My hearing aids don’t define me — I do. I didn’t realize that my hearing loss was affecting me until it began affecting him. That’s when I made the choice to take charge of my hearing.

My family physician referred me to Audiology Associates. The moment I walked in the door, I knew I had found my hearing care home. Audiology Associates was patient, informative, and compassionate — my appointment felt more like a conversation than a consultation. We talked about my current lifestyle and how I could maintain — even improve — my hearing with their help and my determination.

Does David’s story sound familiar? Visit our AudigyCertified practice to learn how you too can experience better hearing.

Dear Friends, More Americans these days are contemplating using alternative medicines. From herbs to acupuncture and more, people try different methods to enhance and improve their health. Some of these practices and techniques are ancient, having been used over the centuries by cultures all over the world. You can hop on the Internet and learn about all the different offerings, and probably will chance upon sites that attempt to wow and woo you with stories of miraculous cures. As we highlight a few forms of alternative medicine in this issue, including herbs for

anxiety and essential oils, our caveat is to study everything you come upon carefully and to be sure to consult with your primary care physician about the pros and cons of any alternative tactic you are considering trying. Staying informed and being astute about claims that seem too good to be true will only make you a better proponent of your own health and wellness. Here’s to your health,

HERBOLOGY HAS BEEN AROUND FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS.

Overview: Complementary & Alternative Medicine LEARN MORE ABOUT DIFFERENT HOLISTIC APPROACHES TO HEALTH By Angela S. Hoover, Staff Writer Complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) are holistic approaches to healthcare that address the entire body and treat the individual’s mind and spirit, not just symptoms of illness. CAM continues to grow in popularity. More than 30 percent of American adults and 12 percent of children use CAM, according to the National Institutes of Health’s National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCIH). In 2011, more than 42 percent of American hospitals offered alternative therapies, according to a survey by the American Hospital Association. Here is an overview of some common CAM offerings. COMPLETE SYSTEMS Ayurveda: This is one of the oldest forms of healing. Its goal is to keep the body in an overall balanced state through diet, meditation and relaxation techniques and herbal remedies. Homeopathy (Allopathy): The main principle

behind homeopathy is to treat like with like. A substance that causes symptoms in an individual can be used to eradicate those symptoms in larger doses, stimulating the body’s ability to self-heal. Conventional medicine uses this allopathic theory with vaccines and when prescribing a stimulant such as Adderall to hyperactive children. The formulas are prepared by specialty pharmacists who carefully dilute the substance and shake it to activate it. Naturopathy: Naturopathic doctors, who are trained in both conventional and alternative medicines, seek to understand what causes a condition by exploring its mental, physical and spiritual manifestations. Naturopathy relies on many treatments to bring about natural healing from within, such as nutrition, behavioral changes, homeopathy, herbs, acupuncture, aromatherapy, massage therapy and meditation. This makes it difficult to design studies to test naturopathy’s effectiveness. However, one study that tested naturopathy for low back pain found positive results. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): The ancient practice of traditional Chinese medicine relies on the laws of nature to improve health.

The basis for TCM is that the underlying disease itself must be treated, not just the symptoms that develop as a result of the illness. Acupuncture, acupressure, herbal therapy and energy balancing are examples of TCM treatment modalities. TECHNIQUES AND PRACTICES Acupuncture: Acupuncture, which dates back to at least 2,000 years in China, asserts problems arise within the body as a result of blocked energy channels or meridians. Tiny needles are inserted into the meridians to unblock energies, thus alleviating symptoms. This technique should only be performed by a licensed acupuncturist. Western scientists are still studying how acupuncture works. It has been shown to relieve chronic pain, nausea, high blood pressure, asthma and many other conditions with few side effects. Acupressure is similar to acupuncture, but without the needles. Practitioners use their hands, elbows or feet to apply pressure to specific points along the body’s meridians. Research suggests acupressure may decrease chemotherapy patients’ nausea and reduce anxiety in people scheduled to have surgery. Biofeedback: This technique allows people to control bodily processes that normally happen involuntarily, such as heart rate, blood pressure, muscle tension and skin temperature. It is said to improve high blood pressure, headache, irregular heartbeat (cardiac arrhythmia) and chronic pain, among other conditions. An electronic monitoring device helps the patient learn how to recognize and control different parts of the body to relieve medical conditions without pain or medication. Many hospitals and clinics now have experts on staff who can teach biofeedback. Researchers still aren’t sure how or why biofeedback works. Relaxation seems to be a key component since most people who benefit from the practice have conditions that are caused or exacerbated by stress. Research has shown the technique can help with nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy. Herbology: Herbs, botanicals, vitamins, minerals, probiotics, flowers and flower essences, leaves, stems, roots, bark, fruits and seeds are used for preventative healthcare, to enhance the function of body systems and organs and to treatment various conditions. Herbology has been around for thousands of years; it was the main treatment of disease in ancient cultures before the invention of antibiotics. Some herbs are very powerful and can interact with traditional medications, so be sure to consult your primary care physician before trying herbology or any CAM.

EFFECTIVE PHYSICAL THERAPY HALLMARK OF NEW DEPARTMENT AT THE PAIN TREATMENT CENTER

I

t’s a very exciting time at The Pain Treatment Center of the Bluegrass. For years our physicians have used a multi-specialty, multi-modality approach to treating patients within our physician practice, our surgery center and our behavioral medicine department. Now we’ve added to our Center a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department, featuring Jason Goumas, an experienced physical therapist. What separates Jason from other PTs? “I keep my treatments as simple as possible using equipment people can easily get for use at home,” Jason said. “If they can’t do PT at home, it is of little value. It’s not what you do here (in the office) that will get you better, it’s what you do at home. My job is to show you how to get yourself better and help out with things you can’t do on your own.” Because of this home work, patients don’t need as many visits, which makes treatment possible for those who are facing constant co-pays and high deductibles. “I have some patients that come on a weekly basis, some every other week, some monthly,” Jason said. “And then there are those who live far away who might come every two months.” Education is key, according to Jason. “The basis of what I do here revolves around educating patients regarding the natural consequences of daily activity upon the body,” he said. “For example, when we sit for lengthy periods of time, we naturally become a bit stiff simply due to lack of movement. The key to overcoming this is not to buy a $1,000 chair, but rather to sit actively, which simply means to not only engage the muscles of the core and back, but also to understand that the longer we sit, the more stiffness will develop. The true solution is to perform the correct stretches regularly enough to stay on top of the problem.” Failure to do this will inevitably result in a progressive increase in dysfunction, which over time can lead to degenerative changes. Can discomfort be eliminated? “Another component of my patient education is to quit viewing most discomfort as abnormal,” Jason said. “If you’ve been weeding in the garden for a period of time, it is completely normal for the low back to feel a bit stiff. By stretching your back out from time to time to reset, the discomfort can be minimized and not allowed to get out of control. The same goes for feeling tightness between the shoulder blades while washing dishes or feeling stiff after a long car ride. Those sensations are normal and are not going away, but there are things you can do resolve them. The key is to address the issues as they arise during the day so they are not allowed to build.” The main thing about Jason’s role at the Center is he is part of an integrative group, so the collective knowledge creates the best possible treatment for the patients who come to them. “Something I say to about every patient is that most pain arises due to a combination of how people do what they do, as well as what people are not doing that they need to be doing in order to keep themselves in good working order,” Jason said. “The problem is that people don’t understand what is going on in their bodies and don’t know what to do about it. Once they are educated, they can then start to control pain better. The really sad thing about so many of these patients is that had they been properly trained when the problem first

I KEEP MY TREATMENTS AS SIMPLE AS POSSIBLE USING EQUIPMENT PEOPLE CAN EASILY GET FOR USE AT HOME – JASON GOUMAS

began, they most likely would not be patients here nor have nearly as much of the degenerative problems they have.” For more information about The Pain Treatment Center of the Bluegrass and/or the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation department, please call (859) 278-1316 ext. 205 or visit the Center’s Web site at www.pain-ptc.com.

Alternative Medicine Impacts Psychological Hardiness IT’S OFTEN USED WITH CONVENTIONAL MEDICINAL PROTOCOLS By Dr. Tom Miller, Staff Writer Psychological hardiness is an individual’s resistance to stress, anxiety and depression. It includes the ability to withstand grief and accept the loss of loved ones. Alternative medicine is a more popular term for health and wellness therapies that have typically not been part of conventional Western medical approaches but are often used along with conventional medicinal protocols. Coping and dealing with stress in a positive manner play a major role in maintaining the

balance needed for health and well-being. Dr. George Vaillant began following 185 young men from Harvard University for a period of almost 40 years, making it one of the longest follow-up studies in human development. Vaillant was very surprised to find people who had been healthy and robust in their youth could die suddenly and prematurely because of their tendency to react poorly to stress. Vaillant’s research team noted people with poor psychological health – that is, poor stress-coping skills – were particularly vulnerable to premature death especially if they were depressed or psychologically unstable. In this group of 185 men, 48 were identified as having a poor ability for coping with stress. Out of these 48, 18 died by age 53. In comparison, only two people with good psychological health died by the same age. These results led Vaillant to the conclusion that good mental health slowed down the aging process, while poor mental health hastened it. The concept of psychological hardiness was cited as the factor that made a difference in an individual’s ability to cope with stressors more effectively. Individuals possessing psychological hardiness seemed to be able to creatively adapt to challenges. This appeared to increase the life span and also positively impacted relationships, family life and work. Vaillant noted psychologically healthy people are more adaptive and flexible. They tend to have a stable family life and a satisfying marriage. They make steady progression in their careers and demonstrate an absence of any disabling mental

or physical illness. They often have a companion, as opposed to living alone. They are not likely to abuse substances but may drink moderately. Perhaps they deal with their stress by finding constructive solutions rather than resorting to alcohol or other substances of abuse. BECOME A MASSAGE THERAPIST PROVIDE HEALING EXPERIENCES AND ENJOY ABOVE-AVERAGE WORK LIFE BALANCE

MASSAGE WAS RECENTLY LISTED AS ONE OF THE TOP FIVE CAREERS IN THE FIELD OF HEALTHCARE SUPPORT.

O

ver the years many studies have shown a massage has amazing benefits to our overall wellness, such as reduced stress, improved range of motion and reduced pain. However, we rarely have a chance to discuss the benefits of giving a massage. Becoming a Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) is an incredible journey, and often, an incredible career. Learning to become a massage therapist can benefit all age groups and walks of life; such as recent high-school graduates, single parents and even those looking for a “retirement job” can learn this amazing skill and reap astounding rewards. A recent U.S. News and World Report article listed massage as one of the top five careers in the field of healthcare support. According to the article, massage therapists often enjoy a very flexible schedule, above average work life balance, strong job market and low stress levels. Thanks to research being performed all over the world, massage has started to change the way we view modern medicine. Massage Therapists can be found working with physical therapists, dentists, chiropractors and even with M.Ds. We're no longer bound to day spas and private clinics, though a large number of therapists still lead happy and successful careers there as well. Indeed, the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics gives massage a “bright outlook,” and shows it to be one of the fastest growing fields in the United States over the next seven years. Massage therapists enjoy a unique role. We're allowed to provide safe, healthy touch to our clients in a protected atmosphere. Allowing a person to relax and seek comfort is a crucial step in the healing process for many people. For example, The Atlantic’s article, “Study of the Day: Massage Speeds up Muscle Healing, Reduces Pain” suggests the support massage therapists provide the skeletal-muscular system can be astounding. Massage helps speed the recovery process for injuries, balances the body and improves the posture of the recipient. Massage Magazine’s 2017 article, “Cancer Pain Populations Benefit From Massage” indicates massage modalities even relieve some of the pain and discomfort associated with cancer Career opportunities aside, massage allows the therapist a chance to have a truly mindful hour. How often, in 2017, do we have an hour to focus simply on one task? Where our problems are not laid open to be examined, and where we can concentrate on the needs of another? The

low lights, peaceful music and quiet associated with massage treatment rooms provide a stark contrast to the busy offices and city streets most of the population endure. Stresses from the outside world do not have a place in a massage room—which is a benefit to the therapist and client alike. Plus, massage therapists receive unique training in the sciences. Anatomy, physiology and kinesiology play an important role in guiding the intuitive touch of a massage therapist. Educated minds and skilled hands are the earmark of an LMT. Therefore, a strong education is important. While regulations vary from state to state, most programs should be no less than 600 clock hours. A quality program will cover the sciences mentioned above as well as massage techniques. Classes in career readiness, and the ethics of massage should be included to guide the prospective therapist on their path to happiness and success in the industry. While working at Lexington Healing Arts Academy as the Compliance Coordinator and Placement Specialist, I've watched many students reach success. As a LMT myself, I always grow super excited for new class-starts, because I know every student who walks through our doors has a fresh chance to change their life, and the lives of their clients. If you would like more information on becoming a massage therapist, there are plenty of great resources available. The American Massage Therapy Association is a treasure trove of knowledge and quality insight into career benefits and job openings for a LMT. The AMTA provides a list of schools that meet the association's standards for quality education. My Alma Mater, Lexington Healing Arts Academy, is another resource open to students in eastern and central Kentucky. With nearly twenty years of experience educating massage therapists, LHAA has the knowledge you need to begin your path toward providing a healing experience for you, and your future clients. About the Author Jeff Zutant is a licensed massage therapist (LMT) and a staff member at Lexington Healing Arts Academy. Beyond his role as massage therapist Jeff coordinates the academy's compliance efforts including student retention and placement.

THE TRUTH

ABOUT SOME COMMON DENTAL MY THS

T

he profession of dentistry has experienced an amazing evolution over its lifetime. References to tooth decay can be found in various ancient texts. At one time, a local barber would provide haircuts and pull troublesome teeth in the same shop. Dentistry evolved from these humble beginnings to what we know today: a structured medical discipline where patients benefit from evidenced-based care. Oddly enough, though, several oral health myths and misconceptions have failed to fade away along the journey. Take a look at several common myths still lingering around and learn the truth about them.

TRUTH: BRUSH 2X EVERY DAY WITH A SOFT TOOTHBRUSH.

Myth: I can’t see or feel a problem, so my teeth are fine. Just because an issue is not visible to your eye or you are not currently experiencing pain does not mean you can skip regular dental appointments. Small cavities, just starting to form, generally do not cause discomfort, but they can be treated before they develop into a larger problem. Help head off serious issues by scheduling regular dental exams and cleaning. Myth: Sugar is to blame for all cavities. Sugar consumption can cause problems, but the acid-producing bacteria found in your mouth are really to blame. They can be fed by sugar as well as other items such as vegetables, fruit, etc. Cavities form when acid-producing bacteria are allowed to linger in your mouth. Myth: Baby teeth aren’t really important. Even though baby or primary teeth are only temporary, they serve a very important function. Children need their primary teeth to eat and speak. Additionally, baby teeth aid in guiding in a child’s permanent teeth and help support a child’s confidence and self-esteem. Be sure to schedule regular dental appointments for your child, with the initial appointment scheduled at least by her or his first birthday, to help manage the condition of the child’s teeth and get him or her accustomed to seeing the dentist. Myth: Brushing more than once a day can harm the enamel on my teeth. Brushing the recommended twice a day will not damage the enamel on teeth on its own. Using something other than a soft toothbrush or an ultra-soft brush if recommended by your dentist can result in damage. The same is true if you are brushing too hard. Also, talk to your dentist about the type of toothpaste you use regularly, as some products are more abrasive than others. Myth: My gums are bleeding so it’s best to give them a break from brushing/flossing. Gums will generally bleed when they become inflamed due to food debris or dental plaque becoming stuck in between teeth. Giving them a break will not help get anything unstuck. Keep brushing and flossing gently. Check with your dentist if the bleeding persists. Myth: I can just chew gum to clean my teeth. It’s true sugar-free gum can help protect and clean your teeth if you chew some following a meal. The chewing action helps produce saliva to neutralize and rinse away acids produced by food, aiding in avoiding

tooth decay. However, chewing gum is not an effective replacement for brushing and flossing. It’s only a useful extra step. Myth: The whiter my teeth, the healthier my teeth. That’s not quite how it works. Many people may find their teeth become stained from various foods and drinks or certain medication they take at some point in their life. Teeth become less white as people age. This does not mean their teeth are not healthy. Myth: Women can skip seeing the dentist while they are pregnant. Pregnant women need to continue to see their dentist as usual and may actually need to see him or her more frequently, as some women may experience a condition called pregnancy gingivitis. Studies have shown women experiencing oral infections, such as periodontal disease, are at risk of delivering a premature, low-birth-weight baby. Myth: Dental problems are only just dental problems. Your dental health can extend beyond your mouth to impact your overall health. Ignoring your oral health can potentially lead to other health issues, including stroke, diabetes, heart disease and more. Think of your mouth as a gateway to the health of your body. It can work in the reverse too. Other health conditions may require you to be more mindful of oral hygiene habits in order to maintain your oral health. THERMOGRAPHY:

FUNC TIONAL VS. STRUC TUR AL IMAGING

any people are familiar with structural imaging such as ultrasounds, X-rays and mammograms. However, they aren’t as familiar with the thermography option. Thermography is a totally non-invasive option for breast and body screenings. It has been FDA approved since 1984 and is used as an adjunct to mammography for breast screenings. This rapidly developing technology is used to detect and locate thermal abnormalities characterized by an increase or decrease found at the skin surface. The technique involves the detection of infrared radiation naturally emitted from the body that can be directly correlated with the temperature distribution of specific areas of the body. These exclusive patterns tell a story about what’s happening inside your body and particularly in the breast. Everyone has a unique thermal pattern that is exclusive to them; no two people are alike thermographically. Scans can be used for specific screenings to see the function of the thyroid, intestinal health, dental health, inflammatory conditions, joints and muscles THERMOGRAPHY and the lymphatic and vascular systems. The breast screening monitors breast health and IS A TOTALLY looks at their overall function. Thermography can indicate active fibrocystic disease, irregular NON-INVASIVE vascular patterns, inflammation and even OPTION hormone imbalances. Thermography has achieved an average sensitivity and specificity FOR BREAST of 90 percent. Because it’s non-invasive and no-contact, it makes it perfect for those with AND BODY breast implants or dense or painful breasts. SCREENINGS. The breast images are very individual; like your thumbprint is exclusive to you, your breast thermogram is exclusive to you and these patterns should never change. The images you see on your first visit should look the same way from that day on. If there is ever a change, it does not necessarily indicate cancer but can alert you to areas of concern and show your practitioner exactly where to look. Since thermography is able to detect hormone level changes, it can be useful in assisting your physician in determining if you have a hormone imbalance such as estrogen dominance. Estrogen dominance increases the chances of certain types of cancer, including breast cancer. An estrogendominant hormone profile does not guarantee cancer, but studies have shown estrogen feeds cancer cells. Ten years ago my own sister, in her early 30s, showed signs of extreme estrogen dominance so it gave her a chance to work with her practitioner and reverse this hormonal imbalance and hopefully prevent her from ever developing cancer. Studies have shown when a specific hyperthermia pattern in the T2 or T3 thoracic vertebrae regions at the base of the neck is present, this indicates an overactive autoimmune system. This information can be helpful in the diagnosis of some autoimmune diseases, although not precisely which autoimmune dysfunction. Often, this will validate those suffering from fibromyalgia symptoms or chronic pain. Sadly, it can take years for those with autoimmune conditions to get a diagnosis, but because thermography can “see” inflammation, pain sources and the lymphatic system, many people are finding this screening helpful in guiding them and their practitioner in treatments. The lymphatic system is another important area to screen. It moves fluid and infection-fighting white blood cells throughout the body and

helps rid the body of toxins and waste. It includes tissues and organs and if it’s not flowing properly it can lead to disease, so it’s really important to know its functionality. So if a thermogram shows a congested lymph system, meaning it’s not functioning properly, it can give you a chance to correct this problem and prevent sickness or disease. You do not need a referral or prescription from your practitioner to get a thermogram. It’s so important to me that women in our community know they have choices in their healthcare and where they go for their healthcare. All our images are interpreted by medical doctors who are board certified in thermography. TOOTH WHITENERS

he decision to get one’s teeth professionally whitened can be a big one. There are a number of factors to consider, such as cost, duration, and overall effectiveness. At Adkins Family and Cosmetic Dentistry, here in Lexington, we have been helping people with this decision for some time and have produced many happy patients through careful decision-making over the years. There are many things that contribute to staining teeth, running the gamut from eating berries to smoking to coffee and tea. Because the teeth are porous, a lot of material can get lodged over the years in the tiny holes we all have in our teeth. A good whitening plan involves using a gel to absorb into the teeth that causes the stains to be eradicated. As dental professionals, we actually take a mold of the teeth, so each case is particular to the patient. The mold allows for the smallest of cracks, crevices, and holes to be accounted for. This makes for uniform whitening for all of the teeth involved, unlike the highly uneven whitening we usually see from generic trays one might buy from a common drugstore shelf. Groceries and pharmacies are filled with tooth whitening kits promising big results, but these cheaper and basic options usually don’t whiten at all or do so unevenly. Chewing gums, special toothpastes, whitening strips, rinses, and paint-on films are all at-home methods that deliver the BESIDES THE whitener in one form or another, but MOLD AND GEL, none are on par with professional help and care. People tend to come in THERE ARE OTHER after these methods don’t work and realize they could have saved a lot of METHODS WE time and money by calling us in the beginning. OFFER, SUCH There is a myth about whiteners damaging your teeth, but this AS LASER AND is simply not true, especially as ULTRAVIOLET removing stains and discolorations is nothing but good for the teeth. LIGHT THERAPY. Many people don’t realize that the stains took quite awhile to develop – DR. ADKINS on the teeth and it takes some time to remove them, which is one reason multiple visits are necessary for a thorough whitening. It is also important to realize that once the teeth have been whitened, if the patient returns to the same activities, they will start to stain again; in other words, whitening is temporary and is relative to how much the patient is causing the teeth to be stained by what they eat, drink, smoke, etc. Besides the mold and gel, there are other methods we offer, such as laser and ultraviolet light therapy. These can be discussed during your initial consult. While caps and veneers cannot be whitened, there are other options we can discuss to get your teeth exactly where you want them regarding whiteness and brightness. Please call to set up an initial visit. We’re ready to help you with your teeth and keep you smiling.

Herbs for Health Management IN YOUR CUPBOARD IS A CORNUCOPIA OF BENEFICIAL BOOSTERS By Angela S. Hoover, Staff Writer Herbs are a foundational root in medicine and health treatments, dating back thousands of years throughout every culture around the world. Modern Western herbalism comes from ancient Egypt. The Greeks developed a comprehensive philosophy of herbal medicine by 100 BCE and the Romans built upon it to create a variety of medical practices, some of which are still used today. Herbalists employ the concept of herbal synergy, which requires using the whole plant, rather than just extracting the active ingredient, to make the herb as safe and effective as possible. For instance, meadowsweet contains salicylic acid, the active ingredient in aspirin. It also contains tannin and mucilage, which protect the stomach from the salicylic acid.

Here are a few herbs that can be safely used in cooking, as teas or in external applications. They can also be found in supplements or oils. Basil. Like other herbs in the mint family, basil settles the stomach and is a natural disinfectant. It is both antiviral and antibacterial. It is a mild antidepressant used often in aromatherapy because it clears the head and relieves intellectual fatigue. It’s also good for dealing with insect bites. Crush fresh leaves and rub them on the itchy spot. Black Pepper. Black pepper stimulate the digestive system, expectorates coughs and helps clear congestion from the lungs. Excessive use of black pepper can slow drug metabolism in the liver, so be aware of this possible reaction to your prescription medications. Cayenne. Useful both topically and internally for arthritis and rheumatism, cayenne is good for cold, flu, viruses, sinus infections and sore throat, as well as headache and fever. It increases thermogenesis for weight loss and is a catalyst for other herbs. Cinnamon. It’s been proven 99.9 percent of viruses and bacteria cannot live in the presence of cinnamon, making it a great antibacterial and antiviral agent. Garlic. Generally used for cardiovascular conditions, including high cholesterol, garlic helps fight infection, detoxifies the body, enhances immunity and assists with yeast infections, asthma, sinusitis and circulatory problems.

&

Ginger. Pregnant women know ginger helps nausea, but it also eases motion sickness and circulatory problems and reduces the symptoms of colds and chills. It’s also good for indigestion. Lemon. Known for its antiseptic properties, the vaporized essence of lemon can kill meningococcal bacteria in 15 minutes, typhoid bacilli in an hour, Staphylococcus aureus in two hours and Pneumococcus bacteria within three hours, says Jean Valnet, M.D. It also improves micro-circulation and immune function and promotes white blood cell formation. Oregano. A powerful antibiotic, oregano has been proven to be more effective in neutralizing germs than some chemical antibiotics, battling Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli. It is also high in carvacrol and rosmarinic acid, which act as natural decongestants and reduce histamine. It supports respiratory tract health, helping air flow through the nasal passage. Rosemary. It is an antiseptic and antibacterial that cleanses and detoxifies the body, supports the liver and combats cirrhosis. Its smell has also been found to improve memory and mental clarity and focus. Sage. Many believe sage is the key to a long life. Drinking sage teas and inhaling sage essential oils are beneficial for respiratory illnesses and lung issues because of sage’s antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. It’s also helpful for anxiety, nervous disorders and abdominal complaints.

VISUALIZATION

WITHOUT E YES

6. Dharana = the ability to direct our mind 7. Dhyana = the ability to develop interactions with what we seek to understand 8. Samadhi = complete integration with the object to be understood Pratyahara Pratyahara is a Sanskrit word often understood as “restraint of our senses,” shared above. According to an article from Yoga International, this word comes from two parts, prati (against/away) and ahara (what we take in from the outside). Pratyahara then may translate as “control of ahara.” Just a few examples of things we take in (ahara) include food, misunderstanding and our sensory perceptions. By controlling what we eat, we may build physical strength or regulate blood sugar. By controlling misunderstanding, we may relieve anxiety and recognize falsehoods. By controlling our sensory perceptions, we enable the mind to turn inward.

O

ur incredible human minds can see without eyes. We have the power of vision whether our lids are open or shut, measured at 20/20 or legally blind. With yoga practice, we can create a vivid vision nonexistent outside our minds but quite tangible to the mind that has created it. A mountain vista, passing clouds and geometric patterns sketched on the surface of our neural pathways can be part of a practice involving pratyahara. Pratyahara is one of the eight limbs that comprise a yogic approach to living. Limbs Yoga is not a religion but rather an accepting approach compatible with religious beliefs. The eight limbs of yoga, as translated from yoga sutra 2.29 and presented in “The Heart of Yoga,” are not akin to levels that you work up to but are rather co-existing components: 1. Yama = our attitudes toward our environment, including: • consideration for all living things, especially those who are innocent, in difficulty or worse off than we are; • right communication through speech, writings, gesture and actions; • noncovetousness or the ability to resist a desire for that which does not belong to us; • moderation in all our actions; and • nongreediness or the ability to accept only what is appropriate. 2. Niyama = our attitudes toward our environment, including: • cleanliness or keeping our bodies and our surroundings clean and neat; • contentment or the ability to be comfortable with what we have and what we do not have; • the removal of impurities in our physical and mental systems through the maintenance of such correct habits as sleep, exercise, nutrition, work and relaxation; • study and the necessity to review and evaluate our progress; and • reverence for a higher intelligence or the acceptance of our limitations in relation to God, the All-Knowing. 3. Asana = the practice of body exercises 4. Pranayama = the practice of breathing exercises 5. Pratyahara = the restraint of our senses

Nidra Yoga nidra is a powerful and frequently untapped tool for practicing yoga that may involve visualizations to explore the inner workings of the mind from a restorative state. To try yoga nidra, seek a yoga class with a qualified instructor who teaches nidra to guide your experience. This is what you can expect: • Depending on how the class/nidra session is structured, there may be physical movement practiced beforehand as in a yoga class. • You will prepare to be still but conscious in a comfortable position for a period of time rarely lasting less than 15 minutes. Tip: To avoid falling asleep, place yourself in a seated but reclining position on blankets/ bolsters. • To begin the nidra practice, there will be an exploration of your physical body such as a body scan where you are guided to strategically relax your body. • Guided breathing is an essential component and the regulation of breath may be employed to bring your energy level into check. • You may be led to construct a helpful visualization, to observe and modify the perception of sensations in your body or explore another subtle component of your experience. • More rarely, you may experience a blissful state of ecstasy. This may involve a loss of ego, lack of awareness of your physical body, a sense of union with all that is around you and all that is and other valuable exposures. ELDER ORPHANS:

NEW TERM CALLS ATTENTION TO PROBLEM FOR AGING POPULATION

Aging Life Care Solutions will help you create a plan to face challenges

PROPER PLANNING CAN ALLEVIATE STRESS AND ALLOW SENIORS TO EASE INTO THEIR OLDER YEARS.

A

ll of us at Aging Life Care Solutions, LLC are dedicated to helping the aging population live well as it grows older. Our mission is to support the best possible quality of life for seniors and their families as they face the challenges of aging. We believe planning for both foreseen and unforeseen obstacles is an integral key to successful aging. Recently, we became aware of the term “elder orphan.” A CNN article reported 22 percent of the American population is at risk of aging alone without a spouse, children or other family nearby to assist them. Some other articles say this number is closer to 29 percent. When we think of the word orphan, we think of someone alone and abandoned. One Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition of orphan is “one deprived of some protection or advantage.” We have found those members of the aging population who meet the definition of an “elder orphan” are not the only ones struggling. Even those seniors lucky enough to have family close often find their family is so busy with the demands of their own lives that they have no time available to assist them. Couples are often so consumed with caring for each other they become isolated in their own homes. The demands of aging and the stress it places on seniors and their loved ones can impact successful aging. Unfortunately, the term “elder orphan” may conjure up notions of pitying and is for those with no control over their circumstances. The aging population in today’s world is nothing if not in control. This is where proper planning can alleviate stress and allow seniors to ease into their older years. There are innovative ways to avoid becoming an “elder orphan” long before you get to the point where you need assistance to care for yourself. There is an ever-growing number of resources available to seniors and their families, but the path to finding them is not always easy. There is not a one-size-fits-all solution to the challenges of aging.

What makes Aging Life Care Solutions, LLC unique is that we use a holistic approach to life care planning. This approach provides both present-day and future planning. Our aim is to reduce worry and stress by developing a written plan tailored to the individual’s specific goals. This plan will guide both the senior and his or her family to decisions that promote his or her quality of life. We update the plan as needs change or if the unexpected happens. Having a plan in place that addresses the major challenges of aging can provide the peace of mind necessary to make your senior years the best they can be. About the Authors Tamela R. Alternative Remedies for Anxiety and Depression By Harleena Singh, Staff Writer Interest in complimentary and alternative medicine (CAM) is increasing as consumers and health care professionals search for additional ways to treat anxiety, depression and other mental health disorders. Some of these remedies include: St. John’s Wort More than 30 studies show it to be effective for treatment of mild forms of depression, although its effects haven’t been conclusively proven either way. Omega-3 Fatty Acids Studies show caviar, salmon, mackerel and sardines can reduce clinical depression. These coldwater fish have high amounts of omega-3 fatty acids, which seem to have a preventive effect on manic depression. Mind-Body Relaxation These techniques can elevate mood and increase concentration and energy. Daily meditation can have long-lasting positive effects on physiological processes. Yoga Yoga, combining physical postures, breathing exercises, meditation and a distinct philosophy, is one of the top 10 practices of CAM. It may also help alleviate anxiety and depression.

Exercise Regular exercise can help with all levels of depression. Folate There may be a link between low levels of folic acid (the synthetic form of folate) and depression. Increase your folate levels by consuming foods such as beans, lentils, fortified cereals, dark leafy greens, sunflower seeds and avocados. Saffron Saffron extract may improve symptoms of depression, but more study is needed. High doses can cause significant side effects. Always check with your doctor before taking these (or any medicinal) herbs. Use Essential Oils for Stress Relief By Michelle Chalkey Barichello, Staff Writer Everyone has some stress. It’s easy to turn to unhealthy coping mechanisms (alcohol, sugary foods) when you’re exhausted from a hard day. But these habits only lead to more stress. And too much stress can be harmful to your health. According to the American Institute of Stress (www.stress.org), three out of four doctor visits are for stress-related ailments. Thankfully, nature offers healthy alternatives to help you relax. Essential oils are an effective tool to get you into a relaxed state. They have been used for centuries for their medicinal and therapeutic benefits. Scents and compounds in essential oils impact the brain in different ways, affecting moods and emotions. The different volatile aromatic compounds that make up an essential oil determines the oil’s benefits. Essential oils support the process of reprogramming the

stress response on a chemical level. Various essential oils interrupt unhealthy stress responses and help you maintain homeostasis – the body’s state of being healthy, alert and effective. The chemical compounds in citrus oils, for example, can help cells return to their normal state. To get the relaxation benefits of essential oils, put a few drops in a diffuser or a dab on your wrists, then rub your wrists together and inhale the scent. Oils get into the bloodstream within 30 seconds when applied to the bottoms of the feet. Using essential oils for calming purposes is an effective way to manage your stress. Try adding one of these essential oils best known for their relaxing properties to your nighttime routine: • Lavender • Frankincense • Clary Sage • Vetiver • Cedarwood

PROBIOTICS: FOR LIFE, FOR HEALTH

P

robiotics, the focus of the latest health fad, are far from new. The concept behind them was introduced in the early 20th century when Nobel laureate Elie Metchnikoff studied the longevity of Bulgarian peasants and declared it was the result of their consumption of fermented milk products. He believed consuming beneficial microorganisms could improve health. Researchers continued to investigate this idea and the term “probiotics”— which means “for life” (as opposed to antibiotics) — eventually came into use. According to WebMd (www.webmd.com), probiotics are microorganisms such as live bacteria and yeasts that are good for your health, especially the digestive system. Bacteria that are naturally present in the intestines help digest food, destroy disease-causing microorganisms and produce vitamins. These bacteria are considered to be good or beneficial – not disease causing – because they are vital to the proper development of the immune system. They keep the gut healthy. They help with the absorption of food and nutrients. When you lose good bacteria in your body, probiotics help replace them, seeking to maintain a balance between good and bad bacteria so the body can function properly. Probiotics are available in foods and dietary supplements. They can be sorted into two groups, Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium. Within each group, there are different species and within each species there are different strains or varieties. Lactobacillus, the most common probiotic, is found in yogurt. Other foods containing probiotics are fermented and unfermented milk, miso, tempeh and some juices and soy beverages. Researchers are still trying to figure out exactly how probiotics work and to determine which probiotics are best for certain health problems. Different probiotics may act in different ways. They treat such gut-related conditions as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and infectious diarrhea. Some research appears to show they tackle other problems in other parts of the body, including skin conditions such as eczema, tooth decay, periodontal disease and urinary tract infections. People who are lactose intolerant may find probiotics ease their symptoms. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulates probiotics like foods, not like medications. So probiotic supplement makers

TALK TO YOUR PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIAN BEFORE ADDING PROBIOTICS TO YOUR DIET.

do not have to demonstrate their products are safe – or even that they work. The FDA has not approved any probiotics for preventing or treating any health problem. The National Institutes of Health (www.nih.gov) says although some probiotics have shown promise in research studies, strong scientific evidence to support specific uses of probiotics for most health conditions is lacking. More research using widespread, carefully designed clinical trials is needed to draw firmer conclusions about probiotics’ usefulness. Generally probiotics are safe. Some people have mild side effects when they start taking them, such as upset stomach, diarrhea, gas and bloating. People with serious medical problems such as a weakened immune system may have more severe side effects and thus should be monitored closely while taking probiotics. Probiotics may also cause too much stimulation of the immune system. If you’re considering adding probiotics to your diet, be sure to talk to your primary care physician first.

Magnesium Treats Depression As little as 248 mg of magnesium per day leads to an astounding reversal of depression syndrome, according to research conducted at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont and published in the journal PLoS One in June 2017. Magnesium plays a critical role in many body functions, including heart rhythm, blood pressure and bone strength. It also combats inflammation. Over-the-counter oral magnesium tablets are as effective and comparable to prescription SSRI treatments for mild to moderate depression, according to Emily Tarleton, MS, RD, CD, the bionutrition research manager at the University of Vermont’s Clinical Research Center. Many foods are rich in magnesium, including almonds, flax, pumpkin and sesame seeds, chard, broccoli, spinach, dark chocolate and yogurt.

Authenticating Imported Plants and Superfoods Medicinal plants from abroad are not always the real deal. Special medicinal plants that grow only in a single region but have a high global demand have led to a boom in counterfeits, according to Peter Nick of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) Botanical Institute. “The caterpillar fungus is deemed to have a strengthening and aphrodisiac effect in traditional medicine,” Nick said. “Every year, however, the exported quantity of this mushroom is eight times that of its harvest.” Even experts have a difficult time identifying counterfeit medicinal plants and superfoods. Often, only a few species of a particular plant have the desired properties. For example, of the 1,400 species of bamboo, only the leaves of three species can be used to prepare a popular health-promoting tea, according to Nick. Indian basil, also called holy basil and tulsi, may help breathing difficulties or bronchitis, but other species may cause allergic reactions. Such risks are the reason ingredients are checked for correctness in import controls. These checks are mostly carried out microscopically with the help of botanical descriptions. But with ingredients such as Chia powder, a type of sage, this method is useless. An alternative method of gene sequence readouts are time consuming and expensive. Nick and his team at KIT have developed a process based on small differences of the gene sequence to specifically apply gene scissors to certain points of the DNA strands of genetic material. Similar to key fitting a lock, the scissors only fit a specific pattern of gene fragments that may serve as a genetic fingerprint for the species. If the scissors snap shut, Nick knows the plant is authentic. The team has already collected 7,000 bar codes in its database.

Nutmeg SPICE STILL PRIZED FOR ITS VERSATILITY By Tanya Tyler, Editor Health&Wellness Nutmeg is not a nut. It is actually the seed of an evergreen tree called Myristica fragans (fragrant nutmeg). The tree takes seven years to bear fruit, but it may produce until it is 90 years old. The seeds are dried in the sun over a period of six to eight weeks. During this time, the nutmeg shrinks away from its hard seed coat and is picked out when the shell is broken with a wooden club. Nutmeg was once prized in medieval cuisine as a flavoring and preservative, but it was also known for its medicinal properties (people believed it could ward off the plague). These attributes made it very expensive. It was also difficult to obtain. At one point, the Banda Islands, also known as the Spice Islands, located in eastern Indonesia, were the only place in the world that produced nutmeg. Arabian sailors sold nutmeg to Europeans but wouldn’t reveal their source. The first Europeans reached the Banda Islands in 1512 and quickly bought up as much nutmeg as possible to take back home. Desire for control of nutmeg production led to a war between the Bandanese and the Dutch East India Company, which decimated the native population. When the British got control of the islands, they transplanted nutmeg trees to other sites, including Sri Lanka and Singapore. Today estimated annual world production of nutmeg is between 10,000 and 12,000 tons. Indonesia and Grenada are the leading producers and exporters of nutmeg. Other producers include India, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka and some Caribbean islands. Connecticut is known

B E A U T Y

as the Nutmeg State – not because nutmeg is grown there but because some traders in the past whittled nutmeg out of wood. Nutmeg is used in baked goods, meat courses, drinks such as eggnog and vegetable dishes. It can be used to make jam or crystallized and made into candy. Antibacterial nutmeg essential oil, derived from the tree’s bark and leaves, is used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. It is often found in cough syrup or toothpaste (it boosts gum immunity) as well as in alternative and herbal medicine. Beneficial components found in nutmeg include fiber, manganese, thiamin, vitamin B6, magnesium, copper, calcium and folate. Often used as a folk treatment for various ailments, including stomachache and headache, nutmeg has also been shown to fight halitosis; eliminate the toxins that accumulate in the liver and kidney; dissolve kidney stones; and

improve skin health and appearance. Nutmeg is recommended as a remedy for insomnia. And it has great potential for battling cancer. Studies have shown that a certain methanolic compound in nutmeg and its essential oil can actually induce cell death (apoptosis) in leukemia cells. In large doses, raw nutmeg has psychoactive effects. Some people have claimed it to be an aphrodisiac. Another claim is that it improves brain health by reducing the degradation of neural pathways that commonly afflicts people with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. However you use it, sprinkle on – nutmeg can certainly spice up your life. Sources • • • •

GRIEF THERAPY DOGS

HELP REDUCE STRESS AND COMFOR T HUMANS

GUS WILL UNDERGO EXTENSIVE TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION SO HE WILL BE ABLE TO HELP FAMILIES.

S

cientists have proven petting animals can reduce stress, lower blood pressure and even create a hormonal response that raises serotonin levels and helps fight depression. For many years, therapy dogs have been on the scene where natural disasters or traumatic events have occurred. According to the American Kennel Club, a therapy dog goes with its owners to volunteer in settings such as schools, hospitals and nursing homes. From working with a child THE who is learning to read to visiting a senior in an assisted living facility, therapy dogs and their PRIMARY owners work together as a team to improve the JOB OF lives of other people. A growing number of grief therapy dogs have A GRIEF begun working in funeral homes across the THERAPY country to comfort grieving families. The primary job of a grief therapy dog is to help people feel DOG IS calmer – exactly what is needed when people are TO HELP grieving the loss of a loved one. Therapy dogs PEOPLE FEEL are nonjudgmental listeners who want nothing more than to be petted and to provide comfort CALMER. to human companions. A grief therapy dog is traditionally available when families are making funeral arrangements for a loved one, during calling hours, at a children’s activity prior to a funeral service or during a Life Celebration. The dog is also available for community visits. Grief therapy dogs are respectful of a client’s wishes; they are

trained to approach only if they are solicited. They do not jump up or get rambunctious or overly excited. A good grief therapy dog is very reserved, accepting of attention but not demanding it, and is not only willing but happy to go to work. A local funeral home, Milward Funeral Directors, recently introduced Gus, its future grief therapy dog. Gus is a beautiful black lab who belongs to Rob and Lee Milward and their two children, Kate and Wills. Gus is a cheerful puppy who loves cuddling with his family at home, going for walks and receiving well-deserved treats. The Milward family hopes Gus will bring as much comfort to grieving families in his new role as a future grief therapy dog as he is bringing love into their home and to the funeral directors at Milward. Gus will undergo extensive training and certification so he will be able to help families cope with their grief during a funeral or Life Celebration. About the Author Kim Wade has been a marketing consultant for more than 20 years, specializing in the funeral industry. Currently, she is the Community Relations Director for Milward Funeral Directors, the 37th oldest continuously operating family business in the United States, which has three locations in Lexington. The Power of Tai Chi For Health A new study provides insight into the biochemical mechanisms by which Tai Chi may provide both physical and psychological benefits. Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese mind-body exercise system that uses meditative movements. Using magnetic resonance spectroscopy to measure brain and muscle chemistry revealed significant increases in a marker of neuronal health in the brain and significantly improved recovery rates of a metabolite involved in energy production in leg muscles of older adults after practicing 12 weeks of Tai Chi. Another study found Tai Chi improved COPD symptoms in patients and could be a substitute for pulmonary rehabilitation. Harvard Health Publishing with Harvard Medical School says Tai Chi addresses all the key components of fitness – muscle strength, flexibility, balance and, to a lesser degree, aerobic conditioning. The benefits of Tai Chi include decreased stress, anxiety and depression; improved mood; improved aerobic capacity; increased energy and stamina; improved flexibility, balance and agility; and improved muscle strength and definition. Some research evidence indicates it can enhance quality of sleep, enhance the immune system, help lower blood pressure and improve joint pain, symptoms of congestive heart failure and overall well-being.

Acupressure to Reduce Menstrual Pain Acupressure is a Chinese technique utilizing massage or pressure applied to specific points of the body. Berlin researchers tracked 221 women ages 18 to 34 years to see if acupressure could relieve their menstrual pain. About 50 percent to 90 percent of women experience pain during their periods, such as lower abdominal pain, headache, backache, nausea and diarrhea. Using an app instructing them to self-administer acupressure to three different acupressure points and gather and track data, 37 percent of participants reported a 50-percent reduction in pain intensity after three months. After six months, 58 percent of the women reported a 50-percent reduction in pain intensity. The results were published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology in April.

Herbal Products Have Serious Side Effects With Some Prescription Drugs The British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology analyzed 49 reports and two observational studies with 15 cases of adverse drug reactions this past January. The majority of patients were diagnosed with cardiovascular disease or cancer and had kidney transplants. They were mostly taking warfarin, alkylating agents and cyclosporine. Researchers found a number of herbal products may affect the properties of prescription drugs, leading to alterations in the drugs’ effectiveness, as well as posing potentially dangerous side effects. Most notably, patients taking warfarin and/or statins for the treatment of cardiovascular complications reported significant interactions after taking herbal products that included sage, flaxseed, St. John’s wort, cranberry, goji juice, green tea and chamomilla.

WHAT IS

BEHAVIORAL OPTOMETRY?

ehavioral optometry starts with the concept that vision is learned. When we’re born, we don’t know how to use our arms, legs and hands. We also don’t know how to use our eyes. We have to learn how to integrate them with the rest of our body. The brain must process what the eyes are seeing, and then it has to integrate that information with the other senses. From a behavioral standpoint, seeing requires a more holistic approach, getting all the senses to work together. Vision is movement: We learn how to use our eyes through moving our bodies. Our eyes control our movement through space. You can’t make an eye movement without sending a message to your body, and you can’t make a body movement without sending a neurological message to your eyes. We know 70 percent of the input to the brain comes from the visual sense. From a developmental standpoint, the eyes initially are just simply watching, tracking and following the hands. Later, as we continue climbing the developmental ladder, the eyes begin directing the hands, telling them where to go. Visual input helps us attain fine motor skills as our eyes guide our fingers to do such tasks as threading a needle or holding a pen and writing. The eyes working together as a team allows us to judge space and distance. Changing input results in changing output. While the term “hand-eye coordination” is well known, it is more accurate to use the phrase eye-hand coordination. The eyes have to lead first, but when we’re learning how to do this, we start out watching hand movements. The first year of life is more about taste and smell. The next two years are more about touch and feel. By the time we’re three years old, vision starts to become our dominant sense. By using our hands and eyes together, we discover we can “touch” and explore the world with our eyes. We don’t have to physically grab items to determine what they are. If you don’t learn proper visual skills early in your life, your eyes and brain will often devise shortcuts. Your brain has to use the visual information from both eyes. If the two eye views cannot be matched up, the brain will be forced to make a choice. It will reject all or part of the information from one eye. It may ignore, suppress or turn off visual information it cannot use. You can retrain the brain and teach it how to see properly and optimally. From a behavioral and developmental vision standpoint, this means re-forming or re-creating neurological pathways. In some cases, you can even create new pathways. This empowers you to take charge of your own visual wellbeing. The behavioral or developmental optometrist has two goals for every patient: that their eyes will learn to work as a team so the patient will have good depth perception, and they will not have to depend on glasses in order to function in the world.

YOU CAN RETRAIN THE BRAIN AND TEACH IT HOW TO SEE PROPERLY AND OPTIMALLY.

About the Author Dr. Graebe received both his B.S degree in Visual Science and Doctorate of Optometry from Indiana University. He is a Behavioral Optometrist and learning expert. He has been in private practice here in the Bluegrass area for the past 32 years.

Dr. Miller really takes the time to listen and looked at my whole health history. He makes it clear that Type 2 Diabetes, Hypertension and Obesity are being caused by something. My other doctors just didn’t take the time to do this, they never even talked about what was causing any of these. The other doctors just gave me more and more medications. I knew these were just masking symptoms and not fixing anything. Dr. Miller makes complete sense.” Q: What does Dr. Miller do to find out what’s not working correctly inside your body? A: “Dr. Miller doesn’t mess around. He has an amazing blood panel lab he orders through Lab Corp. He gets the results and does a ‘Functional Medicine’ computer assessment. It is very impressive."
