In 2023, we celebrated HEROES, and the courage of people moved by conviction, truth and love to improve communities, society and our world.
Some heroes brandish pencils, brushes or musical instruments as tools. Others enact change through ideas and collaboration. Many of the stories we rally around today are legacies that were never intended as heroic actions. As our world changes, these indelible fingerprints resonate in different ways. The effect of heroes is subtle and monumental, local and global and lingers long after they are gone. As we rolled out exhibitions and programming in 2023, we asked patrons to consider where they want their fingerprints to be seen.
FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
In our complex world, heroes sometimes seem to be in scarce supply. But in reality, they are around us all. Often, their impact goes unrecognized or uncredited, but we know there are always people in our midst working for good to improve our communities or make the world more peaceful.
In 2023, The Rockwell considered heroes in their myriad forms, including how artist Devan Shimoyama’s installation Untitled (for Tamir) kept us connected to unimaginable events like the killing of Tamir Rice in 2014 and inspired us to work for justice and equality in our systems and communities. I hope it impacted how everyone who experienced it considers racism and bias in our communities.
But as we reflect on the year, most of the avenues through which we approached heroes and heroism were personal in nature. In the exhibition by Robert Shetterly, curated by our Board of Trustees, we connected the people and activism personally important to them directly to the work of our organization. Our community and visitors genuinely enjoyed reading about the Trustees’ choices and perspectives as evidenced by the time people lingered in the gallery and the responses they gave in our visitor survey.
It was also thrilling to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Miss Clara S. Peck’s transformative gift of art and funds to The Rockwell Museum. Since 1983, we have acquired more than 600 works of art for our collection and community from the proceeds of her financial donation. I hope everyone now has a better understanding of why her name is credited on works of art throughout the galleries of the museum! Likewise, I hope the exhibition illustrated the stewardship and dedication of our leadership and team over the past four decades.
In 2023, The Rockwell also completed its 15th mural with the High School Learning Center as part of the Alley Art Project. The mural celebrates Salem Estrada, a young hero in our community who was chosen by his peers to represent the next generation of heroes. The team at the Marconi Lodge showed unwavering support for this project, took incredible ownership of the mural on their building and showed all of us what true heroism, belonging and community spirit mean.
It is impossible to highlight all the amazing work accomplished by the team at The Rockwell Museum with the wonderful support of our Board of Trustees, volunteers, members and community. Take a few minutes to peruse this report and reflect not just on the heroes included in these pages but also find inspiration to begin—or continue!—to make a positive difference in the lives of the people around you.

COLLECTIONS + EXHIBITIONS
Our year-long celebration of “Heroes” explored exhibitions across time periods and subjects, from Devan Shimoyama’s Untitled (For Tamir) installation in the spring, to the wonderful pairing of the works of William H. Johnson and Robert Shetterly celebrating historical and contemporary heroes. The Rockwell Museum also recognized their heroes this year. We reached out to board members, asking them to create labels to accompany Americans Who Tell the Truth , providing a fresh perspective on people who have made an impact in our world.
Donor Clara S. Peck, whose 1983 gift continues to enrich our museum, earned an exhibition dedicated to her remarkable collection and its growth.
Amanda Lett | Curator of Collections and Exhibitions
Fighters for Freedom: William H. Johnson Picturing Justice
We successfully hosted nine exhibitions in 2023, including our first Augmented Reality (AR) exhibition in Fallbrook Park. These exhibitions explored the multiple meanings of the word “hero” through those we celebrate, those we have lost and those that have the power to change the way we see the world.
The Rockwell acquired 40 works through gifts and purchases in 2023. From a mixed-media work by celebrated artist Alison Saar, to prints and artworks selected by our Rockwell Ambassadors and Silver Dollar Society members, the museum has been able to add diverse and compelling pieces to our permanent collection.
This has been a year of change for the Curatorial department! We said goodbye to a few familiar faces—Kirsty Buchanan, Xan Ruggiero and Tim Decker—and hello to Amanda Lett and Emily Smith.
We upgraded our collections database to TMS Collection, the newest iteration of Gallery Systems software and are making updates that will create a more robust catalogue for internal and external use.
Tim Decker retired in October 2023 after 40 years in the museum field.

EDUCATION + OUTREACH
2023 was an exciting year of reimagining programming and celebrating milestones with jumps in attendance in our school tour, outreach and family programming.
We partnered with Latinx artists and community organizations, including CareFirstNY and GLOW Traditions for our annual Día de los Muertos/ Day of the Dead Family Day. This event is connected to our school tour programs that serve thousands of students in 3rd grade and middle school. In addition, we featured artist Yen Ospina for a children’s exhibition, We Are Made of Star Stuff, at KIDS ROCKWELL Art Lab.
Over the summer our youth programming and art projects connected with the Fighters for Freedom: William H. Johnson Picturing Justice exhibition. Johnson probed African American history and told each Fighter’s story with his paintings.

Our Heroes Lecture Series included Smithsonian professionals and diverse local presenters. Entertainment Curator at the National Museum of American History, Ryan Lintelman, delivered a presentation on the recently installed Entertainment Nation exhibition, pulling out representations of heroes throughout the history of American entertainment. Talima Aaron, Board President of the John W. Jones Museum presented about the life and legacy of John W. Jones who escaped enslavement, found prosperity as the sexton of historic Woodlawn Cemetery and assisted 800 fugitives in successfully reaching Canada.
A committed group of 22 volunteers served 878 hours for the Museum, engaging 6,091 students visiting with school tours and 3,247 students through education programs. Volunteers helped with outreach initiatives, led adult tours and assisted with community events.
The Alley Art Project, a mural program in collaboration with the High School Learning Center of the Corning Painted Post School District and SUNY Corning Community College, celebrated its 15th anniversary with Emergence, a mural celebrating youth heroes in our community.

Our Summer Youth Group program welcomed regional youth groups to the Museum for tours and hands-on art workshops inspired by William H. Johnson’s and Robert Shetterly’s distinct approaches to portraiture. With funding from Art Bridges, this program helped build new and reignited relationships with youth centers for recurring arts education programming, with a particular focus on participation from Black and at-risk youth.
The Summer Explorers program offered drop-in art making opportunities in July and August for families with schoolaged children and saw a 55% increase in attendance over 2022.
In 2023, we combined our existing Story Hour and Stroller Walk programs with new toddler art-making opportunities to launch Lil Rockwell.
Lil Rockwell brings together collaborations with the Southeast Steuben County Library and Nonnie Hood PRC, while encouraging daytime attendance at the KIDS ROCKWELL Art Lab. Hands-on projects included felt superhero capes, painting caregiver cards with flowers, full-body selfportraits and sponge-stamping. Attendance saw a 77% increase over the combined attendance from Story Hours and Stroller Walks in 2022.

ADVANCEMENT
The Rockwell Museum had an incredible year filled with programs aligned with the Museum’s annual theme, Heroes . Over 60 in-person and virtual programs were offered including thought-provoking lectures, engaging family days, several exhibition openings and a soldout TRL! (The Rockwell Live) Music series. In addition to these staples, The Rockwell Museum introduced several new programs in 2023: our first-ever Augmented Reality (AR) Art Experience featuring the Burden of Conquest exhibition by artist Shasti O’Leary Soudant, an Art History Club, Gallery Talks and our first annual member appreciation event inspired by Sam Van Aken’s final grafting of the Tree of 40 Fruit .

In the fall of 2022, The Rockwell Museum introduced a new Art History Club Series exclusively for Rockwell Members. Rockwell Members were invited to participate in a four-part virtual series where they were introduced to a new acquisition, learned about the artists and engaged in thoughtful discussion. A total of four virtual programs were offered, two in the fall of 2022 and two in the winter of 2023. As a culmination of the series, Art History Club members joined the Rockwell staff for an in-person reception to meet fellow club members, enjoy tasty bites and drinks and to learn more about the artworks featured in the series.
The Rockwell Museum hosted its firstever Member Appreciation Event inspired by Sam Van Aken’s final Tree of 40 Fruit grafting. Over 90 Rockwell Members joined us for a special evening featuring remarks by Executive Director Brian Lee Whisenhunt about the powerful impact of membership, discovered more about the Museum’s latest acquisitions, learned about Sam Van Aken’s grafting process and viewed the final graft onto the tree in Buechner Park. In addition, Rockwell Members enjoyed specialty-made stone fruitinspired cocktails and hors d’oeuvres and received locally made stone fruit jam.
