the enthusiast, featuring over 600 cars of all types. It is a wonderful show where you get to admire rarely seen classics. Participants and show-goers enjoy music, food, and more than 500 shops inside the flea-market. This year over 20,000 people visited the show. This event is hosted by Russ Gagliano twice a year. February 1st, 2014 was a great day. Not only did we get to meet Dennis Gage at Hollywood’s Dream Car Classic Car Show, but we also had the opportunity to showcase The Green Gem. This is a 1964 Mercury Park Lane Marauder convertible. You do not see these cars easily anymore. Bob Wing is the proud owner of this car. He has owned this car for the last 7 years and does not plan to let it go anytime soon. The car is in great condition, very complete and original. Its color is silver turquoise. This Mercury has a 390 C.I. engine that cranks out 300 horse power. The Park Lane sticker price was $3549.50. Shocked, well wait. This price does not include the $14.60 extra for back up lights, the $43.20 for power brakes, nor the $4.30 for non-glare day/night RV mirror. And do not forget the very expensive floor mats priced at $12.30. These extras are just a few added to the final purchase price for this 1964 gem.

Meet Jean Lopane, a vibrant and enthusiastic car show promoter from West Palm Beach. She is also fondly known as ”Car Show Jean” by her many friends and followers. Jean is one of the few women car show promoters in what is mostly a male dominated hobby. That is what makes her such a unique person. Rods & Classics USA met with her during a recent interview. This is what she had to say:
Do you have any judging or award any trophies? There is no judging, no trophies, or dash plaques. This is strictly a fun event for family and friends.
Jean, our first question to you is, how did you get started in car shows? I have been attending car shows for the past 25 years. I have always had a passion for old classic cars. I started doing car shows about seven years ago. I began by helping an older couple, Joe and Pam. They had a small cruise-in at the Long Horns in Delray Beach at the time. When Joe’s health started failing, they asked me to take over the show.

How much time do you devote to the car shows? My husband and I have owned a Golf Shop in Boca Raton for the past 26 years. The shop has been doing well, so, I spend a good deal of time on car shows. I am constantly getting calls to put on car shows at different places. I will be doing this for as long as I feel it is my hobby. Do you own any old classic cars? I have owned three old classic cars at one time. My first car was a 1959 T-Bird. Then, I bought a 1957 Mercury Mont Claire and a 1955 Pontiac Star Chief. I sold the first two and kept the Star Chief. I have a passion for 50’s cars. Why 50’s cars? I love the color combinations of cars of that era. These cars are larger than life! I also like the large amount of chrome. I just think these are beautiful cars. What is the largest car show that you promote? At the present time, it would be the Abacoa Town Center Cruise-In in Jupiter. We get over 200 cars participating in that show. What makes the Abacoa Cruise-In so special? Abacoa is in a beautiful setting. There are several restaurants, shops, and activities for everyone. We have an amphitheater for stage shows and plenty of parking. We have live music. The car show is very family oriented. We welcome everyone. I try to make this show unique. There is always going to be some special entertainment. We even brought in a petting zoo for the kids and animal rescue pets. There is live entertainment. We bring in bands and dancers to all the shows. I am always thinking outside the box.

Do you do any other car show? Yes, I also do a Tuesday Night Cruise-In at Duffy’s in West Palm Beach.

Nostalgia The Chevy Tri Five The Tri-Five refers to the 1955, 1956, and 1957 Chevrolet Bel-Aire, 150, 210, and Nomad models. These three year, mid-fifties models, are considered the most beautiful Chevys ever built. To many this was the “Golden Age” for these cars. The Tri-Fives are very sought after for their styling and performance. Super Chevy Magazine says; “These are the most recognized American cars in history.” “To this day, when people think of classic American cars they think of the Tri-Five.” In 1955, Chevrolet introduced a new model line, also referred to as the “Shoe Box Chevys.” These cars came with the new 265 cubic inch V8 engine with 162 horse power. This engine offered better performance than the old six cylinder engine it replaced. The new model also had streamlined rear fenders, giving the car outstanding styling. The 1956 model only received a modest facelift. The 1957 model had the boldest facelift. Chevrolet spent millions of dollars to retool the plant. This year had a Cadillac like styling and offered a new 283 cubic inch fuel injected engine. These engines were known as the “fuellies”.

Different Trims for Different Folks •
Bel-Aire: The Bel-Aire was the top of the line model. This model is the most desirable by collectors. The 1955 and 1957 are in higher demand than the 1956. This is basically due to sales. 1956 was not a record year.
•
150: The 150 is the bottom of the line model. These “Plain Jane” models are still desirable with the right engine.
•
250: The 250 is the mid-range model. This model has a higher trim than the 150.
•
Nomad: The Nomad was a two door station wagon. To some it is considered the prettiest station wagon ever built. These cars have a high appeal to collectors for their low production. Total Production 1955: 8530, 1956: 8103, 1957: 6534.
Today, the Tri-Five remain very popular classic cars. The two door sedans, Nomads and convertibles bring the highest price. These cars look great when restored. Whether you are a purest, resto-modder, or hot rodder, they look fantastic either way. Support groups through various Tri-Five clubs and organizations are abundant. Parts are readily available through Classic Industries, Ecklers and other suppliers.
