Car Show Report

Mecum’s Muscle Cars Auction

Mecum Auctions brought the world’s largest collector car auction to the Osceola Heritage Park grounds in Kissimmee, Fla., on Jan. 1726 with 3,000 vehicles and 3,000 items of Road Art and memorabilia crossing the auction block throughout the 10 days of hard-hammering action. The immense lineup included everything from high-performance muscle cars to ‘50s era cars as well as vintage racers, European sports and exotics and of course an impressive and vast offering of Corvettes. From investment-grade collector cars to entry-level vehicles, the lineup included something for everyone. Vehicles ranged from several thousand to several million dollars and included marques ranging from the unique and obscure to the automotive industry giants. With significant Corvette sales over the years, the Kissimmee auction has become an epicenter for the buyers and sellers of America’s Favorite Sports Car and this year’s auction was filled with incredible investmentgrade offerings wearing the Corvette name.

Festival of Speed The Seventh Annual Festival of Speed was an extraordinary car show held at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Orlando. On display on the beautifully manicured lawn and gardens were Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Porsches, Jags, Rolls Royce and many, many more exotic and luxury cars. The diverse field also included vintage and contemporary vehicles, race boats and custom motorcycles. Certainly this was an amazing site to behold all set to the back drop of Grande Lake. Special guest at this grand event was famous race car driver Bobby Rahal. We also got to watch Dennis Gage, the host of “My Classic Car film, an episode of the TV program.

Ferrari, the Exotic Italian One of the best known exotic sports cars is the Ferrari. These cars are amazingly built to persicission. The engines are built to the tolerance of a Rolex watch. Every fender gap and every door gap is straight and true. The suspension is finely tuned to what you expect in any high end exotic sports car. The performance is like that of a U.S. Navy F-14 Tom Cat fighter jet. Simply out of this world! Enzo Ferrari’s love of racing helped him develop and become the founder of the Ferrari Motor Company. The first Ferrari rolled out the assembly plant in 1947. The 125 Sport had a 1.5 Liter V-12 engine. By 1950 Ferrari was entering cars in races through out Europe. In 1951 a Ferrari won the Monaco Grand Prix and the following two years Ferraris won the World Championship Grand Prix. Success was coming easily for the Ferrari Racing Teams. Throughout the years the Ferrari’s endured growing pains, scandals and successes. In the late 1960s Ford tried to buy the Ferrari Company. The deal fell through. By 1969 Enzo Ferrari sold 50% of the company to Fiat. Ferrari made over one hundred models in very low production numbers. These are some of the production numbers for a few Ferrari models throughout the years. Ferrari Production: 1948 166 Sport total: 3 1948-1950 166 Inter total: 37 1950-1951 195 Inter total: 26 1968-1969 Dino 206 GT total: 152 1968- 1969 365 GTS total: 20 1973-1980 Dino 308 GT 4 total: 387 1980-1982 Mondial 8 total: 703 1987-1992 F40 total: 1315 1984-1991 Testarossa total: 7177 2004-Now F 430 total: N/A

R&C USA magazine had a recent photo shoot of two these incredible automobiles. These Ferrari’s are the proud possession of Jose and Ruth Cuesta. Jose is a long time Ferrari afficionado. He appreciates the styling, performance and craftsmanship of these fine cars. These two Ferrari Red beauties are loaded with every factory option including: R&C USA magazine would like to extend its appreciation to Mr. Oscar Castro and Wings Over Miami Aviation Museum for making this photo shoot possible. Mr. Castro is president of the Antique Automobile Club of America (AACA) South Florida Region. He is also the coordinator for the Wings Over Miami Car Show.

This is a benefit car show held on Memorial Day Weekend. The event is a fundraiser for the Wings Over Miami Museum. We encourage our readers to visit the museum. On display you will see vintage aircrafts and other military displays. Wings Over Miami is open year round. The Wings Over Miami Aviation Museum is located at Tamiami Airport on SW 137 Ave. and 128 Street. Miami, Florida 33186.

Nostalgia

1964 Cobra Daytona Coupe

In 1961, when legendary American race car driver Carroll Shelby learned that British auto manufacturer AC Cars lost their source for the engines used in their two-seat roadster, he sat down and wrote them a letter. Shelby proposed that AC continue building their chassis for a Shelby sports car, to be powered by an American V8. Even though he had no idea what engine that might be, Shelby airmailed his letter, and AC quickly climbed on board. According to legend, the name “Cobra” came to Shelby in a dream; he just knew it was right. After discovering Ford’s new small block V-8, Shelby went to work, preparing to shoehorn it into the chassis as soon as he took delivery in February of 1962. Within eight hours, Shelby’s new Cobra was on the road, and looking to outpace a Corvette. This first Cobra made its sensational debut under the Ford banner at the New York Auto Show in April, and production slowly but surely got underway shortly thereafter.

Within the next month, Shelby opened a shop in Venice, California to produce the Cobra roadster, the fastest production car ever made at that time, capable of 0 - 60 mph in 3.9 seconds. The next couple of years were spent in a constant state of development, as Shelby strove to beat Ferrari on the racetrack. After Cobra won LeMans in June of 1964, Shelby revealed the 427 Cobra prototype in November. Powered by Ford’s infamous “side-oiler,” the standard production model attained a top speed of 163 mph with 485 bhp. This Cobra was so fast, that it is sometimes credited as the reason behind the implementation of national speed limits in the UK. The Cobra remains one of the most duplicated cars ever produced. Cobra kit cars are still very popular. If you can’t afford the real thing building your own Cobra is the next best thing.

“FIRST COBRA DAYTONA COPUE BUILT, FIRST TO RACE, LAST TO RACE”. “Only six of these iconic race cars were built. Their streamlined design, power, and reliability made them victors in major races, beating the venerable Ferrari GTO to win the 1964 and 1965 World Championship of Makes. At Bonneville, this car set numerous speed records.” THE SIMEONE FOUNDATION AUTOMOTIVE MUSEUM 6825 Norwitch Drive, Philadelphia, PA 19153 http://www.facebook.com/RodsAndClassicsUSA

Headers Up-close & Personal Customs and Classics at the Ft. Lauderdale Auto Show We met Russ Gagliano at the Ft. Lauderdale Auto Show, where you can see just about every new car to hit the dealerships this year. Everything from fuel efficient compacts to the gas guzzling SUVs and more. The Annual 2014 Ft. Lauderdale Auto Show was held March 20-23 at the Greater Ft. Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center. But what brings Rods & Classics USA to the Auto Show is the Customs and Classics section. In this area, there were no new cars but cars from yester years. The Customs and Classics section included Russ Gagliano’s beautifully restored 1957 Chevrolet BelAir Convertible and Michael Cohen’s amazing 1948 PlayBoy retractable hard top convertible. If you think this car sounds familiar you are correct. Rods & Classics did an article on this same car a few months ago. At the time, Michael was still working on restoring the old PlayBoy. There were also several other very nicely restored old classic cars and beautiful hot rods.

Responsible for organizing the Customs and Classics section, is no other than Russ Gagliano. Russ says he has been putting this section together for the past two years. His goal is to keep making it better each year striving some day to make it a ritzy glamorous yesteryear show. I’m only given a certain amount of space to work with in the Convention Center, says Russ. People of all ages are mesmerized when they reach this part of the convention center. Nothing competes with history. Russ Gagliano is no stranger to organizing classic car events. He has been involved in the car show business since 1971. Russ, like many car show promoters, started organizing car shows to help out a friend in need. Currently, he hosts South Florida’s largest show at the Festival Flea Market, second only to the Daytona Turkey Run. Russ is also the owner of Russ G Classic Shop. The shop specializes in pre 1975 old classic cars.
