Adventure Awaits

with Outdoor Recreation written by Natalie Dove

When’s the last time you did something for the first time? Outdoor Recreation has so many things to get involved in you probably didn’t even know about! Throw your preconceived notions out the window and just “get in the truck” as Recreation Assistant Matt Carr likes to say. Outdoor Recreation here at Little Rock Air Force Base offers opportunities you cannot get anywhere else. From cave diving to paddle boarding to zip lining, your adventure is out there and it’s just waiting for you to find it! Aside from events, ODR is loaded with resources. If you want to go hiking, camping, fishing or anything in between, they’ve got you covered. Just call and anyone there can help you get started on your path towards your journey. Did you know ODR rents out equipment as well? They offer lawn and garden equipment, camping, boating, games, sports equipment, and much more! Anything you need to get the job done, Outdoor Recreation probably has something to help you out.

14

Whether you’re a natural when it comes to the outdoors or prefer the air conditioning, ODR has something for you!

Take it from us.. “After moving here in 2016, I wanted to explore the outdoor activities the Natural State had to offer. Outdoor Recreation offers an excellent and inexpensive way to do that. The affordable event prices and opportunities to meet Airmen from every walk of Air Force life keep me signing up for trips. My favorite trips are the kayaking adventures. Arkansas lakes are absolutely beautiful in the summertime. The R4R program is an excellent way for Active Duty Airmen and their families to get out and explore the state they are stationed in for a reasonable price. I encourage everyone who is interested in trying new outdoor activities to join the ODR staff on trips. Every trip I have participated in has been an encouraging and positive experience.”

-Katelyn Zeringue

“I have had good experiences with Outdoor Recreation programs and anytime I stopped by to get info, they were very welcoming and informed. I love the fact that they have trips that help get folks outside who are on the fence about outdoor activities into the outdoors by offering controlled and outfitted trips with knowledgeable guides. My flight did the fishing trip on Lake Maumelle and rented equipment for a three day hike and had a blast. I plan on skydiving with them soon and also going on a Buffalo River float trip. The R4R trips are extremely affordable and encourage young airman to get out and enjoy Arkansas. Go talk to Matt and the folks at Outdoor Rec. They will give you solid advice, have all the gear you may need, and you can likely go on an awesome trip with little to no risk all while meeting new people!”

-Shane Thornton

“I wanted to get involved in Outdoor Recreation because when I first arrived here a year ago I did not have a car, but I still wanted to explore the beauties of Arkansas. Something I love about ODR is the opportunity to get out and meet other people outside of my job and my inner friend circle, also to see new sites. The staff is always fun to talk to and full of information! What keeps me coming back are the trips. I love being outdoors so the fact that I can do this for a good price with transportation included is a plus. Some of my favorite trips I’ve been on have to be the caving Adventure at Blanchard Springs and the Petit Jean hike! Being a single airman in the dorms, I do use the R4R Program. People who qualify for R4R get a discount on the trips which is nice. If you’re thinking of going on an ODR trip, I’d say ‘Do it!’ Especially if you’re new to the base and are looking to get out and meet people. Even if you think it may not be for you, I guarantee you’ll change your mind while you’re out there.”

-Lindsay Walls-Ott
