Smit hsonian A liate 2022 ANNUAL REPORT

In 2022, The Rockwell explored how artists find inspiration and what ignites that creative spark. Considering how individual perspectives, unexpected sources, and lived experiences inform the artistic process, we presented journeys that move from inspiration to creation.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Last year was a bridge connecting much of the work The Rockwell Museum undertook during the height of the pandemic to how we aspire to connect with community; have a positive impact on the lives of our visitors, members, students and educators; and work together toward deeper levels of empathy and understanding. We presented a dynamic range of exhibitions, programs and events virtually, in-real-life and hybrid, and while there were unforeseen challenges, we are thankful to our community for supporting The Rockwell through their participation, engagement and collaboration.

In 2022, The Rockwell’s annual theme explored inspiration and how artists and other creatives manifest their ideas into reality through the challenges of disability, visibility and complex relationships. I am incredibly proud of the Artists as Activists audio tour that was launched in March of 2022, exploring the myriad ways artists have used their talent to further causes that are important to them from the 19th to the 21st century. Having an audio tour experience that extends the story of the work in our galleries and presents another aspect of the American experience is something we have long aspired to provide. The Art Bridges Foundation lent paintings by Frank Stella and Keith Haring that inspired the idea and likewise supported its development through a grant. We are also thankful to community members Molly Bierman, Dr. Sharon Bryant, Alex Dell and Anjanette Lecher for their support in developing and narrating the stops on the tour. If you have not had an opportunity to experience the tour, it is available when you visit the museum or in the comfort of your own home on the mobile device of your choosing.

While many of the opportunities to engage with the idea of inspiration resonated deeply with our audience, the exhibition, interpretation and programming for Please Touch! The Art of Michael Naranjo was something that inspired deep engagement and thoughtful conversation with our visitors, community and team. Naranjo’s visit to Corning, NY was a true gift to so many people, but especially to the intimate group of visually impaired students who attended a workshop to learn more about his process. I am thankful to Michael, and his wife Laurie Naranjo, for their generosity in sharing so much of themselves and their lives with people all over the world. I am also thankful for the support we receive from Corning Incorporated, our area foundations and from our members that affords us the ability to craft life-changing experiences for small groups of people they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. And of course, we are grateful for the partnership we have with the TIA Collection in Santa Fe, NM that generously lent the work with the exhibition.

While our members and community see so much of the work our team undertakes, there is a great deal of conversation, meeting and planning that takes place ‘below the surface.’ In 2022, one aspect of our work we addressed was an update to our values which, while great, did not reflect who we currently are as an organization or how we seek to engage with and support our community. Our revised values crafted by the staff and adopted by our Board of Trustees are:

People | The Rockwell centers the individual in its experiences, exhibitions, programming, meetings, and engagements as our visitors, team members, volunteers, board and community are essential to everything we do.

Progress | The Rockwell employs its resources, position and programming as a force for good to improve mutual understanding, heighten empathy in our society, encourage a supportive environment and nurture connections between people.

Collaboration | The Rockwell embraces intentional and holistic collaborations and partnerships that strengthen the work of the Museum, enhance experiences and expand the possibilities of a museum focused on social impact.

Experimentation | The Rockwell believes in the power of experimentation, its successes and failures, to further the vision of the organization and deepen the connection to its programs, exhibitions, events and interpretation.

Zest | The Rockwell appreciates playful and unexpected approaches to language, design, interpretation, communications and organization which refresh, revitalize and enrich the museum experience.

Sadly, I can only encapsulate a small fraction of the activities of The Rockwell Museum in these pages, but I hope you will spend some time with the full report to learn how we served and supported our communities near and far during the last year. Please know that all we accomplished could not have been possible without the support and encouragement of businesses, foundations and members which mean everything to us and enable the Museum to focus on the most important aspect of our mission and work. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, staff and volunteers, thank you for all that you do.

MEASUREMENT OF MUSEUM SOCIAL IMPACT (MOMSI) STUDY

In 2022, The Rockwell was selected to participate in a national research project, the Measurement of Museum Social Impact study, to evaluate museum visitation and community wellbeing. Only 37 other institutions across the country participated in this project.

Study participants visited The Rockwell and/or Art Lab three times and completed an extensive survey at the conclusion of their visits. Participants at The Rockwell had a survey completion rate of 91%, nearly double the typical rate. The study provided validated data about the museum field and will result in published resources for replicating this study in more museums and public spaces in the future. At The Rockwell, we are incorporating this data into audience engagement planning and stakeholder communications.

As the study’s data team reported, “Overwhelmingly, participants noted that the Rockwell Museum benefits the community by providing learning and engagement opportunities ... Several responses connected learning and engagement opportunities with how the museum helps visitors value diverse communities. This is through a range of programming for different demographics, cultural representation in exhibits, and offering new perspectives. The museum is also a space for people to strengthen relationships. Not only did participants see it as a gathering space, but some noted it allows families to spend quality time together and encourages people to meet new people.”

Which social impact indicators demonstrated statistically significant positive change?

6 2022: Spark! From Inspiration to Creation

Shopping at The Rockwell Museum Store is not only a great way to shop a unique selection of offerings, but all purchases help support our mission to deliver compelling exhibitions and imaginative programs to the community.

COLLECTIONS + EXHIBITIONS

Under the guiding theme, Spark! From Inspiration to Creation , we mounted seven dynamic exhibitions, drawn from both our own collection and external lenders. The 56 works added to the collection throughout the year, many through generous donations, strategically enhanced our existing holdings. Together, the exhibitions and collection acquisitions meant there was always something new to see in the galleries! We are thrilled that these pursuits helped contribute to the energetic atmosphere of The Rockwell, and that they simultaneously expanded our ability to display and interpret a more inclusive view of the American experience.

Digitization

This year, 174 objects (114 2D works and 60 3D works) were photographed as part of our ongoing project to image and digitize The Rockwell Collection. These high-quality images are a critical part of our desire to increase public accessibility and The Rockwell’s digital presence.

Library Catalog

The Rockwell’s staff internal research library contains 6,325 books and other printed materials related to the study of our collection. The entire catalog was migrated to an online platform allowing museum staff to browse and request materials from any computer, on or off site.

EDUCATION + OUTREACH

The year truly sparked new and exciting collaborations, with accessibility and diversity being at the forefront. Blind artist Michael Naranjo offered a sculpting class for students from area school districts who are blind or sight impaired. We continuted our collaboration with Corning-Painted Post district art teachers to offer tours culminating in a student exhibition. The development of an audio tour for the Please Touch! The Art of Michael Naranjo exhibition and continuation of our Artists As Activists tour enhanced our offerings. These initiatives enabled us to take a comprehensive approach to making the Museum spaces and collection more accessible to visitors.

Our Volunteers + Reach

A dedicated group of 22 volunteers served 955 hours for the Museum. Over 5,500 students were engaged through in-person on-site school tours, classroom outreach and education programs. Plus, our virtual school tours reached over 86 classrooms across 15 states and Canada, to serve over 1,600 students.

17 Education + Outreach

CULTURE, COMMUNITY AND CLASSROOM

The Rockwell Museum proudly continued to partner with Local Learning Network (a national network for folk art in education) and The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes to offer Culture, Community & the Classroom, an active and culturally engaging three-part workshop for teachers and artists in the Finger Lakes region.

Teachers earned credits and learned how culture and traditional arts can be assets in their classroom as they build inclusive learning plans with a cohort model that centers teachers’ expertise. Folk artists built their portfolios and gained methods for teaching about art forms and their context to diverse students of all ages. Folk and traditional arts are found in every community. Study of traditional arts and their creators contributes not only to students’ understanding of culture and community, but also to their ability to think critically, gather and analyze evidence, and express their ideas and interpretations through personal creativity.

AUDIO TOURS

Mid-March 2022 saw the launch of our first audio tour, Artist as Activists, and right on the heels of that initiative, we launched a second audio experience to accompany the exhibition Please Touch! The Art of Michael Naranjo

The audio tours both featured significant steps towards community engagement and accessibility. Between the two tours, five community members–from high school students to Binghamton University professors–were engaged as narrators and collaborators. These narrators were invaluable to our process and more can be learned about them via our website or the tour rack card available at the Admission Desk.

Many steps were taken to create an accessible experience. Visitors can either scan a QR code if they prefer to use their own device to access the tour, or to borrow a screen-free device from the front desk that plays the tour stop automatically when pointed in the direction of the artwork. Headphones are available to better hear the tour at a desired volume. Additionally, we’ve installed large, bright floor stickers in front of the artworks on the tour for better visibility. Finally, the tour is even accessible if you do not visit the museum via a URL on our website.

We have extended the Artists as Activists tour into 2023 and added a new stop with one of our original narrators. We look forward to seeing how the audio experiences continue to open doors to engage with new partners and audiences.

Artists as Activists

The tour incorporates eight works from The Rockwell’s permanent collection along with two long-term loans from Art Bridges. Topics include treatment of animals, humanitarian issues of representation, race and prejudice, feminism, intellectual property, LGBTQ+ activism, systems of religious oppression and more.

Please Touch! The Art of Michael Naranjo

Please Touch! The Art of Michael Naranjo, invites visitors to experience remarkable bronze sculptures that are touchable – created by a Native American artist whose compelling life story will inspire reflection about art and artistic inspiration.

2022: Spark! From Inspiration to Creation

20

The Rockwell education team has developed an Artists as Activists school tour program for high school students as a companion to the audio tour. The program encourages students to consider how to use their own personal strengths and interests to put their voices to work for causes they care about. Artistic practice and activism have long been intertwined, and often in ways that are not immediately obvious just from looking.

ADVANCEMENT

The global pandemic has taught us the art of flexibility, ingenuity and perseverance. While challenging, it’s helped us reshape our programs and evolve in ways we never imagined. From virtual Happy Hours with the Director to our first-ever hybrid program to the reintroduction of our beloved inperson summer music series, 2022 was filled with a variety of ways for folks to participate. While in-person programming is back in full swing, The Rockwell Museum is committed to providing a mix of virtual, hybrid and in-person programming for years to come.

23 Advancement

TRL! Music on the Terrace

The Rockwell’s summer music series returned to the Museum’s terrace, but with a new twist! The newly branded TRL! (The Rockwell Live) Music on the Terrace Series featured live music, hors d’oeuvres and a specialty cocktail inspired by a work of art from the Museum’s collection! As a special treat, guests received a take-home card highlighting the evening’s featured artwork and a recipe for the accompanying specialty cocktail.

An Evening with Margot Lee Shetterly

The Rockwell Museum was ecstatic to be able to host our first Blockbuster Speaker program in two years. This event marked a significant milestone as the Museum’s first major hybrid program. Over 240 in-person guests and 110 online participants were captivated by keynote speaker and author of Hidden Figures, Margot Lee Shetterly, as she shared the true story of the black women mathematicians at NASA who helped fuel some of America’s greatest achievements in space.

Rockwell Masquerade Gala: Surreal Soirée

After a two-year hiatus, The Rockwell Museum was able to safely host our esteemed Masquerade Gala once again. Dressed in surreal-inspired attire, 150 members, not-yetmembers and sponsors joined us for a soiree featuring surreal decor, dinner, dancing, fun photos, cocktails and more. The Rockwell’s annual Masquerade Gala is a fundraising event that supports the Museum’s exhibitions, education programs, events and initiatives that serve our community and beyond. A big thank you to our sponsors, supporters and guests who helped the Museum reach its 2022 fundraising goal!

2022: Spark! From Inspiration to Creation

24

In addition to the 65+ programs we offered, 2022 marked the triumphant return of our largest in-person events like our Blockbuster Lecture featuring Margot Lee Shetterly, our Silver Dollar Society Recognition Event and our beloved Masquerade Gala.
