Car Shows Report

e r a u q S y e l @Cau Goulds, Fla.

**Article by Charlie Hudson (+) When Frances Varela came from Honduras 42 years ago, she had no idea that she would someday help save a piece of South Florida history. The story began long before Varela was born; a tale rooted in agriculture and Henry Flagler’s railroad. Most pioneering farmers who settled south of Miami were glad when the Florida East Coast Railway brought sidings like the one that was operated by a railroad employee named Goulds.

This caboose is a reminder of Cauley Square’s railroad days.

In 1903, it was initially referred to as Gould’s Siding, then simply as Goulds. Whatever the name, the railroad provided a far more efficient means of shipping Redland’s produce for men like William Cauley, and having a siding close to your property was especially beneficial. In any large shipping operation, however, there are logistical needs and since Cauley owned ten acres alongside the railroad tracks, he set about building a two-story warehouse and office that was completed in what was known as the flat ...Continues on page 7

Alex brings Elegance to the Cauley Square Car Show. The 1929 Packard G45 Sport Fin powered by a straight 8, with electric start and a 6 volt system. This car looks like a page out the Concourse de Elegance Program. Designed in the flamboyant times of top hats and chauffeurs. The custom built Packard was a toy for the rich. It is a rarity to see one of these vehicles at any show. Thank you Alex for sharing a historical passage in automobile history.

iron style blended with a touch of Spanish architecture. There were stories of booze, brawls, and a bordello in between a tornado in 1919 and the great 1926 Miami Hurricane. Despite rebuilding from weather-related destruction, economic realities eventually took a toll with the Great Depression, World War II, and population expansion pushing out agriculture. Cauley Square began a steady decline until Miami-Dade County finally condemned the aging collection of buildings and slated them for demolition. Enter Mary Anne Ballard, a Floridian who had moved to Redland with her husband in 1949, established her own Interior Design business, and possessed a love of history and art. She was active in numerous conservation efforts and saw the faded beauty in the two-story building that had been the focal point of Cauley Square. The Ballards purchased it, the land, and a few houses, and at age 65, what was to be Ballard’s retirement became instead a plan to restore Cauley Square. œ

The Sir Pizza show kicked off on the heels of the closing of Betty’s Burgers, formally known as Fuddruckers. Enthusiasts of all ages and their families would pack the parking lot every first Saturday of the month with oldies tunes, hamburgers on the grill and one of the best shakes in the planet. At the time, this was the hang out. Today Sir Pizza is the place to go to see hundreds of cars and families enjoy music, soda and pies.

Homestead, Fla.

**Article by Oscar Castro

The roots of the Homestead Main Street Benefit Car Show date back to the early 70’s when the first car show was held at Harris Field. Since then it has traveled between Harris Field and Krome Avenue, where the latest one was held on April 13th, 2013. The show, now named after the Homestead Main Street association, takes place each year, around the second week of April. This year’s show had 95 registered vehicles. Homestead Main Street is dedicated to the historic preservation and economic revitalization of the Downtown District. Its purpose is to promote the nationally designated Downtown Historic District as a center of Commerce, Culture and Community. ¶ For further information: www.benefitcarshows.com/HomesteadMainStreet.htm

“The 2014 Corvette Stingray is the most powerful standard model ever, with an estimated 450 horsepower (335 kW) and 450 lb.-ft. of torque (610 Nm). It is also the most capable standard model ever, able to accelerate from 0-60 in less than four seconds and achieve more than 1g in cornering grip. It is expected to be the most fuel-efficient Corvette, exceeding the EPA-estimated 26 mpg of the current model. “ GM

STINGRAY CONVERTIBLE

ThunderBird

**Article by: Art Fernandez The Corvette was born in 1953, 300 convertible units made. It was available in only one color combination, polo white with red interior. A 150 HP 6 cylinder blue flame engine was the only power plant available at the time. This was the beginning of the C-1 generation Corvette. Its production years were from 1953 to 1962. The Stingray, the icon of Corvettes, was introduced in 1963 completely redesigned. The car was available in a split window coupe and a convertible configuration with a V-8 fuel injected motor and independent rear suspension. Two factors inspired the new look. First, was the jaguar E-Type model and more significantly, an actual mako shark

Its production Courtesy of GM™ lasted form 1963 to 1967. The shortest production run of Corvette ever, making it the most admired and sought after Corvette of all. The name Stingray saw its last fender in 1976. Window treatments and chrome bumpers came and went. The bottle shape design continued until 1982, virtually unchanged, making the C-3 the longest running generation Corvette. The new Stingray is about to debut in 2014, sporting a completely new design from bumper to bumper and top to bottom, with state of the art technology applied in every shape and form. From touch screen dashes, to a 7 speed manual transmission and an interior that reminds you of the next interstellar travel vehicle; this is a car made for the future. The power plant is a 6.2L, LT1 V-8 engine that delivers 450 Hp and 450 Lb. of torque, achieving 0 to 60 Courtesy of GM™ mph in less than 4 seconds. The new Stingray zips through corners at over 1G-force, making this vehicle compete with its counter part super cars. This Stingray has the look of an exotic European machine, while at the same time its screams American muscle car. Nostalgia The Hugger Camaro

**Article by: Art Fernandez The Idea for the HUGGER Camaros was conceived by Tom Neal in the spring of 1979 as a means of his racing effort in the 24 hour Pepsi Challenge of Daytona. The cars were to be moulded after the # 28 race car instead of the pace car used to start the race. The race car number itself was selected in order to publicly show the new engineered 1980 Z28 Camaro. The new campaign for the Camaro Z28 was The Hugger. Neal believed consistent performance needed for an endurance race could be obtained by slightly modifying a Z28 Camaro so the car could be returned to its original condition after the race. ...Continues on page 23

Nostalgia

Funding for the race car and its entry into the 1980 IMSA (International Motor Sport Association) 24 hour Pepsi Challenge Race came from Jacksonville Zone Chevrolet dealers who were going to participate in a dealer drive-away program. This is why the 90 cars were only available in Florida. All build sheets’ destination of delivery read “Daytona Speedway.” Also, all build sheets read “Decal delete,” meaning all 90 Camaros were delivered without decals. Bill Mitchell, a well known specialist in Camaro modifications, entered the picture when Neal’s racing enthusiast, Bill Warren, recommended that Mitchell’s company, SVD (Special Vehicle Developments), take on the modifications for the 90 Huggers.

The Huggers were equipped with Minilite wheels from England, Koni shock absorbers, SVD rear stabilizer bar, a spoiler with fog lights, Racemark steering wheel, windshield clips, rear window strips, hood pins, and Steelmax 205/70 HR 14 tires. The 90 Camaros were supposed to be painted red-orange. The cars were delivered in December of 1979 to Special Vehicle Developments US 92 Daytona Beach Florida (Daytona International Speedway), where Bill Mitchell and his team completed the assembly. A distinctive striping was exclusively developed for these vehicles. On the day of the race, all Huggers made a parade lap and local Florida dealers picked up the cars to sell to the public. This was a one time deal where 90 cars were replicas of the actual race car used in the IMSA race and not replicas of the frequently used pace car. Sending this Camaro, unknown too many, in its own automotive history. These cars also had a $3000 to $4000 premium for all its modifications, making this car the most expensive Z20 Camaro back in 1980. Out of the 90 cars, there is only a handful left. ¶
