WE'VE COME A LONG WAY! It’s been a good run. From 12 pages to 28, the Rockin’ at the Rock magazine has been a staple at Little Rock Air Force base since before even the 19th Airlift Wing was here. We are an evolving organization and we’re always working to stay current with new trends. That being said, this is the final issue of Rockin’ at the Rock. Don’t fret--the paper issue may be going away, but your information isn’t! All our information will be easily accessible in many other ways, including: Rockin’ at the Rock Website (www.rockinattherock.com) Rockin’ Rundown E-Newsletter Rockin’ at the Rock Facebook Page (facebook.com/19fss) Rockin’ at the Rock Instagram (@RockinattheRock) Little Rock AFB Mobile App Be on the lookout for our new Rockin’ Rundown Calendar, starting in May. It can be found throughout FSS facilities, as well as the Commissary, Base Exchange, and Pharmacy.

12 PCS PRO-TIPS

5

Marie Kondo Your Life

If it doesn’t spark joy, it doesn’t move with you. That sweater you wore once? Gone! This is also a great time to teach your kiddos how to “declutter” those toys they never play with and send them off to another home! Overseas Pro-Tip: If you’re moving to a foreign country, declutter electronics especially if you will be living off base. There is no point in bringing items that aren’t the correct voltage.

2

Anything you want to transport yourself, post “Do Not Pack” signs on the door or individual items. –Heather C.

Keep everything from ID’s, laptops and any other small personal items in a “Do Not Pack” room or area. Trust us, if it isn’t labeled, it will be packed. We’ve heard stories of house plants being bubble wrapped and taped!

3 Don’t Procrastinate As soon as you have your orders in hand, hit the ground running! There are so many things that need to be accomplished. While it may seem like you have plenty of time before you go to your next duty station, it will fly by.

4

Ship car and household goods as early as you can so they arrive at your next duty station around the same time you do. –Jessica P.

Pack up the house ASAP! You aren’t going to need absolutely everything under the sun for the time leading up to your move, so pack it and send it off! It can take a while for it to get to your new residence, so ship early! If you can, send your car as well! You don’t want to be without a vehicle trying to navigate an unfamiliar city. Overseas Pro-Tip: Use your unaccompanied baggage to ship things right before you go so you can have your necessities with you as long as possible.

Double check the packers aren’t labeling 20,000 boxes as “miscellaneous”! –Ashley B

Make it easy on yourself and check that your boxes are labeled accurately. It will make it less stressful and it will ensure items aren’t missing.

Get a Power of Attorney

You may need a POA for anything from banking to housing to your kids. You’ll need it more often in the PCS process than you think!

Make a PCS binder. -Hellen S.

It’s a good idea to make a binder with all of your important documents needed for your PCS. Use it for orders, tracking what you put in boxes, checklists and so much more. Make sure it’s sturdy and labeled well.

7 Throw away your Karo syrup! –Megan W.

8

We all know that moving can be a mess, but don’t make it a sticky mess! Toss out all open goods (especially liquids) or pack them very well in separate Ziploc bags.

10 Don’t Forget Fido! With the stressors of PCSing, we can often forget about making accommodations for our furry friend. If you are driving with animals, pack a separate bag with everything they’ll need (food, leashes, toys, treats, cleaning up supplies, etc.) Remember to be flexible! Travels with animals is an ordeal all on its own!

Know your entitlements! –Chris P.

Check with finance in regards to any allotments or allowances while PCSing. Also, make sure you know how many house hunting days you get, how many days you’re allowed in TLF, Do It Yourself (DITY) move option, etc.

11

When does it expire?

12

Make sure all ID’s are current and up-to-date before departing! It can be quite the hassle to renew ID’s at a location you’re not familiar with.

Stay Positive

It’s hard. So, unbelievably difficult. Stay strong. Stay positive. You got this!

RESILIENCY THROUGH THE EYES OF A MILITARY CHILD written & photos by Natalie Dove

Deployments are hard. They are hard on the service member, hard on family members, and hard on relationships in general. Something that needs to be looked at a little more closely is what military children go through when a parent deploys. Military kids go through much more than we think. Deployment can be rough on them. While many have a happy-go-lucky spirit in every situation, others struggle when the backbone of their family is missing due to TDY, deployment, or short-term assignments. “I am left alone some times when I am talking about my dad with my friends. I don’t really talk about my dad and why he’s [deployed]. It’s different because their dads are there and mine isn’t,” Miana, 13, said. She would often get bullied because she is a military child. “I cried when my dad was gone and it made me seem weak. I am only weak when my dad’s gone.” “I feel sad and I don’t like when they’re gone,” Dionna, 9, said. She often looks at photos of her mother and her.

David, 10, whose dad coaches his basketball and football teams when he is home, said, “ It’s very hard for me because I always think of him.” “It’s hard because you cannot spend any time with him. You cannot roughhouse with him, you cannot watch videos with him, and you cannot watch football with him,” Charleigh, 8, said. “It’s just like he left you for no good reason.”

“MILITARY KIDS ARE BEYOND RESILIENT.” As for advice to other military kids, the overall consensus is to be yourself and stay strong. No one likes it when their parents are out of the picture, but it isn’t permanent. They will come home, they still love you, and they miss you more each day they are gone.

“When [my brother is] having a hard time, I have to be there for him and when [my sister] is having a hard time, Military kids are beyond resilient. Gabrielle admires her mom because she is able to set goals for herself and ultimately achieve them.
