Welcome to the long-delayed 19th anniversary edition of your CGI Rochester International Jazz Festival! We are so excited to be back with you all!

On behalf of our entire festival team, we would like to extend our deepest thanks to our loyal patrons for their support and patience during these difficult past two years.

We are humbled and truly proud to acknowledge the long list of supportive sponsors, to thank our welcoming community and to salute our first-class festival team. Together, your jazz festival helps to deliver millions of dollars in positive economic results via a diverse lineup of all styles of creative improvised music. Welcome to beautiful Downtown Rochester for the 19th edition of the CGI Rochester International Jazz Festival! You are in the company of more than 208,000 visitors who will enjoy nine wonderful days filled with 325 shows — with a record 130 free shows thanks to the City of Rochester.

This year’s incredible lineup features more than 1,750+ outstanding artists from around the world. Headliners this year include Chris Botti, the Devon Allman Project with special guests Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Tony Emmanuel, Spyro Gyra, Robin Thicke, Sheila E., Booker T, New Power Generation, G Love & Special Sauce, The Bacon Brothers, and Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors. And let’s not forget to applaud the wonderful volunteers, crew and staff, as well as the many corporate sponsors who make this all possible.

The Rochester International Jazz Festival is a successful conduit that brings people throughout the region and far beyond together to share in a common love. Such camaraderie — for the love of music — brings a positive energy to our city and furthers our legacy as a vibrant and neighborly place to live, work, educate, and raise a family.

As one of the world’s leading international music festivals, this festival will host artists from many countries including Australia, Bahamas, Canada, Cuba, England, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Israel, Japan, Netherlands, and Scotland.

During this transition year, to provide more space for large shows, all headliner shows will be free and presented on two major outdoor stages: Midtown Stage at Parcel 5 – the site of three free shows nightly all nine days; and at Martin Luther King, Jr., Memorial Park, which is also home to two free shows nightly during the final weekend, June 24 and 25.

Dear Jazz Fans, Welcome to the 19th edition of the CGI Rochester International Jazz Festival! After a two-year hiatus, Monroe County’s premier music festival of the year is back, bringing together once again musicians and jazz lovers from around the world to play, sing and dance in the streets and in venues all across downtown Rochester.

I know we’ve all missed the music that echoes throughout downtown Rochester during jazz fest. Now that we’re emerging from the pandemic, let’s gather together safely to celebrate the return of the rich music culture our community is renowned for.

CGI’s Rochester International Jazz Festival attracts tens of thousands of friends and families from across the nation and the world to our area. It provides a chance for visitors to experience the vibrant arts and music culture Monroe County offers and boosts our local economy and the small businesses our area knows and loves.

I hope you take advantage of that opportunity.

With more than 325 shows — 130 of them free — featuring more than 1,700 artists playing the best of pop, soul, jazz and blues, this year’s festival is certain to be exceptional.

JAZZ. It’s in our DNA. In the 1950s, Stanley Thomas Jr. created a haven on Troup and Clarissa Streets where neighbors could escape their burdens and immerse themselves in the music of budding artists like Wes Montgomery, Miles Davis, Count Basie, Pee Wee Ellis and Sarah Vaughn.

The Pythodd Club, a fusion of the Knights of Pythias and Odd Fellows Lodge names, was Rochester’s first jazz mecca, spreading the uniquely American sound up our streets, around our corners and into our lifeblood.

We honor that legacy today, as jazz continues to draw us together the way only music can.

Rising Stars Letter One Award winning trumpeter Giveton Gelin taught himself to play the trumpet at an early age by emulating his favorite recordings. After years of self-tutelage, bass player Adrian D’Aguilar, became his mentor providing Giveton with the tools to play jazz.

Later on, the Nassau-born trumpeter would study with Dr. Eddie Henderson at the Oberlin Conservatory; that same year, he received recognition at the Young Arts Foundation and Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program. Giveton delivers expressive trumpet playing with refined inflections.

Richie Stearns and Rosie Newton grew up 150 miles and a few decades apart. While both were raised by a professional cellist, Richie started playing banjo at 14 and Rosie began classical piano lessons at eight, eventually moving to classical viola as a teen. Both shared incredibly unique, musically-immersed childhoods: Richie’s family founded the iconic Grass Roots Festival of Music & Dance (which he is now President of) and by her junior year of high school, Rosie was playing fiddle and touring with folk rock band The Mammals. During that time, the two were introduced at Saratoga Springs’ Flurry festival -- a meeting that would spark a fated friendship and unique musical bond.

He is a living disciple of John Coltrane having followed Coltrane from club to club in the early 1960s assimilating and transcribing everything he heard the great master play. Recognized as a Rising Jazz Star by the Downbeat Magazine Critic’s Poll, Champian was also named Pianist and Vocalist of 2019 by Hot House Magazines Readers Poll. Mr. Frisell’s career as a guitarist and composer has spanned more than 40 years and many celebrated recordings, whose catalog has been cited by Downbeat as "the best recorded output of the decade." Recognized as one of America’s 21 most vital and productive performing artists, Frisell was named an inaugural Doris Duke Artist in 2012. He is also a recipient of grants from United States Artists, Meet the Composer among others. In 2016, he was a beneficiary of the first FreshGrass Composition commission to preserve and support innovative grassroots music. Upon San Francisco Jazz opening their doors in 2013, he served as one of their Resident Artistic Directors. Bill is also the subject of a new documentary film by director Emma Franz, entitled Bill Frisell: A Portrait, which examines his creative process in depth.

They say it takes nearly a decade for a wine to mature. The same could be said for The RT’s (formerly The Rad Trads). If you caught their brand of raucous, beer-soaked trad jazz and blues in the early days, you‘ll see the same ingredients (boisterous horns, impassioned vocals, and a driving groove) but a new flavor, and the kind of maturity and subtlety that only comes with time. That’s why it felt like the right moment to change the band’s name, Patrick Sargent (vocals, saxophone, keys) explains. “We made this album that felt more authentic and honest than anything we’d ever done, but it didn’t sound like a record by a band called The Rad Trads.

So it only felt right to take ownership of this next step in our evolution and abbreviate the name.”

UNDER THE SURFACE

Three generations of unique Dutch musicians have found each other in a common urge to improvise in which aesthetics, poetry and ensemble play have a major role. The listeners are taken to an almost dreamlike new reality. Under the Surface is a new Dutch band formed by drummer Joost Lijbaart, guitarist Bram Stadhouders and vocalist Sanne Rambags. Their debut album released on Challenge Records in 2017 was nominated for an Edison. The improvisations of Under the Surface are far from abstract and sound as compositions; Rambag’s voice rhymes, whispers and sings over the melody lines of Stadhouders and the subtle percussion of Lijbaart.

The atmosphere is made out of silence and reveals the pure kindred spirit communion between the musicians.

The first, predictably, is his extraordinary guitar playing. Considered by those in the know to be among this planet’s greatest guitarists, his playing is simply miraculous, as it would take three musicians, or more, to do what Tommy does solo. Who else, for example, when playing “Day Tripper,” can lay down the rhythm part, dig into the riff and sing the melody all at once on just one acoustic guitar? Which brings us to the other aspect of his music always mentioned, and without which the first might not be as powerful or as infectiously appealing: the joy. Yes, joy.

Because it’s one thing to play these multi-dimensional arrangements flawlessly on an acoustic guitar. But to do it with that smile of the ages, that evidence of authentic, unbridled delight, is an irresistible invitation to feel his music as deeply as he does.

Jazz guitarist Peter Bernstein has been a part of the jazz scene in New York and abroad since 1989 having performed on over 200 recordings and countless festival, concert and club performances with musicians from all generations. As a leader, Peter has released 12 albums and a DVD, Live at Smoke. His first break came while attending the New School where he met the legendary guitarist Jim Hall. Hall asked Peter to participate in his Invitational Concert as part of the 1990 JVC Jazz Festival which also featured John Scofield and Pat Metheny. The live recording was released as “Live at Town Hall Vol. 2” by Music Masters. Hall noted that Peter “…has paid attention to the past as well as the future. Hailing from the Hudson Valley, NY, singersongwriter Will Bryant draws inspiration from the songwriting styles of the 60s and 70s and captivates listeners with the familiarity and instant memorability of his songs. Will grew up in a musical family in Austin, TX, immersed in music from the earliest age, with artists such as Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, and Paul McCartney laying the groundwork for Will’s own creative identity. Adam Melchor is a 24 year old recording artist from New Jersey who currently resides in Los Angeles, California. Growing up in Jersey City with a very musical family, Melchor knew he wanted to pursue music from a very young age.

During college, he got his degree in opera, but after his graduation he took a different path and now writes mellow indie-folk-pop music. Melchor had a humble start, as do most musicians.

According to his Spotify bio, he recorded demos in his room, played at local bars and restaurants, joined a band for a short period of time, et cetera, et cetera. In 2019, he released several more singles and another EP. In a February 2020 interview with 1883 Magazine, Melchor told them that while growing as an artist, he began to use different recording techniques to compliment his voice better and improve his music. Near the end of 2019, he headlined a US tour with Dodie Clark, a UK based singer-songwriter. While traveling across the US playing shows, Melchor began to gain the level of popularity and recognition that he has today. Adam is more than a singer-songwriter. He has also directed and produced all three of his music videos for three of his singles, “Joyride,” “I Choose You” and “Metadata”.

Arturo O’Farrill, pianist, composer, and educator, was born in Mexico and grew up in New York City. Arturo’s professional career began with the Carla Bley Band and continued as a solo performer with a wide spectrum of artists including Dizzy Gillespie, Lester Bowie, Wynton Marsalis, and Harry Belafonte. In 2007, he founded the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance as a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the performance, education, and preservation of Afro Latin music. Arturo has performed with orchestras and bands including his own Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra as well as other Orchestras and intimate ensembles in the US, Europe, Russia, Australia, and South America.

Following her winning the 2019 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition, she is currently recording her debut recording, which will feature Samara backed by the Pasquale Grasso Trio. Growing up in New York, music was a pervasive presence, due to the inspiration of her paternal grandparents, Elder Goldwire and Ruth McLendon, who led the well-known Philadelphia-based gospel group, The Savettes. Winning the Vaughan award was transformational for Joy. “I was suddenly on the jazz radar. It’s still bizarre to think of how fast things have progressed.” Since then, Joy has dug deep to discover her jazz roots, without losing sight of the innate simplicity that makes her sound shine. Her first album announces the arrival of a young artist destined for greatness.

Stephane Wrembel is quite simply one of the finest guitar players in the world. The breadth and range of his playing and compositions are unmatched. This prolific musician from France has been releasing a steady stream of music since 2002 and has truly made his mark as one of the most original guitar voices in contemporary music. David Fricke at Rolling Stone Magazine called him “a revelation.” In January of 2021, Wrembel released The Django Experiment VI as he put the finishing touches on his book of transcriptions. Beautifully printed and bound, Django L’Impressionniste was released on April 22, 2021. Wrembel revels in transcending and expanding. “I just play my own music,” he says. “I like to believe that it is beyond any one genre and that there is something in it for everyone. It’s not only for the rock music lover, or for the Django lover; it’s not only for the jazz lover. It’s for the music lover.”

Scottish saxophonist and RIJF favorite Tommy Smith is a leading light in European jazz, first and foremost as one of the finest saxophonists of his generation, and latterly as the founder and current director of The Scottish National Jazz Orchestra (SNJO). These career-defining achievements are framed by his status as an international recording artist; a composer and arranger of extraordinary ambition; and not least, as a jazz educator. His prolific career began in earnest when, aged only sixteen, he recorded his first album Giant Strides. He was rewarded with a scholarship to Berklee College of Music, an experience that has shaped his affirmative approach to jazz. Since then, he has made 27 solo albums as a leader for Blue Note, Linn and his own label Spartacus Records.

Sy Smith has long since solidified her place in the world of underground soul music (she’s often called “the hardest working woman in underground soul”). This Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter and producer helped cultivate the nu-soul scene in that city more than 10 years ago, a scene which now easily boasts some of the most progressive artists of that genre to date, some of whom came directly from Smith’s own band line-ups (including Thundercat and Kamasi Washington). Her catalog includes 5 studio albums, with contributions from a who’s who of producers (James Poyser of The Roots, Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest and Nicolay of The Foreign Exchange). All 5 of her albums, including her brand new project “Sometimes A Rose Will Grow In Concrete” have been heralded by critics around the world for Smith’s lyrical dexterity, her vocal whimsy (often colored with a very distinctive rhythmic swing that’s all her own) and her ability to spin a story like few others in soul music.

Listeners often remark on Smith’s vocal range, which moves effortlessly from a speakeasy, gritty alto all the way to a stratospheric soprano whistle register reminiscent of the late Minnie Riperton.

Raised in the cosmopolitan port city of Jaffa, now a significant presence on the international jazz scene, Borochov is creating a new musical hybrid - bringing the sacred sounds of his upbringing to a jazz quartet setting. His latest release Blue Nights (Laborie Jazz 2019) is a nine-track multicultural joyride of enchanting lyricism, exotic motifs, anthemic builds and virtuosic expression. In addition to recording three albums as a leader, Borochov appears on three albums with Yemen Blues, of which he was a founding member, arranger and co-producer. He has toured across four continents and performed at countless prestigious venues. Borochov won the prestigious 2020 LetterOne 'Rising Stars' Jazz Award European edition, which was presented to him in February 2021 by vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater.

Lioness is a brand new collective of female jazz instrumentalists living in New York City whose mission is to inspire and educate the community at large by sharing music created by women in jazz, both past and present. Through outreach in the schools and in community spaces for the general public as well as providing networking opportunities for female musicians, Lioness performs and conducts workshops focusing on the contributions of women in jazz. Their debut release “Pride and Joy,” on Posi-Tone records was met with much critical acclaim, drawing rave reviews from Downbeat, Jazz Times, All About Jazz, and many other publications. Hans Bilger is a bassist, songwriter, and composer from Brooklyn, NY. The eldest in a musical household, he spent his childhood playing folk and country gospel in a family band. The experience colored his later studies of improvised, classical, and experimental music.

Bilger is also fascinated by the natural world.

While studying evolutionary biology at Yale University, he co-authored a study on musical structure in birdsong with the ornithologist Richard Prum and wrote Aviary, a piece that uses songbird songs as raw material for a series of improvisatory and through-composed movements. Last fall, he joined the labs of Julia Clarke and Michael Ryan at UT Austin to start a PhD on the evolution of vocal communication in birds, bats and frogs. His scientific work is supported by fellowships from the National Science Foundation, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), and UT Austin.

Jazz-center-of-the-universe-based, exiled German-born drummer Jochen Rueckert presents his working quartet with guitarist Mike Moreno, bassist Matt Penman and legendary saxophonist Dayna Stephens.

The band from New York City plays Jochen's compositions containing surprisingly more optimistically swinging sections rich with chords than one would expect from a teutonic drummer, sprinkled with the occasional 3/8 bar for good measure. Jochen's deliberate avoidance of formal music education, albeit initially for budgetary reasons, provides a great lack of erudite nonsense in his writing. Jochen is celebrating his 4th album, titled "Charm Offensive" (Pirouet records, 2016).

Booker T.’s Soul Stax Revue is a presentation of Booker’s hits with the MGs, such as “Green Onions,” “Hang ‘Em High” and “Time is Tight” and of the classics recorded on Stax Records by legendary artists such as “Try a Little Tenderness” by Otis Redding, “When Something is Wrong with my Baby” by Sam and Dave and “Gee Whiz” by Carla Thomas. The Stax Revue features a ten-piece big band with three lead vocalists, a three-piece horn section and Booker’s usual rhythm section and delivers a high-energy experience curated to take the audience on a journey through Booker’s eyes. His brief personal anecdotes provide wonderful context for the music and Booker’s legendary history with Stax makes him the perfect artist to present such a revue. Booker T. is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Musicians Hall of Fame inductee, GRAMMY(™) Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and winner of four GRAMMY(™) Awards. It can be argued that it was Booker T. Jones who set the cast for modern soul music and is largely responsible for its rise and enduring popularity. He pushed the music’s boundaries with his hits on Stax, refined it to its essence and then injected it into the nation’s bloodstream.

After the great success of Sarah McKenzie’s 2017 disc, Paris in the Rain (Impulse! Records), the 31-year-old Australian pianist, singer, and composer returns with the poignant, Secrets of My Heart. The former disc opened more opportunities for her to perform around the world in such far away places as Brazil, Korea, Japan, and also established her in the United States. Its title song became one of her signature tunes and is one of the highlights of her live shows. “I went through a big coming-of-age process because I had to really decide how much I love this dream versus how much I love being with my family in Australia,” she explains. “How much am I prepared to sacrifice for my dream as a professional musician? And is it OK to follow that dream? And is this constant traveling the dream itself? I had some poignant questions to ask myself since the release of Paris in the Rain. And that process resulted in Secrets of My Heart.”

As the world emerged from a winter of isolation and uncertainty, bassist Gene Perla, drummer Adam Nussbaum, and pianist Jon Ballantyne entered Gene’s studio on Parker Avenue in Easton, PA in early 2021 to produce a nine-song affirmation of the creative spirit, culminating in their acclaimed self-titled recording, “The Parker Trio.” Although these three masters have worked together in various configurations in the past, The Parker Trio represents their first outing together. A gifted jazz pianist and Hammond B-3 specialist, Mike LeDonne has earned praise for his deeply swinging work with jazz greats, as well as with his own trio and Groover Quartet.

Arriving in New York in the early '80s, LeDonne distinguished himself as a regular member of the Milt Jackson Quartet, the Widespread Depression Orchestra, and as a sideman with such legends as Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, and Benny Golson. Along with sessions for Joshua Redman, Jim Snidero, and Eric Alexander, LeDonne has led his own highly regarded straight-ahead dates including 1988's Bout Time, 1993's Soulmates, and 2005's Night Song. He also leads his own funky Hammond organ group the Groover Quartet with saxophonist Alexander, guitarist Peter Bernstein, and drummer Joe Farnsworth, issuing albums like 2010's The Groover and 2016's That Feelin'.

Long known to be a soloist capable of stunning physical power and broad emotional range, it was not until the last decades that Rochester NY’s very own Joe Locke emerged as the composer, bandleader and conceptualist that he is considered today. This is in no small part due to his solo projects since the beginning of the 2000s. Four Walls of Freedom, a six-movement suite based on the writing of the monk Thomas Merton, which he composed as a vehicle for tenor saxophonist Bob Berg, garnered high praise from the critical community as a major work and won several international polls. Live in Seattle,

by The Joe Locke / Geoffrey Keezer Group, won the 2006 Ear Shot award for "Concert of the Year." This group is well loved and emulated by younger musicians looking for direction and inspiration. The overwhelming success of the quartet, Force of Four, can be attributed to the talents of his young cohorts and to the leader's musical philosophy, which is to honor tradition while keeping both feet planted in the present and future. His 2011 album, the captivating, immersive album VIA, is the result of a reunion of Storms/Nocturnes, the transatlantic trio with Geoffrey Keezer and Tim Garland.

Plays the music of PRINCE The reunion of former members of the New Power Generation (NPG) - including a number of those in the original configuration - was born out of the official Prince Tribute concert in October, 2016. The longest-running member of the NPG, keyboardist Morris Hayes, who also served as Prince's Musical Director for many years, was tapped to do the same job for the official tribute concert held in honor of the legendary artist. Hayes brought many of the original band members back together to serve as the house band (where they were joined by other NPG alumni throughout the night) for the epic musical celebration and the feedback from the fans was that the official tribute concert was both exhilarating and healing. “Exactly what we needed '' was a typical comment. Given the overwhelming response to that historic event, Morris, Sonny T, Tommy Barbarella, Tony M, Damon D, and Levi Seacer met with one of Prince's former managers to discuss an official reunion in order to bring a live celebration of Prince and his music to 'fams' throughout the world. Their intent: to honor their boss, their mentor and his music. Thus, the birth of the NPG's tour featuring the music of Prince was underway. The band has since joined forces with other Prince alumni and world class artists to perform their own tribute concerts to their legendary mentor and brother, Prince.

To start, let’s dispel a catch-all cliché. Talent and ability don’t necessarily need to be confined to a singular niche or any particular area of expertise. Skills and savvy can cross over as far as creativity is concerned. Likewise, despite the sometimes fractious relationships that exist between male siblings — witness Ray and Dave Davies of the Kinks, the Everly’s, and that turbulent twosome, Noel and Liam Gallagher of Oasis — the brotherly bond ultimately wins out. Indeed, the ability to find inspiration in a common connection never fails to reap remarkable results. Michael & Kevin Bacon — A.K.A. The Bacon Brothers — offer an ideal example of what can result when two talented individuals who share the same gene pool expand their horizons, combine their talents and create an inspired sound that stands apart and wholly on its own. With ten albums to their credit, spawned over the course of 23 years, it’s clear their band isn’t simply a sideline that supplements their day jobs. Rather, it’s an ongoing effort that’s been accompanied by commitment and creativity. Granted, Kevin’s an award-winning actor with a lengthy film, stage and television resume, and Michael is an Emmy-winning composer, who honed his craft as a songwriter in Nashville in the 70’s, but when the two pool their talents as The Bacon Brothers, the music rings with a resilience all its own.

Elling has always been a master of grooves, ranging from bebop to pure pop and progressive jazz to neo-soul, but he’s never filled an album with grooves quite like these. Ron Stackman, Jim Schwarz and Lou LaVilla began performing together in 1972. The following year they created Bahama Mama, one of the first American bands to embrace Reggae music. When the group split up in 1980, Stackman, Schwarz and Lavilla remained together and formed the Majestics. Originally a trio with Ron on Hammond B-3, clavinet and guitar, Jim on bass and Lou on drums, the Majestics steadily developed a fan base in upstate New York, eventually catching the attention of the legendary Lee "Scratch" Perry. In 1982, the group backed Perry when he opened for the Clash during their historic run at New York City's Bonds International Casino, then traveled with the music icon to Kingston, Jamaica to record his "Mystic Miracle Star" LP. The Majestics later filled out their sound, enlisting guitarist Rudy Valentino (with whom they recorded their
